The moment you think scammers can't get any more intrusive is the moment you open the work email to see a "book inquiry" full of a spam email. They made an account on a reputable website, and then are 'inquiring' after books and using the service to spread their filth. What the fuck. What the fuck. I need to kill Amazon for their entire business, but I need to kill Alibris' current bout of spammers. I need to strangle them with my bare hands. Theres not enough rage in the world for me to throw at them. What the Fuck you guys.
#ohp its me again#bookselling#bookseller#independent bookstore#independent seller#alibris#GUYS IF YOU SELL ON ALIBRIS REPORT EVERY ONE OF THOSE FUCKERS THAT COMES IN. CONTACT ALIBRIS DIRECTLY AND GET THEM BANNED#THIS IS SO FUCKED IM GONMA SCREAM

darling girl where did u buy "blaming the victims"?
I bought a new copy from the b&n I usually study at!! I would’ve been happy to buy it used from an indie bookstore, but I actually wanted it brand new so that I could annotate it. I know it’s also available at Target, online for a lower price on Alibris, or at used bookstores near you if you wanna buy it secondhand. I’ve already verified that none of these brands are on the BDS list btw.
Taking this opportunity to plug the No Thanks app, bc I’ve been routinely using it to check whether a brand is on the boycott list (and it hasn’t missed so far). Be ethical w ur consumerism <3
#I bought my med chem textbook from Alibris for maybe 20 dollars when it usually retails for like 300#and it came in great quality so honestly would recommend Alibris any day#ask

Bookshop.org is also out there and pretty great. As a former bookseller (16 years in the trade), I'm a big fan of Alibris, and I'm still a bit pissed about abebooks being swallowed by Amazon and turning to shit. If you want the absolute lowest price for used books (or to figure out how to price things for sale), I recommend bookfinder.com, which allows you to get into the nitty gritty with a lot of little search functions, though you can also just whack in an author or title and see what pops up. It does offer links for things like Amazon, Ebay, and Abebooks, but it also gives you thriftbooks and alibris links.
use, and i cannot stress this enough, thriftbooks

To everyone in red states where book bans are likely to take place soon, here’s some lists for you <3

alibris.com is an alternative to thriftbooks that compares books' prices across multiple websites (ebay, thriftbooks, others) and in all my years of using it it has almost always had the cheapest prices on books. there was just one instance where ebay itself had a better deal. you have to compare the prices with the shipping in mind but it's a really reliable site!!

👏🏾Education 👏🏾is 👏🏾a 👏🏾right,👏🏾 not👏🏾 a👏🏾 service 👏🏾
Pass along and use the shit out of them
#i love alibris sm#also you'll find books that ship from thriftbooks ON alibris for cheaper than thriftbooks itself#not sure how that happens but it does#ive gotten like 6 i think where i bought from alibris but the packaging is thriftbooks so i can only assume#if you're buying a Lot of thriftbooks' cheapest titles then thriftbooks will probably be cheaper bc they do free shipping past a certain#spending threshold#i think it's like $25?#but on an individual basis usually alibris is the better deal

where do you find literature about indigenous groups in america? i'm trying to learn about my taino ancestry, but i don't know where to start. i have a book containing artifacts from puerto rico and managed to find a site by the Jatibonicu Tainos in pr, but im thirsting for more knowledge that isn't written by a bot or whatever.
this is the site in question btw. very early web 2.0 but it's a good starting point for me, and just in case you're interested. https://www.taino-tribe.org/
I'm not Taino so I don't know if this will work for you. Basically I started on this website:
https://www.native-languages.org/
and I bought a couple books they recommended from the used book market Alibris (a top tier website.) Unfortunately I haven't been able to afford most of what I want to read. Within those books were references to other published writers. I've barely scratched the surface of anything so I'm not an expert by any means.
The earliest sources are written by racists but they were the least racist people of their time period so it's often very depressing. They'll describe these beautiful utopian societies and then just call everyone retarded animals for no reason. I think lots of white people still feel this way and don't say it out loud, judging by how many "friends" I have to quit speaking to.

