SHOOTING WITH @zerocoolarchive 03/04/2023

Today I met with Will to shoot some snaps in Notting Hill. It was wonderful to debut against the new whitewall that is becoming the new mainstay ov Will's stark style documents.

it was a fridge-cool out and I got there about an hour early #timeblindness #overestimated. Its magical to wonder aimlessly around the place I dont think id been alone before, half-awake, feverish, weeping and not sure why im there. upon meeting we cycled thorugh several spots, firstly the white wall then three streetside locations. Entertained and ecstatically out-ov-my-comfort as Im cooed by confused 20-something bros on the street, i try to stiffen my caffiene/adrenalised muscles into each new pose. we were intermittently blessed by a beam ov sunshine amid the chilling breeze and the gaze ov passsers by.

As will be captioned, I am wearing a black NewBreedGirl baby tee with white teddybear graphic, Punk Rave poncho with long braided tassles a hood at this elegant gothic lace trim. the double-belted wrap skirt with side pocket is also from Punk rave, armwarmers-Poison industries, studded belt, sock suspenders, and shades all from ebay(as cheaply as I could find). stockings, cut up Pamella Mann tights and Doc Martin chelsea boots.

as above, some ov this shots are giving big diva energy. which i never expected to see and was the serendipitous spark ov realising an untapped aspect ov myself :3 . outside this cinema the perspective lended itself to looking out into the middle-distance, as you can see with the ended I was playing with below. The hair isnt quite styled quite how you would imagine(or that I'm used to) from this silhouette or from my references. but til now i've always had trouble retaining volume from getting ready in the morning to the moment ov the shot. it feels me with a terriying paranoia that the effort I put into styling counts for nothing against the elements and gravity and my own negligence >_< . This shoot was perhaps the first occasion where the snap surpassed my catastrophising and was gracious spare the shame ov feeling like I failed to deliver or that everything collapsed inward when it mattered ^^.

after shooting, Will was gracious enough to talk me through someone I had asked him about separately. lately id being curious as to whats required ov a creative director and where to start if I could see myself in that role. We went to the local Cafe Nero and he slid through a couple example ov projects and the trajectories they took from conception to boards, to logistics to shooting to promo. Im very glad I did that because Ive struggled with asking for help and advice but some ov this insight that I needed, people are more than willing to help where they can.

After a very enthusing and amusingly reminiscent coffee talk ov hearing anecdotes and me taking notes, we hopped back on the tube and went our separate ways. althought I didnt have plans for the rest ov the day, so just to go back home---- I would be glowing for the rest ov the day.

We met in Camden opposite the undergorund station. while I waited anxiously I was told off for trying to steal sushi from itsu. no I didnt pay, we met and left down the high street first ov all to scout the market, check out the figures and chat. Daisy is someone I think I understand Implicitly through the content she shares on instagram.

Lately I think a lot about this era ov otaku culture and my personal sentimentality with it. I explain that what I love about anime is what is has done for people and that my siblings showed a mroe material enthusiasm with it. collecting shelves upon shelves o manga volumes which remain unread but historically familiar to me. what she says to me next about being a fan echoed what I heard yesterday, almost verbatim, from a video essay about the 'decline' ov comic con. -" those interested simply werent cool to have yet", by which I supposed one doesnt feel permitted to publicise etc.

we escape the surprised sunday crowd in the food stall courtyard adjacent to camden lock and down the cobbled canal path on the right ov the bridge to the ice wharf. the third bridge down we discover a swaggy graffitied set ov stairs back up to the street from the canal, and beside it, a redbrick faux battlement. we agree - this spot'll do. after a few shots I pulled out the bowler hat for a devilish lord-ov-the-manor vibe, just holding it above my head, chin down looking up.

I was wearing an almost all black ouji-esque get-up; waistcoat and high-waisted shorts from Lolitain, a fairly plain black calvin klein shirts with the collar turned up and the collar stays removed.- over the collar I strapped a frilled beltcollar from ebay and the a frilled bowtie also from Lolitain(Lolitimes), Pamela Mann web tights, ebay sock braces, thigh-high white socks and my trust Docs.

after confirming she thinks she got the shot, we trialed all the way back downt he highstreet, past the now closed camden town station entrance, to the next station-Mornington Crescent. On the way browsing for freebies on the highstreet. I was able to confide in her my kleptomanic habits and that we were both broke and often despairing about what the economoy foretells for the businesses in front ov us.

we picked up 'free' sushi and setup camp on a bench amongst a crowd ov pigeons also having their lunch. it was delicious, as free things usually are, and headed to a wardrobe sail Daisy and some pals(namely Jess Strawberry aka @soulgemonline and her boyfriend Matt @3000monkeys) were convening at near Bethnal Green.

The sale was a delightful arrangement ov absurdly expensive brands in miniscule sizes and some slightly less expensive brands or insignifanct accessories for £5 in a suitcase beside the thoughtfully assembled set ov hangers on racks. the house was just under 10mins off Bethnal Green high street and as soon as past the notably eerie liminal 50s terraced rows to the fishmongers, kebabs and carbonara buldak noodles, it was time to part. I setup my headphones as I storm down the lane, now assuredly alone, back home.

