Fixing Sharp Edges

(or a tutorial on how to edit the AlphaMaskThreshold)

This problem most commonly applies to textures on a flat mesh like rugs and wall decals. You make this wonderfully detailed texture, but when you open the object in-game the edges are pixelated and don't look how you intended.

This little guide assumes that your object already allows for transparency, if you need help with that this tutorial on the S4S forum is a good place to start. If you are editing a rug then it should be good to go. I'll be using @kirsicca's paint splashes as an example here since 1. I wrote this primarily for her (😘) and 2. it shows changes in threshold well.

1.) The first few steps depend on the type of mesh/object you are working with. Click on the Warehouse tab, then click either Model LOD 00000000 or Model 00000000 if you don't have that option.

2.) (Skip to step 5 if you have Model LOD 00000000) If you had to click Model 00000000 instead of the LOD, click the Data tab then click the Edit Items... button under Key -> Lods

3.) A new window will pop up. Make sure HighDetail Flags is the option selected on the left panel (it will be by default) then click Edit Items... under Model -> Resource -> Key -> Meshes

4.) Another new window will pop up. Scroll around halfway down until you see Material -> Resource -> Entries. Click the Edit Items... button next to Entries. Another new window will pop up, which is when the beginning steps dovetail. Go to step 7.

5.) (Start here if you have Model LOD 00000000) Click the Data tab, then click Edit Items... under Key -> Meshes

6.) (Only if you have Model LOD 00000000) Select either Phong or PhongAlpha on the left panel. Scroll around halfway down until you see Material -> Resource -> Entries. Click the Edit Items... button next to Entries and a new window will pop up.

7.) Now we're in the same place! Each VariantId you see is a different swatch. If you know you want to adjust transparency it is best to do this process before adding new swatches to save time. Let's start with the first swatch - Click on VariantId: set1-materialvariant, StateId: Default in the left panel. On the right side, click Edit Items... under Material -> Resource -> Material

8.) A new window will pop up. We're looking for AlphaMaskThreshold. This value tells The Sims which pixels in a texture should be shown and which ones should be transparent.

What does this number mean? The value can range from 1 to 255. The default is 128, which means anything less than 50% opacity will not be shown. Here is an example of what this looks like in practice using @kirsicca's texture. White are visible pixels, black are hidden.

1 and 255 are only there for reference; you generally don't want to select 1 because your texture can appear black where it thinks pixels should be, and 255 will hide most of your texture.

Once you change the value in Sims4Studio, click save on the window that popped up. From there, edit the value for each swatch (VariantId) and save everything then test it in game. If you are editing a rug, they don't get "burnt" because they turn to ash so you can skip those states.

Reading the garage scenes in APV made me curious if you have any other thoughts about how garages as a whole work in the AC6-verse (or more specifically APV). How do they vary from case-to-case, e.g. how would a corp garage look different from say, and RLF or independent merc garage? Do certain engineers have specific parts/frames they like working on compared to others?

Corporate Garages:

The level of size and sophistication is largely dependant on how big the corporation is, but on a whole they're very sleek and professional and choking in red tape. The engineers normally take on the lion share of the paperwork, but every single nut and bolt has to be accounted for with the repairs, and it's a pain to order said nuts and bolts.

They're bound by strict policies as well (example: you will only replace parts that are considered totally unusable contrasting with another corporation's that's like "you will replace any parts that so much have a scuff on them", bc its largely dependant on what they mainly do. Are their ACs solely used for clandestine ops against other corpos? Then they're gonna nickle and dime the parts. Are they used as public advertisement for how cool and shiny they look? Then they're gonna ensure its pristine the moment it steps out of the garage doors, etc). Everything is standardised, and everyone is taught to adhere to the policies right down to the letter, unless you wanna skip out on that much needed promotion...

Tl;dr, corpo garages are well maintained and have stacks of documentation and safety policies in place, but it can also be byzantine in requesting parts as you have to basically fistfight the budgeting department to release the funds for these very expensive AC parts.

(This also means corpo garages have a very cookie cutter look to them. They all look the same no matter what planet you're on, no matter what corporation they are. The only difference between them is the company logo plastered on the walls...)

