The Philosophy of Practice
The philosophy of practice explores the nature, purpose, and implications of repeated actions, skill acquisition, and discipline in shaping human life, ethics, and understanding. It addresses questions about how consistent effort contributes to personal growth, mastery, and the formation of habits, as well as its broader societal and existential significance.
Key Themes:
Practice and Mastery
Skill Development: Practice is essential for honing skills, whether in art, science, sports, or daily life. Philosophically, this raises questions about the relationship between effort and talent, and whether mastery is achievable by anyone given sufficient practice.
Perfection vs. Process: Some philosophies view practice as a means to an end (mastery), while others emphasize the value of practice as an ongoing, intrinsic process.
Ethical Practice
In ethics, practice involves cultivating virtues (e.g., patience, humility, courage) through repeated actions.
Aristotle’s concept of habituation suggests that moral character is built through repeated virtuous actions, making practice central to ethical living.
Habit Formation
Practice often leads to the formation of habits, both beneficial and harmful. Philosophical discussions focus on:
The distinction between conscious practice and unconscious habit.
How habits shape identity and free will.
Embodiment and Knowledge
Through practice, knowledge becomes embodied or tacit (e.g., riding a bike or playing an instrument). This leads to questions about the nature of knowledge:
Is knowledge primarily intellectual, or does it require physical engagement?
How does practice bridge the gap between theory and experience?
Time and Repetition
Practice inherently involves repetition over time, leading to reflections on the nature of time itself:
How does the repetitive nature of practice influence our perception of progress?
Does practice emphasize a linear or cyclical view of time?
Practice as Ritual
Many practices take on a ritualistic or meditative quality, fostering mindfulness and presence. Philosophical traditions such as Zen Buddhism emphasize practice (e.g., zazen or seated meditation) as an expression of living in the moment.
This invites reflection on whether practice is primarily a means to an end or an end in itself.
The Role of Failure
Failure is an inherent part of practice, often seen as a stepping stone to improvement. Philosophical discussions explore:
How does failure shape the meaning of practice?
Can failure itself be considered a form of success or growth?
The Social Dimension of Practice
Many practices are communal, such as group sports, collective rituals, or collaborative work. These raise questions about the interplay between individual and collective effort.
How do social contexts shape what is considered valuable practice?
Practice and Creativity
While practice involves repetition, creativity often requires breaking from routine. Philosophers explore the tension between disciplined practice and the spontaneity of innovation.
Existential and Spiritual Perspectives
In existentialism, practice can be tied to the idea of authentic living: the repetitive engagement with one’s choices and actions creates meaning in an otherwise indifferent universe.
In spiritual traditions, practice is often viewed as a path to enlightenment or transcendence, requiring faith and persistence.
Practice in Professional and Scientific Contexts
The philosophy of practice also examines the iterative processes of experimentation, refinement, and learning in fields like science, medicine, and education.
How does the structure of professional practice influence the pursuit of truth or excellence?
Challenges and Limitations of Practice
Not all forms of practice guarantee improvement or success, leading to questions about when persistence becomes futile.
How do external factors, such as societal constraints or innate abilities, limit the effectiveness of practice?
The philosophy of practice highlights the transformative power of consistent effort in shaping individual and collective life. It bridges the gap between intention and action, theory and reality, and connects the mundane with the profound. By reflecting on practice, we gain insight into the ways we cultivate skills, virtues, and meaning, and how these processes shape our understanding of what it means to be human.

✧・゜: 8 rules i live by now that i used to ignore :・゜✧
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hey lovelies,
i used to read endless lists of “rules to live by” and think: okay… cute, but not realistic. half of them felt like fake-deep quotes you’d see under a picture of matcha. i would save them, forget them, and go right back to being overwhelmed, over-giving, under-glowing.
but now? i’ve lived through enough messes, heartbreaks, girlhood grief, and glow-ups to actually have a few rules that changed me. not from books. from living. and they’re not perfect. they’re evolving. but they hold me.
here are the 8 i keep coming back to, the ones i used to scroll past, roll my eyes at, or ignore completely. now i live by them like they’re law.
⋆.ೃ࿔:・ 1. never beg for energy that should flow ・:⋆.ೃ࿔:
attention, love, clarity, respect, if i have to chase it, it’s not for me. if i have to ask more than once, it’s not aligned. i used to beg people to just see me. now i just see myself, and the right ones meet me there.
⋆.ೃ࿔:・ 2. if it costs your peace, it's too expensive ⋆.ೃ࿔:
i used to say yes to everything. every plan. every favor. every text at 2am. it made me anxious, resentful, not present. now if it disrupts my nervous system, i pause. peace is my new currency. i don’t overspend.
⋆.ೃ࿔:・ 3. repetition is the real magic ・:⋆.ೃ࿔:
i always wanted a “transformation.” a big life shift. but change came from boring, beautiful repetition. brushing my hair every night. drinking water. journaling even when i didn’t feel like it. habits that say “i love myself” in whispers, not screams.
⋆.ೃ࿔:・ 4. people reveal themselves in how they handle your softness ・:⋆.ೃ࿔:
i used to shrink when people laughed at my sensitivity. now i watch. softness is a test. if someone flinches at my gentleness, they’re not strong enough to hold me. my softness isn’t fragile. it’s divine.
⋆.ೃ࿔:・ 5. being “low maintenance” is not a personality trait ・:⋆.ೃ࿔:
i used to pride myself on needing nothing. like it made me cooler to never ask for help, care, compliments, anything. it didn’t. it made me empty. now i let myself need. i let myself want. i let myself glow. and i still don’t owe anyone an explanation.
⋆.ೃ࿔:・ 6. treat your space like it’s part of your nervous system ・⋆.ೃ࿔:
messy room = messy head. i used to ignore it and try to “push through.” but now i start with the space. light a candle. fold the blanket. open a window. your room talks to your body. make it speak gently.
⋆.ೃ࿔:・ 7. the version of you that you admire already exists ⋆.ೃ࿔:
i used to obsess over becoming “her.” the glow girl, the soft girl, the mysterious coquette. but the truth is? she’s just a version of me that’s consistent. who’s grounded. who’s unbothered. i already am her, when i stop abandoning myself.
⋆.ೃ࿔:・ 8. protect your energy like it’s sacred (because it is) ・:⋆.ೃ࿔:
i used to leak energy. over-explaining myself. apologizing constantly. chasing closure. posting for validation. now i pull it back. protect it. not out of fear, out of reverence. i’m not hard to reach, but i am hard to access fully. and that’s how it should be.
you don’t have to follow all of these. but maybe one of them is exactly what you needed to hear today.
you’re allowed to choose new rules. you’re allowed to rewrite the way you show up. every single day is a chance to live more like the version of you you miss.
keep glowing. keep choosing yourself. it’s working, even if it’s quiet.
xoxo, mindy 🤍