StreetFlash x HystericSnaps Zine Launch 06.04.2023

On a cool Thursday evening in April, bestfriends and close collaborators Will Wright (ov @zerocoolarchive) and Daisy Davidson (ov @hysteric.fashion) held a joint launch event @ Hackney's Waste Store London, for their new Lifestyle Photography Zines; StreetFlash(@streetflash404) and Hysteric Snaps(@hysteric.snaps) respectively.

I arrived to find the place lit up with the buzz ov familiar faces and new acquaintences sparking. Established personalities and newblood 'on the scene' alike, almost all known to the organisers, all able to feel at home, recognising themselves in the posters adorning the slanted roof and in the zines lining the white benches inside the venue.

for many, these two zines represent a legacy ov subcultural styles reaching back decades. Odes to a kind ov love sometimes forgetten to me...until now. The nature ov this space feels very non-heirarchical due to spirit ov individual style and automony, which makes it inviting to those from the fringes ov other scenes in london which sometimes reproduce sameness and conformity to be accepted.

new styles that emerge from this spirit, i think, can be owed to spaces like this, where perhaps people might seek validation to pursue a dream for themselves. and if theres anything growing up as a nerd often teaches, its a sense ov the outside. there has to be a somewhere that, between generations, groups and levels ov assimilation, strangers, outsiders can create gateways for one another.

I cant say I know everyone here, but i dont have to. Im just Grateful to be here to observe and learn from other people on their journeys.

after sifting the limited edition hysteric.fashion waste store merch rack, greeting and smalltalking a lot ov friends and even ex-friends, my social battery starts to wither. it gets dark and Im greeted by mutuals i've not met IRL yet and chummy industry mutuals ov the zines, sipping the free beer, bubbly and more than happy to speak nonsense. with the night the even transfigures more into smaller parties diffusing past the into the street. im offered a hit ov a spliff and my brain says goodnight.

SARAH GARFIELD A/W 23 21.02.23

Sorry for such a long wait & welcome to the first official Sarah Garfield Autumn/WinterPresention from Set studio in Woolwich!!!

This February, a dear friend working as a Fashion Designer in London put on this gorgeous event to showcase a brand new film, knitwear collection, artefacts ov the film and some up-coming musical acts local to the scene.

The event spanned just two rooms and a smoking area, serving £2 hard seltzer and coke(hehe). the entrance passed a large stage space white with the slender monolithic Sarah Garfield brand now on the back panel.

Most ov the people here I'd met before because like with the Cyberus Launch, either Sarah had a stall and i met people there or the crowd from Jess' (@compulsive_leia) ALt meet come in splendid full old-school, or in this case #egl geish. Jess this time only being accompanied by Lola(@lola.true) and Bartholemew (@epi.taph_). who are also very familiar with the likes ov Jess Strawberry(@Soulgem.online), Will(@zerocoolarchive) & Daisy(@hysteric.fashion), who (jess being my age) to me still seem like elders in the Alt-Fashion subculture/Zine scene but are very wholesome and personable. I could go on about the links between everyone from my yet limited knowledge.

Going through a door at the back ov the room besidet the stage leads you to the showroom where the;clothes racks, projector, accompanying set polaroids and props were exhibited.

The Film artfully meshed some ov Sarah's origins and influences, telling a story ov two kids bound by the internet and the hunger for a niche, a place ov their own. The style was soft and otheworldly and the split screen created real-time tension between interactions. small details like band posters, accessories, and 00's fashion trends grounded us in place and made this ethereal vision ov adosclences relatable and brought into the context the emotional weight Sarah's macabre weave brought to them.

As you can see the check floor went a long way with the wide-angle shots! Sarah's niche ov twisted anemic Burton-esque victorian patterns with monochrome scemo monograms and stripes is well understood here. As Is exemplified by the comibnation ov Lola's all-black egl coord and Jess in trad scene garb.

At this event I met some ov Sarahs other friends for the first time and talked to others who I know but I dont especially hangout with.

like Ava (@wetnyuu) whos close friend ov Sarah asking me how I found a recent confusing encounter we both had with a Photographer from italy, who I thought wanted to shoot, and appears to me a lonely guy looking to connect with young creatives!? happenings!

and Soma, who I dont have a picture ov but you had asked a day or two before If I would model in their graduation show for them. they told about their concept and I was delighted. I realised later that I recognised their superb leatherwork for boots and modular gloves I'd seen in a boutique called Apocene. I was very impressed by this and its never ceases to be exciting to get unique insight into the process ov a graduation collection. Being surrounded by so much fashion again had recently had me thinking about if I stayed on that path or how I'd go about being in the industry now.

ZINE MEETING 06.03.23

Today I'm meeting someone I met back at the Cyberus Zine Launch. At the time we bonded about the absurdity ov the current moment, forgetten childhood shows, what it is to be a londoners and how we find ourself more precarious more anxious and more ustrated to express creativity than ever and than we act.

Today we convene to collaborate on something new. Something, for now, quite vague but that we are aware will test our commitment, technical knowledge and well most skills.

We've realised we have voices(aethstetic, political, spiritual, creative) and we feel motivated to work towards things others ov our generation have showed us are possible to do.
