🥁Drummer!Eddie headcanons thanks entirely to THIS by @littlexdeaths and THIS by @somnambulic-thing 🥁
Because of course I have to give him a backstory…
- He was always hyper as a kid and hitting things with pencils and rulers and branches - himself, furniture, bushes, other children…
- He’d frustrate his mother (affectionately) by stealing her wooden mixing spoons and smashing them against cupboard doors, his toys, empty food boxes, and any pans he could steal from the kitchen
- She eventually started collecting things for him, like plastic tubs, paint cans, wooden boxes, and encouraged him to play them outside
- Al, unsurprisingly, wasn’t a fan, so she tried to get Eddie interested in other instruments too. It kind of worked. He’d spend hours wandering the woods near his home with a secondhand harmonica one of his mom’s friend’s husbands gave him, and a thrifted tin whistle, but he always drifted back to the feral, manic energy of bashing objects with sticks
- His middle school teachers never let him have free reign in music class, sometimes excluding him from it entirely. They wanted him to be ‘good at school stuff’ first, and saw music time as a reward. But, if they’d just let him engage in the way he needed to, they would’ve seen that he was ‘good at’ that to a level far beyond his peers. Plus, it would’ve had the added benefits of helping him manage his energy levels, and concentrate better in his other classes
- Eventually he moves in with Wayne, who finds an old acoustic guitar at a yard sale that Eddie absolutely loves. But his passion for rhythm remains, and he collects old containers, cans and pots and arranges them outside the trailer, tinkering away with them of an evening as a way of unwinding before bed
- The neighbours initially hate it, but when they notice that this kid actually has a decent sense of rhythm they start bringing him stuff to add to his set, like plastic barrels and metal oil drums
- He inadvertently becomes the locus of entertainment for the ‘park parties’ that start to happen. People join in with guitars, banjos, at least two residents have violins and someone’s friend even brings a clarinet one time. When some of the old geezers discover he plays harmonica, just like they do, they have ‘hoedown showdowns’ where they duel, and there’s much cheering from the other residents. Eddie even learns to play the spoons (he’s an annoying natural) from the old codger four trailers down, who’d barely been seen outside of his home for months at this point
- One night he and some other disaffected friends break into the High School music room, intending to do some damage, maybe even steal a few things. But when Eddie steps in, after strumming his fingers over the strings of a few instruments and plonking away on the piano as he walks past it, he spots an old, tattered drum kit at the far end. It’s red, with peeling decals, the supports are corroding and at least two of the skins have been mended with duct tape, but to Eddie’s eyes it’s the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen. It seems to emit its own light, and levitates above the ground, calling to him. He sits behind it, picking up the first decent pair of sticks he’s ever held, and starts to experimentally tap out a rhythm. He finds the foot pedal, and adds it in. Tentatively, he makes contact with the cymbals, revelling in the variety of sounds he can make. After only a matter of moments he’s practically playing a tune, and his cohorts stop their fiddling and pause to listen. One walks over, aghast, and nods his head to the beat for while before remarking, “You’re a fucking drummer, dude!”
Final quote shamelessly stolen from the documentary ‘Count Me In’ where Taylor Hawkins describes how he discovered his future vocation (if you're a drumming fan I highly recommend it).

⛏️ 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙿𝚛𝚘𝚜𝚙𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚘𝚛 🕯️
-
Late to the party, but I finally finished the ref for my TF2 oc, The Prospector! A small, scrungly, bushy dwarf man who usually is on the defense with his motion-activated mines and shotgun!
-
Ramblings and close-ups below! ⚙️
Tumblr media
💡The Prospector is my 10th class TF2 oc, specializing in defensive game modes (Capture the Intel/Point). You’ll usually find him hanging around Engineer the most, as Prospector’s motion-activated mines are perfect to snag cloaked Spies! His melee ranges from his trusty pickaxe to the iconic frying pan, and for his 3rd weapon slot, a short-ranged weapon of some sort!
Tumblr media
🕯️The Prospector’s full name is “Benedito ‘Bento’ Ribeiro”, and he originates from Ouro Preto, Brazil; a town with a mining history! He is a 45 latino man at the grand ol’ height of 5”4’ (and is teased endlessly by the other mercs about his height) :,]
Tumblr media
⛏️On the battlefield, Prospector is a competitive bastard, thrilled in the high of battle and running on pure adrenaline. His smaller height also serves as an advantage despite the other’s teasing, as you’ll usually see him skittering across the map and is often overlooked >:]
Prospector doesn’t talk as much as most mercs, but will have snarky remarks for Domination lines or light insults. Other than that, you’ll usually hear him mutter insults or swears under his breath in his native language, Portuguese.
Tumblr media
🪕Off the battlefield, Prospector is more mellow, quiet most of the times and only talks if he really has something to say. He’ll always try to appear gruff and indifferent, but he’s really an emotional bastard; easily flustered and has a soft spot for certain things (and people), such as his plants!
Prospector has a big soft spot for plants, ranging anywhere from succulents to plants from his home country (like the Walking Iris!). He’ll slowly collect all sorts of flora as a hobby, and if he’s not tending to his plants, he’ll practice music on his harmonica, or indulge in his other hobby; Lapidary!
Being a lapidarist, Prospector collects gemstones of all kinds, either from his own mining adventures or just as a collector, and will turn the gemstones into pieces of art. He has a small collection so far, creations ranging from animals to objects! Usually, a way Prospector shows his way of appreciating (or that he likes you as a mutual/friend) is leaving a hand-shaped gemstone of some kind of design in your living space!
-
Anyways, that’s all I have for now, I’m really looking forward to drawing Prospector more, potentially with other mercs! Feel free to also request seeing Prospector interacting with any specific mercs (or even other TF2 ocs!✨). Thanks for sticking around this far and reading about my TF2 blorbo! 💖