Bought this used copy of Guards! Guards! (thanks, Seattle Good Will and alibris!) and there is just one page with annotations, in the same color pen as the previous owner's name on the front cover.
I cannot figure out what this was intended to point out or emphasize.

Lim! It’s me! I request 8 please 🥺
So, umm, I got a little carried away?
There'd been a shelf of cookbooks in the condo, before it burned down. Cookbooks that Carlos had bought when he was in college and experimenting with learning how to make Indian food and Thai food and pasta from scratch, books he'd bought at school fundraisers and church Christmas markets, books he'd been given as housewarming presents when he moved into the condo.
When he moved into the loft he realized that Carlos had never replaced them, and even though Carlos hadn't left a space for them in the kitchen, he felt like he could see it anyway, where they would have sat.
He goes on a quest after that. Some of them are easy to replace from alibris or bookfinder: the 1964 edition of the Joy of Cooking - because apparently the new edition had fucked around with all the recipes, Carlos's words, not his, and he'd stared at Carlos shocked when he'd said it because Carlos doesn't swear all that often unless he's in bed; a soup cookbook from some celebrity chef from the 90s that he's seen Carlos make exactly two recipes out of; a copy of the Silver Palate cookbook that someone at work had given him at a holiday gift exchange.
The church cookbooks and Junior League cookbooks are harder to find, and he takes to scouring second hand bookstores and antique stores and thrift shops on his days off when Carlos is at work. Sometimes he drags Nancy or Marjan or Paul with him.
"Why are we doing this?" Nancy grouses once. "I've never seen Carlos use a recipe for anything."
"That's not the point," he snaps, and Nancy backs off with sympathetic eyes.
And, it isn't. The point is that this is something Carlos had lost that he could maybe give back. He's never going to be able to replace the pie bird that Carlos bought at the farmer's market when he was 12, or the old wooden rolling pin that had been his abuela's, worn smooth with time and use, or the butter molds his cousin Anna had brought him back from a trip to France. But this, is something he can do.
It takes longer than he expects, and he ends up with more books than had been in Carlos's collection originally. But he hadn't been able to resist them, the ones with cheery titles like "Nightingales in the Kitchen" and "Charlottesville: Cooking for Compliments", or the ones filled with someone else's handwritten edits that say things like 'never make this again' or 'add orange juice' or 'your husband will thank you'.
He meant to wait for Carlos's birthday, but he gets impatient, and packs them all in a banker's box and sticks a huge red bow on it, and makes brisket for dinner. Carlos sniffs appreciatively when he comes home, and doesn't even notice the box on the table until he's coming back from hanging up his coat.
Carlos looks at him, clearly trying to remember if he's forgotten something, and he shakes his head. "No reason, baby, just because."
"It's not a lizard is it?"
He snorts. "I wouldn't do that to you, I promise. You'll like this."
Carlos lifts the books out slowly, turning them over in his hand, stacking them up on the table. He finally looks at TK. 'I had these at the condo." He nods. "You bought them for me?" He nods again, worrying his lip a little, suddenly nervous. "Why?"
"You kept them, they meant something to you, they had memories for you. I hate that you lost everything." He waves a hand when Carlos starts to deny it, or point out that TK did too. "I know, I was there too, I lost things too. But, I'd only just moved in, I still had stuff at Dad's. That was a home you built, and you lost it, and we don't talk about it." He shifts on his feet, fidgeting with the couch cushion. "We don't have to talk about it now, just, I wanted you to have something back." He gestures around the loft. "You give me so much. You deserve to have everything too."
Carlos kneels up on the couch, wrapping arms around him, kissing him breathless. He smiles into the kiss. "You like them then?"
"I love them." Carlos kisses him again. "I love you." And then he pulls back to look speculatively at the kitchen. "We'll have to rearrange some of the cups to make space for them."

