Every now and again I'll see someone in the mcyt fandom ask "should I tag this as shipping if this is a clip/irl relationship/what have you?" and obviously I know the original point of the shipping tags is for them to be blocked by people who don't want to see fans talk about the characters/creators that way, and they don't know what to do when the creators themselves are responsible for the content in the post, but 1.) tags work both ways; tag it for the people who do want to find it, too, and 2.) the question so often comes off as "does it count as shipping if it's canon 🤔?" which, as kindly as I can put it, is stupid. Obviously it's still shipping if it's canon.

Ryoshu lets out a ‘hmpf’ sound in a what that you can’t really tell if she’s annoyed or amused. She’s considered pretty intimidating by most so it is a bit funny to her to see you acting so bold. Especially when others look at you with disbelief. A few times you could swear the corners of her lips moved upwards. After all, she does enjoy a good quip or any other display of sharp wit. Which then leads to her teasing you right back, though her timing is always unexpected. It’s almost like a little game you two play, seeing where you can push the other one (within reason). And if asked, Ryoshu will shamelessly admit that she enjoys that part of your shared routine

With Rodya it’s a bit hit or miss. It really depends on what you say and it’s hard to read what will get a pass. I mean, to someone who doesn’t pay much mind to her, everything gets a pass. But there are times where you unknowingly will hit a sore spot and her joking demeanour will become a lot more rehearsed. Her main way of avoiding her self conscious thoughts is by making little jabs at others, so don’t be surprised if her ‘silly payback’ stings a bit. Sometimes it’s fine. But it’s not easy to tell if your teasing will make her blush or if it will ruin her day. Her ego, despite the front she puts up, is incredibly fragile and even when you’re innocently teasing her, she might assume you’re looking down on her. Even if she won’t outright say it, you will feel her discomfort shortly after

It’s only a little less unlikely for Don to misconstrue your words. Her love language is very earnest and genuine, so sometimes she just doesn’t get the purpose of your teasing. However, she’s less likely to assume anything bad by it and mostly it gets the desired reaction out of her. Doesn’t really tease you back though, it’s just not her style of affection, I think

You’d think Hong Lu falls somewhere in the similar category but he’s way more witty than he gets credit for and he goes along with your teasing. He sees it as the playful banter it is and when you least expect it he’ll innocently say something to get you just as worked up as you wanted to make him. Always a bit of a (pleasant) “jumpscare” when he does that. Hard to out-tease the lad, but it’s always a good time for both parties when you try :3

Ishmael gives you the most typical reaction. She’s way more used to being the one that does the teasing so when you start with your sillies, she tries to “fight back”. No luck though, you usually get her to flush and there’s no doubt your words affect her. She huffs something out for you to shut up but she’s not very convincing whenever she does so

But if you think Ish reacts strongly, you need to look at Heathcliff. Most times he’ll get absolutely awkward about it. Sure, sometimes he’s a bit oblivious. A bit like when he got offended that Dante thought he frequented clubs. When he was informed that it was a positive kind of comment, he got all awkward and didn’t really know what to do with himself, since that was not the kind of comment he expected to be directed at him. So if you want him worked up and temporarily not-functional, I absolutely recommend teasing the bloke

On a surface level, Faust is not only not affected but not very receptive to your teasing. She responds very matter-of-factly and with the same seriousness in her vacant eyes as if she was announcing the end of your work day. But don’t be fooled. There are occasions where she’ll pull an uno reverse card on you. Responding calmly she’ll inquire about the meaning behind your playful comment until you verbally run into a corner to the point where you’re admitting to the affectionate undertones of your teasing. You don’t even know how she does it. One second you’re being all silly and flirty and the next you’re all surrendered telling her how you like her, getting flustered by her painfully practical approach

The main difference with Outis is that she might genuinely not get it. Her guard’s always up and she’s been restless for so long, without a safe place to call her own, that playful banter almost seems like a luxury she can’t afford. She’s still in the mindset of surviving day to day (I mean… her job doesn’t exactly make it easy to let go of that notion) and you’re so casual with her. It makes her feel like a version of herself she had to bury a long time ago. But because of that contrast, she sometimes needs time to catch your teasing tone. She never assumes you mean anything bad by your comments, she likes you enough to grant you her patience and understanding way more than the others, but it takes up to 3 tries for her to catch the intent of your words. She’s not very good at reading back, but if you want to try flustering her, this is a good start