The History of Korean Male Soloists from the 20th Century: Episode 3/?
The third episode of 'The History of Korean Male Soloists from the 20th Century' highlights prominent Korean musicians who achieved fame in the early 20th century, during the period of Japanese occupation.
The historical documentation related to these artists is frequently unreliable, largely due to the fact that their contributions occurred almost a century ago, before the Korean War, leading to the loss or unavailability of essential records.
Kim Saeng Ryeo (김생려; 金生麗)
Kim Saeng-ryeo is linked to the Yonhui Professional Orchestra (연희전문사중창단), founded in 1929, as discussed in Part 3. The Yonhui College Orchestra/Quartet, led by Hyun Je-myeong (현제명), held biannual concerts from 1930 for nearly a decade, showcasing emerging talent and reflecting the changing musical tastes of the colonial era. This orchestra was instrumental in the development of musicians such as Kim Seong-tae (김성태), Lee In-beom (이인범), Kim Saeng-ryeo (김생려), and Lim Dong-hyeok (임동혁).
Numerous types of orchestras exist, and I discovered a resource that provides a comprehensive overview of each, including philharmonic, symphony, chamber, opera, string, and wind orchestras, among others. This resource will cover a variety of orchestral forms.
Tumblr media
Life and Career
Born on November 25th, 1912, in Yongbyon, North Pyongan Province, and passing away in Las Vegas on December 14th, 1995, at the age of 83, he was the only son among five siblings and married to dancer Kwon Ryeo-seong (권려성).  His father, a devout Christian and elder, introduced him to the church at an early age, fostering a particular fascination with the organ. Shortly after his birth, his father established a church in Bukcheong, where Kim Saeng-ryeo spent his formative years.
He played a crucial role in the establishment of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and was instrumental in founding the Seoul Symphony Orchestra after Korea's liberation, thereby leaving a significant mark on the country's symphonic music scene. His early life unfolded in Anju, South Pyongan Province, and Bukcheong, South Hamgyong Province. Like other key figures in the early development of Western music in Korea, such as Hyeon Je-yeong (현제명),  Lee Heung- ryeol (이흥렬), and Gye Jeong-sik (계정식), Kim was raised in a Protestant household, which provided him with early access to Western musical traditions.
From a young age, he demonstrated exceptional skill in playing both the organ and harmonica. His journey with the violin began in elementary school, where he had already shown a unique aptitude for the organ and harmonica, often playing during his free time. His passion for music persisted even after starting school, as he would occasionally leave class to visit a church and immerse himself in musical experiences.
In the second grade, his fascination with music deepened when he encountered an amateur violinist, which inspired him to take up the violin. This pivotal moment marked a significant shift in his musical journey. After completing elementary school, he moved to Seoul to pursue further education, enrolling in the second high school, now known as Gyeongbok High School (경복고등학교; 景福高等學校), where he distinguished himself as a disciplined and diligent student.
While attending Gyeongseong Jeigo High School, he received violin lessons from Boots, the wife of a foreign doctor at Severance Hospital (세브란스병원). His serious commitment to violin studies intensified after meeting Gye Kye-sik, a returnee from Germany. He continued to practice diligently at Yonhui College (연희전문학교; 延禧專門學校) and, upon graduation, took on roles as an accompanist and conductor for the Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station Orchestra (조선방송협회(朝鮮放送協會). However, during the Gwangju Student Incident https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwangju_Student_Independence_Movement (광주 학생 독립 운동; 光州學生獨立運動), he actively participated in protests, which led to his pursuit by the Japanese police and subsequent suspension from school. He was only reinstated after submitting a written account of his actions, but he continued to face challenges, particularly from his Japanese teachers, ultimately graduating under difficult circumstances.
Tumblr media
Throughout his academic evolution, his commitment to music remained steadfast. After finishing elementary school, he moved to Seoul to further his education, enrolling in Jeigobo (제이고보), now recognized as Gyeongbuk High School. His association with Kim Hyung-jun (김형준; 金亨俊), a violinist and conductor, facilitated his involvement with the Gyeongseong Central Orchestra (경성중앙관현악단; 京城中央管絃樂團) as a violinist. Upon graduating from Gyeongbuk High School, he encountered Gye Jeong-sik (계정식; 桂貞植), a returnee from Germany, who helped him strengthen his foundational skills in violin, leading to his participation as a second violinist in a string quartet directed by Gye Jeong -sik.
Despite familial opposition to his musical aspirations, he persevered and, after graduating from Gyeongbuk High School, gained admission to Yonhee College through the recommendation of Hyun Je-myeong (현 종양). There, he continued to engage in musical activities and was appointed as the second violinist in a string quartet under Gye Jeong-sik's (계정식; 桂貞植) leadership. Although he attempted to follow his father's wishes by applying to Severance Medical School, he was unsuccessful and instead enrolled in the liberal arts department at Yonhee College, where he benefited from diverse musical experiences and eventually became the head of the school band.
Under the mentorship of Hyun Je-myeong, who began his role in 1929, he collaborated with notable musicians such as Kwak Jeong- seon (곽정선), Kwak Jeong-sun (곽정선), and Kim Gwan (김관). In the early 1930s, he worked with Kim Seong-tae (김성태) (violin), Lee Yu-seon (이유선) (vocal), and Hwang Jae-gyeong (황재경) (flute) within the music department at Yonhee College, further advancing his musical skills. However, following a victorious sports match against Gyeongseong Medical School, which included Japanese students, he celebrated with the band members, leading to an incident that resulted in his indefinite suspension after being held accountable for the situation.
His time in Japan represented a transitional phase, but upon his return to Korea two years later, he re-enrolled at Yonhui College. There, he secured a position with the Gyeongseong Central Broadcasting Station Orchestra and supplemented his income by working as a violin accompanist for the prestigious Victor Records orchestra. Although he graduated in 1937, two years later than his classmates due to his studies abroad, he remained actively engaged in music, including performing violin solos during chapel services at the college.
Kim Saeng-ryeo's experience at Yeonjeon coincided with the return of Hyun Je-myeong from the United States, marking a high point for the Yeonjeon Music Club. During this vibrant period, he collaborated with notable musicians such as Kim Seong-tae, Jeong Hee-seok, Lee In-beom (이익), and Hwang Jae-gyeong. After completing his studies at Yeonjeon, he continued his career as an accompanist for both the Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station Orchestra and Victor Records.
Following the return of Hong Nan-pa (홍난파; 洪蘭坡) (April 10, 1898 – August 30, 1941) from the United States, who expanded the Gyeongseong Broadcasting Orchestra, Kim Saeng-ryeo assumed the role of conductor, fostering a strong musical partnership with Hong. During this time, he also developed a close relationship with Kim Seong-tae, visiting him to study harmony and composition. When Hong Nan-pa fell ill, Kim dedicated himself to supporting him, managing the broadcasting station's responsibilities in his absence and providing care until Hong's passing.
Hong Nan-pa's counsel became a guiding principle for him: “If you aspire to be a flower, abandon music. If you wish to be a seed that flourishes for future generations, persist in music.” This philosophy provided him with resilience and served as an enduring compass during challenging times.
Tumblr media
In the 1940s, he adopted the name Kaneyama as part of a broader national integration initiative. Following the death of Hong Nan-pa, Kim Saeng-ryeo assumed leadership of the orchestra and invited Gye Jeong -sik.to conduct. However, when the broadcasting station attempted to replace Gye-sik with a Japanese conductor, the Korean members, led by Kim Saeng-ryeo, vehemently resisted. Ultimately, when their efforts were thwarted, he chose to resign and establish a private orchestra.
He demonstrated his violin prowess at the inaugural concert of the Joseon Symphony Orchestra and at an event organized by the Joseon Music Association in 1941. That same year, he performed a solo at the "Peninsula Entire Enlistment Song Recital," which marked the introduction of the conscription system. He also participated in the "Music Patriot Weekly Music Festival" at Bumin Hall (부민관; 府民館) alongside prominent musicians. In 1942, he became the conductor of the Kyungsung/Gyeongseong Welfare Chamber Orchestra (경성후생실내악단; 京城厚生室內樂團) and joined the National Mobilization Federation of Korea/ Music Popularization Corps (國民音樂普及挺身隊) in 1943, performing at various patriotic events, including the "Battleship Donation and Patriotic Chamber Symphony Night." As the first violinist of the Kim Saeng-ryeo String Quartet and later a representative of the Hwaseong Chamber Orchestra, he continued to perform at events that celebrated the conscription system and supported pro-Japanese organizations.

