He's a Phantom

Heya, I've been meaning to post my parts for the Rephanimated project and suffered a terrible case of procrastination.

I have a few scenes in the MAP, so more posts to come~ Behind the scenes and animation progress under the cut:

Part One: Base sketch and keyframes. Pretty self explanatory, redrawing Danno in my own style and figuring out his moving parts

Part Two: I wanted to have his eyes react to the light somewhat, so I workshopped some ideas regarding pupils and shine. I usually try a few different effects in the draft stage before I decide on which I'll choose

Part Three: While I took some time to think about it, decided to move on to the line art and blocking out the silhouette.

Part Four: By now I had a better idea of how I wanted to animate the eyes, having them follow the light along with the cat pupil (because why not) I coloured the base here too

Part Five: I continue colouring like any regular drawing, adding overlays and shadows (multiply layer) to give it a bit more vibrancy.

The eyes also get a shine effect that I had attempted in the draft, just a lot cleaner looking

Part Six: This part was painful, since I knew what I wanted to do but didn't have the know how on how to make it happen. Turns out masking/clipping can be temperamental for animation if you don't plan ahead. I ended up getting it to work after several attempts

Part Seven: Now I was ): because the eye animations were mostly hidden, so I decided to copy + paste them onto a new layer, then have them fade out so you have a few extra frames of spooky atmosphere

Part Eight: Lastly, darkening the scene and exporting

basically what the title says, you draw the arcane characters à la hyperpigmentation 😍 i needed smth silly to work on to get me out of my writing rut, hope you enjoy :p

content: gn!reader, reader is their partner (could be seen as platonic/child reader but i think most of, if not all, the hcs allude or explicitly call reader their partner - sorry!)

she LOVES it

as an artist, engineer, overall creator she can really appreciate the more wacky expressions of art

she does a whole art critique (barely a critique tbh) and pretends to be some stuffy piltie talking about the genius and emotion behind the artwork

“ya know, toots, i’m reaaallyyyy enjoying what ya did with that…um, splodge? on my face there. yeah!”

she draws her own version but this time it’s a portrait of you

you swap them and have a cute little date where you colour the pictures in together and add details in the background

by the end, jinx’s workshop is covered in glue and glitter and paint and powder and also for some reason silly string

jinx even makes frames from scratch so they can be hung up - they’re probably the most nicely presentee decoration she has in her place

he looks down absently and has to do a double take

walks away and goes about his duties helping the firelights and though you suspect he might be upset, he did take the picture with him

feels so guilty about his reaction he almost sacks himself into a wall as he rides his hover board

later that night he apologises and makes a show of sticking the picture on his bedroom wall (in the corner he can barely see of course)

she’s been in prison and seen some interesting tattoos but this takes the cake

spends a good ten minutes staring at it whilst rubbing her chin as if that’s gonna make it look better

asks you if this was the rough draft

she’s smooth though so she basically tells you she hates it but in a way that you don’t even realise - you’re too busy being seduced to notice

vi keeps the picture and shows jinx; needless to say, this portrait becomes famous

kids all through the lanes have a challenge where they find all the weird faces jinx spray painted everywhere

vi pretends to act dumb as if she doesn’t know how jinx got ahold of them but you both know what happened LMAO

she probably just had an argument with her mum over being an enforcer so she really needed this to lighten her spirits

teases you over it but accepts it gracefully because she’s a kiramman and those manners have been engrained into her

keeps it in her room as a joke and everything’s seemingly ok

except she can’t stop looking at it

and then looking at her reflection in the mirror

starts to question reality because she knows there’s no way she looks like that but if so, why would you draw it in the first place 😭

then she enters the mad stage and she confronts you about this thing called negging she discovered

it’s a loooooong night but don’t worry it ends in lots of laughter and giggles

she understands it wasn’t serious and was just projecting her stress onto the picture

but then this starts a new tradition where you two draw daily doodles of each other; sometimes with stupid faces, other times as animals, whatever you two are feeling really

no, she’s literally speechless for a good minute or two as you hold it out for her

she eventually takes the portrait from your hands but does it in a way where you’d think it was going to explode the second she touches it

she tries her best to smile and be graceful about it, years of etiquette training being tested but even this is a bit excessive

she finds a way to dodge actually having to tell you it looks bad but also dodges telling you that it looks good too - she’s a lot of things but she’s not a liar 😭

she’s incredibly diplomatic

the very next day she’s introducing you to an absolutely fabulous painter who just happened to make an impromptu visit but has just enough time to run a session (or multiple) with you!

