What's New Experts are warning of a looming increase in grocery prices as agricultural soil becomes increasingly unproductive. In a concerning trend that could impact households across the globe, the combination of overfarming, climate change and insufficient sustainable practices has left vast swaths of farmland degraded and unproductive, threatening food supply chains and driving up costs. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that 33 percent of the Earth's soils are already degraded and more than 90 percent could become degraded by 2050. Why It Matters According to the FAO, soil erosion "occurs naturally under all climatic conditions and on all continents, but it is significantly increased and accelerated by unsustainable human activities (up to 1,000 times) through intensive agriculture, deforestation, overgrazing and improper land use changes. "Soil erosion rates are much higher than soil formation rates," the FAO said. "Soil is a finite resource, meaning its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human lifespan." A map previously published by Newsweek predicts that 95 percent of America's soil will be degraded in less than 30 years. Only a 5 percent area is marked not degraded.
i absolutely love (/s) how this story is being framed as further price inflation and economic woes being the primary thing to worry about. the worst part of barren food stores isn't related to high prices.
the soil of our earth, our home planet, is dying/being killed by industrial agriculture, and as such we are now struggling to produce food. what this describes is imminent global famine within most of our lifetimes (~30yrs). sticker shock is not the biggest threat. that award goes to malnutrition and starvation.
it's possible to recover from this. but the solutions involved cost money and also winds up reducing overall crop yield, so many farmers aren’t going to pursue these solutions as frequently because they just aren’t feasible. the biggest concern for the average farmer is economic viability. point blank.
thus, any efforts at taking even baby steps to solve this problem will require centralized governments, particularly in the west, to enact direct, formative changes. unfortunately, all of them happen to be collapsing at this very moment. so... hang on tight, i suppose.

hey dog! sorry to bug you with a coding question, but i'm learning rpg maker mv for a fangame & i'm wondering how you did a couple things. if it's not too much trouble, could you quickly explain some of it? i've scrounged around as much as i can but i cant find what i need so i thought it'd be worth asking directly ^^;
how did you get the players name to show up in the message log? i know theres a plugin that adds the name windows for other characters & i've got that figured out, but i have no idea how to get the players name to show up in the history after selecting stuff
how'd you get the graphic for the route diverging choices to show & play During choices? so far ive figured out that looping the images recreates the visual but then the game doesn't progress, bc its just stuck in that loop...

It's been close to 6 years since I started making DT, and I had to figure out a few solutions to specific issues that cropped up which I've likely forgotten now, but I'll answer what I can remember. I'm also gonna give you some advice and advise you not to use RPG Maker for projects like these.
I basically Scott Cawthon'd DT and forced the engine to yield to my demands because I wanted to use the one I knew best. A few of these solutions are over-complicated because the easier ones (which would've worked in other engines) had to be constructed differently. I'll also mention a few solutions to problems you might not have encountered (but inevitably will if you try to recreate DT.) With that out of the way...
1)
You'll want these settings for the backlog plugin. the \c[x] commands refer to standard name colours. Log special inputs set to true, followed up by this below:

With \n[1] being the name you want and the number after the first c being what colour you want.
I'll also save you a potential future issue: I'd actually recommend you find the backlog plugin I used in DT's files (located inside the www/js/plugins folder) and use the version I have instead of the official release if you're not already, because I made a small change to fix an error. Basically, it breaks slightly with the plugin that lets you bring up the menu during dialogue because text reloads when you leave the menu and re-enter the text box, causing text to be logged at least twice after you pause it. If you keep bringing up the menu, you'll get constant duplication. I simply added a line of code that tells the log not to have two duplicates in a row. Not a programmer, but it seems works.
2)I did it in a funny way to ensure the engine wouldn't screw it up. Basically, there's 3 steps to the event and it's kinda hard to explain (and would be annoying to reproduce without a lot of trial and error for a beginner.) It's easier if I show my code. The first thing I do is run a common event (you can also just paste this code in and run it from the event) that renders the frames used by the popup, so they're loaded into memory + ready to go.
As you can see, they're set to 0 opacity but now ready to be used. Obviously they have to be on a layer that isn't being used by anything else in the scene (and won't be during this part of the game.) I run this event ahead of time, usually 4 messages before the choice comes up or so, so even slower PCs should have time to get them up.
The 'if head' thing just switches between the files for phone/typegingi's heads. I render each frame on separate layers and toggle their opacity from one to the next on a single frame to avoid flickering (bc RPG maker's renderer is hot trash and I have to work around it. Case in point.)
Step 2 is a second command event that orders the frames to fade in.
