people love animals up until you suggest they should stop eating them and suddenly nobody cares lmao
#coworker talked for 10 whole minutes of how much she loves animals and would do anything for them#I casually asked if she's vegetarian#suddenly she was all like oh no I could never#'love chicken curry too much haha'#and I could see how she struggled to still convince me she loves animals despite that#it's kind of funny and also extremely sad#veg 🌱

You're not allowed to get angry. But they are.
You don't even have to mention veganism. Sometimes you're just talking about the environmental cost of the animal industry. Or you're just sharing your experience of quitting cheese. How you stop missing it after a while. You really do.
You can see it in their faces. There is a wall. A complete block. Nothing will get in. Anything you say gets sidetracked and ignored. Filed away as irrelevant.
The truth is that it's too relevant. Mustn't be confronted. But they won't admit that. They'll just laugh at you at the mention of it.
It's hardest with the people you love. You know them to be kind. Thoughtful. Intelligent. Empathetic. Yet every day they choose to partake in an industry that is responsible for the unnecessary suffering of billions of others. It's incredibly painful to realise. To know. It breaks your heart ten thousand different ways. The reality of it will make your blood boil.
But you cannot get angry. Only they can. Because you told them they are Bad.

As a vegan I am automatically also a mage. I summon nutritionists, doctors, philosophers and historians. They appear as soon as I mention I am vegan at any dining table. Wow such magic.

listen. aging into your thirties rocks. yes your joints get a little creaky. yes you can’t sleep in a pretzel on the floor anymore after a concert or a convention. and you lose some friends. but the thing is that you sort out who your real friends are and you sort out who you really are. and you get to see your friends settling into careers they like, and adopt new dogs and cats, and you find a job you can stand, and get really good at arts and crafts, and maybe that book you loved as a kid gets a movie deal and it doesn’t suck, and you learn to like new food and bake your own bread, and you realize that the great portfolio of self harm scars you all used to curate are going white with age and not updated, and half your friends are a different gender now and so much happier and maybe you are too, and you know who you are, and that it’s a journey and not a revelation. it’s a direction you’re headed, and you’re enjoying the trip.
reaching your 30′s rocks. and i’m hearing good things about what comes next, too.

A friendly reminder that someone who is (in good faith of course) challenging your opinions, asking you to think about something, asking you to apply whatever logic you brought up to the situation being discussed at hand, is NOT personally insulting you.
#god I mentioned something to my sister about veganism once#literally just once in over a year#and she immediately went on a rant about how vegans are annoying and preaching#told me I don't have any sources and didn't let me speak and called me 'too deep'#then shut down the conversation without giving me any chance to give said sources#finally insulted me by calling me contentious and physically walked away#I was left baffled#I could NOT say a word - she just literally talked over me the whole time#and yet what sparked this absurd reaction was me saying we have a choice in what we eat but the animals don't#that's all I said! I would've loved for somebody to tell me that when I was eating meat#it's simply something to think about#besides#I said it only in response to a comment SHE made#guess I struck a nerve idk#to me that was nothing but a normal reply in a conversation#existing as a vegan is insulting to some people lol#it really hurts when such people are your close family though#oh well#veg 🌱

Do I have to be an activist to be a good vegan?
A good vegan is just someone who is avoiding animal exploitation as far as is possible and practicable. Keep in mind that veganism is a moral imperative; it’s the bare minimum we can do for animals. To avoid actively contributing and funding their exploitation and mass slaughter is the absolute least we can do.
As with any systematic exploitation and destruction of any group, just not taking part in it is not enough. When someone opposes a system or a regime we usually expect more from them than just not directly supporting that system, we expect them to firstly oppose it in word and in deed. There is nothing unique about animal exploitation in that respect.
The way in which animals are unique as victims of oppression though, is the fact that they can’t give us their testimonies, can’t speak out in defence of their own rights. So if animals to are to be liberated they need us to be their advocates. We cannot just uplift their voices, we have to lift up our own. Animals rely on us as vegans to speak out in their defence.
All that said, you can only do what you’re able to. I’m not expecting everyone to be running blogs, writing books, be out on the street or engaged in direct liberation. What I think is more than reasonable to expect though, is for people to be advocates for animals in their own little spheres. That means opposing animal exploitation as it crosses your path, it means advocating veganism, sharing resources, spreading awareness, being a positive role model.
More fundamentally, it means offering up what is quite possibly the only anti-speciesist perspective that many of your friends and family will have ever heard. In many instances, you will be the only person who is in a position to actually challenge the speciesism of the communities you part of, whether that is at work, school or home. This doesn’t mean calling people out every time they buy a burger, that isn’t usually constructive, but you should be willing to speak up and challenge prejudice where you feel you doing so may be effective.
Not everyone can be an animal rights activist, but we can all engage in advocacy in our daily lives, however we are best placed to do that. I know it’s an awkward thing and I know it’s anxiety inducing, but the stakes are far too high, and there are for too few of us for any of us to remain silent. If we don’t speak out for animals, who will?