RLF Garages:

They like to repurpose old garages that survived the Fires, as the infrastructure is already there, but they can also make do with old airplane hangers or industrial warehouses in a pinch. They're generally safety hazards, as everything is tied together with tape and prayers, but the RLF is very good at jury-rigging anything that needs jury-rigging and approximating any tech they need with whatever they have on hand.

At a glance, their garages do look like chaotic death traps, but they also have a level of standardisation in terms of how they carry out repairs. They're better at patching up using old scrap metal and cannibalising destroyed MTs/ACs rather than getting new parts wholesale, so in comparison to the PCA or the corpos, their MTs and ACs have a Mad Max vibe to them lmao

They're very resourceful, in short, and they always get the results they want, even if it's not pretty getting there.

Independent Mercenary Garages:

This entirely depends on how successful the mercenary is. If they're like 621, then their garage is pretty high quality. Walter ensured to take over an old existing garage that RaD identified and refurbished for him. Other independent mercs, however, tend to use whatever they can get their hands on.

Sometimes they find an old garage a corpo abandoned for whatever reason and try to use whatever existing infrastructure is there, other times they bribe the locals who just want money or supplies to survive for ideal locations - or they even cut a deal with RaD to use one of their many garages (and half the time they end up in RaD's chopshops if they're too slow or stingy in their "rent"). On Rubicon itself, though, ALLMIND offers usage of her own garages which are manned entirely by drones, and this is to her benefit of gathering data and tracking the independent mercs operating on the planet. If they ever become inconvenient, oop, into her chopshop you go...

It's why independent mercs are so insane about ensuring they get big payouts for their work. Being independent is expensive, because you have to source your own parts, pay for an independent engineer to fix your shit, find a place to do said repair and maintenance, buy your ammo, buy your fuel... with corporations this is all subsidies to a degree, but an independent? Nah, you're on your own, kid.

Engineer Preferences:

They do have preferences! This is mostly because most "professional" engineers are trained by corporations, and normally in that corporation's preferred brand. So, an Arquebus engineer, for example, will only really know how to handle Arquebus and its subsidaries' parts, and would be far less confident in handling Balam parts.

I hc that corporations tend to try and install a "quirk" into their parts so that you need specialised engineer knowledge on how to properly install it onto your AC. Therefore, engineers that have cross-brand experience and knowledge are in high demand and can rake in quite a lot of money in helping AC pilots "mix-and-match" rival parts onto their ACs, and ensuring they synergise rather than act against each other.

Hilariously this means RLF engineers would be in high demand in the solar system, because they know the ins and outs of almost every single corporate AC brand and how to frankenstien them together. Them and RaD, truthfully.

Fixing Broken CC - Step by Step

I've noticed that over the years, CC I loved in the past get left, well, in the past. Build essentials and item go-tos get destroyed by updates and the modders who made them never return. So I have compiled a guide to get your broken cc back up and running. Software to install: Sims 4 Studio (S4S) [windows] [mac] Believe it or not, but at least half of the issues I have ever faced could could be solved by s4s. Right up at the top bar is a menu item called "Content Management" > Batch Fixes. This is your best friend.

Most any batch that broke CC can be quickly (do note that if you have a lot of cc, the word "quickly" should be changed to "slowly but automatically") fixed for you. Once the script has finished updating your CC, you will get to see what CC updated, what cc could not be updated, and what CC did not need to be fixed by the script. But what if it didn't help? What if you're like me, with an adorable music box CC item that still has the option "Listen to..." instead of "Play", rendering it useless? What then? Since you have downloaded (and hopefully ran) S4S at least once, you should have a sims4studio folder in your DOCUMENTS folder on your computer.

Inside of this folder, you're going to click on "Mods" and drag and drop the CC item that you want to edit

Now you are going to want to go to S4S and select Object Override. (click on the word "Object" to proceed).

In the drop downs section, find "Content" and select "Custom". If you do not see your custom content, close and reopen S4S.

Save the package file somewhere where you will be able to find it later. I choose my downloads folder. Give it a name (I choose the items original name then add "- Edited"). Once it is saved, you will be on an overwhelming screen. Ignore it. At the top, you will see two options: Studio and Warehouse. Select Warehouse then go a little higher to where it says "Tools". Select Extract Tuning...

