#if you speak one of the 13 or so available languages and you use duo premium#wait until its on sale for $160 and get a babbel lifetime subscription#im using it to study dutch#but i usually use it for polish#and i practice my weak skills in french (speaking)#it doesnt have many languages but a lifetime subscription to good language lessons#plus the vocab saving feature#is worth it if you are learning one of their languages and you still want a lot of structure and guidance#its a bit of an adjustment to lose the gamification but im so happy i switched#plus one purchase for LIFETIME ACCESS?? if you wait till its on sale its only $160 which is a lot of money#but if you can afford it and you are interested the value really is there#well it has some shortcomings. you can also get a subscription to one or all languages#but lifetime is ALL THEIR LANGUAGES#there are also free services which i still think outperform duolingo but you have to mix and match#one of the selling points of duolingo is that its an all in one service#in theory. really you need to do outside research to get the most out of it#esp without premium#but it saves some effort being told what to do... at the price of some efficiency#since you cant tailor your experience#also advice if you want to achieve a higher level of fluency even starting from 0 in babbel#go to courses and select “the babbel language courses” which advertises a number of words and sentences#and start there#then once you have a few of the most commonly used words under your belt#once you start noticing differences in sentence structure or anything else that you dont immediately get#you know. forms of verbs or tenses or whatever#go to courses grammar and go through some of those#also . you can absolutely go out of order. pick units that interest you. Rather than use the revenue from Duolingo’s nearly 10 million paid subscribers to hire more experts to create–I cannot stress this enough–learning content that requires subject matter expertise, [CEO] von Ahn seems to believe that quantity is the top goal, and that its users deserve a flood of what even he admits could be shit. This certainly squares with my own experience of Duolingo, which employs every cheap gamification trick in the book to simply keep me in the app and push me to pay.   On LinkedIn, Duolingo’s chief engineering officer Natalie Glance shared a Slack message she wrote to the engineering team explaining how AI will fit into their work. This message features new directives such as “AI will be everywhere in our product” and “productivity expectations will rise.” Here’s my personal favorite: Start with AI for every task. No matter how small, try using an AI tool first. It won’t always be faster or better at first–but that’s how you build skill. Don’t give up if the first result is wrong. Again, these people are literally admitting AI won’t work, but are still asking engineers now laboring under heightened productivity expectations to spend their even-more-precious time managing this sub-par tech. "That's how you build skill" puts the AI tools' failing back on the user, the "have fun staying poor" of the AI world, and asks engineers to troubleshoot AI when they could instead be using their real live human skill to do the jobs they were hired for.

ZSMA:  It’s the anniversary of the series that started it all! Spanning four years, Zedaph’s Super Minecraft Adventure showcases Zed’s growth as a creator and contains countless silly moments! Farms and western villages, breakups and singing and time travel! Whether you embrace a younger Zedaph, a best build, or a favorite moment, it’s a blast from the past!
Free space: We know that Zed’s earliest series is also one that many haven’t seen, so this day is also open to anything that anyone wants to make! Get crazy with it! The only limit is your own imagination!
Day 2: Dec 3
Hermitcraft 5-6: Caves of crystal and bases galore, we’re going back in time! Featuring lovely characters such as Worm Man and Zedeath, season 5 and 6 give a lot to work with! The rise of the gaming district and the iconic Is That Sheep Looking At Me? entertained the Hermits, and our hero still found time to try his hand at aerial livestock delivery! The following season saw a Jack (Er. Zed?) of all bases, with 5 in total, but no one official base to call his own. Truly, the season of embodying what it means to be a hermit!
Hels: From the mind of Hermitcraft’s own Welsknight, Hels has taken the fandom by storm with its intrigue and possibilities. Explore what Zed’s own Hels could be like, create an elaborate theory where he is a Hels, or where he doesn’t have one at all! If anyone would transcend the rules of the universe to relax and simply share a meal with Evil Xisuma in the most dismal part of the universe, it’s surely the birthday boy.
Day 3: Dec 4
Hermitcraft 7-8: Settling into the Hermitcraft server, seasons 7 and 8 pushed our existing knowledge of Minecraft! From the Cave of Contraptions to the Sciscraper, Zedaph made it his mission to discover the secrets of Hermit psychology as well as some of the most useless functions in the game! Hang out for a round of golf or come up with an even less efficient contraption! There’s plenty of time for a new completely ethical experiment; the moon isn’t getting any bigger…Right?
Oddity:  Zed’s brain and body don’t quite work like anyone else’s, but that’s all the more reason to love him! This is a day to embrace everything that makes Zed peculiar, or to enjoy the peculiarities that he loves right back!
Day 4: Dec 5
Hermitcraft 9-10: Up for a challenge? This pair of seasons has plenty! Try your hand at an advancement or gamification, or design one for our guy! From falling at world height to cheeky spying to getting his friends caught on fire by an angry furnace, these seasons bring plenty of fun! Maybe get a little meta yourself and add a sneaky game to whatever you create!
Death: It’s a well-known fact that Zedaph toys with the cycle of death and life! To me, this seems like a great day to celebrate the way Zedaph celebrates death, whether it be his hundredth demise, making a game of ushering souls, or testing the limits of respawn! 
Day 5: Dec 6
Create: It’s important to properly enrich your Zedaph by letting him play with wrenches and gears with his eccentric friend every so often. Bite into a honeyed apple and feel the rush of being catapulted! Or catapulting your friends! Catapult everything!
Alternate Universe: Put this boy in a situation!!! Get creative and share the role another Zedaph plays (heh) in your story, whatever it may be! Alternatively, try and stop Zed from falling into another universe all on his own. He’s got portal technology, you know!
Day 6: Dec 7
Kris & Jack:  As long as I, Ell Cillpiines, am running this event, there will be always be a KnJ day. This is a day to appreciate Zed’s second channel in all of its filmy frenzied goodness and cast of characters! (D.I.)Why? Because a world without Kris & Jack isn’t a world I would want to be in!