Then we have Meursault. He just really doesn’t get it. Each comment you make gets a painfully serious response out of him and you can’t really tell if he’s messing with you or if he really doesn’t get it. Knowing him, it might be the latter. Though if your teasing is more of the physical kind, you might affect him a bit. On the inside though, sorry, but he won’t let that kind of feeling you give him affect his “professional approach”

And we’re back to characters you would make an absolute mess out of. This time, the title goes to Dante. They are so used to being a tool and not having people pay much close attention to them (other than examining their changed body) that your teasing takes them by surprise. Add to that the fact that they can be rather awkward at times and you get the picture of your manager being delightfully graceless in their attempts to give any proper reaction or response. A few times your coworkers joked that you broke them. That did not help to make Dante more coherent

Before opening himself up, Yi Sang would be rather defeatist, not engaging much in your silliness. But that changes after he gets some time to grow and heal when the bus leads him to revisit his past. It’s much more easy to get a blush or a faint smile out of him and he might even surprise you with some (quite wordy) responses of his own

The only word to describe Gregor’s reaction is ‘exasperated’. He’s not like, outright mad or anything. Yeah, I mean, you do kind of have to watch not to hit a painful spot, but it’s easier to avoid with him (just no bug stuff and you’re pretty much in the clear) plus, as awful as I feel for saying this, he’s way too defeatist to counter most painful comments too. His main thing though is that he can’t believe how bold and blatant you are. Especially teasing him in this way. Him, out of everyone in the bus. I mean, he can’t call himself a catch and the way he sees it, there are much more attractive, put together and younger people you could be going after. Publically at that. Besides, some things you say are just way bolder than anything he could even say when drunk (or so he tells himself, tipsy Gregor is not as subtle as sober Greg would like to believe). If you knew him less, you could think that the way he sighs and shakes his head is a sign of total rejection, but that’s not the case. To be fair, if he tried to respond properly he would probably be more awkward. Romance is foreign to him and it stresses him out that he can’t really guess what people say in situations like this. The way you know you did good is when he completely goes blank. Honestly, he looks a bit staggered. The one time he did try to make a sound, he sounded like that too-

Lastly, Sinclair is a tough one. Because I don’t think it’s just so cut and dry that I can just say he gets cute and blushy. He’s… eager at heart (he wants to have someone, so having you show interest is definitely big for him) but so inexperienced and anxious, it doesn’t help his case. But he’s also one of the sinners that is used to being seen less-than and his insecurity makes him fear that your teasing might have different implications. He’s been called useless and naive, amongst other things, so many times. And he doesn’t want to be seen as some weak willed pushover. Especially not by you. You don’t think that, do you? He prays you don’t. His work is tough on him as is, it would be a lie to say you aren’t a beacon of light amongst his gore and guilt filled world. You’ve seen how easy it was to get him down when his coworkers made comments about his appearance. So it’s 50/50 with him. He might try to object. Sometimes he might actually come off too strongly. Other times he just fumbles with his words. And sometimes, when he is sure that your comment is definitely a good natured one, he just fumbles in general. Honestly, this is a half joke but I can almost see him blurt out ‘I want you’ in response like one time and then scurry off terrified wishing to never be resurrected again

hey!! loving your recent posts about romance in writing.

i need some adviceim writing a story that has a romantic b-plot between my protagonist and his childhood best friend. the main story is very dramatic and high fantasy. i was wondering if you had any tips on specifically romances that arent the main focus? (but still important to the plot!)

i assume the broad strokes of chemistry and intrigue are still there, but is there anything more specific? (tldr i would like the long post /lh)

Honestly, I'm writing something similar, high-stakes high fantasy with a slightly background romance and at least in my case, my "romantic leads" are going to be seperated from their initial meeting for a long time, and unique circumstances and societal expectations help (and hinder) their relationship before they're even together romantically.

But yeah, I would say, for what I assume is probably a slow burn of friends to lovers, definitely work on building up the chemistry between them, that they enjoy spending time together, that they can rely on one another, that they don't always see eye to eye, but they truly do care about each other that they will work to resolve their conflicts...

One important thing for building up a good romance, is you should aim for balance; both partners should be equals in the relationship, both able to depend upon and rely on the other -- and they' don't have to be carbon copies of each other, (obviously), but try to make sure that both partners have believable strengths and weakneses that aren't just your typical Heroic Flaws of 'being too self-less / self-sacrificing', and maybe both partner helps balance out each other's flaws.

