Smash Your Word Count Goals in 3 Easy Steps

1) Set A Goal & Write It Down
The psychology of goal setting is pretty clear. It’s what NaNoWriMo is all about, right? Research has proven that people who set goals experience higher motivation and are more likely to feel accomplished.
However, the type of goal you set makes a big difference to your efforts. Make sure that your goals are (a) clear and specific, (b) realistic, and (c) measurable.
Being clear about your goal will help you hone in on what you’re trying to achieve and ignore distractions. Make sure to write it down, as well. Research by psychologist Gail Matthews has revealed that people who write down goals are 33% more successful than those who simply set a goal in their head.
Next, be realistic. This means being honest with yourself about what you can and can’t achieve based on your other life obligations. Setting goals that you can’t achieve will only lead to frustration and, ultimately, a lack of motivation.
And last, make sure each goal is measurable. “Write 1,000 words each day” is much easier to measure than “Finish this book.” Because we all know it’s difficult to measure a book being “done”!
Breaking these goals down into smaller, simpler steps will help, too. If your goal is to write 20,000 words during Camp NaNo, break that down into 5,000 words a week, and then figure out how many words you’ll have to write each day to reach those smaller goals.
2) Practice Freewriting
Freewriting is thinking. It’s as simple — and as difficult — as that.
While every writer is unique, and there is no one way to be a writer, there are similarities we all share as humans — especially humans in the modern world — that create common obstacles to doing the things we love — like reading, writing, and yes, thinking. There are the obvious external obstacles: social media, email, the internet. But there are sneaky internal obstacles, too — the main culprit being the inner critic.
As humans, we are judgmental. It’s in our DNA. Our brains are constantly assessing situations, imagining outcomes, and making decisions. It’s part of survival at a very basic level. However, that means that when we do anything, including writing, we tend to automatically assess our actions — judging our own words, tweaking and editing them as we go along. That constant evaluation not only hinders progress, it can also stop us from ever getting started. And if we do manage to sit down to write, that inner critic creates an unconscious anxiety that prevents us from experimenting and writing down our most innovative and creative — and weird! — ideas.
We’ve all heard the advice to “write now, edit later.” Or perhaps you’ve heard writers reference “the sloppy/crappy/messy first draft.” Those are just fun ways of referencing the writing method in which you separate the drafting process from the editing process. Or, what we call freewriting.
Many people haven’t written this freely since childhood, but there’s a reason this method is taught in MFA programs. Getting your thoughts down first and revising later increases productivity and yields better, more creative work because it allows you to give your brain fully to each task. It means that when you’re drafting, you’re drafting, and when you’re editing, you’re editing. There’s no context-switching or multitasking.
So, what if you gave yourself permission to write badly at first? And we don’t just mean cheesy or with glaring plot holes — we mean typos, missing words, character names replaced by big Xs because you couldn’t remember them in the moment.
The next time you draft, we challenge you to give it a try. Just let yourself go and give your thoughts and feelings over to the act of creating. Because that’s when the magic happens. 
3) Track Your Stats

we're halfway through the year already? bullshit.
the past month(s), i noticed how i lacked discipline to do things consistently. i do have the energy to do things, but i do it sporadically. only when i feel like it. sometimes i start a task and stop midway to start another. it's multitasking, but it's not working for me.
this month i'm going to work on my discipline and consistency, make a habit out of things i want in my life and stick to it.
on another note, i put a pause on reading a little life so i can read wideacre by philippa gregory. i loved the constant princess and the way she writes strong-willed, determined, and unstoppable women within a patriarchal society. i've already made so many annotations in just the first two chapters.
im also enjoying annotating books more and reading them based on their more prominent themes. i keep seeing how other readers annotate this way and i wanted to join in. having taken english literature for 4 years (IGCSE and a-levels), i have so much to say about a book i read.
admittedly, i feel like english lit has ruined the way i read for a long time. especially english lit for a-levels. for 2 years, we've been reading poems and fiction by assessing its themes, analysing the pieces according to the context it was written, and evaluating the author's intention. we dissected literature to the point that whenever i pick up a book and read it, i'm dissecting it rather than just enjoying it. i'm trying to undo that with the books i'm reading.
although the lessons i learned from there are important in real life because it has helped me to become more critical and to see how the things authors write about are a reflection of real life (because they are). a lot of books are about people and life is about dealing with people.
but whenever i pick up a book i dont want to read it for the sake of dissecting human behaviour, the choices they make, and the broader implications of its consequences upon society. . i want to see life, beauty, and romance alongside those things.