In 1942-1943, he established the Husung Chamber Orchestra following his resignation from the broadcasting station, which subsequently toured across the nation. Notably, soprano Kim Cheon-ae, a founding member of the orchestra, performed "Bongseonhwa" (봉선화) during the tour, providing solace to audiences mourning their country's plight, which led to her being monitored by the Japanese authorities.
In 1944, the Husung Chamber Orchestra relocated to Xingjing, Manchuria, where its members integrated into the Xingjing Symphony Orchestra. As liberation approached in 1945, he returned to Korea at the behest of Hyun Je-myeong to reestablish the Husung Orchestra, coinciding with the country's liberation. He took on the role of conductor for the newly formed Goryeo Symphony Orchestra in 1945, having previously been an active violinist during the Japanese colonial era. Following liberation, at Hyun Je-myeong's request, Kim Saeng-ryeo mobilized efforts to assemble around 50 musicians in the fall of 1945, successfully founding the Goryeo Symphony Orchestra under conductor Gye Jeong -sik., marking the inception of Korea's first orchestra post-liberation.
Tumblr media

He subsequently departed from the Goryeo Symphony Orchestra. In 1946, he co-established the Seoul Music Club (서울음악동호회), recognized as the first chamber orchestra formed post-liberation of Korea, alongside Lee Jae-ok (이재옥), Jeong Hoon-mo (정훈모), Lee In-hyeong (이인형), Ahn Seong-gyo (안성교), Oh Byeong-do (오병도), and Jeon Bong-cho (전봉초). This initiative served as a foundation for the eventual formation of the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, where he assumed the role of conductor and later founded the Kim Saeng-ryeo Quartet in 1947, collaborating with Lee Yong-cheol (이용철), Choi Gyu-yeong (최규영), and Kim Jun-deok (김준덕). He was also a member of the Seoul Orchestra, alongside Jo Bong-deok (조봉덕), Lee Gyu-su, and Kim Soon-deok (김순덕). In 1947, he took the initiative to establish and manage the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, which was the precursor to the Seoul City Symphony Orchestra (서울시립교향악단; Seoul Philharmonic orchestra ,─市立交響樂團) founded in 1948, drawing from the Korea Symphony Orchestra (고려교향악단; 高麗交響樂團) and the Seoul Orchestra, and made his conducting debut at the inaugural concert held in February of the following year.

Kim Saeng-ryeo embarked on his professional journey as a conductor through a prestigious invitation extended by the U.S. State Department. This opportunity allowed him to immerse himself in the world of classical music, where he had the privilege of studying under some of the most esteemed maestros of the time, including the legendary Leonard Bernstein and the renowned Eugene Ormandy. These formative experiences not only honed his skills but also enriched his understanding of orchestral dynamics and interpretation. As his conducting career progressed, Kim Saeng-ryeo showcased his exceptional talent by leading prominent orchestras, such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Philharmonic. His performances on international stages garnered acclaim and recognition, establishing him as a significant figure in the global classical music scene.
Upon returning to Korea, Kim Saeng-ryeo was instrumental in founding the Seoul City Symphony Orchestra in November 1958. His vision and commitment were key in defining the orchestra's character, and he assumed the roles of permanent conductor and representative. Initially, he played as the first violinist when the orchestra commenced its activities in January of that year. The inaugural concert was conducted by Kim Seong-tae, and soon after, the orchestra began regular performances under the direction of German conductor Rolph Jacobi, who served as an advisor to the Central Broadcasting Station. However, following Jacobi's unexpected departure to Germany, Kim Saeng-ryeo took over as conductor for a concert in Daegu, marking the beginning of his conducting career.
Tumblr media
In October 1995, Kim received a distinguished invitation to conduct at the Korean Symphony Orchestra's 50th anniversary concert, he performed from a wheelchair and received enthusiastic response from the audience.
Under Kim's direction, the orchestra not only expanded its repertoire but also undertook extensive tours throughout Southeast Asia, performing in nations such as Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. These tours highlighted the orchestra's talent and promoted cultural exchange, enhancing the appreciation of classical music in the region. Kim played a crucial role in negotiating the orchestra's establishment with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, ensuring a strong foundation for its operations and performances. His dedication to the orchestra's development established it as a significant entity in Korea's cultural scene, quickly gaining popularity among audiences, who often displayed overwhelming enthusiasm during performances. Notable works conducted by him included Kim Seong-tae's "Capriccio," Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony," and Ravel's "Bolero Dance" at various concerts.
Throughout his tenure, Kim Saeng-ryeo conducted a series of notable performances that left a lasting impact on the Korean music scene. Among these were Puccini's "Tosca," which he conducted in October 1958, and the double bill of Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" and Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" in June 1959. These productions were significant not only for their artistic merit but also for their role in introducing Western operatic traditions to Korean audiences. In November of the same year, he conducted Bizet's "Carmen" at the National Theatre of Korea, further solidifying his reputation as a conductor capable of delivering powerful and emotive performances.

