Little Feat with Los Lobos at PNC Pavilion, Cincinnati, Ohio, June 18, 2024
When writing about a two-band gig, journalistic norms dictate leading with the headliner. But where Little Feat and Los Lobos are concerned, such guidelines are bunk.

For on June 18 at Cincinnati’s PNC Pavilion, support act Lobos, a band with its core quartet in place for 51 years, was the brightest star on a stage shared with the recently reconstituted Feat, with original keyboardist and onstage traffic cop Bill Payne; Dixie Chicken-era members Sam Clayton (percussion) and Kenny Gradney (bass); Let it Roll arrival Fred Tackett on guitar, mandolin and trumpet; and new additions Tony Leone on drums and Paul Barrere vocals and Scott Sharrard on guitar and Lowell George vocals.

What the fans who filled some one-third of the venue’s 4,000 seats received in return for braving the outdoor sauna was an hour from one of America’s longest-running and stable bands - horn/keyboard man Steve Berlin joined in 1982 - and 90 minutes from the world’s-best Little Feat tribute act with members of Los Lobos sitting in on multiple cuts.

It was still near 90 degrees when Los Lobos wrapped at 9 p.m., yet the fans dancing to the Grateful Dead’s “Bertha,” which morphed out of “Not Fade Away,” rewarded the group with a standing ovation. And Cesar Rosas (guitar, percussion, vocals), Conrad Lozano (bass), Louie Pérez (guitar, jaraña, drums), David Hidalgo (guitar, accordion, vocals), Berlin and touring drummer Alfredo Ortiz earned the accolades with a career- and-genre-spanning set bridging decades, cultures and influences.
The sextet opened with “Flat Top Box” and “Love Special Delivery” from 2021’s covers album, Native Sons, songs that featured Berlin’s baritone saxophone underscoring the 1950s vibe. Hidalgo’s Hendrixian guitar solo on the latter added trippy color to the song Rosas typically calls “LSD.”
It was off to the stratosphere from there with Lozano, who spent the gig seated on his amp, and Ortiz signaling a deep-pocketed “Dream in Blue” with an extended sax solo from Berlin. Rosas was on maracas and Pérez on jaraña for “Maricela,” instrumentation that would be reprised later on “Chuco’s Cumbia.”
Jazz was the hallmark of a 10-minute plea for peace on “The Neighborhood;” blues and a dedication to John Lee Hooker on “Don’t Worry Baby;” and the band looked to the East (“Kiko and the Lavender Moon”) and South (“Georgia Slop”) when Hidalgo strapped on a squeezebox and Pérez retuned temporarily to his original spot behind the kit.

Though Lobos’ opening set was necessarily truncated, Berlin, Hidalgo and Rosas had more stage time to come, as each sat in during Feat’s performance, bookended with “Fat Man in the Bathtub” and “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now.” Harmonica blower Michael LoBue also appeared for “Mellow Down Easy” (with Hidalgo) and “Long Distance Call” (Rosas) from Sam’s Place, the band’s 2024 blues covers album with Clayton on lead vocals.

These songs, Payne’s “Oh Atlanta,” and 1988’s “Hate to Lose Your Lovin’” sounded like the band that recorded them, as Sharrard (Gregg Allman Band) is more adept at channeling Craig Fuller than George.
Other tracks from Feat’s golden era were less successful. “Willin’” featured a mandolin solo and was akin to John Mayer singing “Ripple” for Dead & Company; Leone (Chris Robinson Botherhood) didn’t quite capture the essence of “Old Folks Boogie;” and “Dixie Chicken” - outfitted with trumpet, bass and synth solos - lost its momentum in the gratuitous showcases.

But “Cold, Cold, Cold,” “A Apolitical Blues,” “Spanish Moon” and “Skin it Back” - the latter two with Berlin reading charts from a piece of paper taped to a mic stand and honking on a baritone sax - almost sounded like Little Feat. Not quite. But almost.

