It's pretty well-known that the Z movies aped the hell out of the original story arcs.. Pretty much every Z movie is Playing The Hits, remixing story elements from existing Dragon Ball arcs into an "original" Frankenstein's Monster of derivative material.

Lord Slug is the most on-the-nose it ever gets, in the sense that this guy is Piccolo.

Like. It's so on-the-nose, Kaio even says multiple times "He's JUST LIKE PICCOLO!"

It's amazing how shameless this is. They aren't even pretending this is an Original Character Do Not Steal, the way they do with most of the other movie villains. He's just Piccolo Again. We made Piccolo Again. Do you want to see Goku fight Piccolo Again?

So. What's his deal, exactly?

Slug has a birth defect where he's evil.

He just. He was born evil. I don't know what to tell ya. On rare occasions, Namekians will be born pure evil. And not just any evil, but Mazoku evil.

There are a number of words in Japanese that mean demon, spirit, wicked thing, etc. Most of them are derived from the word 'ma', which can mean demon or evil or magic or just... general occult stuff. Piccolo is the Dai-ma-o or Great Demon King. His offspring are Ma-zoku, or the Demon Clan.

Slug's followers are also Mazoku. It's never clearly explained how, exactly, Slug creates his Mazoku. I guess being made pure evil as a birth defect means he's a demon. The movie is aggressively disinterested in explaining Slug. He just. Is.

But Slug's Mazoku aren't just any kind of demon. The movie gives them a peculiar trait that Piccolo's Mazoku never had.

They're vampires.

When Slug and his forces arrive on Earth, they're initially forced to wear all of this protective gear to shield them from the purifying light of the sun. Even Slug himself, despite being more resilient than the others, is forced to remain under this giant Dracula cloak to protect him from being destroyed by it.(T

Fortunately for them, they're old-hat when it comes to terraforming. They didn't come to Earth to conquer. Though they do pay lip service to the idea that Slug is some sort of galactic monarch....

His intentions for Earth are a bit more... oddball. You see, Slug's in the market for a new car.

I think they came up with this idea as a way to distinguish him from Frieza. Because, in addition to being Piccolo, Slug is also Frieza. Frieza's a real estate mogul who kills planets to sell them at markup, so they came up with the idea that Slug's killing planets for automotive manufacturing.

Slug travels the universe in a vehicle called the Planet Cruiser, which is precisely what it sounds like: A rogue planet retrofitted into being a spaceship. The process of manufacturing a Planet Cruiser is, however, quite lethal to the inhabitants of the world.

But that's fine because hostile conditions for people are optimal for space vampires. Also they blot out the sun for obvious reasons.

And that's the plot of Lord Slug. Namekian Dracula wants to buy a car - and also happens to find Dragon Balls here to restore his youth by happenstance. His plans are thwarted when Goku and Piccolo wipe out his Mazoku forces, and when Goku remembers a cut of Dragon Ball lore so deep and obscure that I'm honestly startled by it.

During Goku's training under Kaio, he learns to form the Genki-Dama or Spirit Bomb. This is Goku's most iconic desperation move. In addition to its three canon appearances, it shows up in a lot of these movies and GT. But there's an... interesting quality to it that the manga just plum forgot about.

When Kaio teaches Goku the technique, he explains it like this:

The Genki-Dama can borrow energy from inanimate objects, the atmosphere, people, animals, trees... all kinds of things. And, with this technique, Goku could even learn to tap into the immeasurable power of the sun itself.

Toriyama seems to have forgotten he wrote that. It never comes up again. And that's weird because there is one particular situation where it should have come up again.

This was it. The time to take that gun down off the shelf and fire it was here. Toriyama's written Goku into a position where he needs to somehow form a Genki-Dama vastly more powerful than the one from Earth, on a dead planet with little to work with... orbiting three suns.

If there was ever a time for Goku to fulfill Kaio's foreshadowing and whip out a Solar Genki-Dama, it was here.

I honestly wonder if Toei swiped the idea of a Solar Genki-Dama from Toriyama. We know they tried to jump the gun on Goku becoming a Super Saiyan. That's what this is about.

