Mam, toen ik
aan je ziekbed
jouw koude hand
in mijn warme
handen nam
werd jij het kind
en ik de vrouw
die wilde dat ze jou
kon geven datgene
wat je haar eens gaf:
leven.

Ik kan heus wel
Ik kan heus wel een maandje
zonder je. Ik ben een grote meid,
een volwassen vrouw.
Ik kan ook wel twee maanden
zonder je. Een half jaar,
een jaar misschien.
Maar dan komt er onvermijdelijk
dat moment waarop ik je
echt even moet vertellen dat
en ik weet gewoon niet
wat ik dan moet.

Timeblindness
Imagine for a moment you live in the brain of someone who cannot accurately estimate how long it’s going to take to cook, or walk the dog, or go to the gym, or read a book.
Not because they don’t care, or haven’t paid attention, not because they haven’t set themselves 7 different alarms and reminders for everything, discussed strategies at great length with friends and in therapy -
simply because it always seems to take a different amount of time to do a task than it did the last time, because their brain/focus gets sucked into small things and forgets the big picture (still cares very much about the big picture but it just kind of sneakily disappears from their conscious mind for a little), and their train of thought goes on tangents that it’s really hard to let go of ….
getting spices down from the rack to cook with suddenly turns into wiping off and reorganizing all the spices on the rack because you’ll feel so much more like an organized adult after that, but now it’s 25 minutes later and you haven’t put the chicken in the oven yet…
, or walking the dog turns into walking the dog to the store to pick up the that prescription you’ve been meaning to pick up and you might as well do it now while you’re out or you’ll just put it off longer and responsible people pick up their prescriptions.
But while you’re there you should really get toothpaste because yours is almost finished and you’re already in the store and responsible people have toothpaste in their homes, so you shouldn’t put it off, but the line is longer than you expected.
So you’ll pick up one or two other things while you wait for the line to get shorter because that seems more efficient than just waiting in the long line, and so you look up on your phone real quick if this is a good price for toothpaste and 10 minutes later you’re still standing in the aisle reading about a lawsuit against a toothbrush manufacturer from 50 years ago.
So now you can’t make it to the class you wanted to go to at the gym anymore but maybe you can still get to the gym to work out on your own if you only spend 25 minutes there -
nope, still in line, ok you can still get to the gym it’s just going to be 20 minutes there, nope the dog had to stop and poop a bunch but maybe you can still get in like 15 minutes at the gym but that’s still something right?
Maybe you just shouldn’t go to the gym today, but responsible people have good habits like going to the gym, and you ran out of time the past 2 days and it gets harder every day you don’t go, so you should go today just to stay in the habit of going, but what if it takes longer than usual to get there…
Ok trying to adjust, what if you showed up to your appointment in your gym clothes, you could make it work that way? Or if you just spent 10 minutes working out and then changed super fast while repeating a motivating mantra in your head the entire time so your brain wouldn’t wander off again, and also not getting your hair wet because you won’t have time to dry it.
You’re definitely not going to try to read a book because if it’s remotely interesting that is an open invitations n to your brain to get lost and sucked in and miss whatever you were going to do next.
Ironically you didn’t start cooking and walking the dog earlier because you were trying to plan the best most efficient way to get all these things done so you wouldn’t run out of time or be late.
You were trying really hard. You were doing all the things a responsible person is supposed to do. And you’re late. And you feel like a friggin failure. And at no point did it cross your mind “hey the person I’m meeting up with is not important and I wish to be rude to them”
It’s not a question with an easy answer. Being late can be rude and it can be difficult and it can cause problems no matter if the reason they’re late is understandable or not. I’m not saying “let me off the hook because my brain is weird”, or “I should be allowed to be late to work”, just that there are layers to the situation you may be missing.
- Enilorac, Reddit
TL;DR - enilorac is describing "Time Blindness". We don't understand how long things take. My boyfriend has to tell me all the time "if you want to do X and Y, we won't be on time to Z". In my brain, we could totally do them all, but in reality, I'd have done XY and then shown up VERY late for Z.
What reframed my mind for me was chronically late people aren’t inconsiderate necessarily.. they’re chronically optimistic! I always think about the optimal time things should take me and don’t account for anything small that often cause delays. I would blame being late to loads of predictably unpredictable things like “I hit all the red lights, and then got stuck behind a grandma driving in the parking lot, and I was out of gas!” Who could have possibly known? If it was just one of those things I would have been fine!
So now I practice being less optimistic about timelines 😆 In a healthy way. I think about how long things might take me and add them all up. It often surprises me but when I do act on that timeline I’m often way more relaxed and ahead of schedule

