so that person who screenshotted my thing now has like. Half their posts (at least since then) clowning on me and other people like me so for the record

the issue isn’t headcanons or having fun. Those are great. The issue is that the majority of people are repeatedly going out of their way to ignore everything canon (which like. Why are you watching the show if you don’t enjoy what’s there. Adding is fine but why are you straight up replacing) make their headcanons and then criticize and harass anyone who just talks about the text of the show! And then says their view is canon!

I don’t even disagree with their beliefs all I said was while he’s likely attracted to men he’s def for sure attracted to women because he was interested in other women than his wife!

This happened to when I expressed displeasure at 90% of the fandom not knowing that walking across country to see Hawkeye again was about him fulfilling the promise to see each other in goodbye farewell amen and that it would’ve not been as wonderful as they thought (Mike Farrells words! Not mine!) because all anyone talked about was how gay it was. Like 90% of people shouldn’t have to actively be kept on the dark to make your specific idea for how to ship it (Not even shipping it at all! Just using that specific thing to do it that is canonically about them falling out of touch! Why would you want that as your gay rep!) work.

like is it really that hard to not directly contradict canon and then whole heartedly say “no this is real in show stuff and to disagree is homophobic” (again! Not even saying he can’t like men or fuck them silly or anything! Just to stop erasing canonical stuff for it!) and to maybe use the word bi instead of gay. Is me being frustrated that the only kind of queer that counts to people is gay upsetting to you and wrong of me? Or is it alright to go let’s not erase canon attraction and let this guy still be into men.

Or even to realize I’m talking about text and meta stuff and go “oh it’s not playing silly right now like it sometimes does” and then just ignore me? I talk about bi repressed Bj sometimes, but you guys make it really hard to keep doing it because the community is making me sick. My issue isn’t queer readings or smashing characters together like dolls to kiss, it’s going “no I am serious and correct about this stuff and will harass people over not erasing 50% of the originals themes motifs and meanings to further support this idea they already might believe in five specific spots.” That’s the issue. That’s my problem. It’s embarrassing to be around that and say I agree with anything those people say. It’s hard to look for content knowing half of it will be out of character on PURPOSE.

he scrolls in silence for a good 10 minutes. then asks himself, “do i really look like i monologue in my head before i pass?” 

but then he finds one that says “if isagi had a fanfic it’d be tagged ‘obsession’ ‘manipulative behavior’ ‘this is not a love story’” and he goes, “okay, but they’re not wrong.” 

thirst tweets? he reads one that says, “i would let isagi use me like he uses spatial awareness” and drops his phone (that was tweeted by kxsagi). 

refuses to look anyone in the eye for a full 12 minutes. 

itoshi rin

the absolute worst person to find his fandom discourse. 

at first it’s fine, he sees “itoshi rin owns me” and “he could spit on me and i’d bark” and thinks you’re all mentally unstable (he’s right). 

but then. then. he hits a comment that says: “fraudtoshi rin only shows up when sae breathes near him. man folds faster than my GPA.” 

he stops breathing. who said that. he’s scrolling like he’s trying to find the IP address. 

goes into a full-on rant like, “i literally scored more goals in the NEL than– you know what, never mind. i don’t care. i don’t. i don’t even read comments.” (he absolutely reads the comments.) 

the worst part is he sees people arguing over who the hotter itoshi is. someone said “sae is sexy. rin is just cold and tall.” this man is FUMING. “i am not just tall.” 

kaiser michael

he lives for this. googles himself once a week. you can catch him reading a post that says: “kaiser looks like he’d insult you in german during sex and then ghost you after stealing your charger.” 

he chuckles and goes, “hm. they get me.” 

there’s another tweet: “kaiser plays football like the main villain in a sports anime and i’d still let him ruin my life.” 

he saves it. makes it his wallpaper. “they get it.” 

but then he sees one that says: “does ness hold it for kaiser when he pisses because he can’t aim?” 

that man screeches. pure betrayal. “WHAT? why would they say that? why would they say i can’t AIM? i am the best striker in blue lock! in the world!”