In the end, Los Lobos met the absurdly high expectations that come with being the best live band in America on any given night, while Little Feat exceeded the more-modest hopes for a group of veterans and ringers.
Grade card: Little Feat with Los Lobos at PNC Pavilion - 6/18/24 - B/A

Loves Sacrifices update: "A Sight For Sore Eyes" three parter
Chapters 16 to 18 are up, and I've been waiting for over a year to post this.
This is a three part chapter, and I wanted to wait until all three were up before making this post. I had to split because all three parts put together is nearly five hours of reading. Almost as long as all three Pitch Perfect movies back to back.
I kept saying I wanted to finally get the baby shower done for over two years, and now it's finally finished. What else is that this chapter is meant to wrap up the Bailey Downs arc…which is why it took a while for me to get too.
This is also meant to be a siege chapter, much like I did with Unlife is Strange. Because of how long it took me to get these out, I'm also taking a little break from Love's Sacrifices, and going to be focusing on finishing Mission to Silas, and getting back to writing Unlife.
And since this is meant to wrap up the Bailey Downs storyline, think of it like a "Mid Season" finale.
Which also leads me to this content warning.
Like I said, this is meant to be a battle chapter, and it's probably where the story gets to its darkest points. You may even forget this is a Pitch Perfect crossover.
These chapters include: Blood, light gore and mutilation. Vampire related violence. Werewolf related violence. Demon related violence, curtesy of Lamashtu. Nudity and mild sexuality. Torture. Shooting and gun violence. Children being threatened.
And of course, character death; these three chapters will see two named characters, who were introduced in the first few chapters, being killed off.
...or you could read the TV Tropes page and see who bites it in advance. But what's the fun in that ?
Anyways, links to all three parts down below.

Sims In Bloom: Generation 2 Pt. 157 (Coping Without Ash)
It had been almost a week since Ash's escort to the Landgraabs in the city. They weren't even allowed to call him, and Heather moved through the house in a walking haze. She forced herself to eat for the sake of their unborn child and doted on Lavender despite her depression, but she withdrew from her usual nature.
Conrad and her family were deeply concerned, and her mother, Daisy, arrived in the Bay with Holly, Betta, and a few suitcases. Heather's close-knit family was determined to help her through this, and they planned to stay until after the baby was born.
Normally, Conrad might object to packing their home with so many people and pets with a newborn on the way, but he hated seeing Heather like this. He hoped her family could help, but he knew, deep down, the only thing she needed was Ash.
"I talked to Felix today," he said, as they shared a cheesecake made by Daisy to follow dinner. Heather looked up, listening without a word. "He said he's found some interesting things during discovery, and he's confident about our hearing in San Myshuno."
"Did he say what he meant?" asked Daisy, but Conrad shook his head as Daisy frowned. "I just can't get past the Landgraabs pulling this after everything!"
Though she'd tried to hold it together for Heather's sake, Daisy couldn't hold back a sob while they gathered around the table.
"Why you sad, Gramma? Ash isn't gone for always. He'll be back."
"Of course he will."
Conrad got up from the table to clear a few plates, trying to remain strong in the face of Heather's crumbling facade. But he was processing grief in his own way over the ordeal, switching between anger and stoicism in rapid swings. (Seriously he's been all over the place.)
Heather went to bed early after giving Gord a bath, so Daisy and Holly hung out with Lavender and Betta when Conrad was called to a crime scene. To say they were managing without Ash around was barely accurate, but they knew they couldn't give up yet.
In Britechester, Felix and Lilith were feeling the loss of Ash's genius expertise, too. Lilith had welded the time travelling component, but now she was trying to use Ash's notes to program it to her computer and calculate a landing point. She was struggling.
"When is the custody hearing? It'll be real nice when we can finally talk to Ash again about all this."
"Next week," said Felix, strumming a silly song on Lilith's guitar.
"Stop being a goofball for a minute and take this seriously," she begged, trying not to laugh at him anyway. "Emit thinks our tech's too primitive and doesn't know enough about it to help - if he could even find the time out from underneath my sister."
"You think they're falling for each other?"
"They keep saying they're just having fun, but I know my sister. Angela wants happily ever after and she likes Emit, but she's afraid to get attached."
Felix nodded. "That's fair, isn't it? He is a time traveler, and once we help him catch his time thief, he'll go back to the future."
Lilith frowned. She turned back to her computer just as the screen flashed and turned blue, spilling code across the monitor and shocking her fingertips through the keyboard. "Dammit, I just fried it and it tried to fry me!"
Felix put down the guitar and smiled. "It's okay, Lil. Ash has already invented time travel, we just have to prove it works. Take a break, your parents are making dinner. Then see if Emit knows anything about our "primitive" computers. I think Angela's busy working out, so you should find him unoccupied for the time being."
Lilith took his advice and headed for a soak in the tub. While she relaxed, Felix repaired the computer. He was still holding on to the engagement ring, still waiting for the perfect moment to propose. But they were too distracted lately by time travel and Ash's custody case.
Emit did prove helpful with the computer, teaching Lilith how to overclock it to process Ash's codes and calculations.
"I can't say for sure the code's right, but I know a ten-year-old coming up with half of this is amazing. I trust the parts even I don't understand because so few in this time could know any of this."
"So you think we're almost ready to travel through time?" Lilith's earlier frustrations had turned back to hope.
"We could leave as soon as you're done with the custody hearing. My wristboard is still tracking the time thief, but with with two working devices, we'll head them off anywhere in time they think they can hide."
With a buzz of excitement running through their veins, Lilith and Felix shared a smile and a searing kiss. "Can you believe it? As soon as Ash is back with his parents, we're going to jump through time!"
Felix had lived through more decades than he could count, but experiencing the future - or the past - with his beloved Lilith sounded like the adventure of a lifetime. ->

