"As a technical writer, you must be able to code and know how to use github."
Dude, just admit you don't actually know what the fuck I do and hand the job requirements over to someone who does.
"Degree requirements: engineering"
Bitch, you do NOT want engineers writing anything. That's why you hire my 'just one more question' ass. What the fuck.
This happens every time I job search. So many people think that the tech writer must know how to do all the things the experts do, but that's literally not the point of the job. The point of the job is that I come in stupid as a brick and bother the experts until I understand how their shit works. And then I write that in plain language for all the other people who AREN'T engineers or coders or whatever the fuck expertise you think I need to have.
My expertise is writing, grammar, audience analysis, and being able to write for that person who is so mad they kicked the box and yelled at customer service.
I promise you, if my job is made easier by learning how to pull from Github, I will learn it when I need it. If I can save time by learning to read electrical diagrams, I fucking will. I don't need expertise. I need the ability to listen to an engineer ramble for ten minutes so I can get the two bits of information I'm asking for. And I LOVE doing that.
#technical writer#job searching is very annoying today#not helped by the fact i'm waiting on a letter from unemployment so i can file for unemployment#oh and the number of companies that are sure i must be in the office all the time to do my job#i will emerge from my cave as needed thank you#all of my work is best handled by email jira comments or slack messages#so i have a trail of who to blame if something goes fucky#spoiler alert it always goes fucky

No, but... English grammar is illogical and follows broken rules that are adhered to differently over time. Reading Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens, John Steinbeck, Edgar Rice Burroughs (sigh past me), William Gibson, etc. isn't going to make rock solid grammarians. Because there are no discernable rules, and school...it sank through me like porous soil.
Listening to the History of English https://historyofenglishpodcast.com/
In my 40s helped, because I understood more the why of the illogic. But my writing style is what sounds right as a native speaker who has absorbed a lot of style tools with little comprehension (again until much later) as to whys of language.
By the way, I literally write for a living, but clarity is Jane Austen.
Fanfiction is great because you can see so clearly how people learn to write.
Some people, it's clear, learned almost entirely through absorbing the world around them. Grammar and punctuation will be all over the place, spellings are approximate, but the voice of the narration will come through so clearly. You can hear the dialect of the people around them as of they're telling the story. It's not a written story, it's a transcription of how they talk in their day to day life.
Some people learned through reading a gazillion books as a kid. Grammer and spelling will be rock solid, formatting occasionally based on the single tab of physical books rather than the double tab of online scrolling, but dialogue is often stilted and overly formal. You might notice a lack of contractions and very rigid rules they made for consistency that actually have a lot more flexibility than they think. They tend to have a fantastic grasp of sentence flow, though.
And other people formally learned how to write. This could be anywhere from taking school classes seriously because they enjoyed writing stories as a kid to literal certifications and jobs in the field. Grammer is flawless. Punctuation is triple checked. Foreign words are in italics. Characters have distinct voices. But their self indulgence is tempered by perfectionism. They know precisely what they want from a fic. Authors notes often feature mutterings about their happiness with the chapter. Kaomojis often appear! They seek a style to their writing, and it makes for some wonderfully clever plots! These are the ones most likely to get fun with formatting!
And some people.... Some people examined it all. They dissect dialogue, people watch, cross reference behaviours and compare characters to people irl. You can tell almost immediately who had formative experiences with Terry pratchett and/or ghibli, because it's these people. While others see writing as fun, expression, craft, they see it as art. Plain and simple. Sure, the grammar is occasionally sacrificed on the altar of creative freedom, and the occasional sentence might miss a full stop, but these people seem to self reflect on themselves as part of the art making process. On occasion, these people have the most masterful grasp of dialogue and invocation and hand sewn characterisations. Formatting is pretty standard because all the focus is on the actual words. These fics can be edited to the moon and back!
All of these can vary wildly in forethought and quality, and betas can often catch individual problems before they hit post, but just. Isn't it so cool? What's that one Oscar Wilde quote about every mask just being another fragment of yourself?
Did you recognise yourself?

You really do think Caleb was a dog in his past life.
Here you are, on your bed dying from the most excruciating period cramps you think you've ever had in your entire life and Caleb has his head on your uterus.
It's honestly your fault for saying the hot water bottle wasn't hot enough, and… probably yelling at him too in the process. He panicked, you could see the gears turn in his head before he made you lay down on the bed and then planted his head on your stomach. “There!” He said triumphantly, if he had a tail you're sure he'd be wagging it, he looks so stupidly proud of himself as he nuzzles into lower abdomen. “You always say ‘I'm so insufferably hot’ when we cuddle at night, so I'm your hot water bottle now.”
You sigh and Caleb's head rises and falls with your breath, you can't be mad at him, not when he's giving you those big puppy dog eyes. “If it gets uncomfortable, I'm banishing you to the couch." You mumble, relenting finally. Caleb's eyes light up and he nods into your stomach. "I'll be gentle, I promise.” Your hand runs through his hair as he places a kiss on your tummy letting out a boyish giggle. He's far too pleased with himself. You can practically hear his phantom tail smacking against the bed from how happy he was to be helping, and being this close to you.
...
Yeah you're sure Caleb was a dog in a past life.