I liked Bolas at first and thought it was funny and hilarious, (and still is) but the reason I’m getting more meh about it is the weirdly disproportionate fan response. I shouldn’t be feeling bitter that when new people hear of Purgatory the only thing they take out of it was Bolas cult.

i ship jimcurly too, i think their dynamic is incredibly messed up and it fascinates me to explore it. honestly my personal ideal timeline is pre-canon jimcurly and post-canon curlya, because i like to torment curly but i also like the idea of him getting to heal from it

i don't have any other ships because i'm simply not interested, and thus i don't have a 'personal take' to share, but i respect everyone's right to ship whatever the hell they want even if i personally don't understand it or can't see myself being invested in it. i do not engage in '''shipping discourse''' and don't go out of my way to harass people over fiction. if i come across something i don't like, i block the user and move on with my day. if everything is properly tagged and thus easily avoidable, i fully believe it's on me to curate my online experience :) call me a fandom elder if you want, i just think there are better ways to spend my energy, especially when it comes to something i'm doing solely for fun

With the finale of season 2, I’m going to take a swing at the hornet’s nest. I’d like to take some time to discuss some discourse in the Joel Miller x Reader side of the fandom. Now, I wanted to stay out of it, but not only is the issue incredibly irritating, it’s also devolved into a toxic back-and-forth of miscommunication, mistagging, and anger.

I know it’s a lot to ask these days, but I’d like to address and analyze this recent discourse with a bit of critical thinking. However, there’s a bit of housekeeping I must do first. I want to make it clear that I have an opinion on the matter. I am not coming at this without bias, nor am I attempting to. That being said, I am not judging anyone in this fandom space for their opinions or kinks. To each their own. This is not coming from a place of pearl-clutching purity culture bs – in fact, I’m a proponent of making fandom weird again and don’t like, don’t read. I am also aware that a majority of one side will probably not see this post, as I’ve blocked a lot of people in this fandom over the years. I am simply a fan who wishes to have a mature conversation about this interesting, and complex, piece of discourse. This is also not coming from a place of behavior-policing. You can write what you want, and I will block accordingly.

So, what was the discourse to begin with?

The core of it is quite simple. One side is fans who want less dramatic age gaps, more reader inserts in their 30s+, and less DBF/daddy kink fics. The other side became angry of these complaints and are demanding people ignore these fics. This discourse originated in the PPCU fandom* and was not specific to the Last of Us fandom**, which leads me to believe this problem is purely due to the nature of Joel Miller being played by Pedro Pascal and not an inherent aspect of the Last of Us fandom. Now, I’ll get into the analysis of these arguments in a moment, but first, I’d like to go over some numbers.

To start, I analyzed everything posted from May 1st to May 21st in the Joel Miller x Reader tag. I recorded the type of post (whether it was a fanfiction, a picture, a video, a rec, or a general post), the date, and whether it fit a certain set of categories. The categories were classified by whether it contained the following: age gap (and what that age gap was), DBF (or other related kinks), daddy kink, incest or step dad kink, dark fic, or what I classified as “old man kink” (basically anything that sexualized old men and labeled old man!Joel specifically).

I want to make it clear, I’m purely looking at the amount posted not how popular these fics are. As much as I would’ve liked to analyze both, I am one person with a busy life, and my hypotheses didn’t focus so much on popularity as frequency.

So, what was the data?

There were 1093 total posts within the 21-day span, 678 of which were fanfictions. For reference, there were 309 general posts, 69 pictures, 19 rec posts, and 18 videos. Of the 678 fanfictions, approximately 641 were Joel Miller x Reader fics. 289 met none of the categories and 349 met the categories. Per day, there was an average of 16 fics posted that met the categories verses an average of 13 fics posted that didn’t.

Let’s focus on the categories, namely, what’s the breakdown?

Age Gap: 154

DBF: 80

Dark Fics: 48

Daddy Kink: 31

Old Man Kink: 17

Implied Age Gap: 7

Incest: 7

Step Dad Kink: 2

BFD: 2

HBF: 1

The age gap ranges in these fics, where expressly stated, were the following:

20s to 50s: 16

20s to 60s: 8

20s to 40s: 6

30s to 50s: 6

30s to 60s: 6

Late 20s to 50s: 5

Late 20s to 40s: 4

Late 20s to 60s: 4

20s to 30s: 2

There were approximately 88 unspecified age gap fics.

