My list of open source for art reference

Blender 3D - with the sketchfab addon for free 3D downloadable models. Large library, pretty much anything you need, versatile export formats. i use this the most out of all.

DAZ3D Studio for detailed figure posing/anatomy studies. free model bases included.

Internet Archive for books on various art studies such as anatomy, clothing and more, to read for free.

VUE by e-onsoftware for environmental world building. Something to fiddle around with to create some powerful, in depth background scenery. (very high CPU usage)

Style3D Atelier, a clothing simulation software with posable models to see how clothing folds form and interact with the body. Free trial exists, how much of the Programm is usable after free trial expires is still unclear to me. Will update later if it stays a viable source (for the real time cloth simulation, this requires a good CPU, too.)

MOSH (lite), for effects such as VHS filters, glitches, distortion etc. 27 effects for free. Both in static form and as .gif if i recall correctly.

Sketchuptextureclub, for seamless textures. Free to download for a limited amount each day.

hello, i don't know if i understood correctly, but i generally don't allow editing of my art. (unless its like for collages or poetry) and if that's what you meant, then yes, with credit.

thats so funny lmao, but thank you for the refollow! real talk though can't say how many times i had the same dilemma of wanting to follow someone and it showed i was in fact, already following them. thanking myself from the past for the good taste whenever it happens.

hi hi long time no see!! I'm sorry if you've been asked this before, but how in the world do you do your backgrounds? They're always so detailed and realistic, especially the cityscapes. I'm so enamored! <3

Hey there vy! Thank you very much <3 for backgrounds, ref (and brushes) are going to be your best friend. And shapes. Shapes everywhere.

I'm going to focus on the cityscape part of your ask. Especially buildings. I like drawing those more even than characters, because essentially, it's just a bunch of squares. (sorry for the terrible formatting, but this is what i mean)

Of course, you can add windows, railings, etc. But this is for the bare look. Shadows really help the way a window or balcony looks. And there are impossibly many different angles you could draw them in. If you want to paint a landscape, look at ref's. Study how the glass looks when the sun bounces off of it, for example.

If you want it to be the backdrop, always draw it first, then the characters, to make it easier to insert them. You have to determine how detailed you want it to be, depending on how far in the background it is/how much ephasis the background should have. Ultilize Pictures, Brushes (especially for the window effects) and 3D resource. I can't stress how helpful open source 3D is to get the angles right. Anyway, i hope this helped a little! please don't be afraid to seek out ref's.
