"i suck at summaries": a dubiously helpful list of tips for how to do a summaries

by no means am i an expert. but in the hopes that this is helpful.

fic summaries have two main purposes:

tell a reader what the premise of your fic is in one glance, and

provide a 'hook' that convinces them to click on it.

based on those two purposes, here's what you should aim to do:

pack the key information into something that can be read while scrolling, and

make your fic stand out.

how do you do that. there are many different ways. ymmv. here are some starting points which may help if you are really, truly stuck.

details under the cut. in summary:

know your premise

keep it short and sharp

demonstrate your style

1: can you describe your premise in maximum three lines?

fewer is better. im not saying your summary has to BE fewer than three lines, you just need to be able to describe the premise as concisely as possible. not the whole fic. not everything that happens. just your premise.

being able to condense your ideas this way will improve your understanding of the work and make it easier to summarise.

sometimes it's a bit hard to isolate what exactly your premise is, especially if you were just writing into the void. so here are some questions you can ask yourself to figure it out:

what was the idea that spurred you to write the fic?

what is the climactic action in the fic?

if the fic is an au, canon divergence, what if, etc - what is the point of difference between this and canon?

if the fic is based around a trope, a genre, a particular device - how did you apply it, what makes the work familiar, and what makes it different?

this is important, because:

2: brevity is the soul of wit

now that you know your premise, it's time to jazz it up. turn it into a one-liner or similarly catchy pitch. give it a makeover.

it doesn't have to be literally one line. however, do not make your summary super long. do not make either your summary or your tags a massive block of text. the reader is scrolling. they have not yet decided to invest time in your fic.

the ideal summary is stylish and concise. your reader should be able to take it in without pausing for too long. it gives them a good impression of you: you know how to be economical with your sentences, which means your writing is probably easy and enjoyable to read.

and on that note:

3: including an excerpt is always an option

an optional option. but if you're stuck, it's a free card to play.

readers want to know that your writing style matches what they like to read. showing off your style can help you stand out to an interested reader.

try and find a few lines which are representative of the premise, representative of your style, and sufficiently intriguing. an excerpt is a try before you buy. you just wrote a whole fic. you want people to read the whole fic and enjoy your work. so show them what you have to offer.

what is an example, postmaker

look im not more qualified to give this advice than anyone else, but here's what i do if it helps. i typically pick out a short excerpt and include a short pitch underneath it. that way the reader knows what i sound like and what the fic is about.

here is a baldur's gate 3 fic summary

shadowheart says, “kill l–” “not lae’zel, darling, it’s too obvious. in fact, both of you are banned from killing each other.” astarion thinks for a moment. “in the game, at least.” -- the gang plays fuck, marry, kill.

this fic has a basic premise and hinges on dialogue, so i picked some sample dialogue to demonstrate what my grasp on the character dynamics looks like and then added one line to explain what the fic is about.

here is a death note fic summary (death note spoilers) (i guess)

The night Ryuzaki dies, L appears in Light's bed. -- (every night when light goes to sleep, his dreams place him in a romantic relationship with his newly-dead rival. it makes him sick.)

this fic has a more abstract premise, so i picked a short excerpt to demonstrate what the tone of the fic is (a bit mysterious). then i added two lines: just enough information to explain what the catalyst of the fic is, but no more than that, so that the reader will be intrigued.

here is a persona 5 fic summary

Ren grins. “You want me to date Goro?” “Pretend-date Goro,” Ann corrects. “And make his crush jealous.” “This is not going to work,” Goro says. “Sure, I’ll do it,” says Ren, still grinning. He does his own rendition of Ann’s eyelash bat. “Go out with me, Goro-kun?” “I’m older than you, so show me a little respect,” Goro says crossly. “Our relationship is off to a bad start, Ren-kun.” -- (or: what not to do when you're fake-dating your real crush.)

this fic is based on a premise everyone knows well (fake-dating trope), so i picked dialogue that samples the tone of the fic and of the key relationship so that readers can decide if i write the dynamic in a way they personally vibe with. then i added a line to tell them what the trope is, so that fake-dating trope enjoyers know that's what it is.

What is the bucktommy hiatus event?

The bucktommy hiatus event is an event hosted by bucktommysource that begins on June 1st and runs for 8 weeks to inspire fans of this ship to create new fanworks during the hiatus! We're running two sets of prompts - one more specific, and one more vague - but a prompt can be picked from either list for any type of fanwork. You can pick strictly from one prompt list for the 8 weeks, mix and match across them, combine prompts from both lists (e.g. combining the week 2 prompts of 'quote(s)' and 'baking' to form a fanwork) - anything you can think of! Participation isn't strict; if you're only inspired by 1 or 2 of the weeks, feel free to just make content for those weeks. The main purpose of the event is to have fun - it shouldn't be stressful or taxing. And just because these prompts run across two months doesn't mean you can't make content after that! If you see this in August, September, October - hell, any time! - feel free to use the prompts as inspiration. The full list of prompts can be found in our introductary post here!