Now, I don’t pretend to be a wis with numbers, but I am an academic with enough know-how to analyze data. My numbers may be slightly off, but they are approximately accurate.

What can we conclude from these numbers and how does it inform this discourse?

The categories represent certain kinks and tropes that in mainstream fandoms are relatively niche. Certain kinks and tropes can be more common in some fandoms than others, for example, pseudoincest is common in the Umbrella Academy fandom. However, up until recently, these specific kinks/tropes were not as common in the Last of Us fandom. I didn’t get the numbers on this, but some of you might recall that before season 2, these kinks/tropes were not a common occurrence.

Now though? Over the 21 days I looked at, there were more fanfictions posted that fit into these categories than didn’t. Not only that, these fanfictions were posted with slightly more frequency on average per day. It’s easy to see why some fans feel these kinks/tropes are overdone and annoying, even people who enjoy these tropes. I’d argue the amount and frequency of these fics has caused a bit of fatigue.

Given the nature of Joel’s character, it is also easy to see why these tropes/kinks make people uncomfortable. A large and distinctive part of Joel’s character is his relationships with his daughters and how he pseudo adopts any young woman comes across. This is evident with Sarah and Ellie, but also with Dina (S2E1-2) and Abby (S2E2). Being a father defines Joel’s character. He attempted suicide because he is a father who lost his daughter and couldn’t live without her. He kills an entire hospital of people because he is a father, because Ellie became his daughter and he loves her just as he loves Sarah. His death was due to his actions protecting his daughter, and arguably because he saved Abby from the horde, because she’s close to Ellie’s age.

As I mentioned before, certain kinks and tropes can be more common in some fandoms than others. The themes in their source materials often determine what kinks and tropes develop in fandoms. They determine what kinks might be considered niche in the space. For example, pseudoincest is not considered niche in the Umbrella Academy fandom. In the case of Joel Miller, as previously discussed, the themes do not really lend themselves to DBF, daddy kink, and age gaps. The Last of Us has a focus on familial relationships, not romantic relationships. X Reader tends to lean heavily into romantic relationships, and so it is not surprising that Joel Miller x Reader is popular. However, what is surprising is how common these kinks have become even though the themes of the story do no necessarily lend itself to them. On top of that, I would argue that DBF is a niche kink in the general sense, as my friend – who is into fandom and “very into freak shit” (her words) has never heard of it until we talked about it.

Now, again, I’m not kink-shaming the people who write these. I believe the majority of them are likely young and writing reader inserts close to their own age. Plus, I am a huge proponent of writing what you want, and I want to be so clear that I am not saying you can’t write these types of fics, but you can’t deny that they are completely out of character for Joel Miller and don’t fit the narrative of the story. So, I can’t help but wonder why? I think the answer lies in the fact that he’s played by Pedro Pascal. The PPCU fandom* is full of smut writers who often veer into kinky and dark areas of smut. They are not necessarily focused on characters or stories, but their attraction to Pedro Pascal. It is unsurprising this translates to Joel in such an outstanding way.

So, I guess the real question is how do we as a fandom resolve all this? In a perfect world, these fics would all be explicitly tagged and people who don’t want to see them can block the writers or tags, and both parties could live peacefully in their own fandom bubbles. But these fics aren’t properly tagged all the time, nor are they always clear in the headings. The toxic attacks from both sides only makes it worse. It’s important to remember that fandom is supposed to be fun, and its community. We don’t have to like each other, or all the fanfictions written in this fandom, but we shouldn’t be attacking each other or making this space a toxic hellhole. But, tbh, that feels like asking too much.

Haladriel and Interfandom Strife

I’ve been having an enjoyable time reading and researching about gender, race, sexuality, and neoliberal feminism in fandom in terms of both antagonism within fandom communities along with anti culture. (Because why would I do my job when I can be rattling around on journals and books dedicated to fandom studies…) Wow, has it been interesting when I think of some of these things in terms of Haladriel as well as the wider TROP community and beyond.