traits for mechanically emphasizing a character's autism and/or adhd!! there's 11 traits total, with 5 shared between them, and 3 each that are specific to autism and adhd. the traits are beneficial, detrimental, and a mix of both, intended for 1-3 to be chosen for a single character. includes traits like sensory processing disorder, time blindness, and rejection sensitive dysphoria
service monsters
service animals - monster edition! you choose a customizable base for your monster, a statblock, and origin, and then get to choose your service type: guiding, hearing, mobility, medical alert, trauma, schizophrenia, or autism! each service type has a unique monster with different abilities, strengths, and magic. service monsters can't be used in combat but they have resistance to all damage and go to a pocket dimension upon dropping to 0hp
trauma mechanics
10 traits for panic disorder, ptsd, and cptsd, with an included definitions section and suggestions for trait application. includes mechanics for triggers, as well as for traits like panic attacks, insomnia, hypervigilance, and trust issues. the traits include different outcomes for meeting the dc or failing by different margins, and the aftereffects of failing a save, as well as ways that allies can help
my inspiration for making these was that i'm an autistic, mentally ill, traumatized disabled person who's been an active and leading disability advocate for the last 9 years and a disability-specialist social worker for 2.5 of those. definitely still room for improvement with my homebrew but i think there always will be when trying to put the incredibly varied human experience of disability into a crunchy numbers&rules format :o)

When do we get the Ikea version of software. Like... I want a printer that doesn't gouge me for ink and programs that work even when it's time to update. I want feature-poor. I'm talkin no ads. No data harvesting. No omnichannel ecosystems. Nothing designed by marketing teams. No gamification. I don't want any plug ins. I have a 1592 streak on Duolingo. That's after the long break I took after my break up. I've been doing it for around eight years now, with that depression break.
I have been increasingly annoyed with the gamification, the removal of forums, the increase of ads, the obvious fact that they removed forums to push you onto their most expensive subscription that will tell you what/why your mistake was, but with AI tools. I guessed pretty much within a month, based on in app trends and added features, when they went from a public to private company. That's wild even for me. I literally went "these updates are bullshit, they're clearly profit grabs, I bet the company went public" and a quick Google told me I was right. Their announcement this week that they were going to stop using people and start using more AI has pushed me over the edge. I'm pretty sure I'm deleting my account tomorrow. I wanted to finish out the friends quest I was in so I didn't leave someone hanging if they decided to stick with it. It's done.
Almost 1600 days. That's a lot of days 😭

Tamagotchi Pix Explore Feature Paved the Way for Tamagotchi Uni Tama Search

New and improved! Does the Tama Search feature give you Tamagotchi Pix Explore vibes? The Tamagotchi Pix was released back in 2021 and it introduced a new feature called “Explore”, this feature allowed you to use the built-in camera and discover new Tamagotchi characters around you!

It was later discovered that based on the color that the camera observed, select characters would display with some cute animations.

Fast forward to 2024 and the Tamagotchi Uni takes this functionality to the next level in software update 2.0.0 with The Tama Search feature. Tama Search feel like the next version or generation of the Explore feature that was exclusive to the Tamagotchi Pix. This feature allows you to meet up to 100 characters (right now), and even some exclusive ones too based on where you are. No one has official word on how this feature works, but some have discovered some tricks where renaming Wi-Fi networks gives you the ability to see different characters.