What can I make for this event?

You can make anything your heart desires! Fanart, fanfiction, gifsets, graphics, edits, fanvideos, icons, headers, memes, meta - to name but a few!

Can you be more specific in what you mean by a prompt?

The prompts in this event are intentionally vague (especially in the second list!) and there's no right or wrong way to interpret them. We encourage people to be creative with the way they interpret them!

I missed the beginning of the event/I joined late/ I missed a few weeks - can I still join?

Yes! You can participate in as many, or as few, prompts as you like.

I missed a week, can I still do the prompt?

Of course! If you stumbled on this event late, or, for example, missed week 1 and we're not on week 4, you can still create content for any of the prompts you've missed! The only thing we ask is that you don't skip ahead and do future weeks early!

Can I make multiple things per prompt?

Absolutely!

Can I combine prompts? For example, can I combine week the 1 'home' prompt with the week 6 'firsts' prompt?

You can! All we ask is that, if this is something you want to do, you hold off on posting it until the later week - so, in the above example, you hold off on posting it until week 6. We don't want people to skip ahead on weeks that haven't arrived yet!

I want to create something in multiple parts (eg. multi-chapter fic, series of gifsets) for one of the prompts - do all parts need to be completed and posted during the relevant week?

No - it's 100% fine to just post the first of a fic or gifset during the relevant week!

Can I create content that is mature or NSFW for the event?

Yes - just make sure you tag everything properly both on tumblr and external sites (like AO3), especially if the subject matter could potentially be upsetting or triggering!

How do I add my fic to the AO3 collection?

1. From your fic, click ‘edit’, and scroll down to the ‘associations’ section. 2. In the 'Post to Collections / Challenges’ field, enter 'bucktommy hiatus event' and you should see the bucktommy hiatus event (bucktommyhiatus) appear in the autocomplete list. 3. Do I have to mention the event/prompt when I post my creation? Like in the caption of a gifset or the notes of a fic?

Not if you don't want to! Mentioning the event is a nice way to spread awareness of it so other people who might not know about it can see it, but it's not mandatory. Just make sure you use our tags if you want us to see it/know that it's content for this event!

Is this event being hosted anywhere else?

No, not by us - we're only on Tumblr and AO3. However if you want to post your content to other sites (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Bluesky), feel free!

Can I join in a language other than English?

Absolutely! As mods, we may only speak one or two languages between us, but we encourage creations made in any language! Please just ensure that they're tagged correctly, though!

Kinda related to your last post but if someone wanted to know the most they possibly could about Mel, which media should they be looking into? Obviously the two seasons of Arcane give us the most in-depth canon knowledge about her character, but there's also a bunch of supplemental stuff coming out recently and I'm having a hard time keeping up. Is it an Ambessa book and two or three short videos as well? I'm also seeing there's a comic maybe? I don't play League which probably contributes a lot to my confusion. Are there some interviews with the cast/creators that you think help lend insight to her character as well?

Of course! Within the Mel Medarda expanded universe, we so far have:

the book Ambessa: Chosen of the Wolf by C.L. Clark, which details the time between Mel's failure and her exile to Piltover, and while Ambessa is technically the main character, we get a lot of insight about the brutality Mel was trying to avoid having happen in Piltover as well as how she got her first tattoos

the Arcane Artbook has some early concept art and creator's thoughts on Mel, I have a copy so I might post all relevant pages to this blog for archiving purposes, and then the account @art-of-arcane sometimes posts additional concept art and the 3d modeling

the music video Blood Sweat & Tears, which recounts a vision Ambessa received while pregnant with Mel, it's also recounted in the Ambessa novel but I would still watch the original for the full experience

the LoL Season trailer Welcome to Noxus - Bite Marks, which isn't Mel focused and is, from what I can tell, to promote in-game events and isn't a show, but it does show Mel's immediate arrival in Noxus

the Mel Motion Comic | The Fourth Principle video, which is more of a character study regarding her thoughts about mercy, but does introduce us to a cousin of hers that has similar sigils

the LoL video The Roots of Empire | Origins of Noxus, a short piece (but gorgeously animated) that focuses mostly on Leblanc being ominous, but again reinforces Mel's importance in the world of Noxus (and possibly that the Black Rose will want to keep destabilizing Clan Medarda)

for the game itself, there's the Mel Voice - Special Interactions video that has short dialogue with other significant characters, due to the fact that LoL is basically a PvP game this does mean that the characterization is a bit odd and contradictory at times but it has its moments

she also has a very lovely champion theme The Soul's Reflection

more speculatively, there's the Iron & Chains show, which so far we only have leaks of, but it appears that Mel will be a main character with Swain as her mentor (and LoL is also heavily advertising with Mel at this moment, so I doubt she'll be missing from future projects)

unfortunately I don't really keep track of interviews, that's my weakest link in regards to material, but I know there's one hour-long interview with Toks Olagundoye here

ok yeah lots of memes about how the shitty new UI is literally a direct carbon copy of twitter and we hate it because of that, yea yea

here’s some actual/extra reasons why the UI itself is shitty beyond the fact that it’s stolen from twitter (in just my personal opinion)

it’s claustrophobic as hell. the old UI felt breathable, felt like you could scroll and actually look at your posts, and now there’s enough shit going on on one page that it actually gives me a headache. (i’ve heard other people say this as well, so maybe it’s not just me that’s overstimulated by all the fucking noise on the dash?)