This was supposed to be the Super Saiyan transformation in its entirety. Toei wanted Goku to become a Super Saiyan in the movie first, prior to it happening in the manga, but the design hadn't been finalized so the final product doesn't look quite right.

The movie's even called "Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiyan Son Goku". That's the title of the film, even though it's only in the movie for like two minutes and barely accomplishes anything before the fight moves on like this never happened.

If they'd succeeded in making this the debut appearance of the Super Saiyan it would be horribly disappointing.

Toei later did it again, when they scooped Goku and Vegeta performing the Fusion Dance out from under Toriyama, forcing him to come up with Potara to make his fusion in the manga distinctive.

So I genuinely wonder if they scooped the Solar Genki-Dama from him. Because Toei's nowhere near good enough at Dragon Ball continuity for a cut this deep. It is bafflingly original, creative, and consistent to established canon.

Nonetheless, here we are. Faced with the power of Namekian Dracula, Goku remembers this special characteristic of his technique and hits Slug with the raw vampire-destroying might of the sun.

Goku does a lot of Genki-Damas throughout these films and they tend to blur together.

But this? This is such a perfect way to kill Namekian Dracula. If this is the character you're going to make Goku face, I can think of no better way to end the fight than by punching him in the face with the goddamn sun.

new camera (Canon R6) is a colossal upgrade, to the point where the way you are meant to use it is completely different from my old mid-range DSLR. Went out to do some photography in the park and I am going to have to spend a while fidgeting with the settings so that I can switch between the useful options faster. Menuing in higher end cameras has always been a big deal and I've used high-end cameras briefly but never for long enough to see how much.

It is really nice to use a piece of equipment that is this well made. My old 600D was a "nice beginner camera" when it came out in 2011. The R6 is a professional full-frame optimized for serious work. You actually have enough dials to realistically run full manual under pressure! You have enough focus points that moving them around actually makes sense! To say absolutely nothing of the huge leaps in image processing that have happened in the decade between these two cameras.

I'm adapting my old 24-105 f/4 lens, which is even older than the 600D but optics age better than bodies, it feels great to finally use all of this lens. On APS-C it gets seriously cropped to the point where it can feel kind of awkward, on full-frame you can really see why everyone loves it so much.

I still need some time to get used to the controls, a lot of these were shot with far too slow a shutter speed because I was not quick on the ISO draw. It'll get there.

Viewers turning in for the track and field events at the Summer Games in Paris next week might just do a double-take: Instead of the usual rust-colored reddish hue, the track is purple.

The new, eye-catching color will serve as the backdrop for runners competing at the Stade de France, the country’s largest stadium, located in the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. The track is made by Mondo, a company based in Alba, Italy, that has made every track used at the Olympics since 1976.

The color was mainly an aesthetic choice, as purple, blue and green make up the palette for the competition venues at this year’s games. The design actually incorporates three separate colors: lavender for the track itself, darker purple for the service areas and gray for the exterior curves at each end.

Even the glue used to adhere the track to its asphalt base—2,800 pots in total—is purple, just in case any becomes visible.

“The big part of the job was to come up with a track that was different from what we had seen … to go a little bit outside the box,” says Alain Blondel, an Olympic decathlete who now serves as the sports manager for the Paris games, to Olympics.com’s Nicolas Kohlhuber.

This is the first time an Olympic track has been purple. But it’s not uncommon for athletics venues around the world to play around with color. For example, since 1986, Boise State University has famously eschewed the traditional green-colored turf for its football field, opting instead for a shocking shade of bright blue.

Color aside, the Paris track is unique for several other reasons. For one, it incorporates the shells of bivalve mollusks, like mussels and clams. Ahead of the games, track-maker Mondo began partnering with a mussel farming and fishing company called Nieddittas to give used shells a second life.

Staff at Nieddittas harvest, clean and prepare the shells—which are made primarily of calcium carbonate—so they can be ground into a powder that can be incorporated into the track material. The shells would have otherwise been headed to a landfill, so the process transforms waste into something useful. I have begun FF8, and am about 2 hours in. All I have done is beaten Ifrit, and immediately began what I do best: optimizing.