Despite successfully navigating numerous challenges to develop the orchestra, the onset of the Korean War compelled him to abandon his ambitions for the ensemble, leading to a three-month period of hiding under communist rule until Seoul was recaptured on September 28. Ultimately, the Seoul Symphony Orchestra was disbanded after its 23rd regular concert due to the war. At its formation, the orchestra included a wide array of musicians, featuring first and second violinists, violists, cellists, and various woodwind and brass players. Among the distinguished members were Kim Saeng-ryeo and Jo Bong-deok on first violin, alongside a diverse group of instrumentalists such as flutists, oboists, clarinettists, and trumpeters. Following the recapture of Seoul during the Second Battle of Seoul in 1950, the establishment of the Seoul Symphony Orchestra was initiated alongside the formation of the Naval Military Training Band, which served as the precursor to the Seoul Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. This endeavour marked a significant cultural development in a time of conflict.
In his role as conductor, he assembled musicians and sought support from the Navy to create the Navy Military Band. Despite the ongoing war, this ensemble was unique in its provision of employment for musicians and opportunities for music enthusiasts to enjoy performances. He maintained his leadership of the band throughout the duration of the war, ensuring its continued presence in the musical landscape.
As a founding member of the Korean Musicians Association established on November 8, 1949, he played a pivotal role in the organization of the Naval Military Music Band in October 1950, where he served as captain. Following the appointment of all 120 members of the Naval Cultural Promotion Corps as civilian naval officers, the band held its inaugural concert in November 1950 at Sigong Hall, celebrating both the Navy's fifth anniversary and the recapture of Seoul. The band, which returned to Seoul in 1953, became influential in the performance scene, showcasing significant works and ultimately evolving into the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, which was later restructured into the Seoul Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra in 1960.

Kim was appointed as the first conductor of the Seoul City Symphony Orchestra, a role he maintained until 1961. Initially optimistic about fostering a vibrant symphony orchestra movement, his ambitions were thwarted by the political turmoil surrounding the April 19 Student Revolution in 1960 and the May 16 Military Coup in 1961. These events culminated in his resignation, prompted by legal disputes involving current and former orchestra members. Nevertheless, during his tenure, Kim Saeng-ryeo actively guided the orchestra, undertaking performances both domestically and internationally, including tours throughout Southeast Asia, thereby establishing a significant foundation for the orchestral movement in Korea.
In January 1962, Kim assumed the role of director for the Yegreen Orchestra, which was founded with the guiding principle of "Remembering the Past and Yesterday for Tomorrow." By September of that year, the orchestra had successfully staged five performances of the "Chuseok Play," showcasing a variety of musical selections. After the orchestra's dissolution, the exact timing of which is uncertain, Kim established the Arirang Folk Arts Troupe, which toured extensively across the United States, Canada, Europe, and other regions, playing a vital role in the dissemination of South Korean culture.
In the same year, Kim also held several significant positions, including head of the music department at Kyunghee University, representative of the Yegreen Orchestra, and artistic member and commander of the Naval Military Music Band. His diverse engagements in these organizations, along with his role in representing the Seoul Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, highlighted his prominent influence in the South Korean music landscape during this era.

The man sitting in the middle of the front row is Hwang Un-heon (황운헌) (Chief of the Literature Department).
In 1962, he travelled to the United States to pursue studies in conducting, and by 1971, he had taken on a professorship in the Department of Music at Hanyang University. He returned to the United States in 1976, where he held the position of permanent conductor for the Southern California Philharmonic Orchestra until 1992.
In October 1995, he received a distinguished invitation to conduct at the Korean Symphony Orchestra's 50th anniversary concert, performing from a wheelchair and receiving an enthusiastic response from the audience. His impact on the Korean symphonic scene was significant; he established the Seoul Symphony Orchestra Association and the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, while also enhancing Korean music through his leadership of the Yegreen Orchestra, his role with the Arts Council, and his teaching at Kyunghee University. His achievements were acknowledged with numerous awards, including the Swedish Red Cross Medal and the Seoul City Cultural Award. Kim passed away due to diabetes-related complications at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, USA, on December 14, 1995, at the age of 83.
Activities and Achievements
Kim Saeng-ryeo's career in music began in 1939 when he served as the conductor for the Seoul Central Broadcasting Station Orchestra. He played a pivotal role in establishing several orchestras, including the Seoul Welfare Chamber Orchestra in 1942, where he was a violinist, and the Goryeo Symphony Orchestra in 1945, for which he was the founding conductor. His influence continued with the founding of the Seoul City Symphony Orchestra in 1948, where he also held the position of conductor. By 1950, he became the Permanent Conductor of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra in the United States, while also commanding the Naval Music Band (해군정훈음악대; 海軍政訓音樂隊).

Throughout his career, Kim received numerous accolades for his contributions to music. Notable awards include the Prime Minister's Cultural Medal in 1948, the Merit Award from the Swedish Red Cross in 1951, and the Seoul City Cultural Award in 1955. His international recognition was further solidified with the Greek Theatre Arts Medal in 1964 and the Republic of Korea National Academy of Arts Award in 1974, among others. These honours reflect his significant impact on the cultural landscape both in Korea and abroad.
In addition to his conducting roles, Kim was actively involved in various artistic initiatives. He conducted the Danwood Symphony Orchestra during the Bergsha Music Festival in 1953 and led the Arirang Folk Art Troupe on tours in the United States and worldwide in 1964. His collaboration with prominent orchestras, such as the Ormandy and Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1968, showcased his versatility. Notably, he celebrated the 500th regular concert of the Seoul City Symphony Orchestra in 1994, marking a significant milestone in his enduring legacy within the music community.
Seoul City Orchestra "Kim Saeng- ryeo's Reminiscence" Concert
Seoul City Orchestra "Kim Saeng-ryeo Reminiscence" Concert 11th Sejong Centre for the Performing Arts - Reporter Ryu Yun-jong
The "Emperor" of 44 years ago has been revived as today's "Emperor." The Seoul City Orchestra's regular concert, held at 7:30 PM on the 11th in the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Main Hall, will be a meaningful stage with the subtitle "Kim Saeng-ryeo Reminiscence." It is a place to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of the late Kim Saeng-ryeo, the founder of the Seoul City Orchestra, and to honor his achievements and will. In this concert, Kim Won-mo (professor at Dankook University) will be the guest conductor and Baek Nak-ho (chairman of the Korea Music Association) will perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 "Emperor."

서울시립교향악단 제 545회 정기연주회 "김생려 회상" [1996] Seoul City Symphony Orchestra 545th Regular Concert "Kim Saeng-ryeo Reminiscence" [1996]
Although it is a collaboration stage between a veteran pianist and a mid-career conductor that anyone would know by name, their meeting that day holds special meaning. In the midst of the smoke of the 1952 war, Baek Nak-ho (백낙호) performed "Emperor" with the Naval Music Band, the predecessor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Kim Saeng-ryeo in Busan, where he was a refugee. Professor Kim Won-mo (김원모) is Kim Saeng-ryeo's second son. He arranged Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 "Pathetique," which his father enjoyed conducting, as the second half of the concert.
Baek Nak-ho (백낙호) recalled, "During the three years of my refuge in Busan, I spent my time with Kim Saeng-ryeo in the Naval Music Band, and we built a friendship as seniors and juniors."
At the concert, Lim Won-sik (임원식; 林元植) (Professor Emeritus of Chugye University for the Arts), who played a leading role in the founding of the National Symphony Orchestra (now the KBS Symphony Orchestra) in 1957 and competed with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra in good faith, will share his memories of the deceased in the form of reminiscences.

