First fully analog painting I've done in...15? 20? years? Trying to spend more time away from the Bad Screen™, (re)learning some tricks.

Gouache, uni pin liner, Prismacolor pencil, little bit of Posca white, and a lot of second-guessing.

OP here! *folds hands in mock solemnity* It is with much regret that I must face the Lefty situation.

Which is to say...I did not forget about him!

If you look at D's hands (and props to @somajean for helping me realize I had slightly colored the flats wrong and fixing it quick), you'll see I designed his gloves to be open-palmed. Implied Left Hand! Not every VHD piece can accommodate Lefty, compositionally or conceptually. This is perhaps for the best.

(If it pleases the viewer, you can imagine D just wanted him to shut up with his commentary about the groping Carmilla ghost hands.)

In the Realm of the Damned (Vampire Hunter D)| 2024 | Traditional inks/CSP When in doubt, drown your sorrows in elaborate fanart! More of my favorite anime dhampir in his big stupid hat (affectionate). Inked on paper. Corrections, color, and retro, folded-poster-that-came-with-your-DVD overlays done in CSP. It had been a long time since I inked a full piece by hand, with washes and everything, and I had to re-learn a lot of forgotten tricks. But ! I've loved returning to physical media, even with the challenges it presented, and want to do more steps away from the computer over time.

Is it convenient? No! Is it good for me? Yes!

Anything for anime men.

I don't think I've ever 'painted' metal before, so this was a fun thing to explore. Now I just want to draw armor all the time...

Proof that polls are but a suggestion, and the rest is at the whim of the artist!

I had intended to finish this before the end of the calendar year, but – typical of 2023 – it was not to be. As crazy as this one drove me, I figured out so many things while doing it. Like metallic reflections, style synchronicity (between my tendency to overwork in painting and my desire to cel shade everything for brevity), and what I want my work to feel like.

Here's to finishing far more pieces this year, and making even more strange, sensual, and very, very trans artwork.

Detail post separately. For now, a celebratory cocktail viewing of Godzilla Minus One.

Undergrowth | 2023 | CSP Happy (late) Midsummer Solstice/Pride! ... I flatted this one way back at the start of the year, got intimidated by it, and stepped away. Then life got in the way. In the wake of successive professional and personal disappointments, I guess I felt like I had something to prove. I never trained as a painter. My work has started to take that direction, and I'm happy to chase it, even if it feels like I'm working at the edge of my ability the whole time. I advise students to love that feeling, and seek it out, but it's no less scary for having more experience ;) ... Here's to all you bottom growth kings (iykyk), and anyone else feeling like a long-cultivated garden project of ecstasy in these humid summer days.

Magic Trick | 2023 | CSP

Thank the gods we're all coming back to Tumblr, the only app that lets cinemascope pervs like me indulge our lust for widescreen formats.

This painting feels like a big leap towards the kind of work I want to be making. I have no idea what to tag it! (is it NSFW?? Hard to say.) But I hope you enjoy. Or don't enjoy! Or ride the line between appeal and discomfort, as intended!

Any of the ways, I'm off to drink something besides coffee.

Walk cycles/style tests for my pandemic-delayed next animated short project, The Death of Me. This is our protagonist, Kazuo, who is – as protagonists tend to be – going through it.

I did these once character sheets were done to get myself familiar with drawing him in motion, and to test some style and pipeline stuff. He came out a little stiff in movement for my tastes, but it's fine since this was mostly a design sample. Plus...he's a little stiff! He's a serious lad with places to be! He's fed up!

King of Hell | 2022 | CSP

Original character from the story I’ve been writing on and off this year, which has escaped its short form confines and turned into the skeleton of a novel. So it goes.

Despite my avowed love of lurid colors, this one belongs in black & white.

It’s him! D! My favorite far-future fanged man with a stupid hat, and arguably the worst-placed sidekick in all of media!

This is a re-work of a painting I did last year, that I was never fully happy with. I finally gathered the strength to re-open that file (a daunting task for any digital illustrator), assessed the crimes I had committed, and rebuilt him, since I have the technology.

Had a ton of fun aping that Madhouse 00s black-cel-shade style (see also: The Animatrix), and redesigning his jewelry and pauldrons to have more of that Amano flavor. Got lost in the hair for a minute, but who hasn’t.

Close-ups are so you can see how out of my mind I am.