What we are going to do from here is rip the working parts off of a base game EA item. In my case, I will be ripping the functionality off of an EA stereo. Almost any item you would be fixing would be under the naming convention "object/object_[item name]". in the top bar, type that.

Pick anything that will work. In my case, that would be the highlighted item. After you have selected the item from the list, click "Add to current Package". and close the window. Now towards the bottom of that Warehouse tab, you should see something called "Object Tuning". For me, it is the second to the bottom.

When you click on it, you get two tabs on the right-hand side: XML and Data.

--OPTIONAL SECTION--

In XML, you can change some interesting things. In my case, I want to change "Trigger_random_state" which controls what radio stations get selected when you click turn on > random in game.

Personally, I don't want my music box playing anything by Lullabies, Classical, and Baroque, even when randomly playing music. If you scroll down a bit to "client states, you can find a list of every radio station.

For my example of only letting a music box play Classical, Lullabies, and Baroque, I will delete everything from "client_states" except those options (keep stereochannel_off and stereochannel_randomPick).

Make sure to keep every <u> and </u> as well as the </L> at the end. Now you can copy the stations you kept and go up to the random section from before.

You might notice that the random section has n="state_value" where our added items all have n="key". We will want to fix that.

Delete our "off" and "randomPick" options then delete the preexisting options in the trigger_random_state.

--EXIT OPTIONAL SECTION-- Now that your item does what you want it to do and you have (optionally) deleted functionality that you don't want the item to have, you should be able to mess with the "Data" tab.

Change the "Name" section to [your name]:[object name]. Once you click off of that box (or hit enter), you will see that the TuningId becomes a lot longer.

Go to the "Object Definition" file from the right side of your screen.

In there you will see Tuning and Tuning ID. Copy the name you just wrote in Object Tuning > Data to the Tuning box and the TuningId from Object Tuning > Data to the other TuningId. (TuningId might autofill for you. Just copy and paste anyway to be sure).

Now you should be able to save this file and move it back into your Sims 4 mods folder. --RESULTS-- The white, unedited music box still has the old (and broken) "Listen to" function.

However, our edited music box now has the working "Turn on" function.

[AUTHORS NOTE: I accidentally deleted the 'Sims Data' file in S4S, so the 'Put in inventory' option did not show up in screenshots. If you follow my directions to a T and do not accidentally delete "pointless files", you should see all of the options.]

And even better, now the music box can only play the three stations that we wanted it to in the optional section.

--FINAL NOTES-- Let's say you're like me. You have a couple of music boxes that need to be fixed. Going through all of these steps all over again is more hassle than its word. That's where the "Import" and "Export buttons come into handy. On BOTH the Object Tuning and Sims Data XML files you have on the object you have JUST EDITED, click the "Export" button and save the xml files as somethings like "Music Box Object Tuning" and "Music Box Sim Data".

Once you have exported both files, begin the first steps two of this process (Object > Override then selecting the item you wish to override). At the bottom of the Workshop page. you will see an "Add" button. Click on it, then add an Object Tuning and a Sim Data file.

Once you have both, they will look like this and be completely empty.

Now go ahead and click the import button (right next to the export button we used earlier) and import the tuning xml and the data xml into their appropriate files in S4S. If you go to Object Tuning > Data, you will see that the name of the tuning stayed the same BUT THE TUNING ID DID NOT. Once these items have been added, go ahead and update the Object Definition and use the "save" button in the bottom right corner. Now all you have to do is click and drag this file into your mods folder! Happy Simming!

Detecting AI-generated research papers through "tortured phrases"

So, a recent paper found and discusses a new way to figure out if a "research paper" is, in fact, phony AI-generated nonsense. How, you may ask? The same way teachers and professors detect if you just copied your paper from online and threw a thesaurus at it!

It looks for “tortured phrases”; that is, phrases which resemble standard field-specific jargon, but seemingly mangled by a thesaurus. Here's some examples (transcript below the cut):

Over the past three years, Russia has waged an increasingly brazen campaign of sabotage and subversion against Ukraine’s European allies. In 2024, Moscow significantly escalated its tactics—turning to assassination, compromising water facilities across several European countries, and targeting civil aviation.