I cannot hold it back any more
From a young age I've been fascinated by American frontiers, horseback heroes, mountain and wilderness and horses, guns and rifles. And I'm not even American.
There is a reason one of my favourite novels is "The Mark of Zorro" by Johnston McCulley, and my favourite religious literature is a humorous autobiography called "Cowboys Make Better Preachers" by Leo Schreven.
There is a reason why John Denver's Country Roads, Take Me Home tugs at the heartstrings every time I listen to it and sing along even though it's a very popular song. Country songs, banjo music, harmonicas and guitars too.
There is a reason why Red Dead Redemption has stolen my heart like no other game has, and why I bothered to buy this one out of all the selection of games. Hell, even go as far as buying a console to play it, something I would normally never do, not being an avid gamer.
Born and raised in a concrete jungle, nature and mountains, cows and horses, have been an endless source of fascination to me. Sitting right outside the windows of my university lecture room were the distant mountains. Boring classes would have me staring longingly at them, wishing I could sprout wings and fly.
The books, music, and the games only make this longing so much worse. And yet do they fill me with peace.
Riding in the wilderness and over mountains and hills on my loyal steed, even if it's in a game, has never felt better, never felt so relaxing and satisfying.
Something about it all is so utterly freeing to someone like me, cooped up at home and strangled by and caged in anxiety. Horses have always felt to me symbols of freedom, independence, and power; and mountains endurance and strength. All things I wish I could experience and have.
If only, one day, I could be free. Mind and body.

Listing every single musical activity I’ve done since I was a child:
-Dance (ballet, swing, hip pop, and ballroom choreography)
-Choir (aged 4-7 and 5-9 (two different choirs))
-Trombone (school (actually became good at it))
-Drums (School (I was decent))
-Tambourine (School (Sucked ass but I liked it)
-Kazoo (Cause I thought it’d be funny))
-Harmonica (Same reason as kazoo))
- Musical show theater (for school (mezzo-soprano in one song due to previous choir experiences))
-Guitar (at school and during free time (electric and acoustic))
-Bass (main instrument I practice))
(And of course my band)
Notes: In the musical I was to be soprano but I gave up my role for an international student who’s voice was 10x better then me. I was also top of my class with drums, but that’s cause they didn’t pay attention.

🛼 ⇢ describe your latest wip with five emojis: ok! good luck decoding this shit: 📍🛑🔩👁️🍫
🥑 ⇢ you accidentally killed somebody, which mutual(s) do you text for help? none of them are on here that I know of but Q and S. Maybe G depending on who...

Summary (full bio below): Lira (pronounced Lee-ruh) Scofield (26-31yo) never met her father and due to her depressed mom she was raised by her older brother, Dante. They spent most of their time with the local street punks. Lira learned to play banjo and harmonica. When she was thirteen her brother left and she cared for her mother for another three to four years before she decided to leave herself. She steals a neglected dog, Pontus, and starts living with him. Since then she's living on the streets doing street music and dealing drugs for a living. And other occasional criminal activities. Shortly she inherited her dads bar, but she doesn't like it and only uses it to sleep there sometimes.

