so I've just been thinking on this, and spoken to a few people who all have differing opinions, soooo~ (snz kink incase it's unclear)

please feel free to elaborate in tags/comments/anything, I'm really interested in knowing what people on here feel about this!

(personally, op sits on the 'maybe -> no side of things, not entirely against it, but not really looking for it/wanting it either~ something about feeling inferiority with the amount of snz I can reasonably provide them, versus what I'd be wanting/craving, would always feel like a bit of a disappointment/let down~ as well as, there's something a bit special to me about a partner who doesn't have this kink indulging you because they like how you react/think it's cute/hot, etcetc~)

I can't stop thinking about the post from a few days ago about how Critical Role has been great at doing personal faith but didn't put the necessary work in to discuss the religious/god angle of c3 in-depth. Like the fact that Cardinal Respa was linked to both the Dawnfather and the Chained Oblivion is, on a personal level, very interesting (fallen/corrupted priest goes hard) but like does that mean that there's a Papacy somewhere in Exandria dedicated to the Dawnfather? If so, are there more cardinals who ordain the bishops of the Dawnfather? Are there Conclave-level intrigues going on in the Dawnfather's Sistine Chapel? Why is the Dawnfather so Christianity-coded in vibes alone if there's no actual outline of his religious organisations? With Downfall the Dawnchild/Dawnfather thing makes the allusions to Christ as Son of God co-existing with the Father textual - was there a Dawnfather Schism around whether the Dawnchild was a separate mortal? Was there a Reformation about how the Dawnfather's Pope kept selling indulgences? Is that why the priest of the Dawnfather Grog & Pike offer a drink to doesn't partake because of a cultural shift between Protestant-Temperance-League-coded and Catholic-coded Dawnfather congregations? Why do I have so many questions about the religious organisation of one of the most important Prime Deities in Exandria and to Critical Role's 3 campaigns? How on earth were the cast (and us as the viewers!) meant to care about the gods if all they had were "really tall kings" instead of interrogating how religious organisations provide both a place of healing and community to a wide range of people and also a place of horrific harm and abuse for a wide range of people?

clytemnestra's power is limited and gendered, and certainly many real enslaved people have continued the cycle of abuse with their children... suffering makes people worse in almost every way and every case, etc. but i do think it's an interesting point of comparison for the victimization of each woman with respect to her children in these tragedies. clytemnestra's most important fantasy is of getting revenge for her dead child, so that in a way she sacrifices her other children, and andromache's is of getting to keep her living child

Where do you find these manuscripts? Is it like a website or do you find it randomly??

1)

medieval manuscripts are typically owned by libraries and showcased on the library's websites. so one thing i do is i randomly browse those digitized manuscript collections (like the collections of the bavarian state library or the bodleian libraries, to name just two), which everybody can do for free without any special access. some digital collections provide more useful tools than others (like search functions, filters, annotations on each manuscript). if they don't, the process of wading through numerous non-illustrated manuscripts before i find an illustrated one at all can be quite tedious.

there are databases which help to navigate the vast sea of manuscripts. the one i couldn't live without personally use the most is called KdIH (Katalog der deutschsprachigen illustrierten Handschriften des Mittelalters). it's a project which aims to list all illustrated medieval manuscripts written in german dialects. the KdIH provides descriptions of the contents of each manuscript (with a focus on the illustrations), and if there's a digital reproduction of a manuscript available anywhere, the KdIH usually links to it. the KdIH is an invaluable tool for me because of its focus on illustrated manuscripts, because of the informations it provides for each manuscript, and because of its useful search function (once you've gotten over the initial confusion of how to navigate the website). the downside is that it includes only german manuscripts, which is one of the main reasons for the over-representation of german manuscripts on my blog (sorry about that).

another important database for german manuscripts in general (i.e. not just illustrated ones) is the handschriftencensus, which catalogues information regarding the entirety of german language manuscripts of the middle ages, and also links to the digital reproductions of each manuscript.

then there are simply considerable snowball effects. if you do even just superficial research on any medieval topic at all (say, if you open the wikipedia article on alchemy), you will inevitably stumble upon mentions of specific illustrated manuscripts. the next step is to simply search for a digital copy of the manuscript in question (this part can sometimes be easier said than done, especially when you're coming from wikipedia). one thing to keep in mind is that a manuscript illustration seldom comes alone - so every hint to any illustration at all is a greatly valuable one (if you do what i do lol). there's always gonna be something interesting in any given illustrated manuscript. (sidenote: one very effective 'cheat code' would be to simply go through all manuscripts that other online hobbyist archivers of manuscript illustrations have gone through before - like @discardingimages on tumblr - but some kind of 'professional pride' detains me from doing so. that's just a kind of stubbornness though. like, i want to find my material more or less on my own, not just the images but also the manuscripts, and i apply arbitrary rules to my search as to what exactly that means.)

5)

whatever tool or strategy i use to find specific illustrated manuscripts-- in the end, one unavoidable step is to actually manually skim through the (digitized) manuscript. i usually have at least a quick look at every single illustrated page, and i download or screenshot everything that is interesting to me. this process can take up to an hour per manuscript.

in conclusion, i'd say that finding cool illuminated manuscripts is much simpler than i would have thought before i started this blog. there are so many of them out there and they're basically just 'hidden in plain side', it's really astounding. finding the manuscripts doesn't require special skills, just some basic experience with/knowledge of the tools available. the reason i'm able to post interesting images almost daily is just that i spend a lot of time doing all of this, going through manuscripts, curating this blog, etc. i find a lot of comfort in it, i learn a lot along the way, and i immensely enjoy people's engagement with my posts. so that's that :)

my laptop is on the way out. It's been on the way out for like. A year and a half, but I can't let her die yet. BUT I do want to save up money for a new laptop soon! Curious as to if anyone has any laptop recommendations...