Just this week, Duma member Alexander Kazakov claimed Russian sabotage in the Baltic Sea was part of a military operation aimed at provoking NATO and enlarging Russia’s control over the area. While events such as the cutting of undersea cables have garnered substantial media attention, no systematic effort has been made to assess the full scope and nature of Russia’s actions against Europe. Analysis from Leiden University exposes how far Russia is willing to go to weaken its European adversaries and isolate Ukraine from vital support. It paints a chilling picture of the potential for Russian escalation below the nuclear threshold—and underlines the need for a concerted and assertive European response, which has been lacking so far.

Amid increasing doubts over the United States’ continued willingness to guarantee European security and provide military aid to Ukraine, as well as escalating Russian attacks, Europe cannot afford to dither on increasing its own military capabilities.

Based on an overview of Russian operations in the physical domain, excluding most cyber operations, Leiden University’s research highlights how Moscow is increasingly escalating beyond its long-standing campaigns of espionage and digital disruption. Even using a conservative metric for attribution, Russian operations against Europe have surged from 6 in 2022 to 13 in 2023 and 44 in 2024. Most of these incidents involve preparations for sabotage. Targets have ranged from critical undersea energy and communications infrastructure in the North and Baltic seas to military bases, warehouses, and armaments plants. Another common Russian tactic has been influence operations that target European politicians to erode political support for Ukraine, both at the European Union and national levels. A key example is the Voice of Europe scandal, which centered on a radical news site that became a tool for the Kremlin to platform Russia-friendly content and funnel money to pro-Russian politicians in various European countries.

Alongside these more sophisticated measures, there have been numerous acts of vandalism seemingly designed to sow confusion and disrupt daily life. This suggests a dual operational approach, combining actions carried out by opportunistic criminals recruited via platforms like Telegram with plots by operatives linked to state agencies such as the GRU.

In 2024, Russian operations against Europe sharply intensified, both in frequency and scope. In addition to an uptick in sabotage efforts, Moscow expanded its tactics to include targeted assassinations, killing a pilot who defected, targeting the CEO of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, and enlisting a Polish national in a plot to kill Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The escalation also included more indiscriminate acts of violence, such as placing incendiary devices on DHL flights—which would have caused catastrophes if they had detonated mid-air. Instead, they went off in storage facilities in the United Kingdom and Germany shortly before or after being transported by air. Some Western security officials now suspect these operations were rehearsals for future attacks on U.S.-bound airliners, meaning that Russia has effectively escalated to acts of state-directed terrorism. The threat to civil aviation is further exacerbated by a growing number of GPS-jamming incidents along Russia’s western border, as well as drone incursions over civilian airports. Moscow’s blatant disregard for civilian life and its involvement in shooting down commercial airliners (such as a Malaysia Airlines flight in 2014 and an Azerbaijan Airlines flight in December 2024) underscore the very real dangers that these operations pose to air travel over Europe.

To fully understand the qualitative escalation of Russian operations against Europe in 2024, though, it’s important to consider a broader range of incidents. Terrorism, or the use of deadly violence for political ends, extended beyond the attacks on DHL flights. Arguably, it also includes the Moscow-directed plots that materialized last year, when schools in Slovakia and the Czech Republic received more than a thousand bomb threats that lead to several days of closures. Finally, a range of break-ins at water treatment plants raise the specter of sabotage operations capable of causing truly widespread harm to the physical safety of Europe’s citizens. That such potential is anything but theoretical was demonstrated by the Swedish authorities recommending that affected residents boil their drinking water. Taken together, these activities mark a troubling new phase in Russian tactics against Europe that directly threatens the lives of its inhabitants.

Attributing intent to covert operations is notoriously difficult, but Russia appears to be pursuing two primary goals: first, undermining the willingness of Europe’s politicians and citizens to continue providing military aid to Ukraine; second, to signal the extent to which it is willing to escalate in pursuit of this aim. While Russia’s operations to date have caused significant concern, the actual damage inflicted has been relatively limited. The greater danger lies in the level of violence and disruption that the Kremlin appears willing to use in the future.