BIO
What it means to be a child
Lira was born as a second child and first daughter to Alina and Gary Scofield. She had an older brother, Dante. When Lira was only four and Dante was ten, their mother made a shocking discovery. Seemingly their dad had been leading a double life. He was immediately thrown out of the house, never to see his wife or children again. Alina never mentioned more about their father, even as the kids got older. Dante still had some really wholesome memories about their dad and really missed him. While Lira was four, trying to fit raisins in her nostrils. Pretty soon after, her mom became sick with heavy depressions, leaving the house more seldom and slowly, after some time shifting all the responsibilities towards Dante. When Dante was only twelve years old, he had to bring his little sister everywhere with him so she wouldn't be sitting alone at home. He hated it but their sibling bond really tightened over the years, making him Liras hero, the person she looked up to the most, the person who was always right. Lira was only seven when they met some street punks on their way home. Dante and Lira felt like staying instantly. So they started hanging out with the punks, Dante making sure that Lira wasn't skipping classes at first. But with time came comfort and soon they'd be spending almost every free minute of their time with the punks. Learning to play instruments -Lira learned banjo, Dante the bass- and getting familiar with scamming people or just straight up stealing. Lira was a wonderful bait. With young years she learned to manipulate rich looking people or lure them into alleys, not really establishing a healthy moral compass for herself.
Teenage turbulence
This is where the fun started for Lira. She started drinking alcohol and smoking weed pretty early in her teenage years. Seeing all her friends as idols and inspiration, Lira would start spraying walls, over drinking on concerts and unnecessarily starting fights with people. Lira had just the biggest mouth, to yell the rudest shit because she knew she'd always have a squad behind her. So, Liras confidence began to grow. Dante managed to stay pretty humble and with the years got quieter, as opposed to Lira who got louder and more arrogant. Meanwhile, at home their mothers depression had progressed to the point where she would barely leave her bed and only sometimes spoke to them. Lira had no problem with their mom, it was all she knew. All grown ups would sooner or later end up like that in her mind. So hearing her brother continuously fight Alina always confused her. When she was thirteen Dante left. No note. No warning. One day his room was empty and Lira was alone. For a short while Lira tried looking for him, with no triumph. So she continued what he left: caring for their mother. For four years Liras life was nothing but groceries, cook, clean at day; and party, party, party at night. Soon she was slipping more and more into niche scenes way beyond your local punk squad. She continued skipping classes and ultimately failed high school. For four years she waited for something to change. For Dante to show up, her mom to get up, life to figure itself out. Until one day she disappeared as well. Just barely saying goodbye to her mother.
Now to be an opportunist
Relatively early in her travels, Lira stumbled across a group of junkies who took her in. They had a dog, a dark little puppy. And she immediately fell in love with him, taking him on walks and more and more payed for his food with her begged for or stolen money. Until one day she decided to leave again...but not without taking the puppy with her. His name is Pontus and from the moment she was with him, she knew that it was a stupid idea. But she kept him with her, him being the only responsibility she would take. And even though she didn't largely change her lifestyle, she somehow always has him walked and fed every day. Lira should never taken in another living being, but Pontus didn't seem to want it any other way, keeping up with all of her foolish behavior. He became her only friend and only reason to keep herself alive. Lira and Pontus decided to not live by society's rules. Because that's the thing Dante would have done as well. She tried having a job, a car, a trailer, a studio, but just never had the discipline to hold any of these for much too long. This pattern also showed in trying to have relationships. Lira doesn't care much about romance. At least that's what she says since she's never learned it and probably is pretty bad at it. The only things she truly cares about are Pontus, her banjo, her sleeping bag and the condition of being intoxicated. So she traveled, from state to state, once or twice even landing in New Mexico or Canada. Pontus turned out to be a big black and brown Shepard mix, and to her luck, he was friendly, way friendlier than herself. They have a general understanding with one another even if he roams the streets without her sometimes, always returning back to her though. Pontus knows how to 'flirt', steal and growl when needed. Since on the road Lira had been with train kids, street musicians, junkies, toxic lovers and acquaintances to go on concerts with. But most of the time she will spend with Pontus, since that proved to be the least trouble for her. Under the umbrella of "living life to its fullest" Lira will still pull pranks, scam people and start fights. Since she was always surrounded by substances it wouldn't be a big leap for her to slip up now and again. Some would say she's battling addiction. Lira describes it as 'just having fun wtf'. Her struggles with alcohol, speed and sometimes when she's lucky even coke have gotten out of hand several times, leaving emotionally and physically hurt people . And most of the time destroyed property and Lira with a sore voice and some bruises
Recently
Lira decided to take a look at her PO box. There was a letter in there that said that she had Inherited a bar, from Gary Scofield. Shocked and confused Lira decided to take a look at the bar her father gave her. She's barely met the guy before. And being in his bar made her uncomfortable. Which is why she barely goes there, leaves it a construction site not knowing what to do with it. Even Pontus won't like it there if they stay for too long. Sometimes when it's cold or rainy, she'll sleep on the counter.
PERSONALITY
Addict; Manipulative; Clever; Stubborn; Funny; Self loathing; Silly; Egotistical; Hurt; Driven;
From an outside perspective Lira seems uncatchable, keeping up with her is almost impossible. She is extroverted, easily distracted, almost always drunk or high, loud but somehow endearing. Having a crowd of young street punks around her from early childhood on, and being praised for all the wrong things gave her a massive ego and a fucked up moral compass. She has no problem committing crimes to live her chosen street life. And because it's fun and Lira has no concept of consequences and still tries to avoid responsibilities at all cost. The bit of moral compass she gathered over years doesn't allow her to steal from the poor though. She promised to herself to only take from people who seem like they wouldn't miss a few bucks or a car too much. Lira is very confident and stubborn and will get defensive fast. Since she's very bad at opening herself up, she resorts to manipulating, lying or gaslighting sometimes. She doesn't try to be toxic. But also doesn't try to change anything about the fact that she is. Empathy isn't her forte but she does have a surprisingly caring sweet side. Which she hates. She will feel prideful because of her upbringing among the dirtiest people in america. 'Being a punk' is a mindset for her, even though she will misconstrue some aspects of it. Since she dropped out of high school she has more street smarts than book smarts. The smartest she will be is when her addict brain is planning how to get satisfied next. She knows how to be well mannered in public but doesn't use that skill very often. The more she likes someone, the meaner her humor gets. Since Lira has been traveling so much she's seen some shit. Some awful people and places. But none of that really shook her since she's trying to live and exciting life. Or so she thinks. Of course also her most devastating experiences shaped her into the cynic she is now. She knows people well, yet will fall for the ones with the most red flags, since these are the most exciting ones!! Regarding Pontus, she doesn't get defensive anymore when people tell her she's stupid for having a dog. He gives her drive and motivation and is often the only thing that truly calms her. Pontus contributes to her overall image, letting her caring side shine through.
APPEARANCE
tall and scrawny; brown, unwashed, curly hair; casual clothes, mostly ripped, sewn and if not skin tight, her clothes are too big for her; charming smile; dimples; raggedy;
When Lira was a teen, she had colored hair, always a different infected piercing somewhere in her face, studs and patches everywhere, and I mean everywhere! As she ran from home Lira slowly realized that she didn't have the time or money to maintain that look anymore. Plus, she noticed that punk wear was sadly very impractical at times. And actively living on the streets took away her energy to style her hair, put on make up or seven belts every day. She still has some patches, studded accessorizes and pierced ears. But her hair is all grown out and messy now, she rarely wears make up and if she does it's kayal around the whole eye, and she will sew her clothes that she has until they actually fall apart. She still leans towards the 'crust punk' or 'folk punk' aesthetic but won't follow it strictly since she doesn't care that much anymore. Lira is okay with her hygiene. But being at least a little dirty is her standard.

Finding Time to Create Music: Practical Tips for Busy Musicians
Hey Tumblr fam! 🎸✨ Are you passionate about creating music but struggling to find the time? Whether you're juggling school, work, or other responsibilities, it can be tough to carve out those precious moments for your musical pursuits. But don't worry! In this post, I'll share some practical tips and tricks to help you maximize your time and make music a consistent part of your life. Let's dive in!
Analyze Your Daily Routine
Identify Hidden Time Slots: Start by tracking your daily activities for a week. Note down everything you do and see where you might have some hidden time slots. Maybe there's a half-hour before bed or a quiet morning period you can dedicate to music.
Repurpose Idle Moments: Think about the times you're waiting for something or commuting. These moments can be repurposed for brainstorming lyrics, listening to music theory podcasts, or even practicing with portable instruments.
Set Realistic Goals
Break It Down: Instead of overwhelming yourself with big goals, break them down into smaller, manageable tasks. For example, instead of "write a song," aim for "write a verse" or "compose a melody."
Use the SMART Method: Make your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This will help you stay focused and track your progress effectively.
Leverage Technology
Use Music Apps: There are tons of apps out there that can help you create music on the go. Apps like GarageBand, FL Studio Mobile, and others can turn your phone into a mini studio.
Learn Online: Use websites like YouTube, Coursera, or Skillshare to take quick lessons on music production, theory, or instrument techniques. Fit these mini-classes into your day whenever you have a few free minutes.
Create a Dedicated Music Space
Find Your Spot: It doesn't have to be a full-fledged studio. A corner of your room or a quiet space where you can set up your instruments and laptop will do. This dedicated area will help you switch into "music mode" more easily.
Minimize Distractions: Try to keep your music space free from distractions. Inform your family or roommates about your practice times to avoid interruptions, and consider using noise-cancelling headphones.
Develop a Consistent Routine
Schedule Your Music Time: Treat your music practice like any other important appointment. Schedule specific times in your calendar for music and stick to them as much as possible.
Track Your Progress: Keep a journal or use an app to log your practice sessions. This will help you stay motivated and see how far you've come.
Incorporate Music into Daily Life
Multitask Creatively: Combine music with other activities. Practice finger exercises while watching TV, brainstorm lyrics while commuting, or listen to music theory podcasts while doing household chores.
Portable Practice: Use portable instruments like a ukulele or a harmonica that you can carry with you. This way, you can practice anywhere, anytime.
Engage with the Music Community
Join Online Groups: Platforms like Reddit, Facebook, and of course, Tumblr, have vibrant communities of musicians. Join these groups to share your work, get feedback, and find inspiration.
Collaborate with Others: Look for collaboration opportunities online or locally. Working with others can provide new perspectives and keep you motivated.
Balance Structured Practice with Creative Play
Structured Practice: Dedicate specific times for focused practice where you work on techniques, scales, and theory. This builds a strong foundation for your music skills.
Creative Play: Allow time for free-form playing and experimentation. This keeps your creativity alive and can lead to unexpected breakthroughs.
Self-Care and Mindfulness
Take Care of Your Health: Your physical and mental health are crucial for creativity. Ensure you get enough rest, eat well, and exercise regularly to keep your energy levels up.
Practice Mindfulness: Techniques like meditation and deep breathing can help you manage stress and maintain focus during your music sessions.
Efficiently using your time can significantly enhance your music creation process. Implement these tips to make the most out of your available time, and remember that consistency and dedication are key. Start small, stay committed, and enjoy the journey of creating music. 🎶✨