One layer is the text (which doesn't move) and the other is the first frame of the little head animation. A switch is also turned on at the end, and this signals the animation to go, which is handled by an event on any map where a choice like this comes up.
The event page that handles the animation itself has 2 pages, one to handle the animation as it goes and the other to handle when it stops (note that you could use one page and simply use a conditional branch. I didn't.)
Set to parallel so it runs in the bg behind normal events. As you can see, every 17 frames, I command one image to fade out over a single frame and another to fade in. It loops perfectly, cycling from middle frame, to left, to middle, to right, back to middle. Finally, when you select any route diverging choice, it sets off a second switch, which activates the second event page and commands the game to dispose of the graphics and then turn itself off.
Basically, it's the same animation but with a twist. The text is faded out over 60 frames and then the same animation is played as before, except the values it fades back into go from 255, to 170 to 85. Each of those commands is also followed by a 17 second fade to the opacity of the next frame. So, frame one renders in one frame at 255. Then seventeen frame fadeout to 170... Next frame renders for 1 frame AT 170, then fades out gradually to 85. Then next frame renders at 85 during 1 frame, fades to 0. This is how i synced the turning animation to fade out convincingly.
At the very end, I turn both of the switches this event page uses off so both event pages don't continue on loop. I also have a check for the first event variable to check if the game should still think the animation is running, as a failsafe. I don't remember if this mattered.
3)It's a function in the YEP Extended Message Pack. You'll see the commands for hiding (temporarily removing) + disabling choices (greying them out) as you scroll through the help list, almost 2/3 down. The thing you have to remember though is that messages that are commanded to be hidden/disabled will STAY disabled unless you turn them back on. As urban populations boom, urban agriculture is increasingly looked to as a local food source and a way to help combat inequitable food access. But little is known about how productive urban agriculture is compared to conventional, rural farming. A new study digs in, finding urban gardeners and hydroponics can meet and sometimes exceed the yields of rural farms. “Despite its growing popularity, there’s still quite a lot we don’t know about urban agriculture, like whether the yields are similar to conventional agriculture, or even what crops are commonly grown,” says Florian Payen, an environmental scientist at Lancaster University and lead author of the study, published today in AGU’s journal Earth’s Future. The new study compiles studies on urban agriculture from 53 countries to find out which crops grow well in cities, what growing methods are most effective, and what spaces can be utilized for growing. The researchers find that urban yields for some crops, like cucumbers, tubers and lettuces, are two to four times higher than conventional farming. Many other urban crops studied are produced at similar or higher rates than in rural settings. Cost efficiency remains an open but important question. Most studies on urban agriculture have focused on green spaces, such as private and community gardens, parks and field growing operations. Payen’s work includes “gray” spaces — places in cities that are already built but could be used for growing, such as rooftops and building facades. In both green and gray spaces, the study examines a suite of crops grown in soils versus hydroponics, horizontal versus vertical farming, and natural versus controlled conditions. “Surprisingly, there were few differences between overall yields in indoor spaces and outdoor green spaces, but there were clear differences in the suitability of crop types to different gray spaces,” Payen says. Certain crops like lettuces, kale and broccoli are more naturally suited to be grown vertically in indoor spaces than others. “You can’t exactly stack up apple trees in a five- or ten-layer high growth chamber,” he says, “though we did find one study that managed to grow wheat stacked up like that.” Other crops, like watery vegetables (e.g., tomatoes) and leafy greens, performed well in hydroponic environments. And crops grown in fully controlled environments can be grown throughout the year, allowing harvests to happen more times per year than in open-air environments, which leads to higher annual yields. But scientists will need to keep studying these systems to plan cost-effective agriculture solutions. The finding that urban agriculture can have similar or greater yields to conventional agriculture “is exactly what we have been waiting for in the urban agriculture research community,” says Erica Dorr, an environmental scientist at AgroParisTech who was not involved in the study.

At first glance, Xi Jinping seems to have lost the plot.
China’s president appears to be smothering the entrepreneurial dynamism that allowed his country to crawl out of poverty and become the factory of the world. He has brushed aside Deng Xiaoping’s maxim “To get rich is glorious” in favor of centralized planning and Communist-sounding slogans like “ecological civilization” and “new, quality productive forces,” which have prompted predictions of the end of China’s economic miracle.
But Mr. Xi is, in fact, making a decades-long bet that China can dominate the global transition to green energy, with his one-party state acting as the driving force in a way that free markets cannot or will not. His ultimate goal is not just to address one of humanity’s most urgent problems — climate change — but also to position China as the global savior in the process.