So okay. All I remember about this game is that it has level scaling, where enemies (maybe just bosses) scale to your level (or Squall's specifically? Unclear). You overcome this not through leveling, but by Junctioning your magic spells to stats in order to ascend to higher levels of power. As part of that, converting enemies to cards via the Card command is essential, as it negates EXP gain but keeps the AP for upgrading your summons.

So I looked at my summons, and went okay, I need to upgrade several things on Quetzalcoatl right now. Like the ability to turn things into Cards, and the ability to upgrade basic spells to mid-level spells, as well as all three summons' abilities to convert items into Fire, Ice, and Lightning/Wind spells. The end result is that now I'm grinding out basic skills and refining to T2 spells like Fira, which takes forever because you need like 500 basic spells but can only hold 100 at a time, so you draw from enemies until you hit cap then refine them, then do it again, until you have 100 of all of them.

I'm going to be honest, the remaster's 3x speed is a godsend on this. I am perhaps being overly focused on immediate optimization. There's no requirement for me to do this, after all, and those spells will undoubtedly become available later on. I also don't intend to avoid all levels by converting literally everything to cards. I'll probably do it for bosses, but mostly because those are the really good cards. We'll see if I keep it up, though. I'd like to avoid Triple Triad forever if possible.

The main issue this situation raises is one of creating a blockade to player progress. Yes, I do like having the option to overpower myself in a game. However, when the main blockade to that is one of time, it becomes frustrating, because I know I can do this and frankly, I'd want to anyway. But having only time block you if obnoxious, because now the exchange is one of real life hours.

To give an adjacent example: Atelier. I've been shilling this a lot lately, but the Atelier games, in many situations, allow you to overpower yourself in mid-game, with equipment that can carry you through the end just fine if you know how to rotate your materials and combine traits. In the Arland games, this track to becoming overpowered does take time, but mostly it takes tracking your materials and traits, and cycling them into creations that eventually land on forging materials for conversion. It's an active, cerebral process. The Dusk trilogy is a bit different, mostly requiring you to have arcane knowledge of where the good items and traits can be dug up, which is a bit frustrating but can be circumvented with persistent exploration over time. You're not meant to immediately know how to do this stuff, after all.

But then there's the Mysterious trilogy, which removed the time limit mechanics and allows free exploration, where the early overpowering set in Atelier Sophie requires...running around a zone collecting a shitzillion materials, until you reach search level 5, when you can start to find the good stuff. It's effectively the same outcome: around this point in the game you can overpower yourself if you know how. But one of these focuses on the main ingredient being innovation, one focuses on foreknowledge, and one focuses on your time. Guess which one I like the least.

There's a quote that I've heard a lot, but couldn't attribute it to whoever said it first, that goes something like "Given the option, players will optimize the fun out of the game." The general takeaway being, you have to avoid letting players optimize by constantly resetting or aiming for a perfect outcome right away. You have to incentivize playing through your failures. Because absent a real reason to...no one is going to. And I think this kind of optimizing falls in a similar category. Unless there's an internal incentive not to...I'm probably gonna do it. Especially because you don't know when it might be necessary.

That Sophie example? Yeah, shortly after that point, depending on how you progress, you run into really strong enemies that will beat your shit in without better equipment. Doing this process is tedious, but it does turn the tables from really hard, to completely manageable, in little time. FF8 is similar. The long, visceral memory I have is that this is the only Final Fantasy game I couldn't beat the first time. I didn't know enemies scaled to your level and hit 99, and I didn't consider the card game relevant, not knowing about card conversion to items conversion to spells. When you don't know it won't punish you later, the sensation is "I can put in the time now to overpower myself and have a smooth ride, or I can be forced to put in the time later while tearing my hair out." If you know that's a transition that's coming? You're probably not going to replay that game very much.

Fortunately for 8, I don't know it's going to happen, I could've just sucked at video games as a kid (I did, still do). But it feels like it will, and the speed setting at least makes this a tolerable amount of time. I can't say much about the game, but I'm having a lot of thoughts about this so now it's everyone's problem.