‘’And, finally, this is what I need to say to you.
There are things in your life that only you will see,
stories that only you will hear.
If you don’t tell them or write them down,
if you don’t make the picture,
these things will not be seen,
these things will not be heard.’’

Hopen is voorspellen noch voorzien

Run your dishwasher twice
By Kate Scott, 2020: Quora
When I was at one of my lowest (mental) points in life, I couldn’t get out of bed some days. I had no energy or motivation and was barely getting by.
I had therapy once per week, and on this particular week I didn’t have much to ‘bring’ to the session. He asked how my week was and I really had nothing to say.
“What are you struggling with?” he asked.
I gestured around me and said “I dunno man. Life.”
Not satisfied with my answer, he said “No, what exactly are you worried about right now? What feels overwhelming? When you go home after this session, what issue will be staring at you?”
I knew the answer, but it was so ridiculous that I didn’t want to say it.
I wanted to have something more substantial.
Something more profound.
But I didn’t.
So I told him, “Honestly? The dishes. It’s stupid, I know, but the more I look at them the more I CAN’T do them because I’ll have to scrub them before I put them in the dishwasher, because the dishwasher sucks, and I just can’t stand and scrub the dishes.”
I felt like an idiot even saying it.
What kind of grown ass woman is undone by a stack of dishes? There are people out there with *actual* problems, and I’m whining to my therapist about dishes?
But he nodded in understanding and then said:
“Run the dishwasher twice.”
I began to tell him that you’re not supposed to, but he stopped me.
“Why the hell aren’t you supposed to? If you don’t want to scrub the dishes and your dishwasher sucks, run it twice. Run it three times, who cares?! Rules do not exist.”
It blew my mind in a way that I don’t think I can properly express.
That day, I went home and tossed my smelly dishes haphazardly into the dishwasher and ran it three times.
I felt like I had conquered a dragon.
The next day, I took a shower lying down.
A few days later. I folded my laundry and put them wherever the fuck they fit.
There were no longer arbitrary rules I had to follow, and it gave me the freedom to make accomplishments again.
Now that I’m in a healthier place, I rinse off my dishes and put them in the dishwasher properly. I shower standing up. I sort my laundry.
But at a time when living was a struggle instead of a blessing, I learned an incredibly important lesson:
There are no rules.
Run the dishwasher twice.

Pad
neem de bocht
en als je wilt
vlieg je er zingend uit
klim de berg
en als je mag
stop je vlak voor de top
volg de lijn
als het je past
blijf je steeds er binnen
dwaal doodlopend
als je botst
verleg en laag je lat
maar blijf
in godsnaam

Zwangerschap
De generaties voor me,
die waren toch niet meer dan grondstof?
Die mengden zich toch met één doel,
om mij, de jongste god?
En ik zou toch een steen zijn,
een vorm en de reden in één?
Gewoon, ík, slotakkoord van de tijd?
Maar plotseling ben ik zo groot.
Het rammelt in mij en het groeit.
Er komen nieuwe ruimten bij.
Soms ben ik bang. Ik begrijp het
niet goed. Hoe volmaakt is een god
die veranderen moet?

My dear,
In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love.
In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile.
In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm.
I realized, through it all, that…
In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.
And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.
Falsely yours,

kleden in mijn hoofd. De dokter zegt dat ik het kleed
expres scheef moet leggen.

EXPEDITIE
zal onze sentimenten aanwakkeren

Ons
mag niet kapot.