how serendipitous is this!

never again will she receive a portrait from you like hyperpigmentation

you handed this to him in the busy academy building in front of SOOO many people and now his face is red

his teeth are gritted, hand rubbing the back of his neck and if you look closely there’s even beads of sweat dripping down his forehead

you’ve got this man stressed out

takes like 20 minutes trying to tell you that he’s not too sure if this is exactly his style

internally he’s crying for help because he just wants to get out of this situation

he loves you don’t get it wrong but this has never happened to him before and it’s not like they’ve got a guidebook on this stuff

eventually admits defeat and accepts the portrait

it’s probably in the break room and although he isn’t particularly fond of it, he won’t stand for anyone saying mean things about what you made

that is until you tell him it was all a joke in the first place and you never thought he would actually accept it considering how shitty it was

yeah, he allowed everyone a ten minute free for all where they could slander the picture after that

he is gonna give you silent treatment for all of an hour before he can’t stand it anymore and he asks you not to pull pranks like that on him again with tears in his eyes 😭

like, he’s so sleep deprived that he’s constantly squinting and so to him, it low-key looks like him

it’s only after a good few weeks of having the picture on his bedside table and actually, finally, getting eight hours of sleep that he properly looks at the picture and

but at this point it’s too late, it’s already in a frame next to the bed you two share and there’s no way he can discretely get rid of it without you noticing

the thing is, he really does appreciate that you went through the effort of drawing a picture of him since it reminds him that perhaps his love isn’t as one-sided as he fears

so he really does want to have it framed and put up on his desk so he can stare at it whenever he misses you

the problem is that even though one of his eyes is fucked up he can still see how butt ugly the drawing is

plus the fact that if he has meetings his business associates are gonna see it and that’s gonna be a tough one to explain

rather not lose out of business because his partner decided to be picasso for a day

Allowing myself to go on a tangent about the nearly 26 year old virtual pet website that i am way too invested in.

So today they released the Candy Pteri. While I appreciate what they were trying to do here with it effectively having two designs that you get to choose between (The "Melted Candy Pteri" on the left is a Paint Brush wearable that can be removed to reveal the customizable base pet on the right), I think in this case, they have created two extremely boring designs when they could have easily created one strong design, or hell, even two strong designs if they wanted to do extra work.

Because with this release, we get a base Candy Pteri with no real lineart changes (like the rounded hair tufts and spines on the Candy Zafara), and an alternate design that's just... a drawing of a Marshmallow Peep™???

I would have WAY preferred a base Pteri where they did something like give it a little marshmallow dollop shape on its head and in place of the tail tuft, like my friend @darieyrie suggested. Or they could give it the Peep dot eyes and more rounded features! There's all kinds of ways you could do this concept.

I'd be less frustrated if the Peep wearable had any Pteri traits whatsoever, but its JUST a Peep that's been slightly microwaved. Which is a little funny, but even more than the Toy Poogle is just an iDog, the Candy Pteri does not have any deviation from its base inspiration at all. It's not actually an execution of the concept of "Candy Pteri thats based on a Peep" if there's no Pteri left at all!

(also are they just banking on the Just Born corporation (who make Peeps) never taking any action on this? it kind of goes beyond 'cheeky reference', its EXACTLY their product. I mean, it seems unlikely that they'll notice or bother doing anything if they do, but i don't really know why you'd risk that.) The saving graces of this design, imo, are that the pink and cream color scheme of the base pet IS pleasant (though the lineart and shading treatment aren't really my bag), and some people will enjoy the novelty of having a pet Marshmallow Peep™.

But really this is just the latest of a number of recent outfit and color releases that feel like they don't think people want Neopets. Like. This cardinal outfit that they also released today.

I love the idea of a cardinal Pteri! But this outfit literally takes away every distinguishing trait of the Pteri to make a high effort, nicely rendered, but stylistically incongruous generic cartoon cardinal????? Its not even a Neopet anymore!!! Even if I set aside my personal dislike of the overly rendered style they're using for more and more of the site assets, this wouldn't work with most of the rendering removed either, because it would still be a Pteri in pose and proportions only.

