From Brownsville to âSXSWâ Texas

Brownsvilleâs very own, I.O.D., known for his latest EP âTheTheThe Brownsvillianâ secured two official shows at South by Southwest (SXSW) 2017 in Austin, Texas. For those who do not know the big deal of this festival, hereâs a little summary of what the festival is about and how important it is to the Indie community. SXSW is an annual mixture of conferences and festivals from the film, interactive media and music industries that takes place in Austin, Texas giving creatives the space to be âdiscoveredâ and to achieve their goals of networking and interacting with professionals, and other creatives, in different artistic industries from all over the world. Basically, SXSW is a big deal for artists in the independent scene.

I had the opportunity to speak with I.O.D to talk about his journey to get to SXSW to put on for Brooklyn, NY.Â

Can you break down what you did to get there?
I was offered two shows at the festival, and my bros were already planning to drive down to Austin. I needed to make some money for myself in a weekâs time to tag along, so I started a GoFundMe and raised $300 in a week.
Dope. They were official shows?
Yea, they were official shows.
Can you talk more about your experience from the ride to performing on those stages?
The experience is hard to describe in its entirety if you werenât there. We drove 30 hours, knocked out our shows, went to some panels and meetups, drank, smoked, had fun doing it, and drove 30 hours back. Oh, and I worked on a bit of music while I was out there.
Nice, thatâs dedication right there. Who are your bros that you drove down with?
TazeGrip, LaFrance and The Wrong Islanders.
Okay, so what advice would you give to other artists that want to be at SXSW 2018?
My advice is to have a clear pln of what you want to do, but donât take it too seriously. Keep your energy in an open, but informed and aware, space. And have fun. Thatâs key. If youâre not having fun then find some fun.
Why the emphasis on fun?
Because fund is the only goal I feel worth fighting for. Fun is a cause for innovation, and the counterbalance to the evil money brings. Money ainât worth having if you canât translate it into fun.
Mmmmmmm, dope. Dope! Is there anything you would change about the whole experience, or you felt it was perfect?
Wish I had a driverâs license while I was out there.
Hard to maneuver?
Na, not really, just couldnât do shit on my own.
Makes sense. Whatâs upcoming for you?
New Music, New Merch, New Events. Iâm shooting videos for On E and Soot. I have record releasing with Kibir La Amlak through Dojo Records and Massada Rock.
Dope! Well, keep me posted, and thank you for this. Itâs inspirational.

GIVE THE KIDS A CHANCE!
Grammy Award winner and Chicago Native Chance The Rapper Donates $1,000,000 to the Chicago Public Schools Foundation "for arts and enrichment programming."Â

According to rolling stones magazine, Chance said his $1 million donation was made possible through ticket sales for his upcoming spring tour and a joint effort between concert promoters (including Live Nation, AEG and Ticketmaster) and local venues and promoters across the country. The rapper did not give specifics on how the money would be raised, but noted that the aforementioned companies "were able to band together to use funds from ticket sales to donate to CPS."

Chance the rapper sat down with the governor of Chicago, Bruce Rauner, to discuss ways to improve the cityâs public school system. The 23 year old 3 time Grammy award winning artist had this to say at a press conference held at Westcott Elementary School in Chicago's West Chatham neighborhood, â...Our talks were unsuccessful... Gov. Rauner still won't commit to give Chicago's kids a chance without caveats or ultimatums. While Iâm frustrated and dissapointed at the governors inaction, that will not stop me from doing all that I can to support Chicagos most valuable resources... its children.â Â

We applaude Chance The Rappers efforts to make a difference in his community and encourage other upcoming artists to follow his lead and add purpose to their passion.Â
