what i love about the dc absolute universe is that it’s not an edgy version of these characters, they’re not attempting a “what if your favourite hero was a bad guy”. no, instead it tells us that the circumstances in which these heroes become are so different and sometimes so adverse and YET they choose to be heroes, they choose kindness, compassion, justice and truth. That it doesn’t matter how you’re brought in to the world, it matters what you do when you have the opportunity and circumstance to do better. at its core that’s exactly what wonder woman, superman and batman represent.

my extremely subjective current ranking of the absolute dc series based on how much i personally enjoy them:

7: absolute batman post-issue #6: it just feels like the sauce was lost. the first arc of absolute batman was really well-paced and felt like it had something to say. after that, it felt more like scott snyder trying to throw as many hype moments and aura farming panels as possible into every issue, and that’s not even mentioning how the one singular black character in this series was treated. i’ll write a post about you someday, absolute waylon jones. 5/10.

6: absolute superman: i don’t have too much to say about this one. i don’t know if i’d call it actively bad, but it’s just kinda there. a little bit mid if i do say so myself. potentially controversial take? idk. maybe. 6/10.

5: absolute flash: massive jump in quality here. i’ve been loving absolute flash, and the fact that it’s so low on this list is a testament to the quality of the absolute line. i really love the dynamic that wally and grodd share, and it feeds my tmasc wally headcanon very well. 8/10 would read again

4: absolute batman (initial 6 issues): yeah this is pretty good. above absolute flash, but just barely. the way bruce has friends that aren’t the bat family is so good. his gang of guys all feel super genuine, like they actually have been friends since elementary school. shout out to shitty broke ass 20something bruce wayne who has 5 friends in total. one of them is his mom. what a loser. love him. black mask is a great antagonist for this batman, and i wish they’d kept more in line with that style of antagonist. a grounded batman with focus on economic struggle could have been an amazing throughline to focus on for this series. but we didn’t get that now did we. 8/10

3: absolute wonder woman: oh hell yeah. this may be the best wonder woman title ever. this radical reinvention of the character works so well in keeping diana similar enough to her main universe counterpart to be recognizable, but also gives her an extremely compelling backstory and new set of powers as a battle-witch from the wild isle of hell. her relationships with her friends/polycule are so sweet, and i love watching her grow. this is to say nothing of the phenomenal art. great series. 9/10!

2: absolute green lantern: this may be my craziest take yet, but issue 4 really solidified it. sojourner mullein as the main character was a wild pick, but hot damn was it a good one. i love the way jo and hal contrast one another, and the back-and-forth storylines being presented to us simultaneously is really great narrative work! every issue keeps me intrigued and wanting to learn more about the fate of evergreen. also, the corps not being present is an amazing idea. i’m a huge fan of the green lantern corps (my current pfp is soranik natu i do NOT play about this shit) but removing this aspect of the green lantern mythos and forcing jo to figure out this alien magic on her own is a really fun choice! 9/10! :D

1: absolute martian manhunter: undoubtedly and indisputably the best absolute series. this was established in issue #1 and every issue since has been a victory lap from camp and rodriguez flexing how fucking amazing this series is. it’s truly one of the best comics i’ve ever read. 10/10.