In discussions of what quantity or quality of aid to Ukraine could trigger a Russian red line and provoke escalation, the focus has largely been on the threat of nuclear weapons. However, Leiden University’s analysis suggests that escalation is more likely to occur below the nuclear threshold—and offers a glimpse of what that might entail: bombings of civilian airlines, sabotage of undersea infrastructure that could leave large portions of Europe without power or internet access, targeted assassinations of key industrial leaders, and attacks on water supplies that could jeopardize the health of hundreds of thousands of Europeans. There are also downstream effects to reckon with; as European security services pivot toward countering state-based threats, counterterrorism coverage is likely to suffer, potentially providing opportunities for nonstate actors, such as Islamic State, to strike. Clearly, addressing Russia’s increasingly aggressive stance toward Europe will require a multifaceted response.

In December 2024, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned that Europeans must “shift to a wartime mindset.” For a continent long accustomed to peace, this will be a difficult but necessary adjustment—not only due to Ukraine’s slow but steady loss of territory to Russia, but also because the incoming U.S. administration, under President-elect Donald Trump, has signaled a reluctance to further arm Ukraine and openly threatened to abandon NATO allies that fail to meet their defense obligations.

Despite the urgency of the situation—and the data reveals that Germany and France are emerging as the most targeted countries—Europe’s attention appears divided. Key powers like Germany and France are preoccupied with economic downturns, budget deficits, and rising political turmoil, undercutting their ability to significantly ramp up their commitments to Ukraine. The United Kingdom, Europe’s other major military power, is facing significant cuts on defense spending, despite the worsening international security situation. In Romania, a pro-Russian candidate recently won the first round of the presidential election (although it has now been annulled). Writing from the Netherlands, the news cycle has, for months, been dominated by the twists and turns of an unstable coalition government that seems focused primarily on domestic affairs.

After three years of escalating Russian aggression, the threat that Europe faces is broadly acknowledged. Yet, many European politicians still seem hesitant to take the necessary steps to address it, perhaps wary of voter backlash when difficult decisions need to be made on financing increased military expenditure. For their part, many voters appear to want a reorientation on domestic matters over international ones, taking a “first us, then them” approach as a recent Dutch study summarized.

Yet, if Europe does not recalibrate its priorities and respond with unity and commitment, the consequences could be dire—not only for Ukraine, but for the continent’s longer-term security and its place in the NATO alliance.

To shore up Europe’s security, a more assertive posture toward Russian operations is needed. The Finnish authorities’ decision to board and detain a cargo ship suspected of damaging an undersea cable last December and NATO’s decision to strengthen its naval presence in the Baltic Sea are positive signs in this regard. More fundamentally, Europe needs to define its own red lines in response to Moscow’s provocations. So far, discussions around escalation risks have largely been reactive, focused on the type of Western aid to Ukraine that could trigger a Russian response, rather than the establishment of clear thresholds for European retaliatory measures. These could include further sanctions or the appropriation of frozen Russian assets, as well as the delivery of additional weapon systems to Ukraine and even the establishment of a no-fly zone over the country. A publicly communicated commitment to retaliate against sabotage, supported by a credible threat, could provide deterrent capabilities that are currently lacking.

As part of this more assertive posture, Europe will need to invest in strengthening its intelligence services—both to maximize their ability to deal with the heightened Russian threat and to maintain a high level of counterterrorism capability toward nonstate extremists, such as the Islamic State. In the longer term, Europe must finally make serious and concerted efforts to reinvigorate its own armament industry, which is crucial to maintaining an ability to supply Ukraine regardless of U.S. foreign-policy priorities, as well as autonomously safeguarding the security on which the continent’s prosperity ultimately depends. None of this will come about easily, especially in a continent infamous for its inability to organize its own collective security. But the stakes are high and extend beyond the need to support Ukraine and ward off future Russian aggression. Essentially, the question is whether Europe’s liberal democracies can withstand the pressures of autocratic revanchism, or whether their ideals will falter under an inability to safeguard them through military means. With democracy under threat worldwide, Europe cannot afford to waver in the face of Russia’s imperialist ambitions.

Kibi's purpose was to be a military robot(in a future where robots are very commonplace) specifically to serve in the [REDACTED] airforce.

Before she was to be shipped out to her post, a group of robot-rights-and-freedom activists broke into her warehouse and kidnapped liberated her. When they brought her back to their base, before booting her up, they installed a sort of 'dampening' software(or virus i suppose) that would suppress the memories of her military training, so that she can live a normal life like the more carefree pedestrian robot girls that reside in the outskirts of town.

Named 'Kibi' because the number printed on her jaw is 1024.