Not every new design and outfit that's come out in the past couple years has these issues and there have been a number I've really liked, and I DO think its great that the quality of the art has improved since the JumpStart era. But I would really appreciate it if the new pet colors in particular were designed a little more thoughtfully, so that they at bare minimum still resemble the species they're supposed to be outside of the rough pose and proportions. It sometimes feels like there isn't a rough draft or workshopping progress for new colors, and the members of the art team just kind of do their own thing and then the very first draft of an idea is what gets polished and released.

The current art direction for the customization aspects of the site just has me feeling like they've decided to throw out years of relatively cohesive art and world design for a strange jumble of ideas that don't really capture the appeal or feeling of Neopets to me.

So… I’m workshopping an AU of the Truth and Deceit sillies (Pure Vanilla and Shadow Milk), right? I have a design for Shmilk, but still working on the PV one.

These were my first drawings of Lunar Deceit (my AU of Shadow Milk) and I’ve had a few more since then, and a rough draft of Solar Truth (PV AU) but I haven’t finalized a design for him yet.

But anyways, I wanted to write a story for them!

Lunar Deceit’s pronouns in the story would be, in default, they/them, but depending on what they’re doing or what form they’re taking, those may change (genderfluid silly)

Solar Truth’s pronouns, I’ve decided, are he/him at least. Whether or not that changes throughout the story I haven’t decided.

I don’t plan on giving the story a happy ending. I love happy ending stories, don’t get me wrong (Jambound is my #1 fav fanfic) but there also feels like there’s a ton of them.

I also have a problem with not finishing stories. My Dust and Ducks one (no I haven’t forgotten about it, I just completely lost motivation for it… sorry to the 13k readers on quotev who’ve been waiting 9 months..) is, well, collecting dust. So has my Ambertale storyline…

But this hyperfixation doesn’t seem to be fading, considering Eternal Sugar immediately becoming tied for first place on my CRK favs list.

PRETTY HAIR, PERFECT LIPS. the faint image of a pretty girl burned into the back of his mind. in there, there were all sorts of things that she did which replayed over and over like a long movie film that was left to stream.

the very first scene that played in his mind is the girl sitting across, seemingly writing or drawing. either way, she held a pencil and was writing down in a workbook. she was teaching, it seems. next was a blurry scene of her waving through a crowd, a big and encouraging smile spread across her cheeks to make the day brighter than it already is.

there were many more that kept playing in rayne ames' head, but the one that kept rewinding over and over is when the girl was tearing up with patches of blood that stained her cheeks. simple tears that silently flowed down her cheeks.

somehow, that specific memory lingered around longer than the other. there was this numbness that clenched around rayne's chest and he didn't know the reason to that. he didn't know the reason for anything at all.

hell, he doesn't even know who the girl is.

that is the confusing part about everything. he is dreaming and recalling visions of a girl he doesn't know and doesn't even remember even interacting with her at all. all of a sudden when he woke up, he was already crowded with memories of that girl.

y/n. y/n. y/n.

her name, y/n. that was all he managed to put at the front of his head. only her name. not even her surname or a nickname nor does any knowledge about her come to mind. who is this mysterious girl that just decided to appear in his mind?

the more rayne thinks about her, the more he feels incredibly disturbed. he lays in the hospital bed at this moment, looking out the window at the perfectly bright blue sky, wishing the heavens would tell him exactly who this y/n is. he wants to know who she is, or who she was. but with one leg that is to remain numb and sore for quite some time, he doubts he would ever find anything about this y/n.

what can a crippled teenage boy possibly do? the half-blonde can only sit back and keep his mind going like a workshop to invent something about the mysterious girl that lives rent-free in his mind.

through and through for living in this hospital for a few weeks, he has heard at least the name y/n three or four times. it was only a limited number of mentions of her name, but it was enough to drive the ames curious and at the same time, insane. everytime he asks someone about the name mentioned, they would always reply with a “she's only a schoolmate of yours.”

nothing less, nothing more. only a schoolmate.

“finn, who is y/n?” he asked his brother who is currently paying him a visit. that same name that kept ringing in rayne's ears with the image of an unknown, pretty girl. he wants to know if finn knows this y/n too, or if any images pop up in his mind. rayne wants to know.