the ‘dash sorting’ (for you / your tags / what you missed) is way too high up the page now and appears crowded against the top where things like the bookmarks bar are on most browsers. not that anything in this new UI isn’t crowded.

i’ve seen it mentioned plenty already, but there’s quite a lot of unnecessary duplication-- as in, the same buttons that exist in the new left navigation panel show up on the right in blog view, which is just completely annoying and unneeded clutter.

the fact that post interaction options are all on the right side of the posts, but dashboard navigation is now all pushed to the far left of display, is extremely annoying. i’m right-handed, so it’s extra annoying for me to have to constantly go all the way over there. maybe that’s easier for left-handed people, but if the case was supporting diversity, why not just put an option in dashboard preferences to switch the side of ALL the controls? because the post interactions are still on the right.

while we’re on the subject-- tumblr’s original design was actually MUCH more intuitive and easy to navigate. the reason for this is that everything you needed to click was in one small area. you scroll up and down the dash, move slightly up to navigate (home/asks/notifications) and slightly down to the side to interact with a post (reblog/reply). extremely simple, easy to use, even ‘lazy + addicting’, which is what all social media studio exes are supposed to want right now. changing the ui to actually be more work and more frustrating to navigate seems completely opposed to what their obvious business strategy should be.

tumblr’s original design was also much more breathable, with the small icons in the corner looking organized and not taking up much space, and lots of room for the posts themselves to be the main attraction.

there’s the fact that copying someone else’s brand entirely actually just puts you in a bigger, wider pool with much more competition, and makes you much more likely to immediately fall short of that and go bankrupt.

tumblr's original purpose was to be geared toward blogs, and these updates, along with the writing on the wall about blog themes being completely phased out soon, is completely against the original purpose. although sometimes website purposes change for the better, so take that as you will.

and finally the obvious point that you can tell from all the memes: this change is almost universally hated by the core tumblr userbase-- aka the site’s loyal consumers for years and years. driving out their main demographic seems like a very obvious, very quick way to lose a lot of fucking money. they also did this “carbon copy of twitter” update literally just a week after sitewide protest about the idea of this site being anything like twitter, so it feels like a massive Fuck You to literally all of the users. tumblr is rapidly approaching their trust thermocline, and show no sign of slowing down.

these are just my opinions about the ui, and i’m only one person. so feel free to add on other design flaws you think people should be aware of or able to mention! i will probably also be submitting this post as feedback to staff, and will be taking their surveys when i can as well.

How will this work?

For the entire month of March I will be accepting Nominees for every category via asks, on April 1st I will release the comprehensive list of every Nominee. The first week of April will be reserved for Nominees to run their campaign(please tag it as #mutuals awards propaganda so I can find it!). April 8th to 30th will be for voting, each poll will last for 7 days. If the number of nominations exceeds the poll limit the bracket will be split up and the winners will be pit against each other for the ultimate winner. May 1st I will make a post announcing the winners for each category.

Who can participate?

Any of my mutuals, or mutuals in law! (aka, we are both mutuals with the same person, but we aren't mutuals with each other)

Who can I nominate?

You can nominate any of your mutuals to any category via ask. You can also nominate yourself to any category. I(the host) can be nominated as well. When you do, drop a few reasons for the nomination too. Some categories will be 18+, so make sure those you are nominating are 18 or older please! If you are nominated and wish to nor participate, dm me to get removed from the bracket.

Can I nominate more than one person?

Yep! You have an unlimited number of nominations, and the same person can be nominated for multiple categories. However, if you are going to nominate the same person for different categories, do so in separate asks please! I’d be happy to share some lower poly cc sources with you.

Below is a list of some of my main sources for gameplay friendly hair, plus notes for finding other stuff (clothing, build/buy).

For the purposes of this list, I’m defining “gameplay friendly hair” as hair that is 15k or under—this is my personal preference, and it’s totally cool if others’ definitions are different from mine. I really hope no one takes offence. There’s a lot of absolutely stunning stuff out there, and everyone has different preferences, computer specs, etc. :)

Here are some ideas to start with (this list isn’t comprehensive; I've cherrypicked hair from alllll over the place):

Hair:

Ageiha (Livejournal blog)

Ade-Darma at TSR. You’ll want to check the “Notes” tab, then check what’s listed for the highest polycount—you can do this with other creators on TSR too, I just happen to have quite a few Ade-Darma hairs.