“Why Did I Want To Be A Solo Traveller? What Are The Useful Tips For Travelling Alone”—The Most Respectable Travel Expert Rebecca Lee (李樂詩) Is Content With Her Graceful Solitude.
“In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”
Some said the most important thing in life is to enjoy uneventful simplicity. Beauty can be found in things that are unadorned and uncomplicated. I disagree and tend to support what the most respectable travel expert Rebecca Lee (李樂詩) in Hong Kong has said, “Nature had 4 seasons—spring, summer, fall and winter. Each has its own light, temperature and weather. Life is nature. So, do great things when you are young. At my age of almost 80, the beauty of life is about happiness which is not related to contributing or achieving anymore. It is about how we treat ourselves.”
Our story is a chain of experience, bitter or sweet, each one of which makes us bigger. Rebecca smiled, “My ‘quota’ has been filled. I stop travelling and adventuring. Hong Kong is my little resting corner. I found peace with myself.”
Rebecca is charming, witty, straightforward, and unpretentious. She came from a middle-class family in Central. Her father ran an ivory products shop on Queen’s Road, Central. Her schooldays were the most artistic time of her life: painting, writing, photography and playing harmonica. She laughed again, “I dreamt of travelling. I looked at the maps and told myself: I had to go here and there.
After she graduated in 1962, she found a job: artist in an advertising agency. Rebecca said, “The money earned could enable me to travel. I wrote and took photos. I published to share.” Within a few years, Rebecca was able to run her own design studio with her ex-husband Robert Lam . She sighed, “The marriage did not work well. I am glad to be a single and free person now. I don’t need a man to rectify my existence.”
Rebecca continued, “Later in life, I got the contract to take care of the inflight magazine Discovery of Cathay Pacific. I enjoyed immensely the creativity of being the art editor of such a good travel magazine. I was lucky. I got a career that I enjoyed and something that I was interested in. Following this project, I published my own magazine called Pearl Magazine. I put a strong point on the magnificent history, heritage, culture and geography of China.”
She paused, “There came a point in my life when my mind told me that enough was enough. I did not want to run a business anymore. I desired to be a full-time journeyer. So, after some years, I closed down my business and searched the world which did fill me with happy treasures. Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic oceans were learnt. Asia, Europe, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, North America and South America were studied. Experiencing different customs, traditions and artistic performances of other races helped me gain a profound appreciation about human cultures. I have become more open-minded, empathetic and thankful.”
I asked, “How do you define the meaning of money?” She replied, “Money is only a tool. Money never makes a person happy unless he or she knows how to use it correctly. I used money on travel. The real measure of our wealth is the depth of our knowledge, experience and happiness derived from the world.” I deliberately challenged, “Can we learn about a country or place by watching TV and online programs?” Rebecca pretended to frown and said, “You can but it is not good enough. Humans have 5 senses: taste, smell, vision, hearing and touch. The real world allows us to satisfy all the senses. Imagine: when you stand next to a jungle, you delightfully encounter its temperature, humidity and scent.”
I questioned, “You often travelled alone. Did you feel lonely? She laughed, “What? A ‘solo trip’ is the best thing on earth: being both physically and emotionally away from the people and the situations that we are too familiar with. Solitude is independence; and independence is the richness of self.” She chuckled, “Besides, I do not like serving others. Social interactions often come with chores which may mean extra obligations.”
I asked, “What is your advice for other solivagants?” Rebecca lowered her eyebrows, “Life can be tough. You keep only the necessary and give up the unnecessary. As a solo traveller, I cut my own hair. I need no face cream or makeup. I have only a few sets of clothes. I eat anything. My daily food can simply be a loaf of bread. I can sleep on the deck of a ship. Simplicity is making your journey with just baggage enough. Fewer possessions mean fewer distractions and as a result, you can focus on the beauty of nature surrounding you.”
My curiosity drove me to put forward my final question, “Is it safe for a lady to travel alone?” she winked humorously, “At least safe for me. You look at me. My look is universal and unisexual! It is a kind of protective camouflage!”
Rebecca concluded, “Dream is everything. You, at the end of day, are what you want yourself to be. I have finished my to-do list: I was a photographer, a writer, an editor, a businesswoman and a travel adventurer. At my age, humour and contentment are a great tonic for mind. I don’t expect or wait for anything. My happiness comes from a relationship with what I can have and enjoy that to the maximum. I don’t think I am alone in this.”    I wish I could go back in time. I wish I could tell my younger self to correct some mistakes so that I could lead a wonderfully colourful life like that of my idol Rebecca Lee. I suddenly think of a song “When I’m 80”!