The other thing in terms of balance is -- social balance. Is one of your characters a millionaire while the other is living paycheck to paycheck?

(While it is easy and tempting to write a story about a character living the wish fulfillment of marrying into a rich family and living in the lap of luxury for the rest of their life (aka, not having to worry about being evicted from one too many unpaid bills) , I find it a much more satisfying story to see the Rich Asshole Characters dragged down into the mud and forced to see how people like themselves cause all these issues for society at large by hoarding their wealth and paying their workers in pennies, without seeing the people they interact with as human being deserving of dignity and security.

Especially stories where Rich Asshole tries to court Working Class person and gets rejected for being, you know, an asshole and slowly works on improving themselves as a person and trying to make the world a better place one cut CEO paycheck at a time before they reunite and Previously-Rich Asshole respects their previous decision and they become actual friends and then graduate over time to lovers after actually getting to know one another.)

Even beyond the matter of wealth, you should keep an eye on the social status of your main pair; if one person is a much higher class than the other, or the relationship starts out as one with one in a position of strong authority over the other (like a boss at work, or a Lord of a Castle courting the serving maid at the local pub), those relationship issues should definitely be addressed sooner rather than later.

Is one of your characters pressured or forced into the relationship because of the social inequality, and this never gets addressed within the duo? Be prepared for readers to notice right away, and if one half of your pair spends their entire time worrying about disappointing or offending their partner and getting banished from the whole country as a result, that is definitely something you need to make an actual plot point and address it within the narrative.

It's perfectly fine for your characters to start off on unequal footing, but if you really want their relationship and love to have a solid foundation by the end, that unequal footing needs to be resolved in some manner, either simply through clear and honest communication about each others fears and worries, or through deliberate choices by the "higher" partner to lower themselves down to an even playing field.

(if you want an excuse for your Royal+Servant couple to elope, running away to the countryside to live as simple townsfolk where no one knows you're a prince/princess is both a fun plot, and depending on the story, can set up some Future Conflict when the Estranged Royal in question gets recognized)

So, for a High Fantasy Friends To Lovers type story, it's probably going to mainly depend on where and how your characters do most of their interacting.

Are they in the same Party on an Epic Quest?

Show them talking and working together,

checking in with each other, seeking out each other's opinion,

doing small favors for the other without a thought,

staying up late beside the fire to keep talking long after the others have gone to bed,

putting their sleeping bags next to each other/sharing a tent together,

Give them inside jokes and nicknames for each other,

When they start developing romantic feelings for each other, slowly build up to it; there's a reason slow-burns are so popular! Just don't "bait and switch" your readers forever with a "will-they-won't-they" plot, as going too long with constant teasing and then snatching it away for a new plot twist to get in the way can lead to your audience resenting the relationship that seemingly-will-never-be.

When one side of the pair is narrating and is describing their friend, slowly start adding in slightly more details your character is probably not aware they're noticing, like that they are always looking at their friend first and foremost and noticing more and more of their behaviors, starting to notice emotional cues more and more, before they realize while looking at their gorgeous friend's lustrous black hair that oh my gods I just called my friend gorgeous and realize they're crushing on their friend.

some more detailed examples of things to build up the relationship:

Going out of their way to Forage for the other person's favorite food to surprise them with

while one person is off bathing or gathering fire wood, have the other mend some of their clothing, sharpen their sword, set up their tent, etc

If one character has some kind of allergy, show the other character having a bag they always, always have with them that contains a potion or special herb to help their friend in an emergency (if the friend's own one fails for any reason,) like a back-up epipen.

Maybe one character has poor eyesight, and the other character instinctively reads things out loud to them, or describes their surroundings.

Oh, and this is one example in particular that I don't think happens too often, but it does seem to be an easy way to get cheap drama in a romance:

Once your romantic leads finally do get together, don't immediately bring on the "betrayal" plot-lines, or have the other go behind one's back, manipulate the other, etc.

For the love of the gods, do not pull a Liv Moore / Major Lillywhite situation from iZombie.

If your story is a romance... your audience *should not* come away from your story firmly (and correctly) convinced that your main romantic leads are far better friends than they are lovers, because they respect and love each other when they're Just Friends but the *second* they start dating, they're bringing on the gaslighting, spying, manipulation, jealous rages, etc.