Agnelid has a tag dedicated to hair with reduced polycounts

Bellakenobi has a lot of gameplay friendly hair (and clothes!)

Buckley has a bunch of retextured and fixed up EA hairs over at MTS, as well other gameplay-friendly hairs and clothing under their downloads tag

Carversims has a low polycount tag for hairs that are 15k or less.

Elitisims has some great options (just check the polycounts for each download).

Lalasimmer has some fantastic hairs, including a few lower poly options to check out (and personally for gameplay, I am willing to go a little higher—like 17-18k poly—for good Black/POC hair).

Melsts3cc has a bunch of hair retextures and conversions, you can just scroll and find the lower poly ones.

Nectar-cellar is one of my favorite sources for gameplay friendly hair and clothing.

Nemiga-sims-archive Some of my favorite hairs are from here, you’ll just have to scroll and check the polycount on each post.

Poisonfireleafs has a lot of good options, again just scroll and check polycounts in the posts.

Recently I’ve been really enjoying the 4t3 clay hair conversions  from ts3-rauh and lwillowlthewicked, which are low poly.

Clothing

There are too many fantastic options to list them all here, but a few sources off the top of my head to check out that have a lot of lower poly stuff include meochicc, simtanico, sweetdevil-sims, Bill Sims, elvgreen, suteflower, Rstarsims3, kotajose, and sim-songs. A good practice is to just make sure you’re checking the polycounts listed in the download posts since sometimes there are some higher ones (most creators/converters are really good about listing polycounts!)

Notes/Other

You can pretty much always assume that EA mesh edits/mashups are fine in terms of polycount, and Maxis match cc is usually low poly as well (so, I’d recommend browsing a Maxis match cc finds blog, such as Matchsim. That’s a great way to find more creators/converters who have gameplay friendly cc up for download).

Oh, and 4t3 EA conversions are usually low poly too, so another good option is to head over to xt3conversionfinds and browse by EP/SP.

For stuff from older creators, I highly recommend darkccfinds. You might have to personally check some of the polycounts yourself, but it’s a great resource if you’re looking for resurrected older cc that is otherwise lost/missing/has broken links, etc.

Simblr.cc's Dead-Site Repository is a good option as well in terms of finding older/missing stuff.

You’ve noticed the weird mood the moment your boyfriends returned from their dance practice. Chan seemed pissed, Minho seemed agitated, and they haven’t spoken a word since they got here. You’ve finished dinner, deciding to give them time to work it out on themselves. When nothing happens, you finally speak up. “So…what happened at dance practice?” Minho keeps staring at his phone but stops scrolling as if he’s waiting for Chan to start. Chan looks at you from his place at the kitchen island and huffs softly. “Hello?” you ask, starting to get irritated. 

“Chan messed up some steps and got pissed that I told him in front of everyone else,” Minho speaks up, not looking into Chan’s direction on purpose. 

“Wow, thanks,” Chan comments darkly. 

“I thought you do that with everyone, being the main dancer and all?” you ask gently, trying to get to the bottom of this.

“Mhm, I thought so too,” Minho tells you, getting up as he notices you starting to set the table. He takes the plates from your hands and shakes his head at you. “Let me do that.”

“Alright, darling,” you nod, flashing him a soft smile. “And that pissed you off?” you ask Chan who watches the two of you.

“Apparently,” Minho nods.

“She didn’t ask you, Min,” Chan tells him.

“You didn’t seem so keen on answering just seconds ago, Chan,” he rolls his eyes.

Chan turns in his chair to face him and shoots him a glare. “Listen up, I have no issue with you telling me I mess stuff up, but you don’t have to point out the same mistake five times.”

“Well, then, don’t make it five times,” he mutters, but Chan hears it.

You sigh softly and sit down at the table with Minho, filling their plates. Now, they were starting to be ridiculous. Chan laughs weakly and rolls his eyes playfully. "You know, sometimes I'm really not surprised people out there think you're a sassy ass,"

Minho laughs it off, but you see the confusion and anxiety clouding his soft brown eyes. "Chan, stop sulking now, that’s ridiculous," you tell him, patting the chair next to you. Your boyfriend rolls his eyes again and sits down next to you, finally starting to eat. You watch Minho observantly, stubbornly keeping his eyes down on his food. "So, how was your day besides that practice?" you ask hesitantly. You can tell Minho didn’t take that last comment well and wonder what’s going on in his head now.

"As long as Min didn't act like he knows everything, it was fine," Chan says, clearly joking now, but there's no reaction from your shared boyfriend. 

"And for you, Min?" you ask gently. 

Minho clears his throat and nods. "It was alright," he simply says. 

"Are you?" you ask and gently nudge his leg with your foot beneath the table. 

Minho looks up and smiles bravely. "Sure, I'm home. Why wouldn't I be?" he asks, but you can tell how insecure he currently is. 