I remember it like it was just yesterday. Richard Mille came out absolutely nowhere delivering a watch in partnership with Ferrari that snatched the throne as the world's thinnest watch, beating out the then-recently (like four months recently) released Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra by a mere 0.05mm.

We wrote pretty extensively about the Bulgari upon its release in March 2022, especially considering it not only held the thinness record at the time, but also featured a QR code for an NFT (remember those?) on the dial. The Ferrari then came roaring in with the new record and an engineering achievement, having built the movement into the case rather than going the route Bulgari went, using the caseback as a mainplate for the movement. And so, since July 2022, RM has held the record. That changes today.

The Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra returns and is thinner than ever – literally. As of today, the new Ultra boasts a thickness of 1.7mm, beating the RM by another .05mm. And just like RM delivered its record-setting watch with a bit of flare via the architecture, here Bulgari is raising the stakes by COSC-certifying the new Ultra, thereby making it not just the thinnest watch ever made, but also the thinnest chronometer-certified watch ever made. By my count, that's two records (though I am not sure anyone was waiting on the latter).

Of course, this should come as no surprise, as the attainment of records has been core to the Octo Finissimo line since its creation and has been a key factor in its meteoric rise as a collection that now stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of AP and Patek in its class (integrated bracelet sports watches).

And no matter where you stand on the need to have these records or their importance in the larger scheme of things, you can't deny the fact that Bulgari and Octo Finissimo achieved records for the thinnest tourbillon, minute repeater, self-winding watch, self-winding tourbillon, chronograph GMT, tourbillon chronograph, and perpetual calendar.

And while they may have lost the throne for the thinnest watch, full stop, for a brief period, the brand is back on top. And can add a "COSC-certified" wristwatch" to the above list. So now we know the new Ultra is the standard by which all thin watches (and thin chronometers) are to be measured. What about the watch itself? Well first off, for a complete breakdown of the original Ultra, much of which applies to this watch, I implore you to give this story a read.

Of course, the high-level points are the titanium case and the use of the caseback as a mainplate for the movement. And that caseback needed to be made of an especially hard and dense material: tungsten carbide. One hundred and seventy components of this manually wound movement are assembled and built into the watch. On the previous Ultra, as noted above, there was a QR code on the ratchet, which has now been changed to a Datamatrix, allowing the owner to experience the full details of the Ultra through photo, video, and advanced data.

Making this a COSC-certified movement added complexity to the assembly and construction of this ultra-thin watch but the caseback, used in the previous iteration, still provided enough stability for the now thinner watch. And that's because it was not the movement or the architecture that served as the area where the new thinness was achieved.

No, that would be the sapphire crystal. According to Bulgari the case was reworked to "optimize" the crystal. A careful meticulous process allows the engineers to do away with one-tenth of a millimeter necessary to achieve the record.

But it gets more interesting still, as Bulgari has made it even easier to set this piece. You quite literally place it in a dedicated case with a digital readout. Bulgari describes it as having a dedicated watchmaker at home, noting in its press release that once the watch is in the case, "the desired time is then programmed, and the adjustment cycle launched at the touch of a button. In a matter of seconds, the watch is perfectly adjusted and wound with impeccable precision." That is pretty damn cool.

This new record-breaker will be in a set of 20 pieces and will cost $529,000. In addition, Bulgari is also releasing an Octo Finissimo Ultra in platinum. It boasts the same 1.80mm thickness as the previous Ultra, which is now also a record for a platinum watch. No small deal for sure. One thing is certain, Bulgari has not lost its competitive edge and we'll have to wait and see which records are still left to beat.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s government on Thursday ordered the local United Nations office on human rights to suspend operations and gave its staff 72 hours to leave, accusing it of assisting coup plotters and terrorist groups.

Foreign Affairs Minister Yván Gil announced the decision at a news conference in Caracas, which came amid heightened concerns that the government is repressing real or perceived opponents in an election year. Nearly a week ago, Venezuela detained a prominent human rights attorney and members of her family, setting off a wave of criticism inside and outside the country.