Oh, and speaking of jealous rages: Like all things, it's fine to have a relationship have a rocky, tumultuous start. But if one half of the relationship flies off the handle any time someone so much as breathes in their partner's direction... that is going to lead to some major, major problems.

Respect and trust for each other *needs* to extend to anyone your characters might be jealous of.

If one half of your romantic duo get pissed off and demands the other never see or talk to any of their friends ever again because Half A is convinced that they're trying to 'steal' Half B away by seducing them, or taking time away from Half A, etc, that is the time for a ground-breaking, relationship-testing fight--

-- no matter which way it goes or how your characters handle (or don't handle) the scenario, Half A needs to realize how much they are hurting and isolating Half B by trying to keep them away from their loved ones, and that if they actually respect and trust Half B, they'll *show* that, and learn to deal with whatever emotional baggage they may have in a way that *doesn't* hurt the ones they love.

um. trying to think of other things I love or loath in Romance Tropes, but that's all I've got off the top of my head lol. I have no idea how long this post took to write but it was probably a solid half hour of me staring at my screen and Pondering The Tropes.

Scooby-Doo Analysis: Why Scrappy-Doo is a Poorly Executed Good Idea

 (Warning, many personal opinions ahead!)

Scrappy-Doo's tenure as a main character in the Scooby-Doo franchise is loved by some and hated by many. Personally, I'm not a big fan of most Scooby-Doo projects from the 80's (with the exception of Scooby-Doo! and the Ghoul School and A Pup Named Scooby-Doo!), but the thing that stands out to me about Scrappy in particular is that he's not a bad idea.

Honestly, I think Scrappy is a good idea on paper, the problem is just bad execution.

Giving Scooby a fearless and naïve nephew who genuinely thinks he can take the monsters in a fight and consistently needs to be rescued by Shaggy and Scooby, who know better, is actually a really fun concept. I think it's really endearing when Shag and Scoob have kids put in their care and they have to step up and be brave for them. You see this with the Grimwood Girls in the aforementioned Ghoul School and with the Secret Six puppies and the campers in Camp Comeoniwannascareya from What's New, Scooby-Doo?. I just find this kind of dynamic really fun to watch, it's cute, really stinkin' cute, ya know? And I wish that I got the same feeling from Scrappy.

This could be the subject of its own post, but my dream Scooby-Doo project is a remake of the 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo. If that ever happened, I would actually love to see Scrappy make a comeback in a revamped form!

So, let's try to figure out why Scrappy is so disliked and what can be done to fix it!

Design

Okay, honestly, I don't think this is that bad of a design./gen The problem is that it feels more like it belongs in cartoons with the likes of Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, and Snagglepuss that are more heavily stylized and "cartoony" than in the semi-realistic world of Scooby-Doo. For reference, here's Scooby.

No, Scooby is not perfectly realistic, but his proportions are much closer to those of a real dog than Scrappy's. Scrappy almost feels like he exists in a different art style than the rest of the gang. The main offenders in his design being his huge head/tiny body, not very dog-like body, and the fact he typically walks upright. The few times he does walk on all fours he looks unbalanced because of the wonky head/body ratio. (I tried to find a picture of this rare phenomenon, but Scrappy's lawyer seems to have wiped all photographic evidence from the internet!/hj)

So, the first step in fixing Scrappy is just giving him better proportions and a slightly more dog-like body.

I think the Secret Six are a good example of how far a more dog-like body can go.

The have similar big head/small body proportions to Scrappy but have much bigger paws and are generally more "dog-shaped", which helps a lot!

Likewise, Scooby's design in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo! is a great example of improved proportions.

He's much less realistic than his adult counterpart but his head/body ratio is much more well-balanced than Scrappy. (And this design is just much cuter in opinion, is that just me?)

Voice, Dialogue, and Behavior

This is the section where I think a lot of the Scrappy hate comes from. (Quick disclaimer, I have not watched the entirety of the Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo Show and most of what I have seen past season one I have not seen in many, many, many years. Even as a small child I hated how unstructured and nonsensical it was, yes, I was pretentious, no, nothing has changed!/lh/t But the point is, my memory is probably a little fuzzy, so keep that in mind!)

If Scrappy was brought back in a new series or movie one of the first changes I would make would be having him be voiced by an actual child. Adults often voice kids in long-running series for the sake of keeping the voice consistent and they usually do a good job, but I honestly think Scrappy would benefit from being voiced by a real kid. I think that would bring a lot of sincerity that Scrappy typically lacks.

