hey boo tell us about hurt Bellamy and Clarke taking care of him yeah?

Okay, so I’ve been rewatching season 4 and I think it’s golden Bellarke there as much as most people don’t agree so that got me to another episode of WHAT COULD’VE BEEN TM:

Imagine if in 4x05 it was Bellamy who got hurt and not Octavia.

That he managed to escape the Azgeda soldiers and him and his sister decided to ride home and warn the others (Bellamy on a horse too btw, I can’t believe we have NOT seen that yet, it’s been 6 effing seasons).

In the middle of the way they split because the Azgeda people are hunting them down and Echo stabs him instead of Octavia.

He still manages to climb on his horse and later his sister finds him and gets them to Arkadia all worried AF. He’s almost bleeding out and O comes bursting through the doors barely holding him upright yelling “I need help!”

They rush him on a cot but he’s already not breathing so Clarke performs CPR.

Imagine those idiots “kissing” back then. It would’ve made a great parallel to 6x10 too later on with him saving his life just like she did back then.

So Clarke’s all freaking out, hands fluttering, eyes welling with tears but she commands herself to do this, because right now all that matters is that he lives.

Finally, he breathes in and his disoriented eyes look around worriedly. When they fall on hers he immediately goes into panic mode “Roan is coming…the army, they’ll be here. We need to-”

And her small hands cup his cheeks and steady his head “Hey, hey, it’s okay. We know, you got here before them, we’ll figure it out”. 

He briefly smiles before his eyes close again and he struggles to breathe. “Let’s take him to medical!” she barks and once there she finds a needle and a thread and stitches him up. He’s in pain because they have no anesthesia but he grits his teeth and just squeezes his sister’s hand really hard. 

Octavia had forgotten her anger for the time being, too worried about him and she’s snappy and angry at everyone because she almost goddamn lost him. 

Clarke stabilizes him but doesn’t want to leave. Everything in her screams “Stay! He might need you, he might stop breathing again and you won’t be there to save him!” and her eyes are focused on his chest, rising and falling slowly. 

But she has to go. Talking with Roan and ensuring the peace was important now so she leaves Octavia there and with one last squeeze of his hand, heads outside.

Later, when Arkadia burns because of a Trishanakru grounder who found their camp and wanted to destroy every tech that came in his way, she runs back inside and thankfully finds Octavia and Miller already taking Bellamy out.

The Arkadians decide they’ll sleep outside that night for safety, even though they mostly put the fire out. 

She finds him lying on a bedroll near the other medbay patients. He’s awake and Octavia’s sleeping next to him.

“Hey.” he says groggily, painfully and she smiles, sitting by him, spreading the extra blankets she got for him.”You okay?” Of course he asks about her. She’s always his priority and if he wasn’t hurt, she’d hit him on the head with whatever comes her way.

But instead she just smiles “I’m fine.” as she’s checking his pulse and his bandage which has bled some because of course, of damn course, he tore the stitches already, five hours after she put them up, which she points out, his eyes remains on hers. Finally, when she’s done doing her job and pulls his shirt back over, he grabs her wrist.

“You need to rest.” he pulls her down and she tries to struggle but he pleads with his tired eyes “Come on, I make a good blanket.” she gives up because she truly is exhausted and maybe because, she’s missed being held by someone, but him in particular or maybe because, she just craved his warmth.

She snuggles under the blankets on his good side and he wraps her up in his arms as best as he can. He dozes off fast, his breath fanning her hair, making her a bit ticklish and she buries her nose in the crook of his neck feeling safe for the first time in forever.

Magicians vs Penumbra...again

It’s 5AM, I can’t sleep and I’m thinking about the connections between Queliot in the Magicians and Jupeter in The Penumbra Podcast.  

I’ve talked about this before but it’s interesting not only in the things the characters have in common, but in the ways they differ or don’t exactly line up, as well as the divergent paths the canon stories give them.  

So on the surface, the characters mostly appear to line up:

Eliot Waugh = Peter Nureyev

Quentin Coldwater = Juno Steel

Eliot and Peter are both the suave, more worldly, much cooler seeming half of the pairing.  They are gorgeous, they know it, and they wouldn’t let themselves be seen in anything other than something incredible.  Both fairly High Femme but also might totally murder you.  Bad Boys and objects of desire to the less put-together POV characters of Juno and Quentin. 

And Juno and Quentin are the total disasters.  Both struggle with severe depression and various other kinds of mental illness, are awkward but endearing, pay very little attention to their personal appearance or actively seem to do everything they can Not to seem fashionable.  Both still incredibly brave and heroic despite all this.  Mostly out of stubbornness, to be fair.  

As I said, though, the interesting part is really where the characters don’t line up.  

Eliot and Juno are the ones with substance abuse problems.  Eliot and Juno are the ones to reject the happy relationship when given a chance.  Both of them because they are afraid, mostly of their own inadequacies, btw.  Eliot and Juno have childhood trauma, and bad parents.  (Though no one gets close to Sarah Steel levels of bad...)

Quentin and Peter are the ones who initiate (okay if you disregard the early flirting by Eliot.  Every time something actually happens, it’s Quentin’s doing.)  Quentin and Peter both, in different ways, see themselves as heroes when they are young and are disillusioned by reality not working out that way.  (Angel of Brahma and, well, most of the Magicians, but especially “I was supposed to mean something here.”)

And the differences in how the story treats the characters...

Juno tries to end his life in a dramatic act of self-sacrifice that will save an entire planet...but he survives.  Quentin tries to end his life in a dramatic act of self-sacrifice that will save....maybe some people....and dies.  Both had a long history of depression and suicidal and death wish behavior before.

Quentin has his meds taken away and isn’t encouraged to seek any kind of help (although he sought out professional help in the past.)  Juno violently refuses to have anything to do with behavioral health professionals, but after a long road of suffering and downward spirals, the story finally forces him into some intense facing-of-his-past-traumas and he is able to move past them in a deeply cathartic way and starts making better choices for himself.   You could argue that Quentin is forced into some kind of therapeutic release at the end of S4, but as the outcome is basically “accept your death”, I’m not giving credit.  

Eliot, meanwhile, is actually forced into a consideration of his past traumas and actions (4x05) and reaches a real moment of character growth and epiphany.  He realizes he only rejected Quentin because he was afraid and determines to be brave in future and pursue that relationship (though it’s probably worth noting in hindsight that last part isn’t actually said aloud.)  So he ends up in a similar place to where Juno is at the end of S2...having grown as people, faced some of their own fears and decided to chase after things that previously scared them.  Which also means, coincidentally, chasing after love with the person they previously rejected.

Except, of course, TPP gives us a reunion of Juno and Peter, very short, but full of potential for next season, while TM kills off Quentin without letting them even say one word to each other. 

But at any rate, it’s interesting to me how Juno and Quentin start out with so much in common, but ultimately it’s Juno and Eliot whose stories parallel each other.  Some of this is because TPP has SO MUCH focus on Juno, with Peter being mostly the off-screen (off-ear?...) love interest.  And the Magicians shares so much of the traditional POV character spotlight with an ensemble cast.  

It also shows, however, how Quentin gets shunted to the side in the emotional stakes of the show.  Other than his depression and slowly increasing confidence, and the way he drives the plots, they don’t DO a whole lot with him.  The more interesting emotional stories are given to the other characters.  Quentin...doesn’t really have a past.  He has a dad...and he has current relationship drama...and he likes Fillory a lot.  I think it’s easy to forget how little material Quentin actually has because Jason Ralph does SO MUCH with it.  But most of it is body language and face acting.  

Anyway, my brain has run out of things to say, so...yes.