We really enjoy that we can walk around and use the Tama Search feature, as the Tamagotchi Uni comes close to a Wi-Fi network, you can explore which character can be found by that network without connecting to that Wi-Fi network.

This gamification has us walking around more and seeing how many characters we can meet! You never know what to expect, but the if there is a character you’ve met at a specific Wi-Fi network, if you visit that network again, you’ll see that character again, so it’s not random which actually makes it better.

You can enhance relationships with the characters you meet, and even meet special characters which is so much fun. You'll even collect stickers for each character you meet, and you can view these stickers along with the strength of your relationship.

Both the Tamagotchi Pix Explore and Tamagotchi Uni Tama Search features allow you to meet new Tamagotchi characters, but the experience on the Tamagotchi Uni takes it to the next level by taking advantage of the built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and ability to add more characters in over time through software updates, along with location specific characters.

continuing the topic of 'managers who oversee websites make wild decisions':
In my old job, I dealt with the quality software used by Large Manufacturing Company. This software was an ancient desktop application, so for several years, my team was focused on making an app that could reproduce its most vital features on a tablet, so that QA types could perform inspections and stuff without being at a computer.
And, for a long time, the main message coming down from the director overseeing this project was: it needed Gamification.
Gamification, for those of you who are unfamiliar, is all of the badges, achievements, progress trackers, leaderboards, etc in software. Stuff that gives you some goal to work toward and makes using the software itself into kinda a game. In the opinion of this director, what we really needed in this app that was used by 55-year-old mechanical engineers to document 'panel #12 on unit 321 has a chip in the paint' was to add cheevos.
So, for probably about a year and a half, that was a big part of what my team was focused on. We could've been adding, like, useful functionality, but instead we had to think about things like 'how do we make a leaderboard to track who has documented the most defects caused by holes drilled at the wrong size.' The 55-year-old engineers hated it, and on at least one occasion somebody thought that the badges and stuff were a sign that the app had been hacked.
my hero in all of this was my one coworker who, when asked to make it spray confetti over the screen when somebody finished submitting a defect report, wrote a script to do that... and then she jacked the confetti volume up by like 5x before a demo to management. So we did our demo as normal, and then when we submitted the document, the screen was covered by ten billion pieces of overlapping confetti, which crawled down the screen as the entire system was slowed to a chug by the sheer amount of bullshit it was trying to draw.

Should video games be more heavily regulated?
Video games can have problematic messaging such as those the game mentioned in the article The Revenge of the Yellowfaced Cyborg Terminator by Jeffery A. Ow, where there are prevalent themes of inflicting wanton violence and performing acts that would be looked down upon in the real world. However, in the virtual world these actions are nothing but an interesting experience for people to try. Even games with messages about combatting dictatorships such as the Far Cry series still allows players to perform violent acts, with the nature of free choice in video games allowing any gamer to choose whether they want to act as a hero or not. One could simply choose not to play the game’s missions and story and instead just go around being violent. The free choice that comes with these games allows people to lessen stress and safely explore evil and good actions in a safe manner. The benefits of free choice in these games makes it imperative that video games are not more heavily regulated.
Should websites be monitored for fake information?
The internet’s inherent danger makes it imperative that those using the internet pay attention to what is being said and to not immediately believe everything that they read. While most people who use the internet are aware of this, many individuals such as those who are younger or elderly fail to remember this rule. Due to this, I believe that websites should be forced to allow readers to add an opinion to the article to highlight if they view the information as misleading or false. This would be helpful to fight white supremacist websites such as the one mentioned in Ludo-Orientalism and the Gamification of Race by Fickle. This would be similar to Instagram’s feature where readers can add a note to the article for other readers.
Should problematic games be held liable for dangerous actions?
Video games may have problematic themes and encourage players to perform problematic actions to progress the story, but creators shouldn’t be held liable for people playing their games who may be influenced by these messages to an unintended degree. If someone mentally ill were to play a video game and believe that it was telling them to act out what they are doing in a violent game in the real world, it is not the creator’s fault as no reasonable person would have done this. It is the responsibility of those who look after such an individual or raise them to teach them the difference between games and the real world and educate them as to not act out what they see in the game in real life.
How should parents prevent children from forming dangerous mindsets?
Parents should prevent children from forming dangerous mindsets that may stem from playing violent games or going to problematic websites such as those mentioned in the previously discussed articles by monitoring their children’s online and real world activity and through educating their children about the differences between games and the real world and how there can be false websites designed to mislead them into dangerous viewpoints.