Gil said the local technical advisory office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, authorized in 2019, was supposed “to improve, to optimize,” human rights. Instead, he said, it had become an “international sounding board to maintain a discourse against the Bolivarian government and against the Venezuelan people."

The office had “become the private law firm of coup plotters and terrorist groups that permanently conspire against the country," Gil said, though he did not show any evidence or point to a specific example of that alleged activity.

Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the U.N. rights office of the high commissioner, based in Geneva, Switzerland, said the agency regretted the decision and is evaluating next steps.

“We continue to engage with the authorities and other stakeholders,” Shamdasani said. “Our guiding principle has been and remains the promotion and protection of the human rights of the people of Venezuela.”

The agency on Tuesday had expressed “deep concern” over the detention of Rocio San Miguel, a prominent human rights attorney in Venezuela. In a tweet, the office urged “her immediate release” and respect for her right to legal defense.

San Miguel was taken into custody Friday at the airport near Caracas while she and her daughter awaited a flight to Miami. Authorities did not acknowledge her detention until Sunday, and as of Wednesday, her attorney had not been allowed to meet with her.

About an hour before Gil’s announcement, the U.N. agency called for the respect of “due process guarantees, including right to defense” in her case.

Attorney General Tarek William Saab earlier in the week said San Miguel was being held at the Helicoide prison, an infamous institution for political prisoners. She is facing charges of treason, conspiracy and terrorism.

San Miguel’s daughter, ex-husband, two brothers and former partner also were detained following her arrest. Of them, only her former partner, Alejandro Jose Gonzales de Canales Plaza, remains in custody. He is facing charges of revealing state and military secrets and obstruction of justice.

Gil told reporters that President Nicolás Maduro agreed to cooperate with the high commissioner in September 2019 to establish the local technical advisory office in Caracas to “show the world the advances in human rights in Venezuela.”

He said the office had 13 staff members as of Thursday.

Months before Maduro's 2019 decision, the high commissioner at the time, Michelle Bachelet, had published a scathing report detailing widespread human rights abuses at the hands of Venezuelan government security forces.

The U.N. Human Rights Council had also voted to set up an independent fact-finding mission to look into allegations of killings, disappearances, arbitrary detention and torture in Venezuela.

The fact-finding mission has never been allowed to visit the country. But its investigations have documented, among other things, that the government intensified efforts to curtail democratic freedoms ahead of this year's coming presidential election. The mission accused the government of using threats, surveillance and harassment against politicians, labor leaders, journalists, human rights defenders and other real or perceived opponents.

In addition to the U.N., 200 non-governmental organizations in Venezuela, the European Union, and the Canadian and United States governments have expressed concerns over the San Miguel's detention.

San Miguel's detention is part of the Venezuelan government’s policies of “criminalization and persecution of the work of promoting and defending human rights and closing civic space in Venezuela," the Venezuelan organizations said in a statement Monday. Both are based on the idea that social activists and human rights defenders are “internal enemies” who participate in "alleged conspiracies and attempts at ‘assassinations,’” it said.

San Miguel’s detention happened more than three months after the U.S. government rolled back some economic sanctions against Venezuela following Maduro’s commitment to hold an election in the second half of 2024, lift bans preventing adversaries from holding office and release political prisoners. His promises are part of an agreement signed in the Caribbean island of Barbados between his representatives and those of a faction of the opposition.

Since it was signed, Maduro's government has been testing its limits. It has blocked the candidacy of the winner of the opposition's presidential primary and arrested numerous perceived or actual adversaries, including campaign staffers of the blocked candidate. It has also repeatedly accused members of the opposition of having links to various plots to kill Maduro and his inner circle between last May and January without showing any evidence.

The government also only released about 20 political prisoners. The Venezuela-based organization Foro Penal tallied 263 political prisoners in the South American country as of Thursday.

Human Rights Watch on Thursday condemned the government's decision to suspend the activities of the U.N. office, describing its presence in Venezuela as “crucial.”

“Amid a new wave of repression, governments in the region should call for its reestablishment," Juanita Goebertus, Americas director for Human Rights Watch, tweeted.