She is wistful and, despite her lack of traditional facial features, seems to have a longing stare that pierces through you. She yearns for something unknown, to understand something she is incapable of knowing(remembering). Feels like there is something within her, hiding away, and she seeks to find answers.

Shes pretty quiet and reserved with a kind heart but she often misreads social cues and facial expressions and can react "inaccurately". She is always cordial around those she meets, man or bot, and tends to be stiff and serious when meeting someone new.

In my mind she can like. Kick ass? But not consciously! For example, shes in a situation, right? Maybe someones got an emp stick pointed at her head or smth. I don’t have any idea how this works, but I wish I did. I’m still just piecing clues together.

So I guess Exhibit A would be my boss, Miguel. I do a lot of temporary contract work, which isn’t ideal, but allows me to string together rent while working on some of my own creative freelance stuff. I was hired onto this project six months ago to restructure the data management system of a small, local startup and they miscalculated the resultant shift in office space. After a series of awkward corners and at least one broom closet, they decided to just stick me in Miguel’s office. Miguel requested it actually. He figured I would be of more use working in tandem with him than I would blocking everyone’s path to the bathroom. 

I was less than pleased to look like his makeshift corner secretary, and honestly I’ve dealt with much worse, but he didn’t mind. In fact, he seemed to welcome the company. Miguel kept a tight beard and even tighter fade, always perfectly put together in what looked like one-step-below-designer business casual, with the cherry on top being the neon purple and green barefoot shoes he tended to wear to work. I would’ve been annoyed if not for the fact that he was a genuinely nice, thoughtful guy, and more than just a captivating smile. Plus, I came around on his use of a balance ball chair once I was introduced to his tight butt clad in well fitting slacks. Not that I ever really thought about him that way.

So we shared a space and had a congenial enough dynamic. We both had similar tastes in some of the experimental music scene locally and would even go out to some shows together. Also he’s a self professed menswear expert and started systemically giving my wardrobe a much needed overhaul. So I found it odd when his usual form fitting, modern pants began to lose their flair.

At one point, he chalked it up to seasonal shifts, trying out some new, looser looks for the spring. Not to mention baggier, boxier styles had been taking the place of slim fit jeans and tight shirts, at least according to him. A few times he texted me in the morning, saying he was running late because of a ‘wardrobe malfunction,’ which I never thought much of. I had come to expect him cycling through three or four outfit changes before he finally made it out. 

For a while it seemed like he might’ve just been getting the wrong fit, since he developed a habit of adjusting his crotch often, or even wincing slightly when he sat down too hard. And I had had multiple friends and partners with similar issues, so offered some tailoring tips, but he didn’t want to dwell on it.

I’ve experienced many of these obstacles firsthand. Navigating the U.S. healthcare system has been extremely difficult due to external ableism, financial struggles, frequent moves because of unstable and traumatic living situations, and a lack of access to qualified medical professionals able to manage my conditions. Some doctors even avoid providing care for disabled people, as shown in this paper, titled “‘I Am Not The Doctor For You’: Physicians’ Attitudes About Caring For People With Disabilities.“

Even after finally receiving a diagnosis, my current Primary Care Physician (the sole connector to more qualified doctors and essentially “home base” for your health struggles) is still unfamiliar with my conditions and either can’t, or won’t, provide the necessary paperwork for work or college accommodations. On top of that, I struggle to advocate for myself due to my Autism and heavy brain fog symptoms. Verbal communication is incredibly challenging, especially with a lack of support. I don’t have a caregiver. I face the medical care system alone. 

I also lack financial assistance for my disabilities, although I’m fortunate to live in my parent’s home for the time being. But that means I have to work. Right now, I work a warehouse job, which is the highest paying job I qualify for (experience only in “starter jobs”, and no further schooling than high school.). As you can imagine, it’s far from ideal for someone with a connective tissue disorder that has the power to injure me at the smallest movement.

I’ve approached multiple doctors for help securing accommodations at work to reduce the physical harm caused by my current work expectations. Each time, I’ve hit a dead end. I’m not looking for sympathy. I’m asking for understanding and change. It’s difficult with the current system to “just get accommodations”.

This isn’t about a lack of trying. It’s about a system that’s broken, unwelcoming, and too often hostile to the people who need it most.