One of the things that struck me the most is the idea when people made up of an oppressed body cannot generate larger structural change, often the outlet becomes “horizontal violence” where anger is dispersed and “directed laterally within the oppressed group instead of at larger structural concerns” (Duffy, Miltner, Wahlstedt, 2022). Elaine Duffy conceived of and circulated this concept way back in 1995 and it’s been brought up again in recent internet scholarship focused on both anti and interfandom interactions. In many ways, this attitude and act confuses real-world activism with an individual’s relationship to neoliberal consumption and what that trio of authors modify into “digital horizontal violence.” While their primary object of study was social media and influencer culture, their main point is that cycles of misogyny rattle along right next to that violence and vitriol. Even if it’s distributed outside of male spheres the rhetoric is often piggybacking talking points from those spheres (aka “silly women interested in their romance” or “we have to protect you from yourselves”). As Duffy, Miltner, and Wahlstedt drily put it, “th[e] efficacy in dismantling gendered norms is dubious,” despite the “passion and intensity” members of internet callout groups use to critique what they see as harmful attitudes.

So do anti-Haladriels feel oppressed and lash out with digital horizontal violence? From my perspective, it’s a resounding yes. It’s easier to take out frustrations on a related group within a fandom that you feel is not doing morality right than to enact structural change against the attacks of wider lorebro LOTR circles or even larger structural issues like misogyny and capitalism itself.

The big problem with that is not only does it suck, but it very much seems as if the discourse around Haladriel has had the marked effect of chilling fandom participation within the main TROP tags and even within the Haladriel tag itself from anyone interested in that ship. This isn’t helped by vague or anonymous posts reminiscent of the discourse on Twitter over the past two years or more of those ambivalent to or who dislike the ship dividing fans into camps of “bad haladriels” vs “good haladriels.” Those two arbitrary camps are still often lumped together by the refusal to outright say what is meant or who is meant – possibly at the risk of sounding mean or antagonistic.

There’s way more to say when it comes to the underlying problems with queer erasure in terms of kink where those inside and outside TROP fandom are not able to imagine or intuit that a het pairing like Haladriel can function as kink for members of the queer community in just as valid a way as slash preferences within het communities (Morrissey, 2014). And don’t get me started on the concept of generational cringe culture that also doesn’t accomplish change and just buys into ageist assumptions of being able to have distinct generational age ranges that inherently and constantly improve on the previous generation (because it’s no secret that a lot of antis are puritanical in their view on sex and romance if you take a look on social media platforms and even on AO3).

Them’s my thoughts on recent readings. It really hammers home how older ideas of “don’t like don’t read,” “Your kink is not my kink and that’s okay,” or – if you’re into blocking habits which I’m not unless someone is actively screaming epithets at me – to curate space however you want or can. There’s also a concept of “Calling In” rather than “Calling Out” that I’ve just started to dig into (Ross, 2020) that suggests working through trauma together rather than attacking other interfandom groups is the way to go. Because do Haladriel fans engage in the same kind of digital horizontal violence when they feel oppressed? Sure! But it’s going to be a long, long hiatus without some kind of self-awareness on what can happen between all of us, and scholarship helps me make sense of fandom and sometimes the wider world.

Anyway, none of us are perfect, and god knows I’ve misstepped in fandom dealings before, but I love this space and my ship and my show. …And at some point I’ll get back to Sticks of Power and purposeful positivity posts. I vow it lol.

all of my stories are written in limited point of view. you are reading from inside the character’s head—their thoughts, their feelings, their assumptions. that means unreliable narration. they will misinterpret things, make flawed judgments, and romanticize behaviors they shouldn’t. that is on purpose. you are expected to separate character perspective from authorial intent.

So you just come to a post clearly meant to bash Elain. It’s mentioned right there, at the very top, the first three words, it’s Elain hate. You still stick around. And you jump straight to Tamlin hating like that’s the lifeline to save you. You even ignored the comments where many discuss what’s wrong with her character.

“No point arguing” Babygirl, we both know you walked into a party uninvited just to ruin someone’s day. If you didn’t want to argue, you would have yapped into your corner of the fandom instead of cramming up my comment section. You had nothing decent to defend Elain because there is nothing there to defend. So stop pretending to take the high road, there is no road.