Chan looks up and frowns softly. "What's wrong?" he asks confused. “You’re mad now?” 

"Nothing, of course, I’m not," Minho says before swallowing hard and looking back down at his food. He blinks a few times as if he was fighting back tears. 

You nudge Chan gently, who's already putting down his spoon. Chan reaches out for him over the table, gently taking his hand. "Min, baby," he says softly. 

Minho lets him and very hesitantly intertwines their fingers. "Am I?" he asks timidly. 

"What?" Chan asks, confused. 

"I'm sorry if I was an ass today, Channie, I didn't mean to," he says and finally looks up. The desperation in his eyes to hear he wasn't was undeniable and hurt you. 

Chan shakes his head and lets go of his hand. Minho's face falls at the loss of physical contact, and he watches him timidly as Chan gets up. Chan walks around the table, steps behind him, and wraps him into a strong hug. "The only ass here is me. I wasn't thinking. I should've known that joke would hurt you," he says, and Minho leans back into him, resting his hands on Chan's arms. 

"I was only joking too, you know," he says gently. 

"I know you were," Chan nods and plants a kiss on his cheek. "I'm tired, that's all." 

"Okay," Minho nods and gently squeezes his arm. "You know I can still show you the steps here later?" he suggests. 

"You would?" Chan asks, surprised. 

Minho turns in his hold and blinks at him. "Obviously? You wouldn't be the first one who needs a bit of extra time," he tells him. 

"I'd like that," he nods with a soft smile, his dimples showing. 

Minho smiles back at him before looking at you. "Is that alright with you? We'd have to start the movie a little later then."

"Of course, that's alright," you nod encouragingly. "We'll have plenty of time afterward." Your boys smile at you appreciatively. 

"The food's amazing, by the way," Minho tells you with a sweet smile. 

"Thank you, love," you say softly and watch Chan with a fond smile as he sits down next to Minho, handing him his plate. 

Chan places his hand on Minho's thigh beneath the table, squeezing it soothingly. Minho reaches down, resting his hand on his, and seems at ease again. 

Once you're all done, you gather all of your plates even as they start protesting. "Off you go, my loves, you still have work to do," you send them off, giggling. They kiss your cheeks at the same time, making you laugh before leaving. You smile softly, knowing your boys are alright and happy. Sometimes, all it took was a little talk to fix things.

tumblr tutorial (for my friend)

preemptively: if anyone sees this post other than my friend, this is just based on how i use tumblr. ive found that most tumblr tutorials ive seen either focus too much on OP's opinions or are genuinely kind of useless bc OP forgot why tumblr is hard to use for new users. also it is very long bc i got really autistic abt this sorry if it sucks . im sorry andrew 😭

dashboard settings

in dashboard setting you will find lots of features that i have turned off bc i dont like them. there is one setting here that is very important to have on though and that is TIMESTAMPS!! for some reason they arent turned on automatically but they can add a lot of context to posts.  i honestly dont remember what settings are on automatically and what ones aren't but most of them are just personal preference. these are the ones i have on and off. there are also themes! i think most people just use dark mode but im partial to goth rave. the rest of the settings are just personal preference. i dont like having based on your likes on bc i dont really use the like feature pretty much ever (more on this later.) these are what i have them set to.

content you see

in account settings you can mute tags or post content. when you mute a tag/word posts with whatever you've muted won't show up in searches. on your dashboard it will show that someone reblogged a post that has [thing you muted]. example:

this can be used to avoid seeing any posts abt a show your friend is really obsessed w rn but you hate, avoid having to scroll past one million x reader fanfics just to look at posts abt a character you like the character tag, to warn you before opening a post that there might be pictures or mention of something you might be sensitive to, for filtering mature or explicit content when you're scrolling in public, or the oft overlooked muting a blog name so if that blog is in the post you already know. both features have their limitations, in order for muting tags to work the post has to actually be tagged w that tag. 

also on that note, even if people reblog a post and dont tag it, if the original poster added the tag then it will be filtered. as an extension of this if you are tagging posts for the sake of everyone that uses tumblr please do not censor your tags (3v1L instead of evil or gr!m@ce instead of grimace.) it defeats the purpose of them because unless someone is muting every possible way you could potentially censor a tag then it's not going to get filtered.

directly underneath those settings you can enable or disable seeing mature content and/or blurring it. tumblr likes to flag random posts as mature content so i have mature content on and blurring off. users can also manually set content labels on their own posts, so it's not always tumblr being stupid.