It has already begun. In recent years, the transition away from fossil fuels has become Mr. Xi’s mantra and the common thread in China’s industrial policies. It’s yielding results: China is now the world’s leading manufacturer of climate-friendly technologies, such as solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles. Last year the energy transition was China’s single biggest driver of overall investment and economic growth, making it the first large economy to achieve that.
This raises an important question for the United States and all of humanity: Is Mr. Xi right? Is a state-directed system like China’s better positioned to solve a generational crisis like climate change, or is a decentralized market approach — i.e., the American way — the answer?
How this plays out could have serious implications for American power and influence.
Look at what happened in the early 20th century, when fascism posed a global threat. America entered the fight late, but with its industrial power — the arsenal of democracy — it emerged on top. Whoever unlocks the door inherits the kingdom, and the United States set about building a new architecture of trade and international relations. The era of American dominance began.
Climate change is, similarly, a global problem, one that threatens our species and the world’s biodiversity. Where do Brazil, Pakistan, Indonesia and other large developing nations that are already grappling with the effects of climate change find their solutions? It will be in technologies that offer an affordable path to decarbonization, and so far, it’s China that is providing most of the solar panels, electric cars and more. China’s exports, increasingly led by green technology, are booming, and much of the growth involves exports to developing countries.
From the American neoliberal economic viewpoint, a state-led push like this might seem illegitimate or even unfair. The state, with its subsidies and political directives, is making decisions that are better left to the markets, the thinking goes.
But China’s leaders have their own calculations, which prioritize stability decades from now over shareholder returns today. Chinese history is littered with dynasties that fell because of famines, floods or failures to adapt to new realities. The Chinese Communist Party’s centrally planned system values constant struggle for its own sake, and today’s struggle is against climate change. China received a frightening reminder of this in 2022, when vast areas of the country baked for weeks under a record heat wave that dried up rivers, withered crops and was blamed for several heatstroke deaths.

The monstrous calorific requirements of hummingbirds do end up impacting their maximum size and nectar is only useful if you're small enough to subsist off it - a big hummingbird would need to be constantly surrounded by extremely nectar rich flowers 24/7 and that seems unlikely
The solution is farming I guess.. hmm if they can develop the technology to produce a high-yield sugar crop before they all died out they could mayybe survive? Ultimately I don't see it being realistic within the setting due to the unique challenges of farming and land use, potentially attracting crawling beasts, etc.
It's such a pity because I love hummingbirds, they're the emblematic animal of my dnd character.. they are so aggressive and territorial and fighty and their behaviour is absolutely fascinating. I fully support hummingbird harpies but not in isok setting because I don't think they could make it work... But there's nothing stopping you making something of your own ;)

Previous Episode of the Remorse Timeline
Megatron's about to get real mad.
So again, Terminus isn't a fighter, but he does have a wealth of knowledge and supplies in terms of history and agriculture. As a result he's been asked by the military to help grow some of those crops on the island. So that's what he's been doing prior to the Liberio attack. People are stunned to see a titan planting seeds and growing crops, but hey, he's also giving tips on how to grow said things. Mr. Blause approves of Terminus' methods.
Megatron is still actively avoiding him, trying so hard to focus on the mission and finding out where Eren is! Terminus would want to talk to Megatron and ask how he's been, and everyone else is pressuring Megatron into talking to Terminus. Again, huge opportunity so many of them wish they had with their deceased loved ones. Armin tries to convince him personally, but:
Megatron:....Your situation is different from mine. You still fight for the betterment of your island. You still consider the safety of the world as a whole, trying to find a peaceful solution through the chaos. I became worse than the very thing I swore to destroy. If your parents were to return, they would still see remnants of a kind and gentle son. I am nothing more than a husk used by the god of destruction! There is nothing left of D-16! He died in the mines that day! So tell me Armin: what in the Allspark am I supposed to say?! How am I to handle things differently?! How am I supposed to tell Terminus that he should have let die in the mines that day in order to spare himself and Cybertron the pain of what I would become?!
Megatron stands up: I don't want sympathy or empathy or remorse! I just...I wished Terminus had stayed dead. It would have spared us both.
Terminus does hear about that and he just feels even worse and kind of gives up on Megatron really talking to him at all.
That being said, Terminus doesn't get involved in the Liberio attack, only hearing about it word of mouth. And I'll be generous, Megatron's own distractions during the Liberio fight changes a few small moments, leading to Falco not getting knocked into a coma. He does fall off the ship because he unable to find stable balance, and the bullet nearly hitting him doesn't help, but Sasha catches him and brings him back up to the ship. But Gabi still has that bullet hole in her ear, and she and Falco are prisoners in a jail cell. They don't find out about the whole Megatron/Matthew reveal. Megatron doesn't visit them this time around, but Gabi and Falco still break out of prison. Note that Gabi and Falco are still on bad terms with each other, Gabi being the more hostile and it's only getting worse after Zofia's death in Liberio.