NOTE: In the interest of full disclosure, I don't know if any mods out there connect a custody battle with grief moodlets and these moodlets for Conrad actually followed the death of Ben. Heather grieved Ben, too, but she was more muted and dazed, understandably, because she didn't know him as well. But grief moodlets can be persistent and Conrad was still going through it during this time, so I mean no disrespect to Ben (really!) but I usurped those moodlets for my plot, and their grief styles informed how I wrote this arc.

💗 — i'd like to plot so here are some specific thread concepts that i don't wanna turn into opens. like this to plot one of them ! warning: much of the content under the cut is nsfw and t/aboo.
easton — nasty body worship stuff on both ends for a couple that’s absolutely obsessed with each other, nanny threads, a wife + a super subby third, also willing to explore m/m or m/m/f that includes the men fucking cause i’m not a coward.
harvey — pervy brother/step brother stuff, stalker stuff, kidnapping. could be down for something with dubcon but it’d need to be plotted out. also very down for writing them roleplaying cnc, him happily engaging in a girl’s fantasies but i’m not writing actual noncon.
sage — would love to write them with a cock some more, specifically would love brother’s gf stuff, cock worship stuff, cock warming with a friend or gf, cage stuff, somno ugh.
holly or amore — lap dances turned filthy smut, or girls who can’t help half going at it on stage then taking it back to the dressing room. bonus points for anything inspired by showgirls.
daisy — someone who is filthy and maybe even a little possessive and toxic for her to adore and maybe even eventually break the walls down of because of her eternal devotion. also would love twincest sue me.
gloriana — sorority girl hazing or big sis/lil sis nastiness, just anything where she gets to be in charge of a lot of girls and maybe has favourites. step or real sisters, manipulation or obsession.
conrad — give him a gf that takes care of him, teases him, pushes him out of his comfort zone, maybe more of a pleasure dom type. co-dependent siblings is also very, very fun.
carmy or koa — give either one a sweet little wife for them to take care of and dominate. carmy is pretty sweet and doting, bigggg breeding kink and wants a million kids. koa is meaner and filthier.
tripp — give me cruel intentions style step or real siblings but with lots of smut.
logan — let him be someone's inappropriately older dad bf.