William Eugene Townes (March 24, 1933 – January 29, 2023)
He knew not just the names of cashiers, DMV clerks, and waitresses but also the names of their children, grandchildren, and pets. He could lay his hands on a twenty-five-year-old extended warranty in 15 seconds flat and grow enough vegetables in a weed-free backyard garden patch to keep his family in produce for a year. He thought nothing of raking and mowing a nearby widow's yard for twelve years so she could stay in her family home. Though busy with church ministry, a home business, and graduate work, he had time to read the Bible and pray with his family at breakfast each day and to join his children in their backyard basketball games after school. Throughout his retirement he treated every family member with a "Happy Birthday to You" solo on his harmonica and thrilled his grandchildren with rides on his red Suzuki motorcycle.
He was William Eugene (Gene) Townes: a hardworking, meticulous, generous, compassionate, loving, humble, faithful servant of God. Born on March 24, 1933, in Augusta, Georgia, he was the beloved husband of now-deceased Marian Rice for 64 years, father of Suzanne (Paul) Hamilton, Sara (Joe) Brazeal, Marcellyn (Bill) Reagan, and Bill (DeAnna) Townes, grandfather of 17 and great grandfather of 17.
He could lavish his love on others because the great love of his life, the Lord Jesus Christ, transformed him at the age of sixteen. While teaching a ninth-grade Sunday school class on Romans 10:9-10, God opened his spiritual eyes, causing him to see that he himself had never been saved. At that moment he put his faith and trust in Christ alone, and the trajectory of his life changed. Gone was the desire to become an FBI agent. Instead he enrolled at Bob Jones University, graduating cum laude in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, marrying Marian Rice that same year. Upon graduation, he taught Greek as a graduate assistant at BJU while earning his teacher certification.
In 1955 Gene and Marian worked for nine months as missionary interns at Inter-City Baptist Church (ICBC) in Allen Park, Michigan. On May 4, 1956, he was ordained by ICBC. Soon raising full support, they traveled by steamship to Brussels, Belgium in 1957, where they completed language school. In 1960 they traveled to the Belgium Congo, proclaiming the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ there and then in the Central African Republic until 1972 – communicating in French and the African languages of Lingala and Sango.
At that time he transitioned into full-time ministry at Inter-City Baptist Church first as principal and teacher in the Christian school and then as associate pastor until 1998, where he was respected and loved. Among dozens of roles across his decades of service-from Christian education director to vehicle maintenance man to hospitality coordinator-- many will remember his daily phone calls to check on spiritual and personal welfare, his visits to homes and hospital bedsides to share genuine concern and spiritual counsel, and his weekly newsletter with Bible teaching and prayer request updates. Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of vehicles, he also helped individuals and ministries across the country acquire affordable cars, trucks and vans from a local auto auction.
A lifetime student of the word of God, Pastor Townes was awarded the Master of Divinity degree from Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary in Allen Park, MI on May 13, 1983. Ten years later he completed the Doctor of Ministry degree from the Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Minneapolis, MN.
After his retirement, he continued working part-time at Inter-City, teaching Sunday school, visiting, and conducting funerals until December of 2019. Following the death of Marian on February 3, 2020, Pastor Townes moved to be near family in Ohio, where he ended his earthly pilgrimage, faithfully praying for each member of his family and for many others each day, despite many illnesses. The example he left his family, his friends, his care team, and his "chance" acquaintances was "follow me even as I follow Christ." He fulfilled the pledge of surrender he made to Christ during his college days: "I'll go. I'll do. I'll be."

There are TONS of cheap instruments, and teaching yourself to read sheet music and how to play is easy with youtube! Harmonicas cost less than $10 dollars, and I paid about $20 for my ukulele. there's tons of free music online as well.
Go dancing! Like ballroom, swing, or salsa dancing. Cover charge is generally only a couple bucks and often includes a free lesson at the beginning. Lots of people host their own dances at churches, community centers or their own living room, that you can go to for free once you've made a few friends. Or get your own group of friends together and start your own ballroom dance club, you can learn from youtube!
There are so many traditional hobbies that are basically free when you look past the hobby-lobby starter kits and start looking into how these crafts were traditionally done, and who traditionally did them (aka, it wasn't the rich who did the spinning or cooking or landscaping) while a spinning wheel costs a pretty penny, a drop spindle can be made easily at home. You might not be able to buy an expensive chop saw and router, but chisels are only a few bucks a piece and I'm sure you can get your hands on some small scrap wood pieces to carve little gnomes and chess pieces with.
There are sooooooo many community clubs. From volunteer organizations to amateur science. Most libraries offer a multitude of free events like book clubs or language classes.
The problem really isn't finding free or cheap hobbies. The problem is stopping at only one!
Every fun post on here that encourages people to have hobbies/be creative always gets an avalanche of "Some people are poor Karen" type reactions and respectfully, you're all super annoying. I've never lived above the poverty line and this is a list of hobbies I have that were cheap or entirely free:
Read books: Go to the library, lend a book from a friend
knitting, crochet, embroidery: Get some needles from the bargan store and ask around, people have leftovers from projects they'll happily give you. Thrift stores also often carry leftover fabric and other supplies. And talk about your hobby loud enough and an old lady will show up and gift you their whole collection, because there are way more old ladies with a closet full of wool than there are grandchildren who want to take up the hobby.
Origami/paper crafts: get some scrap paper and scissors, watch a youtube tutorial
walking: put on shoes open door
pilates/yoga/etc: get a mat or just use your carpet, watch a youtube tutorial
Houseplants: look online for people that swap plant cuttings. There are always people giving out stuff for free to get you started. If you're nice enough you'll probably get extra
gardening: You're gonna need some space for this one of course but you can just play around with seeds and cuttings from your grocery vegetables.
aquarium keeping is a bit of an obscure one but I got most of my stuff second hand for cheap or free and now I have a few thousand euro worth of material and plants.
drawing/art: You get very far just playing with bargan store materials. I did my entire art degree with mostly those.
writing: Rotate a cow in your head for free
cooking: again one you can make very expensive, but there are many budget recipes online for free. Look for African or Asian shops to get good rice and cheap spices.
Join a non-profit: Cities will have creative organisations who let you use woodworking machines or screen presses or laser cutters or 3D printers etc etc etc for a small fee. Some libraries also lend out materials.
candle making: You need some molds (cheap), wick, two old cooking pots for au bain marie melting and a ton of scrap candles, ask people to keep them aside for you.
a herbarium, flower pressing: Leaves are free, wildflowers too, ask if you can take from peoples gardens.
puzzles: thrift stores, your grandma probably
Citizen science: look for projects in your area or get the iNaturalist app
And lastly and most importantly: Share! Share your supllies, share your knowledge. Surround yourself with other creative people and before you know it someone will give you a pot of homemade jam and when you want to paint your kabinet someone will have leftover paint in just the right color and you can give them a homemade candle in return and everyone is having fun and building skills and friendships and not a cent is exchanged. We have always lived like this, it's what humans are build to do.
And all of it sure beats sitting behind a computer going "No stranger, I refuse to let myself have a good time."
Anyway I'm logging off bc I'm making some badges for a friend who cooked for me and then I'm going to fix some holes in everyones clothes.