xkit

if you're using tumblr on desktop it is quite useful to get the extension/addon xkit (rewritten.) i recommend going through the settings and seeing what you might find useful but the main one's i use are mutual checker, quick tags, vanilla audio/video, and no recommended. mutual checker puts a little symbol next to your mutuals on the dashboard, i forget who is and isn't my mutual otherwise and you have to manually check your followers list if you want to check without this. quick tags lets you set up tag bundles, but also automatically adds an original post tag when you make a post and an ask tag to asks once you set them up. i also have a tag "bundle" that's just my queue tag if i dont feel like typing it out. vanilla audio/video makes audio and video posts use the native controls. i really fucking hate the tumblr default video controls on desktop so this is one that i forget is necessary for me until i dont have it on. no recommended just removes recommended posts, communities, and blogs. i found these to generally not be something i cared abt seeing and often showed me stuff i actively disliked so i turned them off. 

queue

speaking of queue tags…. the queue is one of my favorite tumblr features. instead of reblogging a post immediately you can chuck it in the queue and it'll come out at some point in the future. not everyone uses queues and you definitely don't have to but i think it's fun. a lot of people, myself included, will tag queued posts so that it is obvious it was queued. you don't HAVE to do this but it is kind of like the opposite of liking someone's instagram post from three years ago if that makes sense . there is a culture of making cute queue tags… mine is queue wanted a hit like you wanted a hit by lcd soundsystem as an example ^_^ . 

you can adjust all these settings . i believe it defaults to 2 times a day. you can only add up to 1000 posts to your queue so if you're getting near the top you might want to up the post rate. also if you go to the tumblr labs tab in settings there is a feature called fast queue that i find quite useful, it's on both desktop and mobile. there's other things in tumblr labs so you can check it out but that's the only one i care abt.

search

to put it simply; the tumblr search function is dogshit. i honestly try to avoid using it bc it is pretty much useless unless you know very specific things abt the post . which is why tags are very important !! looking up the exact text in a post will not necessarily bring it up in a search but a tag will always come up. a lot of people use tags to organize their blogs so they can reliably find posts they've made or reblogged later. you can use either the search function on someone's blog (it's a magnifying glass below their bio) or go to their blog archive. [blog url].tumblr.com/archive . i pretty regularly look at my own archive to find posts ive reblogged. you can filter by tag, if you add /tagged/[tag] you can look up whatever tag you want, not just the options given. as well as the post type and month. 

blog settings

if you go to settings and then click on (one of) your blog(s) you can adjust that blog's settings. here you can edit your profile like on other social media but you can also enable custom themes, which let you edit the html of your blog. this only applies when it's [blog name].tumblr.com but is cool nonetheless. there are a lot of free to use and customizable themes if you look for them . you can enable or disable people being able to see your likes or who you follow, i dont remember if this is on automatically but you should probably disable it. you can change what tags are featured when someone uses the search function on your blog. if you dont add tags then it will default to your most used tags. you can choose who can reply to ALL your posts and who can mention you. you can manually change who can reply to individual posts of yours as well, didnt even realise you could do it blog wide until writing this. you can choose whether people can "blaze" your posts. this is uhm.. tumblr's version of sponsored posts but if you have it enabled then anyone can choose to blaze your posts. the idea of this is terrifying to me so i have it turned off. you can opt in or out of getting asks as well as whether you get anonymous asks. people sending asks on anon are unable to send media but you can choose whether people that are off anon can send media. i dont really know how submissions work because i pretty much only see them used by gimmick blogs. ive never been sent a submission. im sorry 😭😭. choose who can send you messages, choose whether your posts embed in links, remove your blog from searches, or third party sharing. this also where you can see who you've blocked

blocking

blocking on tumblr is sometimes really weird. honestly a lot of the nitty gritty eludes me but if you block a blog they wont be able to go to your blog. it does not mean you don't see posts that were made by or include blocked blogs on your dashboard. they can see your posts on their dashboard but can't reblog them (i dont know if this only applies if you're the original poster or if it extends to if you add to a post.) if a blocked blog replies to a post it will say a blocked account made a reply and you won't be able to see the reply or what blog it is. if you really dont want to see any posts w a certain blog in them you can use the mute post content feature as previously mentioned. also blocks are specific to each blog. i can see why this is the case but you can't just set it so that all your blogs block the same accounts which is kind of stupid. i only block from my main blog but i also only have one side blog. idk how other ppl w more side blogs navigate through this. 

bots

jumping off of that i will bring up that tumblr has a general bot problem that comes and goes. there are lots of ways to go abt avoiding them but it's likely that you're still going to get followed by some. the easiest way to deal w them is to just block. you should also report them but when you report a blog there's two main options. these are report for mature content or for spam. when it's a porn bot a lot of ppl think they should report for mature content but that actually just makes their blog get flagged and will not get the blog banned. so you need to mark them as spam !! if you just made an account your profile isn't customized and your blog is empty. you dont have to customize your blog or reblog posts but the people you follow are significantly more likely to block and/or report you because to them you look the same as a bot. there has been drama about this but you can do whatever you want, just dont get upset if you get blocked by people. 