Dialogue and behavior are a little trickier. If you remember "Uncle Scooby", "PUPPY POWER!", "let me at 'em!", and "I'm gonna splat 'em!", then you remember half of all Scrappy-Doo dialogue. Now, none of Scrappy's little catchphrases are inherently bad. They actually have the potential to be really cute, especially if said by that theoretical child actor, the problem is just that they get overused. Variations of these same few lines get used again and again and become annoying. I think moderation is the solution to this one!

Now, to the meat of my issue with Scrappy-Doo as a character; why does he act like a mini adult? This frustrates me to no end! Every time he gets in trouble, he uses the excuse "I'm just a puppy!" Really, Scrappy? Really? You're smart enough to think up elaborate "Scrappy Traps", keep Shaggy and Scooby on track, and run whole freaking con jobs with Flim-Flam, but you're not smart enough to realize you can't take the monster in a fist fight? Really?

The rest of you see the discrepancy, right? It's not all in my head?

I genuinely love that Scrappy is literally scrappy. It's great that this little guy™ truly believes he can beat all the big scary monsters in a fight and that his globe-trotting, mystery-solving uncle is a fearless and heroic role model. These are great attributes for a little kid character, but most of the time Scrappy is not filling a little kid role.

Shaggy and Scooby need a "straight man" to bounce off of and once Fred, Velma, and Daphne were dropped from the series, Scrappy is the only one left to fill that role. This is such wasted potential. The point of bringing in a child for Scooby and Shaggy to look after should be to force them to step up, be the adults in a way they normally don't have to, and engage with the story in ways they typically would avoid. But Scrappy only does this part of the time because the rest of the time he's filling in for other characters. For some reason this still continues even after Daphne is reintroduced, with her and Scrappy becoming co-holders of the sacred brain cell. Why? This decision is baffling to me.

Also, he doesn't just act like a mini adult, he acts like a mini human adult. Admittedly, this is a criticism that can be leveled at the Doo family in its entirety. Scooby, I think is mostly okay in that regard, but many of his relatives lean way to close to the human side of the spectrum for it to be funny or comfortable, like, they're fully in Pinkie Cooper territory!

So, if I was going to reinvent Scrappy, I'd put a lot of focus on letting him be a child, not a mini adult, and more specifically making him be more of a puppy. Puppies are adorable, destructive, certified land piranhas. How endearing would it be if Scrappy actually acted like that? What if instead of trying to fist fight all the ghoulies he bit and chewed them instead? Imagine how cute it would be to watch him try to chew a zombie's shoe or latch onto a vampire's cape and through a mouthful of fabric gleefully shout, "I got 'em!"

It would be cute, right?

Overuse

The final problem is just that when he's there, he's always there. For the majority of the 80's Scrappy was a permanent member of the character roster, a status not even Fred or Velma had. The result was just an oversaturation of Scrappy.

If he was ever to be brought back, I think he should be used much more sparingly, just being a recurring character in a few episodes here or there, more like Scooby-Dum is in The Scooby-Doo Show. This makes it less likely that fans will get sick of him and also potentially solve the final problem that's been bugging me about Scrappy; where is his mom?

Ruby-Doo, Scooby's sister and Scrappy's mom, only appeared in a single episode of the Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo series and that was a flashback episode, which begs the questions, Ruby-Doo, Where are You?

Why did she ship off her only child to her brother and let him go on life-threatening adventures? I've pondered this question for many years and so far haven't come up with an answer that isn't weirdly dark for Scooby-Doo. If Scrappy was just around occasionally though it would be a lot easier to say he's visiting Uncle Scooby for the weekend or Shaggy and Scooby are babysitting for a couple of days. Ruby would also be a recurring character in this scenario, and we could see her actually being a part of her son's and brother's lives, which, at this point, is kind of a novel concept!/lh

actually im not super into shipping i think? i definitely value being able to imagine a dynamic for even the nichest pairings and have a lot of fun stretching or emphasizing certain parts of each characters' personalities to get them to work the best while opening up the potential for some development on each characters' side (thats exactly why im doing the ship bingo! its a ton of fun!), but theres very few things i actually like. Ship beyond surface level thoughts tbh. and recently the things i actually do ship have gotten increasingly niche. so enjoy this ramble that mostly pertains to specifically me and only me LMAO /lh

