This is a friendly reminder that none disabled people often do benefit from the same accommodations disabled people benefit from.

if you didn’t realize, ableism is actually bigotry and systemic ableism and inaccessibility are really oppression and it’s not something disabled people brought on ourselves by having bodies&minds that you think are inferior and therefore not worth fighting for. disabled people’s lives and wellbeing matter. we don’t have to earn our worthiness by doing “enough” to deserve a good life. nobody does.

To fellow physically disabled people I highly recommend saying PARKCORE whenever you try to stand up. Makes the struggle very epic poggers.

My mobility is getting harder and harder each day, yesterday I was walking up the stairs (ofc I use the rail to go up/down any stairs) to my work and I was getting so tired I had to stop for a second and once I got to the top I sat down and I was sweating a little and then I took my big beautiful belly out of my pants and played with it☺️

When people see my cool wheelchair decorations...

It's seriously changed my interaction with strangers so much for the better. Now I make crochet friends instead of answering awkward invasive questions.

Just a reminder that although "my body my choice" is about women [edit: and anyone with the ability to get pregnant] this rule also applies to disabled people refusing treatment and aids.
It's my choice I don't take painkillers for my chronic pain and rather just stay home most of the time and skip lectures.
It's my choice I don't use a cane, even though I have access to one, despite the fact I could walk further with it and not limp.
It's my choice I don't do hearing rehabilitation or wear hearing aids for my APD despite the fact I can't hear lectures or my friends properly.
It's my choice I don't go to therapy or take meds for my disorders.
It's my choice and I don't care what you think. It's my right to choose those things. I know my body the best, you have no say in this.
"But you could hear better! You could not be in pain and walk normally! You could be better!" I don't care. I'm fine being the way I am. I know what's good for me. I know painkillers would hurt my body more then help for at least three reasons. I'm not a child, I know what I want and the consequences of not doing something. My health, my rules.

What's a mobility aid (or aids) you wish more people knew about?
for me, ive been really loving my rollator! it's a kind of walker. it helps steady me more than a cane would, helps carry things for me, and most of all helps me sit more frequently to save energy throughout the day!
Tumblr media
this is my current one, drive nitro tall, cuz my hand height is really high and this was one of the tallest i could find (41 inch max height), and it folds sideways and stays standing and can roll around like that, which helps for navigating tight spaces and storage without having to lean it on something!

i first used a rollator that was bought used cheap from a thrift store, ive seen a lot at thrift stores! even thought it was too short for me and the brakes didnt work, it still made a HUGE difference for me, i wasnt expecting it! I highly reccomend checking there and other used storefronts online to find mobility aids for cheap and start trying some out, even if its a bit jank!
i wanna hear more random stuff about mobility aids! please feel free to share anything from anecdotes to technical details to random bits you wish others knew more about, either to use themself or to know about mobility aid users!
another random one i didnt know about is forearm crutches! i havent used them myself, but i know some people who do, and they seem like a great alternative to canes that dont strain the wrist and hand as much and let you lean on them in a different way, can use one or two!

One thing they don't tell you about being mobility impaired/physically disabled is that sometimes you have to do weird things in public to survive. I'm out here crawling up stairs on my hands and feet, and sitting on pavements bc for some reason we had to get rid of public benches

if you are someone who is thinking about using a mobility aid and have never previously used one PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get a professional to help you choose the right one if possible.
I have been a mobility aid user, and more specifically a forearm crutch user for about 5 years nows and here recently I have been working a lot and at my job I have only really been able to use one of my crutches because I often need to use one hand. but because of that I was using one crutch and trying to make up for the pain on both sides of my body and was putting almost all of my body weight/pressure on the side with my crutch.
because of that I had basically woke up sometime this week and had a bit of shoulder pain, I didn't think much of it until the pain came back about 5x worse at night. I couldn't move my arm up except for a few inches, if someone touched my shoulder I was in agonizing pain, I just thought maybe it was my normal joint pain but was a bit more intense this time.
the next day I was still in a significant amount of pain and debated back and forth on if I should see a doctor or not because what if it was just my chronic pain, but I decided to go anyways.
I had gone to see ortho because I knew they had my records and might know what's wrong. I get there and explain my symptoms then they tell me they wanna get some x-rays. I got the x-rays and waited for the results to come back, the doctor came into the room and showed me my x-rays. she showed me that the bones in my neck weren't curving like a normal neck, but because of the muscle strain and spasms that I was having they were going straight up and down.
so because of the amount of support I need and was having to use it only I one side I sustained a neck injury. so now I have to go to physical therapy because of a pinched nerve in my neck and significant muscle spasms that are the cause of my shoulder pain.
all of this to say, please get professional input and make sure you're using it right, it could save you so much pain and future issues.

disabled people aren't "strong" for not using mobility aids when they need them. lots of people are/would be a lot stronger with the help of mobility aids, that is the reason they exist. using mobility aids doesn't make you weak, it's quite literally the opposite

Disabled people are people. Therefore you can’t start touching me or grabbing my things without permission. If I say don’t touch me you do not ignore my wishes because I’m disabled. Just like any other person I have a right to autonomy over my body and my decisions. Unless you have been given permission or it’s an emergency, you cannot simply start touching me. I’m not an object I am a person. Being disabled doesn’t mean you, a random stranger get to make decisions for me. If it seems someone is in need of help ask them. If they say no you don’t then forcefully help them because you think you know better than them what they need.

It's better now with my cuff crutches, because I can shift my weight around and even put most of my weight on my arms, but yeah...

Guys can disabled people reblog this with stuff your partner(s) and friends do for you that you really appreciate?
I'm doing some writing stuff so pretty much any disability goes, it can be invisible or visible, it can be a neurodivergencey i don't care as long as you are disabled in some way
You don't have to disclose your disability if you don't want to, I just want to see some things that the people around you do that you appreciate!