As Gabi and Falco are on the run, the two come across one of Terminus' crop yield that's already producing fruit. Falco and Gabi are hungry, but it's Falco that makes the move. Gabi insists that they don't eat food off an island of devils, but Falco can't wait. He tries to grab a few for himself and Gabi, but yells when something picks him up by his jacket and lifts him in the air, dropping the food in the process. Falco is terrified as he's now face to face with Terminus holding him in one servo while using a cane to support himself. Before Terminus can speak, Gabi screams and rushes him, holding a pitchfork she found near the crops. She tries to stab Terminus in the ankle but it does little to nothing. She then smacks his pede repeatedly with the pitchfork, demanding he let Falco go while screaming profanities and insults.
Terminus: I assume she's with you.
Falco, surprised he can talk: Uhhhhhhhhhhh
Terminus is just tired and he sits down before grabbing Gabi looking the two of them in the eye. He demands to know what they were doing trying to steal his crops. Falco tries to lie, says they were hungry and they ran away from home. Terminus doesn't buy that completely as he brings up the insults thrown his way, stating that he's heard them from humans a million times on the mainland. Falco tries to come up with another excuse, but Gabi makes things worse by screaming more insults at him, and Terminus puts two and two together and realizes they were the Marleyan prisoners that snuck aboard the Jackhammer. Terminus is taken off guard at how young they were, not remembering it being brought up in conversation.
Falco asks fearfully if Terminus was going to kill them. And Terminus states that he doesn't kill before setting them down. Gabi calls him a liar and Terminus can't help but be annoyed with this human. He knows she's brainwashed, but c'mon! He just let them go! Falco asks if he was going to turn them in, and Terminus does think it over.
He knows things are hostile on the island right now, and that there would be a few people wanting to kill two people from Marley, regardless if they were children. He's been in prison himself. It's not fun. But he can't have two trained soldiers running around trying to kill people, especially Gabi.
So he gives them an ultimatum: they could stay with him and help him out with agricultural stuff. He was considered a neutral party; no one would suspect they were with him. In return, they would be protected and fed. Gabi immediately says no to the idea while Falco is insisting that she do it. Gabi shouts at Falco, calling him a traitor, but Terminus speaks up again, reminding her that he can just turn them over if they say no to his deal. Falco reminds her that the two of them need to survive and get back home. Gabi is forced to reconsider and decides to cooperate for now until she can find a means of escaping.
Terminus grabs his cane and gestures for them to pick up their fruit before following him. Falco scrambles to grab what he can and quickly follows while Gabi reluctantly follows behind Falco, holding the pitchfork in her hands.
Some notes:
-So Terminus makes Falco and Gabi work, especially since he thinks it's good to have smaller hands. Falco excels while Gabi's face is in the dirt. She keeps screwing up.
-Falco starts talking with Terminus and confesses that he's surprised to meet a talking titan, and one that was old. Falco realizes his mistake but Terminus can't help but chuckle. Terminus tells Falco that he's been old for a long time.
-Falco and Terminus talk a lot. Terminus talks a lot about some of the plants that have been considered extinct while Falco is excited learning history about the world.
-Gabi gets frustrated and jealous really fast. Falco was falling for the words of this titan. This titan was trying to convert Falco and get him to join this island of devils. Gabi confronts Falco about it, but Falco can't help but be mad at her. Terminus was protecting them for now. And he thought that she considered him a bad friend. Why should she care how he spends his time?
-Gabi's hurt by this and Terminus does notice, deciding ask what's wrong and give her advice. Gabi initially refuses, but Terminus speaks from his own experience with Megatron (without saying his name) and how the two aren't on speaking terms, and Gabi does listen, surprised that a titan would have such...complex problems.
-Megatron asks Wheeljack to bring Terminus to the neutral ship as signs of the chaos persist. Wheeljack goes to grab him, and Terminus states that's he's bringing Gabi and Falco. Wheeljack is a little suspicious at their nervous expressions, but doesn't question it as he brings all three to the neutral ship. Gabi and Falco are shocked at the sight of humans there (The Restorationists, Erwin practicing with his new arm, Kenny), Megatron makes himself known to talk to Wheeljack, but his mind screeches to a halt when he spots Falco and Gabi hiding behind Terminus in fear of him.
-And Megatron can't help but start laughing at the absurdity of it all.
(Setup needed to happen first, but Gabi and Falco will find out in the next ask, or a few moments, depending on the time frame you're looking at)
