In hindsight, I'm not certain that reply did anything to answer the "how harsh" and "what kind of threats" questions- I think I mostly just gushed about world building.
The actual answer to that is pretty mundane: terrain is temperate, aliens are just as hungry for cats as coyotes and hawks are, and sometimes it rains.
Ultimately the shape of the threats might change but its largely the same sort of threats that a clan would face on earth... mostly!
There is a big exception but that's for much much later in the story

Sephiroth is making my brain FIZZ this is so fun.
First of all, his voice actor in advent children???
Tumblr media
The new remake one is excellent but just doesn't capture that same level of terrifying cultured menace. The smug evenness and it's DEEP wow yeah. So smooth. High key petrifying I don't know who he is but he did an outstanding job. That bit where he asks cloud to 'give him the pleasure of taking it away?' like the way his voice lilted up in casual question like good GRIEF that was hot.
Anyway I have another hc: sephiroth would have made an EXCELLENT scientist like his parents, he's certainly got the intellect and hunger for knowledge, not to mention his ability to do research for days on end XD. Supernova actually using astrophysics equations is absolutely fantastic and makes me think that's what he'd major in.
By that logic, he'd want to be in rocket town with the rocket, and he'd most definitely want to go to space himself if it was the last thing he did (ha).
Do you think he'd tie his hair back like his mum?
Anyway I imagine if he hadn't been a soldier and instead been free to choose his own path he'd have been right there the whole time being a child genius and getting into fights with cid about who gets to be the pilot (Co pilots. Co pilots is how it's supposed to work with normal planes never mind things that breach the atmosphere).
Like I understand the amount of redemption/fix it fics that have him be a merc with cloud or whatever but I feel we're ignoring the possibilities stemming from the fact this man canonically knows modern astrophysics and that is absolutely not something you can inherit via way of ancient inhuman semi deceased life form.

I'm gonna be honest, for the self-proclaimed weird neurodivergent website, some of you are just mean about people with social anxiety or autistic people who can't read tone or pick up on social cues. When they have the "bad at social skills" disorder.

the issue with AI chatbots is that they should NEVER be your first choice if you are building something to handle easily automated forms.... consider an algorithmic "choose your own adventure" style chatbot first
it really seems to me that the air canada chatbot was intended to be smth that could automatically handle customer service issues but honestly... if you do not need any sort of "human touch" then i would recommend a "fancier google form"... like a more advanced flowchart of issues. If you NEED AI to be part of your chatbot I would incorporate it as part of the input parsing - you should not be using it to generate new information!

It's only harassment when they don't get their way. Butthurt baby baww brigade continues to kick and scream and throw toddler tantrums because they can't sweep me under the rug and silence me with their fascism.
I believe this quote from Mulan said it best

ed zitron, a tech beat reporter, wrote an article about a recent paper that came out from goldman-sachs calling AI, in nicer terms, a grift. it is a really interesting article; hearing criticism from people who are not ignorant of the tech and have no reason to mince words is refreshing. it also brings up points and asks the right questions:
if AI is going to be a trillion dollar investment, what trillion dollar problem is it solving?
what does it mean when people say that AI will "get better"? what does that look like and how would it even be achieved? the article makes a point to debunk talking points about how all tech is misunderstood at first by pointing out that the tech it gets compared to the most, the internet and smartphones, were both created over the course of decades with roadmaps and clear goals. AI does not have this.
the american power grid straight up cannot handle the load required to run AI because it has not been meaningfully developed in decades. how are they going to overcome this hurdle (they aren't)?
people who are losing their jobs to this tech aren't being "replaced". they're just getting a taste of how little their managers care about their craft and how little they think of their consumer base. ai is not capable of replacing humans and there's no indication they ever will because...
all of these models use the same training data so now they're all giving the same wrong answers in the same voice. without massive and i mean EXPONENTIALLY MASSIVE troves of data to work with, they are pretty much as a standstill for any innovation they're imagining in their heads

AI/automation/removing humans from human spaces and jobs post
This post is brought to you by my-mom's-car-broke-down-today-in-the-middle-of-the-road. Thankfully we were still in the neighborhood and not a lot of heavy traffic today. I walked back to my house to grab my car to pick her up so we could still run errands - and when I tell you my mother started a phone call, I walked back to my house, got my car, pulled up and parked ahead of my mom, unloaded her trunk (returns) loaded mine, and sat in her car again and she was S T I L L battling the automated system.
Just to report that she was stranded in the middle of the road. Not even asking for help yet, just giving her name and location and it asked her at least Twice about her city location and twice responded: "...sorry, I didn't get that. What is the name of your city?" My mom is one of the most clearly-spoken people I know: no accent, she was remaining very calm so her words weren't running together, no background noise. And for multiple questions it asked her to repeat information and then Gave Up and sent her to a real person finally anyway.
When I worked at a credit union, that was actually our strategy to get to a person faster. Be as unintelligible and unhelpful to the automation as possible. Run through all of its menu and still need help so it would connect you with another employee. I timed it a few times - between using the automated system and sticking it out for a person - the automated system consistently took 20-35 minutes and it would Still punt us over to a person in the end even though the system claimed to be able to do what we were needing. Yeah, we had to wait for a person, but like...for 7 minutes usually. Which also sucks to wait 7 minutes, especially when there's a line, but I would rather wait for 7 minutes than 35!
All I'm saying is I don't know that AI/automated systems like this are actually particularly helpful. They take you to a person eventually anyway - they almost never hear you right and throw in additional questions when you just want to solve one thing: "would you like to update your phone number?" No! I do not! I'm barely trusting you to connect this call to another live person as is! It wastes time - which gives you grumpy customers (low stakes), or leaves you stranded in the middle of the road with no way to shift gears and push it to the side (higher stakes). Mostly thank goodness it happened in the neighborhood today and not yesterday when my mom was on a college boulevard with six lanes of traffic.
I know people are looking for jobs. Well how about this for a great way to create some? AI/automation is not making this faster or easier and isn't that the whole point? I remember my professors were so excited initially because it would help process raw numerical data so much faster, but this thing has broken containment and is doing things it is not good at and ruining the world while it does.
Oh, and probably a lot of people's cholesterol.

should you delete twitter and get bluesky? (or just get a bluesky in general)? here's what i've found:
yes. my answer was no before bc the former CEO of twitter who also sucked, jack dorsey, was on the board, but he left as of may 2024, and things have gotten a lot better. also a lot of japanese and korean artists have joined
don't delete your twitter. lock your account, use a service to delete all your tweets, delete the app off of your phone, and keep your account/handle so you can't be impersonated.
get a bluesky with the same handle, even if you won't use it, also so you won't be impersonated.
get the sky follower bridge extension for chrome or firefox. you can find everyone you follow on twitter AND everyone you blocked so you don't have to start fresh: https://skyfollowerbridge.com/
learn how to use its moderation tools (labelers, block lists, NSFW settings) so you can immediately cut out the grifters, fascists, t*rfs, AI freaks, have the NSFW content you want to see if you so choose, and moderate for triggers. here's a helpful thread with a lot of tools.
the bluesky phone app is pretty good, but there is also tweetdeck for bluesky, called https://deck.blue/ on desktop, if you miss tweetdeck.
bluesky has explicitly stated they do not use your data to train generative AI, which is nice to hear from an up and coming startup. obviously we can’t trust these companies and please use nightshade and glaze, but it’s good to hear.