Major pet peeve is people seeing an object being explained as having 'ritual purpose' and dunking on it on the level that they see the word 'ritual' and are thinking like 'complex solemn religious ceremony' when the anthropological term being used in these contexts just means sets of habitual behaviors performed on a cultural level. Like, a christmas tree bought at target by a secular culturally christian family for their kids to hang Bluey ornaments on has 'ritual purpose'.
The reason 'ritual purpose' is funny as a descriptor for a cup shaped like a frog or whatever is because it's so vague and just narrows its usage down to 'having culturally specific meaning/use in a habitual manner', not because Foolish Historians/Archeologists/Etc by and large see any object/art they don't immediately understand and imagine it must have been utilized by high priests in elaborate blood ceremonies to a frog god or something.

the idea came to me in a migraine induced dream but now im obsessed with the concept of a mu qingfang who knew the abuse bunhe was going through at the hands of og!shen qingqiu/shen jiu and did his best to treat the kid whenever he could (and bring his concerns to zhangmen shixiong, which were obviously very much ignored) and his constant worry over the situation means that when the qi deviation happens he is suspicious of shen qingqiu’s changes for all different reasons and very much protective of luo binghe -who is a sweet child and an earnest disciple who seems to always find the most incredible medicinal herbs to bring to his mu shishu as thanks for the care bestowed upon him- which means that when the whole shen qingqiu dying thing happens instead of bad mouthing luo binghe or fighting him at every chance he does his best to come over and keep an eye on things to try and help him and make sure luo binghe won’t kill himself trying to bring shen qingqiu back because he remembers that earnest kid and he’s witnessed luo binghe’s devotion to this shen qingqiu first hand and knows there is no way that the kid who cried when ning yingying found a bird with a broken wing and begged mu qingfang to fix it and the kid that would always borrow medical texts and try to find new herb combinations as if it was a game between him and qian cao disciples is actually doing anything nefarious to shen qingqiu’s corpse.
anyways in this essay i will-
#listen#binghe needs to have more people in his corner#and for some reason i have imprinted on mqf#so you get cool healer uncle#who probably smoked weed with binghe and made him promise to keep quiet#lbh and mqf bonding activity was teaching lbh to properly roll joints#anyways mqf understanding that the rituals are intricate and lqg doesn’t have any other way of coping with his grief#but the first time lqg injures lbh almost to death in a fight they get into a screaming match so violent#that no bai zhan discipline will look at him in the face without going pale for the next month#that is his nephew! who found several thought-to-be-extinct herbs for him!#also him telling sqq that lbh might have forgotten what he did but mqf certainly didn’t#a healer never forgets the wounds they heal#and sqq is just like yeah brother me neither :(#mqf is going to therapy these idiots so fucking hard#lbh also keeps trying to matchmake him with some nice demons in his court like shamelessly trying to poach his mu shishu#also he and shang qinghua are the only ones who still get the full shishu treatment#except lbh kinda bullies sqh a little for the virtue of the whole mbj situation#(hes never gonna let them live that down)#anyways it’s whatever at first but at one poont years in the future it does become a point of contempt with the other peak lords#nothing can take away from me that when bored they will squabble like children#such is the way of bored adults#i have rambled enough so normal tags now#svsss#svsss writing#luo binghe#shen qingqiu#mu qingfang#bingqiu#svsss au

Before you command spirits, command yourself.
This is the root. The mystic root: Know thyself.
Western esotericism doesn’t begin with the wand, it begins with the mirror. With meditation. With mastery of the inner terrain. Because if you cannot still your mind, if you cannot silence the chaos within, how can you hope to command the chaos without? If the self is fragmented, or led by illusion, then no ritual, no sigil, no invocation will hold.
Master the self. Then watch how the world begins to bend.

The Year and a Day Tradition: A Devotional Practice for the Witches’ New Year
As the Wheel of the Year turns toward Samhain, many witches and Pagans find themselves at a pivotal moment of reflection and renewal. Samhain, celebrated on October 31st – November 2nd (in the Northern Hemisphere), marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter—a time when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is at its thinnest. For many practitioners, it is…

hate how any valid criticism of femininity is acceptably offset by some numbskull pointing out how skillful it is to perform said femininity, when in fact it should be noted that going so far as to endure and practice a skill for the sake of beauty is the female socialization that these ‘‘feminists’’ supposedly understand lol like it goes over their heads
Like no.
your dedication to achieve the perfect winged eyeshadow is not feminist just because it required skill. femininity is a set of behaviors after all.