Nonbinary actor and playwright Cole Escola wins Tony Award

Nonbinary actor and playwright Cole Escola wins Tony Award

Nonbinary actor and playwright Cole Escola has won ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role’ at this year’s Tony Awards.
The Broadway debut for the star and playwright of the outlandish comedy Oh, Mary!, Cole Escola, has seen them take a huge win at the 78th Tony Awards.
Escola took to the stage upon winning ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role’, in a Bernadette Peters-inspired gown and wig.
The look was reminiscent of Peters’ look in 1999 when she won ‘Best Actress’ for Annie Get Your Gun.
Opening on Broadway just under a year to the day Escola won the award, Oh Mary! is a dark yet hilarious comedy.
Reimagining a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and her secret dreams.
The 80-minute one-act play has unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires, examining “the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).”
A big Broadway queer sensation, Oh, Mary! has received 5 Tony Award nominations, including Best Play and Best Actor in a Play.
As well as Best Featured Actor in a Play – Conrad Ricamora, Best Costume Design of a Play – Holly Pierson, and Best Direction of a Play – Sam Pinkleton.
Escola agreed to be considered eligible for the award ceremony’s gendered category.
While not the first nonbinary performer to win a Tony, Escola is the first to win in the ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role’ category.

‘A win for something I made.’
During their speech, Cole Escola gave several shout-outs, including their mum and a date on Grindr.
Overwhelmed when their name was announced, they ran to the stage excitedly, saying a few words.
Other category nominees were George Clooney for Good Night, and Good Luck, Jon Michael Hill for Purpose, Daniel Dae Kim for Yellow Face, Harry Lennix for Purpose, and Louis McCartney for Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
“I want to thank the other nominees, George, Jon, Harry, Daniel and Louis,” Escola said, overwhelmed.
“It’s an honour to be in your company, and more than that, it’s been a sincere pleasure spending time with you over these warm salads at all these lunches.”
“First of all, hi mom. I love you. I’ll call you when I can,” they added before naming others and Oh Mary! director Sam Pinkleton.
But before mentioning comedian Amy Sedaris, Escola thanked “T Bone from Grindr,” amidst laughs.
Immediately after the win, Cole continued to thank many others who helped make this moment happen.
Admitting they were overwhelmed for a win for something they made.
“Not something that I tried to shoehorn myself into,” they said.
“I wrote this part to show the stuff that I knew that I had in me that I wanted to show, and trusting myself and other people trusting me got this.”

Broadway’s night of nights
Playwright and actor Harvey Fierstein received a special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
With work spanning decades, Fierstein’s work, including Torch Song Trilogy and Kinky Boots, shares a powerful space onstage for audiences and performers.
As well as giving voice to the struggles of our communities, he shares his powerful impact on the arts.
Upon winning, Fierstein talked about how emotional it was to receive a standing ovation from the audience.
“What touches me most is the idea that my journey has meant something to people, not just that they have enjoyed the show.”
“I wasn’t going to change, so it (theatre) was going to have to change around me,” he said.
“But now we have a political system looking to erase us, taking our names out of libraries and theatres.”
“There’s a whole bunch of people whose anger has been released … and they are motivated by hate, there’s no love there.”
Other highlights include Australia’s Sarah Snook took home her first Tony for best performance by a leading actress in a play for The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger won her first Tony for her role of Norma Desmond in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of Sunset Boulevard.
The night was hosted by Cynthia Erivo, who closed the Tony Awards out with her rendition of “And I am Telling You (I’m Not Going)” from the Tony-winning musical Dreamgirls.