If you had a friend in her twenties, doesn’t contribute in your relationship, has done nothing—I mean absolutely nothing—for you, would you see her as a good, kind person? Elain is worse than that as everyone has to risk their lives for her too.

Just like you who likes to call yourself a “stan” of something that isn’t even there, Elain is piggybacking off a potential that doesn’t exist. You wanna know how? She is Feyre and Nesta’s sister. She is Lucien’s mate. She is Azriel’s potential love interest. Because she is written by a fame monger who wouldn’t stop making money off your backs. That’s the only assurance you have that there will be an Elain book, because plot wise there is not even a guarantee that she is of worth. Everything you believe so high and mighty of hers to be “stanned” about exists only in the minds of you “stans”.

You guys are walking proof that some things don’t deserve a name as it only gives it too much power.

I don’t hate Elain because of any man or for any man. I hate her for her. Because she is a dense, pathetic, selfish waste of space who has never cared about anyone but herself. She never learnt to cook when the family needed and now that they are rolling in riches and all her comforts are met, she is now mother teresa feeding an army. She never lifted a finger ever in her life and always slid back into the shadows when her sisters needed her, but now they are the ones making her invisible. But the moment they get their wealth, she scored a man right away to fuck out of the family. And literally everything after this is just a reiteration of these points but of course, it’s hard to tell if you’ll understand them given you intentionally misread the first post.

So what is rotting in that skull of yours? Next time you accuse me of something, make sure it has some validity.

Why the Arcane fandom sucks, an essay.

There is no way to enjoy anything in this fandom I feel, and frankly as someone who isn’t a shipper in any fandom I find it suffocating that the jayvik discourse snuffs everything else out. I also find it disgusting how everyone bullies the non-shippers or OC shippers/self shippers in this fandom I’ve notice. I have also noticed a fair bit of misogyny as well, whether it’s from people who are against Mel and Jayce or Sky and Viktor, or people invading the Jayce x reader and Viktor x reader (especially the fem!reader) tags with jayvik ship material. It’s exhausting if I’m honest. I also hate how the fandom uses any shred of media interviews to basically “go see see look you’re wrong,” to anyone who just wants to enjoy the original media in the way they want to and share it with others. Regarding the post production statements from cast and crew, my personal opinion is that they often try to give relatively (key word relatively) open ended statements while also giving the statement that would be most popular. You forget these people are PR trained. Now I think it’s perfectly fine if the cast and crew think it should be one way or another and I believe it’s still left just open ended enough for everyone to enjoy things how they want. I think I just get frustrated that people are a bit too stupid to see that people will always give the most PR popular answer (except the main writer apparently who I love how his statement is always like yeahhhhh anyways shut up, but everyone else’s statements are law? Idk kinda weird.)

I just think I’m very disappointed that my favorite show is slowly becoming something I hate because of the fanbase and I feel like I and other women are not allowed to enjoy it or our comfort characters unless they shut up and agree. And honestly I am disappointed that people on either side demand answers or for things to be official rather than letting everyone be happy. It’s called headcanon for a reason.

As someone who is ND and has hyper fixations it is hard to cope with this and it’s frankly frustrating and sort of embarrassing I get in such a tizzy that I feel like I can’t just go on IG or even Pinterest and enjoy just Viktor art without it behind shipping art. And I think it’s also ridiculous that I feel like I have to explain that no, it’s not me hating two men being shipped, frankly I think some of the art is adorable, is the fact I’ll put not interested in IG and I’ll get 20 more posts, or on posts that are like Sky x Viktor there will always be some jayvik shipper screeching there. At the end of the day it’s just annoying that no one is allowed to enjoy the same show we all love in a different way and are practically forced out of the internet spaces. I don’t even go on IG anymore because it was making me sort of upset, and tumblr is on thin ice but at least I can filter tags here. (But sometimes I would like a cheeky poly fic so I don’t really filter HAHA.) What I mean to say is that the rabid shippers are pushing BNHA levels, and what I mean by that is how feral they are and if you disagree they double down and sort of terrorize the rest of the fandom which frankly I don’t think is that small of a sect. (Those the disgusting and problematic stuff is not remotely on the same scale. The worst is misogyny and at times racism.)