people might be able to tell ive been getting very into dametaberge. oh my god im so insane. no one look at me. dmk+jambacult found family Real. i have like three comics in my drafts for them. its mostly dametaberge thoughts rn but i like to think susie joins them later to make a poly ship. dmk and susie are a little tense at first but susie is, "like so over her knight phase," as she says, which dmk is extremely conflicted about whether to be offended or relieved at. and then they learn how to relax around each other and are always the two in the relationship to have awful destructive ideas, which flamberge vetos or approves of on a case by case basis. they get very happy and excited when flamberge approves of their awful plans

and of course my beloved gsa ships.............. theres falsgato which i am incredibly insane about thanks to my friend dragging me into it and now its a thing in my animeverse. enemies to friends to lovers I KEEP SAYING IM SO WEAK FOR THAT. dragato was a huge asshole to falspar for Various reasons regarding the nature of the gsa and perhaps dragatos own personal insecurity, but once they lost the war they got to bond since dragato like, realized how little the shit he antagonized falspar for actually mattered in the first place. and falspars a guy who really sees the best in people and ahahahghdjk its a whole thing its a whole thing i wont go into it rn LOL

theres also metarthur which is my very very beloved longtime rarepair. which i um. uh. ahahahah............. i get very slightly nervous talking about on main because a lot of people hc arthur as meta knights dad or parental figure but i shouldnt be nervous about hc differences really....... anyways theyre supposed to be like parallels of each other. people who are opposites thematically (arthur being leader of the gsa; mk being a former deeply infamous demon beast) who find themselves in similar positions in that they both kinda struggle with their sense of purpose vs their sense of self. meta knight sees his past struggles in arthur and so he finds himself drawn to him. he cant really Solve his situation, but (during their war-time relationship specifically) he hopes to offer some solace to him which functions as a form of catharsis to mk himself too. the two get to connect and understand each other in a unique way. i wont get too into this one right now either lol since the dynamic changes a lot depending on if its their during-war relationship or post-war relationship but theres the basics. i have a comic expanding on their general relationship in my drafts too but its at the bottom of my to-do list tbh. maybe someday though

im only into this one casually nowadays but morphogala... you really cant go wrong with "knight of death saves the greatest warrior in the galaxy from their torturous fate". something something the themes of wishing for the release of death being subverted into yes, death itself releasing you but in a way that actually Saves and rescues you instead. the hope and love in spite of all of the hopelessness AHHHHGH the themes of this one make me so weak. theres so much potential...... i really love this one on an aesthetic level too

You brought up an AU, where Q does join the crew. And that would actually give your fanart an interesting context of Q having gotten PIcard to trust him more and more and considering Q does still weir command red maybe the reason Riker is so angry with Q is because Q has been gunning for the position of being Picards 'Number One'. Or at least that's what Riker interprets Q regularly sitting on his seat and being so close to the Captain.

OOooooooo that would definitely be a main contention between those two methinks. Considering I was thinking of Q Who in terms of when that'd happen, I feel like Riker and Q when in the same episode would have multiple lines of bickering or plain old arguing on the best course of action.

Q's their guide who's billions of years old and knows his way around and possibly how not to offend whoever he might introduce them to vs Riker the human who is much more aware of the limits on the crew and their capabilities, like a good first officer should.

On the color thing, Q insists its not a big deal (after all he looks best in red, its just his color!) and he abides the rest of their wishes with the ship and crew rules can't he have this little thing? 9 - worst part of canon? gaaaaaah this is so hard because I genuinely think TGAAC is so so good. If I had to say anything it would be the pacing. Some cases really drag, especially 1-3 and 2-2. 2-2 was the worse offender because it's introduced as being super important to the plot and then the actually plot important bit is just right at the end with the collar. A very long case for not a lot of pay-off.

10- worst part of fanon? I have so many. I mentioned in a previous ask that I think some of the fandom has a tendency to portray Ryuunosuke as naive and incompetent post-canon in a way the ignores his development, and also how the fandom tends to either give Van Zieks way more or way less nuance than he really has. Also not a fan of the difference in focus on the characters who are 'descended' from those involved in the professor case. I admit I'm a little guilty of this, especially since my main dgs fic is kazuma-centric, but Kazuma's place in everything as Genshin's son + Van Zieks' place in everything as Klint's brother gets so much more focus than Gina's place as Gregson's apprentice and Maria's place as Courtney's daughter. We know why.