A friend asked for some spooky books so they can give their brain something chew on while waiting for the next part of The Magnus Protocol; I collect copies of books so I can always give them to people as gifts, but I thought I'd share the ones I suggested here too! These are just from my personal collection, not a complete list of everything spooky that might have similar vibes to all the various Magnussings. Maybe you've read some of these before, but it might be fun to have a reminder. Maybe some of these will be very new, and hopefully, enjoyable! They range from being for younger teens, to YA, to more mature, but all feature different creepy subjects and scary situations, occasionally with humor mixed in (some have happy resolutions, but there are ones with bitter-sweet, or just plain sad endings... good, well-written, but sad. some are also part of a series, but can be read as stand-alone stories)-
"Bunnicula" by James and Deborah Howe
"Stonewords; a Ghost Story" by Pam Conrad
“Well Witched” (AKA “Verdigris Deep”) by Francis Hardinge
“Doll Bones” by Holly Black
“A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L'Engle
“The Dark Pond” by Joseph Bruchac
“Deep and Dark and Dangerous” by Mary Downing Hahn
“Malice” and "Havoc" (series) by Chris Wooding
"Poison" by Chris Wooding
“Scorpion Shards” (Star Shards Chronicles) by Neal Shusterman
“Feed” by Matthew Tobin Anderson
"The Lives of Christopher Chant" and "Charmed Life" (Chrestomanci series) by Diana Wynne Jones
“Frozen Charlotte” by Alex Bell
"Practical Magic" by Alice Hoffman
“The Kind Folk” Ramsey Campbell

WIP Wednesday
I wanted to share a little chunk of Lights in the Shadow, a short story where Dalgar Thorne heads out into the Wandering Hills with two other recruits to complete the first part of the Joining: obtaining a vial of darkspawn blood.
Inspired by #s 21 + 22 from the Rook Story Time Prompts by @hyperions-light, one of which they requested!
This bit picks up a day (or several - can't decide) into the group's trek into the wilderness to find some darkspawn. I'm only just barely planning ahead, lol, so this description of the environment will likely be rewritten to set up the location/context of the climax later on, now that I've decided where (and how) that will happen.
~
The unsettled wilds of the Wandering Hills were a land for Grey Wardens and only the very best class of monster hunter. Out here the settlements were sparser, the beasts were larger, and—most importantly—long abandoned segments of the Deep Roads ran beneath this region and darkspawn frequently tunneled up from below.
Olivier led the group single-file along a ridge, humming a tune Dalgar hadn’t heard before—they once said they always composed their best work out in the field. A tangle of squat trees and creeping shrubs hemmed the group in on one side, and a steep drop-off on the other. An unbroken field of blue stretched overhead, though grey clouds were collecting along the horizon. A dusting of snow in the night was finally beginning to melt in the afternoon sun, revealing patches of a dense carpet of dry grasses, hardscrabble stone, and frozen soil. Tracks of blighted land from past incursions twisted across the terrain like old scars.
Conrad followed close behind the Warden, a standard issue shield and sword strapped to his back along with his pack. He’d been a cheerful travelling companion these past two days, even if most of his stories revolved around his uncle’s pig farm. He seemed afraid of Olivier and Sybil, so he mostly spoke to Dalgar about said pigs. Sybil brought up the rear mostly in silence, only breaking it now and then to ask about the terrain or complain about how her feet hurt.
“Why do they do that?” Sybil materialized at Dalgar’s elbow and he shivered at low rumble of her voice in his ear. Conrad glanced nervously between her and where Olivier walked a little ways ahead of them. They were humming away happily and every so often Dalgar caught snatches of lyrics.
“Do what?” he asked.
“Sing,” she replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. Sybil scowled at the back of the Warden’s head, likely more frustrated than angry. “Those things’ll be on top of us before we can react.”
Dalgar opened his mouth to reply.
“I have more reliable senses for tracking darkspawn than my hearing, my dear—though I must say my hearing is not so bad,” Olivier said, sounding pleasantly surprised.
Sybil’s thin eyebrows nearly disappeared under the edge of her cap. Unbothered over being caught, she just asked:
“What senses?”
“Nothing complicated. I can sense darkspawn—when they are close—of course, they can also sense me. So I must be cautious, especially with you three.” The Senior Warden shrugged, ducking under the ragged arm of some sort of holly tree. Dalgar decided to broach a subject he’d been pondering for days.
“I thought there’d be more darkspawn out here,” he said. It felt like this place was practically teeming with them, at least from a distance. Not to mention the stories he'd heard over the years. Olivier glanced over their shoulder and shot him a fond but knowing smile.
“I am intentionally giving the largest groups a wide berth. No need to overwhelm us, yes?”
“That does seem wise,” Sybil drawled.
