I've been re-reading Hellblazer from the very beginning and i see you're reading it too. I'm curious...how do you interpret one of the John's letters from when he's in the psych hospital (#7) in which he mentions he likes to see his sister undress and get ready to go clubing? Just a product of a writer wanting to put as many edgy things as possible on a story or maybe something with actual nuance?

That's a tough one for sure. I want to give it more grace than just being edgy for the sake of edginess given how early it is in the run, but I'm also far less inclined to give male comic writers much credit these days.

To me, at least, it's a traumatized child acting out because he's horribly traumatized. It's not uncommon for kids who experience abuse to act like this, and that's not their fault. Doing something bad and taboo because it gives him some sense of control in a life where he otherwise doesn't. Just that small letter does help paint the picture of a very troubled man with issues going way back into his childhood, which is definitely effective for setting up his history in and out of the psych ward. But how it's written is.. a little weird. This is an adult man writing about the dream he had of his sister as a teen, so I'm not entirely sure why the writers chose that and not something else. Nuanced for sure!

I'm not the best at articulating my thoughts so I hope this gets the point across, anyone can feel free to add to this if they have another perspective!