“rayne, you must remember her. by yourself,” finn replied.

what does the younger ames mean by that? how is rayne going to remember this y/n girl if no one is going to tell him? the more people that dodged his questions, the more he feels like a portion of his nerves gets set on fire.

why in the world is nobody going to tell rayne ames who the hell y/n is?

rayne is starting to get angry at the lack of understanding as many more images of the girl flood his mind. all alone, he clenched his fists and pursed his lips tightly together, in a state where he is angry at himself for not remembering. guilt gathered all around him where they rested heavy on his shoulders. the guilt of not remembering a soul that should be remembered.

thus he forced himself to sleep. maybe then he'll remember something about her. whatever the case might be, rayne is sure that he didn't want to open his eyes and meet the sunlight of the world anymore because he is now in a world of darkness.

“rayne…? you're not supposed to be here! not so soon…” the familiar voice of a girl rang as darkness ceased to visible brightness. and there she is. y/n. could this be another memory?

“go back, rayne,” she said. the said male couldn't quite understand the tone in her voice. it sounded like she didn't want to leave him alone and at the same time, she demanded that he ‘go back’. whatever that could mean.

rayne held out his hand, “you're y/n… right?”

he watched her carefully. he watched how her face twisted into a frown and eventually into a face that screamed pity at the male. a smile so small and sad at the same time spreaded across her lips and it gave the elder ames a little heartbreak for not even knowing what was going on. all the girl did was give him a little nod. “please rayne, go back. you cannot be here. you must breathe and open your eyes again.”

breathe and open his eyes again? rayne felt fear. “at least! at least… allow me to hold you for a while.”

the girl immediately embraced him, sinking into his touch. she hugged him tightly as rayne wrapped his arms around her. he could feel her warmth, unlike those visions of her that he couldn't even interact with.

still, he doesn't know who she is. so here, he is simply hugging a girl that he doesn't even know. but this feels right. it feels so damn right to wrap his hands around her and to softly caress her head, maybe he'd even plant a kiss of two. but he didn't.

when she pulled away, she ran, not even allowing rayne to see her face. far enough, she glanced back at the half blonde and shot him a genuine smile this time. “we’ll meet again, rayne,” she held out her hand to wave a weak good-bye to him as the bracelet she wore shone a little.

before rayne could say anything else to the mysterious girl, she had disappeared, and light kissed the vision of rayne the moment he opened his honey eyes.

“he’s breathing!”

“it's a success!”

“oh thank heavens!”

blurriness clouded the ames' vision as he breathed into the mask, his head slowly turning to look around. everything happened in slow motion— the voices and the faces that looked down at him. last but not least, the girl in memory and her shining bracelet.

rayne ames’ golden honey eyes locked it's sights onto the silver bracelet that was wrapped around his own wrist. it has been minutes, no— hours, since he started staring at the jewelry. it was the same exact one that y/n wore before she left and before rayne opened his eyes.

he shifted his position to lay at the side where his view is facing the window to the outside world. the young man held his hand close to him, the bracelet touching his chest.

now he remembers it all.

the girl in his vision is y/n, his girlfriend. his late girlfriend who died instead of him in a bloody event where a mindless man in a car crashes into the couple. the man took away an innocent life that rayne treasured so much. and rayne couldn't even remember you at the start.

he clenched the bracelet tightly. the bracelet that he handmade for you. the bracelet that he gifted to you on the day of your anniversary of being together for six months. just right that morning before you breathed your last breath and protected rayne with all you could.

rayne could feel the numbness on his face that started to form from just thinking about it. eventually, he shut his eyes and allowed the tears to flow down. that one memory that lingered around was the last memory he has of you, where you calmly cried after losing the feeling in your body.

that was your specialty. to calmly pull things through. you were definitely better at handling things than rayne. that was what annoyed rayne so much. he couldn't even tell if you were scared or the sort at that moment. all he knew was that he was supposed to be the one shielding you, not you.

rayne felt stupid. he felt like a sore loser who allowed his girlfriend to die. he felt so weak. but what could he do? this is life, and this is his fate. he was supposed to die. but you told him to go back, to breathe again and to open his eyes. the least he could do was grant you your dying wish.

he was glad that he managed to embrace you on the brink of death.

rayne curled himself up into a ball and laid there, tears silently flowing out all night.

So my go-to move of using all my old Josie/Leliana draft work is ruined because I am apparently now cleaning those up, adding a couple pieces, and then posting them. Eventually.

That’s okay though! I have other stuff! Aaaaaand since Neve Week 2025 is coming up, I thought I’d pull out something that didn’t make it into Getting Into Trouble! So that’s below the cut.

“So, now that he’s not here…you and Rook?” Bellara asked, almost the moment they had entered her workshop.