Fandom and specifically fanfic has always been very fem coded in my experience and it makes me feel queasy that the fanbase for my favorite show actively seems to hate women. For example there was something on tiktok or IG about an artist drawing a racist depiction of Cait and then vitkor beautifully, or the fact shippers are racist towards Mel and Sky. I see SQUAT about time bomb or CaitVi, hell even Vander and Silco! I guess the crux of it is, a little diversity would be nice, character analyses that don’t revolve around sexuality or shipping, theory’s or expansions upon characters that sort of got back burnered like Sky or other councilors or more about the sort of rebellion and why Silco and Vander had a falling out. Writing critique on the show even considering that second season was so rushed imo!

Just let the women be in the fanbase bro. I don’t care that y’all are shipping two men, great, so you shouldn’t care what I and other women are doing too! You should be like cool we love the same show!

I am curious how women/fems/or just anyone burnt out from fandom and shipping feels and copes with this. Saying cope feels sort of cringe and like it’s causing me a mental breakdown, it’s more so the “bro please let me enjoy my favorite thing too,” feeling. We should make our own community with in the fandom so we can enjoy things as well with other people too. It’s okay and it makes me want to finally share my own writings I just don’t know where to start since I’ve been a lurker for 10+ years.

I read so many wonderful, hot, gut-wrenching, unforgettable, inspiring Pedro Pascal character fanfics... and I haven't been reblogging them 🫣 (it's me, hi, I'm the problem it's me). Don't hate me please - reblogging gives me so much anxiety, and I'm not even sure I could articulate why if I tried - and I see a lot of the discussion/discourse/posts re: reblogging and I truly understand all perspectives although it just seems to elevate my nerves about even more.

Hey! Yes I do occasionally watch Bad’s streams but not all the time because it’s not always for me. I do try to keep up with his lore when I can because q!bad can be very interesting.

I’m going to try to explain what I meant here because I do think very long term and in detail so this is just kinda my thoughts to show what I am thinking. So you can understand where I’m coming from, because this type of situation has happened a few times this is just a time that really stuck out to me because it was about foolish to etoiles.

I do try to take his references as him confusing the two people because I understand what he’s trying to do with his character. But it does become very irking when he does somewhat compare the two in front of or to other q!characters because they don’t understand where he’s coming from and it’s only really him who would know that they are two different people. Especially since he’s not as open about him being a demon and there was some of these situations before the memories confusion.

Because he’s done this more to q!foolish than anyone else it can put q!foolish in a pinch especially since cc!foolish has stated he doesn’t know where he wants to take his character’s past(like if he’s immortal or a god or just a regular hybrid person). Which from a role player stance can make the person freeze and have to agree or deny to something that they haven’t completely thought about because someone else has stated it to be true.

So say if q!etoiles asked q!foolish if he knew q!bad before the island, he would have to agree or deny something that would support or conflict with what q!bad has stated. Which can somewhat taint or even ruin future rp plans for someone like foolish, who’s character is very easy going and constantly lives in the moment. Now he would have to think about past relationships and how his character would deal with all of that. This can kinda ruin it for foolish because q!foolish doesn’t really remember or care for what was before the island, which allows him to make his character carefree in the sense that his actions are just affecting the people as he knows them to be in present.

I do understand he’s trying to write the backstory between them but parts of it should kinda be kept between himself and Foolish. So as to not ruin any rp or lore foolish may want to do because q!bads info conflicts with his.

Again this is just my thought process so you can tell where I’m coming from. Feel free to agree or disagree. I’m not usually on twitter so I don’t really know how they would think about this. Also no hate to you either, thank you for adding that clarification to anyone who wouldn’t otherwise know that.

I really really don’t like that cc!bad is making q!bad comment on q!Foolish being really old or having met him in the past. Like q!foolish hasn’t even really commented on his past and cc!foolish has said he’s not sure what direction he wants to take his characters past yet.

Yeah we can headcannon it and talk about it but I’m not taking what bad says as serious because that’s not his right. He can’t just drop lore about someone else when it could possibly not even be true, like really it’s not your character rp.