Where to buy raws and manga
Updated: With the anime coming (MON) October 7, 2024 and Volume 8 being released in English September 2024, and Volume 9 coming April 2025, we are reaching the end of canon content. Please support the mangaka if you are able by purchasing physicals and voicing your support for the work where you can.
How do I support something when I can't even get it?
It can take a little work. Ask your local bookstore to stock Yakuza Fiance: Raise Wa Tanin Ga Ii, special order the manga where possible (bookstores pay attention to enthusiastic fans who place special orders), put in requests on websites, reach out to your local manga publishing companies.
Hi fellow Raise fans! Thank you for the follows and reblogs. Can't say enough how much we appreciate knowing our work, however imperfect, is appreciated. We will keep doing our best!
While you wait for the next update, and if you can afford to do so, we hope you'll consider purchasing the raws or physicals of the manga. It's so good that it's worth owning, we think, and if you can afford it you won't regret it!
With that in mind, we have some resources for you.
Please note: These are not affiliate links and clicking on them does not benefit us in anyway. This is for you in case you are inclined or are able to buy this fantastic manga!
Physicals
Please note:
Volumes 1-8 are now available for purchase
Volume 9 April 2025
Earlier volumes are often discounted up to 25%. Click bolded text to be taken directly to RWTGI book pages or other helpful information as noted.
Barnes & Noble Amazon Seven Seas Publishing (the license owner) Penguin Random House Pika Edition (French)
Note: We know RWTGI is also licensed in Spanish and Korean among other languages but we do not know the publishing houses. If you do, please comment and if not please be patient while we update.
Kinokuniya is a Japanese bookseller with locations in 12 countries (includes the UK, southeast Asia, Australia, and the US). They carry Japanese and licensed English volumes. Pre-orders can sometimes come with a premium like an art sketch. Click for locations worldwide. They ship!
Secondhand volumes are available on Walmart's site, Thriftbooks, and Alibris. They are also available from various eBay sellers.
While you're at it, consider getting a copy of Konishi's first work, Haru no Noroi (or Haru's Curse) It's a great story and a heartstring-tugging read.
Digital
For Japanese: Click on the bold underlined text links and enable your browser to translate. If you are using Chrome there is a free translation extension in the Microsoft store.
For a monthly manga subscription: Kodansha Afternoon has a really nice monthly magazine which includes Raise and other manga.
For single chapters: Kodansha has the COMIC DAYS site. New members get 100 coins to start-- each chapter is between 60 and 80 coins. Chapter 1 is free and more recent chapters are free for a short time a few months after their release.
For ENG (US only):
For single chapters: Kodansha's app K MANGA. One of our friends on the RWTGI fandom Discord tested it and you can get the first 9 chapters for free, another 3 for free around 13-14, and every month or so they unlock another chapter. For $1 you get 99 tickets to 'rent' a chapter (like you own it but you can only read it on the app, isn't Digital Rights Management fun?), you can also 'earn' tickets each time you log in, and currently they have a promotion going.
Unfortunately this is only available to US residents as of this writing. If you have Twitter, give Kodansha a shout and let them know what complete bollocks/bullshit this is: KMANGA_KODANSHA
Here's where we cover our asses!
Don't repost our work, don't retranslate it, don't make us another casualty of copyright law. Kakao and other publishers are currently cracking down on 'M' scanlator sites and doxing site admins.
So please: Be chill so we can just enjoy this thing together. Thanks!
Happy shopping and thanks for your support! 💞

Merry Christmas from J.W. Worsham and family! We wish each of you a Merry Christmas. When looking for a local Mississippi author, we would love to share this Brothers Divided with you. It is available online at Walmart, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iTunes Better World Books, Book Depository, Alibris, Books a Million, and it's downloadable for Kindle, Nook, and iBooks. Order your copy today. Thank you for your support. MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Jon and Jake grew up in a small town in Mississippi where everyone knows everyone. Most everyone in the town went to church on Sunday mornings while they were growing up. When the brothers got older and left town, things in the small town began to change. Jon got married and moved back to the small town with his wife and young son. He came back to help out on the family farm. He was enjoying life with his family. Jake made it big in Las Vegas by working as a casino floor manager. He was living the high life. One day, his boss offered him the chance of a lifetime, but he would have to move back to the small town. This move could be more costly than Jake ever imagined.