I recently invested in a secondhand ipad to try out which has been a lot of fun, so I'm all set on that front. I'm kind of waffling back and forth between another 2-in-1 (my current laptop is a lenovo yoga 920 and I LIKE the touchscreen so i can draw directly on it! but there are tradeoffs other places) or getting a traditional clamshell laptop and something like a huion kamvas... see MY biggest shock was: for all this time, i was under the impression you WEREN'T a fan of how Looney Tunes made the characters more consistently actors post-Golden Age!

RUBS MY HANDS TOGETHER. I HAVE A VERY NUANCED AND LIKELY HYPOCRITICAL ANSWER TO THIS. the tldr kind of boils down to "i don't like it... unless i'm the one doing it" which is where the hypocrisy comes in LOL. but the LONGER form of this is:

i think my quickness to be like "no Patrick, the characters are not actors" is because i personally have had people try to argue to me that the characters are actually actors, and arguing against the intent of the shorts. stuff like "Daffy doesn't hate Bugs because they're actors, it's all fake, these characters are actors" etc. i know it's difficult to understand because there are multiple truths and wires being crossed that muddies up the understanding. especially with the prevalence of this "big happy actor family" framing in modern times. there are shorts where they're framed as actors, and there are publicity materials framing it as such too! there's definitely a link there! but it should be assumed that they're actors only when the short contextually says they're actors. Sylvester chasing Tweety isn't just a big act and they're all buddy buddy, That Cat Wants To Kill That Bird. and i think that's what irks me the most, is that the insistence that these guys are actors ALL THE TIME sort of devalues the intent of the shorts. to me it sometimes comes off as "well, if there's not the meta commentary of them being actors here, then this is just stupid old cartoon bullshit who cares". i sometimes get the feeling that these shorts are seen as more dispensable if there isn't that framing there for people, that it's just easy to write off. i have similar feelings about the characters knowing each other by name--Elmer calling Bugs by his name in every cartoon would feel very gross and weird and corporate synergy-y to me. i bring this up because i again have had people try to argue against me about this and that, actually, the characters do know each other every short... and it's just not true!!!

SO it's not so much the acting framing that bugs me, but the misinterpretation of it and arguing it as fact. and as i said above, i sometimes get the interpretation that people are only interested in the shorts or characters if they can warp it into that actor angle, and while it is a SUPER INTERESTING ANGLE (i would not have dedicated 5 years of my life to an entire actor au and retooling it multiple times, writing hundreds of documents for it and drawings dozens and dozens of pictures for it, if i did not find it interesting), it irks me the wrong way when people accidentally insinuate that the shorts and characters are only valuable when viewed through this lens.

my own actor au (and that's another thing, i'm very adamant to refer to it AS an AU for the above reasons) i'm very happy with, because i've hit a good balance with it. it's a combination of all of my favorite things: pig and duck being close together and my extremely neurotic, encyclopedic knowledge of these shorts and their history. i tend not to love actor aus because there are a lot of similar tropes that they hit that i'm avoidant of, i don't like "jk, this guy is totally different off-screen than he is on!!!!!!!!" personally--my actor au is like. it's a recontextualization of the shorts. it's a what-if scenario that sort of DEEPENS what is already there rather than completely throws it out the window. i do imagine the characters to be rather similar to their on-screen counterparts, and it's sort of like taking those on-screen counterparts and revealing that there's a whole lot more to them rather than overhauling them.

and sometimes the contrast is the point! the whole hook of my au (at least so far--there are a lot of different themes because it's 35 years worth of history to go through and i'm going through every damn one) is that Petunia (who works for WB, family friend of Porky's in this au and they have the best lavender friendship ever i've kinda fallen in love with their dynamic, she's pretty much a sister figure to him) tricks Porky into moving out to Hollywood and getting a job as an actor against his will, because she thinks he'll be really good at it. Porky is extremely reclusive and shy and neurotic and has subzero confidence, he gets the job and has no idea how, he feels like he's walking into walls, people are telling him he's doing a good job but he doesn't believe it and feels like everyone is pulling an incredibly elaborate joke on him. ...obviously, there's a bit of a contrast between that and the smiling, rosy cheeked pig that we all love (but i also have plenty of "evidence" and reasoning for Porky's behavior starting out too). but then he meets Daffy and, initially incredibly put off and overwhelmed and confused by him, is so impressed with his acting abilities and literally insane performance that he finally realizes what he wants to do now and why he's here, and so Daffy helps him come out of that shell. the smiling rosy cheeked pig we see on screen, once a complete farce that Porky had to force (because he is miserable and so unconfident in reality) becomes a more genuine reflection of Porky's attitude as they get closer and feed off of each other's energy. so there is some of that depth and differentiation there, but it feeds into a broader recontextualization of the character using the shorts as a literal base

SO! YES! LOL i know my attitude is a bit hypocritical... i'm not against the acting theming because there are hints of it very often in the originals and publicity material, but i think it's a delicate issue with a lot of nuance and i really don't like when people try to pass off everything and everyone as being farcical and intended as actors, just because LT Back in Action told them so