Neve chuckled softly. She’d seen this coming, Bel was wonderful at so many things, but subtlety wasn’t among them.

She’d almost been able to feel the amusement coming off of Rook when the three of them had been in Arlathan the day before, and Bellara had said now they could solve crimes and it would be romantic. But he’d refrained from comment in an impressive, for him, exercise in self-control. Probably only achieved because Bel, unlike Davrin, hadn’t been aiming to draw a reaction out of them. She’d just been excited.

Which was very sweet.

But Neve had been certain that Bel would want more answers than that. And, now that Rook was out stirring up who knew what trouble in the Necropolis with Emmrich and Lucanis, the other woman was taking her shot.

“Yes?” Neve asked, only a slight hint of tease to her voice. “What about me and Rook?”

Neve and Rook. Speaking about them as a pair, a unit, warmed her from the inside and made her feel like she might be leaping off an insulae to her death.

“Uh….” Bellara didn’t seem to have planned a follow up, and Neve chuckled to herself quietly, but fondly.

“You two are…together, right? I mean, of course, I…is it…good? You don’t have to answer that,” came tumbling out, words running into each other as Bel spoke.

If she couldn’t talk to the other woman about this, Neve didn’t know there was anyone she could talk to about it. She and Rana were friends, after a fashion, but it was not this kind of friendship. Bellara different. They told each other most things, even when it was hard. And so she admitted, “Yes, we’re together. And…I guess that would depend on what you mean by ‘good.’”

Because it was good. It felt amazing. It was also, indisputably, crazy and a terrible idea. If she’d had had any sense at all, she should have said no. Shouldn’t have leapt in, with him.

But Rook had an endearing and irritating ability to turn all of Neve’s “no”s into “maybe”s.

She still wasn’t quite sure what to do with that.

“You…like it?” The other woman asked, seeming confused.

Neve sighed and hung her head, but smiled. “Yeah, Bel.” She admitted, looking up to meet the other woman’s eyes. “I really do. A lot.”

Too much, she knew. Because when it all went wrong, as it was almost guaranteed to do, it would hurt that much more.

Bellara grinned. “That’s great!”

Neve chuckled, but glanced away. Great? Sure. A great way to break her own heart, maybe. “Yeah.”

The other woman’s brow furrowed. “Is it…not great?”

With a long exhale as she thought, Neve looked down at her hands where they were folded over her notes. “I don’t know, Bel. He’s…he’s Rook. I feel like I’ve known him my entire life. And he’s always there for me. Charming, sweet…”

Safe. Rook was her safe place. But Neve couldn’t say that aloud.

Because that would make it real. And it would hurt all the worse when she lost it. Him.

oughhhh i still need to play great god grove i Love smile for me i have a jerafina mii on my tomodachi life island maybe ill show her off soon

this one is really tricky but in a very refreshing way all of the tinkering with this comes not from trying to represent anything abstract like fur or markings or anything but from trying to fill in the gaps left in the part variety in mii maker. like theres no very good geometric eyes like that and there isnt really anything close to a smile with a tooth gap. i spent the better part of an hour tinkering with this one and im still bouncing around some ideas

theres a lot going on here and basically every feature went through some drafts. i used the generic open mouthed smile but i used the like goatee mustache to make the tooth gap. ive used mustaches to alter mouths to have fangs and stuff before its a trick im very familiar with but i think this is the first time ive ever used it to make a tooth gap!! most of the work went into workshopping the eyes. the basic parts used here are the thick rectangle eyebrows and the flat closed eyes rotated and wedged together. at first i made them point down like the closed eye in the reference i used but the wiki says hes the god of love and mirth and i figured he looked too sad for someone so wonderful so i made them point up. looking through a lot of his sprites too it looks like "glowing eye pointing up" is more important than "closed eye pointing down" to his design and since winks are nearly impossible in base mii maker i figured i should prioritize the open eye as far as positioning goes. i also used the eyeshadow to try and draw more attention to the eyes even though it feels a little backwards to make the eyes darker to represent bright glowing. you know what would make this all easier though??

using a completely different reference that doesnt involve the wink at all!! whats easier than closing one eye if not closing both!!! i like these both quite a lot and im proud of the end result. even if it did take me like an hour to get here. ive given qr codes to both of them because i really do think its a toss up if one is better than the other i think its just a matter of personal preference

AND my great god grove friend approves so i feel ive done a good job. enjoy your great god!