Abilities -- Use Them or Lose Them
Oh, yes! If we are still alive and kickin’, we have abilities. My precious mom once complained to her doctor, “Doc, sometimes I just don’t want to get out of bed!” He replied, “The day you stop getting out of bed is the day you’ll be bedfast.” Those words kept her moving! Now, let’s talk about our abilities! Yes, getting out of bed is one of them! But we have others — some known and some waiting…

After 146 days, the Writer's Strike has ended with a resounding success. Throughout constant attempts by the studios to threaten, gaslight, and otherwise divide the WGA, union members stood strong and kept fast in their demands. The result is a historic win guaranteeing not only pay increases and residual guarantees, but some of the first serious restrictions on the use of AI in a major industry.
This win is going to have a ripple effect not only throughout Hollywood but in all industries threatened by AI and wage reduction. Studio executives tried to insist that job replacement through AI is inevitable and wage increases for staff members is not financially viable. By refusing to give in for almost five long months, the writer's showed all of the US and frankly the world that that isn't true.
Organizing works. Unions work. Collective bargaining how we bring about a better future for ourselves and the next generation, and the WGA proved that today. Congratulations, Writer's Guild of America. #WGAstrong!!!

Y’know, I feel like we don’t give the writers enough credit when it comes to Soren
So often when a character is the “comic relief”, they start off with dynamic personalities and then lose them as the season go on (looking at you Cat Valentine and Steve Palchuk), but not Soren
No, Soren somehow manages to jump between being comic relief and genuinely serious and caring seamlessly. And it’s all the same character, too! He doesn’t feel like he’s switching personalities they’re just other facets of who he is and it’s amazing!!!
#tdp#tdp soren#soren#the dragon prince#dragon prince#literally the creators and writers of this show are crazy#because I swear he jumps from being stupid to smart in an instant because it consistent in who he is#like he knows a lot about being a guard and dealing with hard emotions but when it comes to more technical things that he’s not interested#in he’s clueless#he could probably give hour long lectures about different work out techniques#and lead groups in emotional conversation#but the moment you ask him how taxes work he’s suddenly head empty brain smooth#and I love that for him

Duke: If the Purge was legal, would you guys kill people?
Bruce: That would be one thing I'd do... maybe once, and then steal stuff from designer clothing stores.
Dick: That’s… who would you kill?
Bruce: Joker, but only in a world where my mental health is better. You know what? Killing him wouldn’t be the right choice for me. I’d go after someone like Black Mask or Tony Zucco… or Joe Chill! Let me stop.
Bruce took a breath, making his kids laugh.
Bruce: If the Purge happened in this world… I would log into a website that handles student debt and clear it all off. Every college student, back to zero.
Stephanie: That is… am I about to cry? Oh, and I’d kill my dad.
Dick: I’d kill… Tony Zucco, since Bruce wouldn't. Yeah, and then I’d take all the good groceries from the store in a big moving truck. Jason?
Jason: I have a plan for this. I wouldn’t kill unless I desperately wanted to. In between debating who to kill, it'd be a villain, and Joker would be on that list… but Black Mask too. Before that, I’d break into a Barnes & Noble and steal so many books!
Damian: Why books?
Jason: Why not? They're free at that point. Oh, and I’d kill a corrupt CEO… five corrupt CEOs.
Duke: I respect that. If you're doing all that, can I kill the Joker?
Jason: Um… sure, go ahead.
Duke: Awesome! After that, I’d loot from a mall.
Damian: I’d snuggle with a seal, fight a villain that I truly despise, and steal a gift for Mother and Father from the mall. Cass, what about you?
Cass: Well, you know how I feel about murder, so regardless of it being legal during the Purge, I still wouldn't do it. I’d vandalize the house of someone I really dislike, go with Jason to that bookstore, break into a bank, and then end it by stealing from a jewelry store.
Damian: Why a jewelry store?
Cass: I’d get my new girlfriend a gift.
Stephanie: Oh! Girl, stop! The two-year pact hasn’t even ended yet.
Bruce sighed, covering his eyes; he hadn't warmed up to the idea of Stephanie dating another one of his kids.
Damian: Father, you can't kill Stephanie during the Purge just because she might date Cass.
Bruce: I'm not. I'm not. Just annoyed.

my maladaptive dragon age daydream is that one day the original creative team will wrest back control of the IP and then reveal that all the events of veilguard were actually a first draft written by Varric after he smoked too much elfroot.