Yes, it wasn't accepted within the general culture or society at the time - probably 'worse' in late 1800s/early 1900s britain than Japan as it was more present in legislation and trials like that of Oscar Wilde brought more attention to it - and I will never rag on other queer people for exploring the effects of homophobia through art. But I personally have a strong disliking for fiction (fan or otherwise) that boils down both present and past queer experiences to our suffering. 2) lets be honest if anyone's doing that it's Van Zieks /lh thank you for submitting!!

night at the museum: Kamunrah rises again review

-i was binging the hell out of the night at the museum franchise (I chose to start with Smithsonian museum arc (2) then i’ll end with one). I watched the fourth movie and have many thoughts, as someone who loves this franchise to bits. (If you dont see mentions of the first movie its bc i havent seen it yet from my movie marathon)

1. The timeline is hella off im so confused about it. Nick is in highschool but NATM3 he was going to college?? Laa is there so it can’t be post NATM 2. If it was post NATM3 the best solution to this problem is having the adventure set IN THE UK???

2. I honestly am confused why kamunrah was revived again such a strange character to bring back i mean he was already dead before why bring him back?? (He was so iconic in the 2nd movie. Has funny bits in the fourth but third act bore me sorry) I genuinely wish there was a different bad guy instead

3. Infact i genuinely wish they had a small series for post NATM3 arc wherein its about the British museum rather than our main cast. Theres so much room and potential to introduce interesting historical figures too! Heck even make some of the animal statues talk that would be interesting (i doubt thats possible even with the tablet but shush) (is this an excuse to bring back rebel wilson to be the night guard-maybe Jdjfjsjdk/lh)

4. I love Octavius design he is not ugly to me at all infact he looks amazing in the movie! I love his face and his hair they look good. (I question why Jed is ginger and clean shaven, hes better off looking scruffy and scrappy looking) SIDE NOTE I LOVE THEM ADOPTING A CAT IT WAS MEANT TO BE !! (Their dynamic was off but them being clingy asf to each other made things less unberable)

5. Sacagewea and Joan of arc be lookin fruity in that one scene I see yall HDDJSJ, cute momment too. I love their respective character designs they are very fun plus Sacagewea is more plot relevant for once im glad for that:’D. Ik Joan of Arc wasnt there for the previous movies but my only answer to that plothole is shes also a new exhibit that was installed before NATM4. Or she could be in the British museum AKA AN EXCUSE TO HAVE JOAN AND LANCELOT TO INTERACT BRO THAT WOULD BE COOL

6.i love these movies but NATM4’s final fight scene wasn’t as impactful as the others. No.2 was so fucking good at their fight scenes the characters battling it out with a good amount for both sides, theres different spotlights for the characters even if its one second. The third movie it was more of a chase scene ft. LION STATUES BEING BIG CATS GAHHH<33 and Lancelot identity crisis poor man. This fourth one felt like a fight you see in every cartoon or show, just felt not as creative? Except when Nick destroyed the bird soldiers eye with arrows that was cool.

7. WHY DOES DEXTER NOT LOOK LIKE A CAPUCHIN??? He looks like a generic orange or brown ish monkey. I looked up how they look like irl and they tend to have multi colored fur so his design rlly confused the hell out of me. I genuinely love capuchins bc of dexter and able (choosing them over chimpanze’s just saying)

8.Lightning round bc I RAN OUT OF SPACE: Mia looks cool (wish she was used more in the story), Akmunrah not being there is so saddening, Nick and the bi sticker ™, Fun call back to the subway scene very cute, I love the oil painting joke its corny and useful to the chase, OFFENDED THERES NO BIG ANIMAL IN THE MAM MUSEUM EXCUSE??😭😭 theres always a big boy in there wdym (Rexy, Octopus, Trixie),Comic convention joke was my fave its such a cute moment

* remus is not invited at all but just shows up and r and v immediately freak out

* virgil shuffles under the table to hide from him but remus sees him (and remus isnt there to be mean he actually wants in on their dynamic but hes not subtle at all and doesnt ask or discuss it with them he just tries to insert himself into it)

* so when he sees virge scared hes like 'awwww poor wittle baby youre stuck under the table! here lemme help'

* and he grabs v's hands without asking and hoists him up but he pulls way too hard and Virgil flies upwards and his head bangs on the table so hard the sound echoes - he immediately falls back to the floor and is silent for a moment before he starts whimpering

* remus' eyes fly wide and he looks at roman who is staring at him im shock with his mouth wide open

* rem: 'f*ck he's really light' then virgil's whimpers turn into cries

* 'what the heck did you do that for!!' roman seethes,

* remus is like sassy 'I was being a good brother and helping him!'