dashboard vs for you vs your tags

the dashboard has been referenced many times in this post already but the dashboard (dash) is the following tab. it is all the posts and reblogs from the blogs you follow in chronological order. you can also choose for posts from tags you follow to show up intermittently but that's optional. the for you tab is tumblr's version of an algorithmically curated feed. most people dont use it but if your account is new and you dont follow many blogs it can be useful for finding more blogs to follow. the your tags tab is just a feed made exclusively of posts in the tags you follow. also bc this is probably a good spot to put this, communities exist. i dont use them and i dont understand the purpose of them. posts made to them dont show up on dashboards and you can react to them i think. tumblr tv also exists, it is tumblr's version of an algorithmically curated infinite scrolling video feed like all the examples i can give of this. i dont think that tumblr is set up for this to be ideal but if you really want to just watch videos and want to do it on tumblr then it's there (only on mobile.)

likes vs tags vs replies vs reblog additions

these have been a source of drama in some ways and also where i usually stop reading in "tumblr tutorials" because the OP starts stating their opinions as facts. i will do my best to explain in a way that is actually informational w how i understand them. other people definitely interpret them differently but im the one writing this and not them so :3

liking posts does have a purpose, it puts the post you liked in your likes tab! but because tumblr is (for most users) not based around algorithms likes dont directly "help" the OP like liking posts on other social media does. i dont personally bother with liking posts unless i dont want to reblog for whatever reason but want the OP to know that i read the post (like a mutual's vent post for example.) also this may not happen when you like posts a lot but there's always a thing telling me to turn post notifications on when i like someone's post which is extremely annoying to me and more reason for me to not like posts lol.

tags outside of for blog organization or visibility are often used by people to quietly talk about the post's content . the only people that will see the tags are the OP, people that follow you, and people that scroll through the tags on a post. tags also dont get added to the post so unless someone screenshots them and adds them then you're safe from getting a bunch of notifications. sometimes people "talk" in tags and will reference the previous reblog. in order to look at a previous reblog you go to the top of the post where it shows who reblogged it and click the three dots on the right and click view previous reblog to see what they're talking abt . you can also scroll through all the tags if you click the notes button and go to the reblogs tab. sometimes people (me) will make a post and add a lot of stuff to the tags instead of the actual post. there are lots of reasons one might do this and im not explaining myself.

replies do not necessitate reblogging a post, but are more easily seen by a lot more people. i personally only really use them when i want to talk directly to the OP . they're fun to look through though !!

reblog additions are added to a post and if someone reblogs that addition then it is forever out of your hands unless every person that reblogged it deletes it off of their blogs. this is scary to me so i basically never do this. i dont know what else to say about them 😭😭

They had to stay strong. They had to keep their wits about them. And most of all, they had to protect the rest of the team, including Team Leader, no matter the cost. The mission, the purpose of their organization, could not fail. They would give everything up so that it did not fail.

Smallest Teammate's captors handled them roughly, twisting their arms behind their back hard. One captor held Smallest Teammate's cuffed wrists in a bruising grip. "We'll be letting you go, just as soon as you're ready to start talking."

"I won't tell you anything! ANYTHING!" Smallest Teammate shouted as they shoved back against their captors.

"Then you can sit in here and think with your comrade. Perhaps it'll be nice to see there are worse things that can happen to you."

Smallest Teammate's mouth went dry as they were shoved into a cell and saw the familiar hunched over form of Team Leader. Team Leader's wrists were cuffed tightly behind their back, arms twisted painfully. They lay very still in the center of the cell. No. No. "They got you, too?" Smallest Teammate said as they scurried over to Team Leader.

Team Leader rolled onto their side and stared at Smallest Teammate, their bruised face pinched with pain. "Been here.....few days I think. Did they bring in anyone with you?"

Smallest Teammate shook their head. "No. No, I'm alone."

"Thank God for that. Well, not that you were captured. I mean that's terrible, I--"

Smallest Teammate nodded. "I know what you mean Team Leader. It's better just one than the entire team. I don't think they know where Teammate One and Teammate Three live. And Teammate Two is out," Smallest Teammate looked at the door pointedly before scooting closer to Team Leader, "doing some recon as Organization Leader ordered."

Team Leader looked relieved. "That's good about Teammate One and Three. I don't even know where they live."

"Oh, they live two apartment buildings over from me. So not far." Smallest Teammate's brow furrowed. "Hopefully they are more vigilant than I am."

"What recon mission did Organization Leader send Teammate Two on? So much has happened while I've been here. And Teammate Four, where are they?"

"Teammate Four's probably at the coffee shop on Main Street. They have a crush on the barista there." Smallest Teammate took a breath. "Organization Leader reckons they have a way to break into Oppositional Organization's base." They looked around. "Well, I guess that's where we are."

"How would they break in? Think that means they can rescue us without even knowing we are here?"

Smallest Teammate smiled. "Yep, they're definitely going to be able to save us. And as for how they can break in," Smallest Teammate dropped their voice low, "rumor has it that this place imports a lot of product and their receiving team isn't very thorough in their checks. Teammate Two is observing their shipment patterns to come up with a plan of attack."

