Star Trek Lower Decks "First First Contact" & "Dos Cerritos"

You know re-watching a clip of the Cerritos rescuing the Archimedes, (along with the Titan and Cali-class's rescues of Cerritos) reminds me why I think "First First Contact" barring the cliffhanger is the best Lower Decks finale. They're all pretty good but FFC seems the most... Star Trek of them? Also the most Lower Decks, It's non-violent, low stakes and it's the Cerritos proving that second line workhorses or not they are Starfleet to the bone and heroic.

And damn, I hope Jennifer got some kind of official recognition for saving Mariner because jumping out on an EVA to rescue her is bravery above and beyond.

Tangentially (because their romantic relationship should be based on gratitude for the above), I still really think their relationship and the coda for was done so badly. Apparently, the writers think "Jenn liked Mariner for the wrong reasons", and we were all supposed to get that from the one... C-Plot? B-Plot at best that had them together. Where the gist was more 'Jenn likes her for who she is'! Ugh.

The writer's were clearly not interested in shipping/romance, fine. So don't do it, that's fine. Don't do it and then half-arse it.

i love a good first contact day hand-kissing-with-tongue meme, don't get me wrong, but put that aside for just one post. i think that from a vulcan perspective there's something really precious about that moment, and to me, it even explains their (very vulcan) affection for humankind from then on.

yes, vulcans do sometimes touch hands in a sensual way, but when you think about sarek and amanda touching hands publicly in "babel," it's not a "public display of affection" in a get-a-room way. it's very affectionate, but it's a public display of affiliation.

i don't know, just imagine that you're the vulcans. you go investigate this warp signature, and you know these people have never met aliens before. first contact is a dangerous mission! these aliens (earthlings) could very likely just shoot you!

and so you land, and these new aliens tentatively approach. no shooting yet, so you give a formal gesture of respect. and this alien tries to mimic it... and then basically embraces you like you're a member of their family.

i think that would really endear me to this new species!

There are a lot of plausible ways that things could go if Shen Yuan met Shen Jiu when they're both grown adults, but for my money the funniest is if they just immediately start trying to maim each other.

Shen Yuan is wondering if there's some sort of mandate of the "if you meet your double you have to kill him" style in effect, but no. It's just that he's still way more pissed off about the child abuse against Binghe than he realizes, while Shen Jiu's reaction to seeing anyone who reminds him of himself is to try and destroy them. There's not a lot of thinking or finesse involved, so they basically go from zero to "rolling in the dirt trying to claw each other's eyes out" with no warning.

Been haunted by a kids interactive exhibit my sister and I went to some 25 years ago. I could remember blurry bits and pieces, even was able to find the museum that housed it. But thanks to reddit I was finally able to find proof that it existed and the name of it and I feel so free now.