"you're not his brother!!' roman yells.

remus frowns 'but we're twins and youre his brother so-'

"it doesnt work like that!' roman collapses by virgil 'vee does it hurt bad?' v cries, his hand secured protectively over his head and his eyes firmly shut, he nods lightly

* 'shoot,' roman growls and rushes out to go get their CGs (who are having a discussion with janus) yelling 'don't touch him!' then he goes ‘Mom! Mommy!’

* remus is frozen in place staring between the doorway and the crying boy on the floor

* remus wants to help but is really lost for what to do. he knows that the others are always really close to v when they comfort him so he jumps and lands on his butt right in front of virgil

* v doesnt even notice hes there because of the crying and his eyes being closed

* 'uh hey, how about something to dull the pain?' remus summons a bottle of whiskey and sloshes it in front of the baby

* vee looks at it through tears and just cries more and wails ‘wo-wo’

* when the logan rushes in he looks at remus angrily as he crouches to hug virgil 'you hit him??'

* remus is offended and sees roman glaring at him 'what no! i tried picking him up but he was really light so he just,' remus summoned a frying pan and hit his own head with it with a resounding thwang, 'on the table'

* logan doesnt respond he is busy feeling around virgils head for any bleeding or bumps and checks virgils eyes for concussion, virgil is squirmy and doesnt like the strange attention he just wants to cuddle ‘Mama’ he whines

* but logan is keeping him at a distance while he checks him over 'shh shh what a brave boy. You're being so good for Mama. We can have lots of cuddles in just a minute'

* 'I need you to be a really clever baby for me now. Can you tell how many fingers Mama is holding up?' holds up three fingers

13. What POV is your WIP in? 

I like working with third person unreliable narrators, but I tend to switch POV from scene to scene, depending on which character’s thoughts I want to focus more and which characters I want to describe more in each scene. I’m gonna try my best to divide the fic so that the four main characters have more or less the same number of POV scenes up to a certain point, and after that point it will pretty much be in Paraguay’s and Brazil’s POV only.

 17. Describe your favorite character in your WIP? 

YOU???? YOU WANT ME TO CHOOSE??? BETWEEN THESE FOUR???

Listen I just ashdaldkas I love them all too much, I CANT choose. But if we’re talking in the fic specifically, I think the character with the most interest arc for me in the fic (aka the most difficult one to plan and understand and write but oh well ahsau) is Argentina, and since I’m using the LH characters, Martín. I think he’s the one in the weirdest position, there’s just so much internal conflict (both in the sense of internal conflict in the country and in himself as a person), he’s very proud but very messy and a very passionate man with a lot of anger and a lot of strong feelings but he’s also brave and smart but impulsive, he’s just….hes a MESS and I love it audhsus and he also has the most complicated relationship with the other three, bc if for para and uru brazil is just an invader and an oppressor (well, its more than that but in essence), with argentina the two have a sort of family bond, uruguay is like his little brother who though he loves very much he had never respected and thus makes Uruguay resent him, while Paraguay he does respect and has a more distanced but equal relationship but as Paraguay starts to participate more in the affairs of the region argentina starts to see him as a problem and as the story progresses the two have this weird dynamic bc part of martin wanted to be on his side (just like uru too), because they could’ve been allies, but another part of him is somehow offended that Paraguay had to his eyes disrespected him. And well all his efforts to justify the war to himself, specially after it ends, bc during the war he hated it but after its done Argentina wanted to pretty much absorb Paraguay to the point it probably would’ve stopped existing, so there’s just so many SIDES to him and to this and god I have no idea how I’m gonna translate all that into a coherent fic bc guess what NOTHING ABOUT HIM IS COHERENT. And don’t get me started on his relationship with brazil bc UGH, what a mess, theyre rivals, but theyre no longer enemies, but they hate each other, and they don’t trust each other, and as countries they recognize they CANT trust each other and that they’ll be at war again at any point, but as men and soldiers put in the frontlines of a terrible situation they bond and fall in love and as I said martin is very PASSIONATE and there’s a lot of struggling about his feelings, to make sense of his feelings for lu and his feelings about the war when at some brazil becomes synonymous with the war for him and the edges between his feelings get more and more blurred because at the end of the day he’s still a man and a soldier and URGH I need to shut up