Team Leader smirked. "Thank you, Smallest Teammate. That's all I needed. All we needed."

Smallest Teammate froze. "What do you--"

Team Leader popped the cuffs off their wrists. "You gave me everything I need to round up the rest of the team and take care of all of you once and for all."

"NO! It can't be. You....You....I trusted you!"

Team Leader chuckled. "I'm the perfect plant. I've been working against Organization for years from within. And now my life's work will be complete. Really, I should be thanking you more, Smallest Teammate."

Team Leader practically skipped out of the cell. They could hear Smallest Teammate's screams from far down the corridor. But it all didn't matter. They had won. They had beaten Organization. And now they just had to round up the rest of the team and then they could stand victorious at long last.

Everyone uses tags on Ao3 differently, but personally, as someone who's been writing fanfic on and off on that website for about a decade, there's two main reasons i tag:

So people who enjoy a trope can easily find what they are looking for. So anything that might interest people, any popular tag that applies to my fic (example: enemies to lovers, mutual pining, first kiss, etc; but also stuff like smut, fluff, porn without plot, blow jobs, etc)

So people can avoid stuff they don't wanna see, and this is where i get very detailed especially when it comes to sex acts and kinks because I am aware than anyone's mileage may vary. So someone might see a fic tagged "friends to lovers, slow burn, porn with feelings" and think "wow this is for me" but then see "anal fisting" and go "ew, never mind".

I want everyone to easily find my fic if they look up a specific tag that applies, but I also want anyone to be able to avoid my fic if they choose to exclude a certain tag in their filtered search.

Some people, especially younger, might not be aware that the filtered search is even an option, they might just open the ship or fandom tag and start scrolling, but that's not how most people operate on Ao3, because it's an archive, it's not social media, so you are supposed to search for the stuff you want (and filter out the stuff you don't want). You are supposed to do the work yourself. It's more fun and it's totally worth it!

This is why it's important to read the tags accurately. And also why a tag like Dead Dove: Do Not Eat used to be useful when it still had it's original meaning. Which was supposed to be "Hey, did you read the tags? Good, because that's exactly what happens in this fic, so don't read it and then act like I didn't warn you!" instead of, you know, a generic "There might be problematic content in here but I'm not telling you what", which defeats the purpose.

Anyway, if someone, for example, not anyone in particular, were to dislike or be triggered by a specific kink such as, and I'm gonna name a totally random one such as, let's say, OMORASHI, they can filter out the tag in their search and Ao3 will not even show it in the results!

Another option is also to mind your fucking business when you see something that clearly isn't for you and move on. It's simple, it's easy, and it's free. Almost like pouring river water into your socks :)

Just an update on what to expect:

If you've noticed that I haven't posted much on my multiple series in progress, or any fanfic really, that's because I've been temporarily displaced and haven't had the time, energy, or security to do much writing lately.

For those that were following last month when my family left the USA due to the anti-trans policies, we've been safe for the last 6 weeks. Thank you to everyone who helped with kind words or monetarily or providing info and resources, y'all really did make things a lot easier and less scary. We've gotten confirmation on when we can make the big move to Japan that we've been planning for years, and come May, we'll be across the Pacific! We're just working on the details now.

I assure everyone that follows for fanfic and thirsty thots that I will be posting more regularly once things calm down. Maybe even soon! I feel like I can finally breathe again, and for the next three weeks I have very few things to worry about. More time for simping. Some stability for stanning my men who did everything wrong but I forgive them.

April might bring challenges I'm already anticipating, and another brief period of few posts with my own thoughts or content. In other words, prepare for the reblog spam without tags I tend to do when I can't manage much else than to scroll through my feed. May, of course will be busy with the move, but by the end of that month I should be back to being my usual thirsty self. Goblin hours will recommence.

I won't be providing this personal update on the other blogs I run as most of them are for very specific purposes and this is my main and basically everything me blog. They will return to activity when I can get to them.

This is a UTMV OC/SELF-INSERT ask blog! If you are unconfortable with that, then please scroll :) the two main characters that will be seen here are the OCs of CODE and Puffball. They are currently in a relationship with eachother so there will be no shipping with others for the main two of this blog. However they are OCS. Not entirely sanses, so theres no self shipping going on here.

CODE is owned by my boyfriend, the owner of this blog, and Puffball is owned by me :3 we take no ownership or such for any other aus that may appear and/or drawn on this blog, since other aus will appear from time to time!

Asks will be awnsered by drawings by my boyfriend, thus meaning asks may take alittle more time to be awnsered, since every ask will get a drawing response!

Puffball and CODE will almost entirely always be seen lounging in the white void of ERRORs, therefore ERROR will probably appear afew times more then other aus. CODE was created by ink with the sole purpose of overseeing the coding of the classic UT universe to ensure nothing goes out of hand or such.