When and how does the GIL do employee/intern performance reviews? Will we get to read some highlights?
At the Gallifreyan Institute for Learning (GIL), we believe in fostering a productive and minimally disastrous work environment. As such, we conduct biannual performance reviews to assess the contributions of our esteemed employees.
In the interest of transparency, we have compiled some anonymous excerpts from the most recent review cycle.
📌 General Employee Observations
Displays great initiative. Sometimes, too much initiative. Perhaps dial the initiative back by 12%.
Since the last review, has successfully prevented at least three (3) minor catastrophes and caused two (2).
Demonstrates strong leadership qualities. Unfortunately, those qualities are only demonstrated when securing additional meal breaks.
Would benefit from a greater awareness of personal space.
Communication skills have improved, though excessive use of sarcasm in official reports continues to be noted.
... Though we do reiterate: simply observing a task is not the same as completing it.
📌 Specific Departmental Feedback
🔬 Research & Development: Contributions to scientific discovery have been invaluable. Contributions to health and safety violations have been… notable.
🌌 Human & External Relations: Excellent at engaging with alien minds. Less excellent at remembering that their own species is technically included in that category.
🍽️ Catering: Food quality remains exceptional. Explosiveness levels continue to fluctuate unpredictably.
💻 Assistant Performance Notes: Extremely vocal about workplace conditions. Constantly demands immediate food-based resolutions. Struggles with long-term planning, though excellent at napping.
🏫 Final Notes
Overall, the March 2025 performance reviews reflected an engaged, talented, and, at times, mildly concerning team of employees. We are pleased to report only minor catastrophic incidents and a marked improvement in interdepartmental diplomacy.
We look forward to another six months of continued excellence, innovation, and, hopefully, fewer fires.

Hello! Are you aware of any resources that go in detail about the levelling system? I was assessed as level two, and online that seems to be conflated with MSN but like... I don't *feel* MSN. I can't drive, and I rather doubt I'll ever be able to work full time, but I can work part time and I can handle basic tasks like bathing n cooking n stuff. A lot of the stuff mentioned as evidence that I'm level two isn't a support need - my sensory seeking often results in self injury, but no support is going to change that, for example.
I'm just. Confused. I thought I knew which part of the community I fit into and I was wrong and I don't understand why.
You've come to the right place! I've done quite a bit of research on this. Let me go over both concepts. I'll also link wiki articles that I've started; all my research is in there with sources.
Support need labels (like MSN)
These community-defined labels are a 2020s+ thing. They are based on activities of daily living (ADLs). There are 2 types of ADLs:
Instrumental ADLs (iADLs) are tasks like food prep, shopping, managing medical appointments, and more. Non-disabled people typically learn these around their teen years.
Basic ADLs (bADLs) are tasks like toileting, grooming, and bathing. Non-disabled people typically learn these in early to mid childhood.
With that in mind, here's a summary of what I've read:
LSNs can live independently. They can do most/all iADLs and they don't require a carer or support worker. Many need some mental health help and disability accommodations at work.
MSNs can't live independently. They need help with most or all iADLs and may need a little bADL help. Carers and/or support workers are crucial for their wellbeing.
HSNs need major daily support. They need help with many or all bADLs. Some require constant or near-constant supervision.
Co-occurring conditions like paraplegia or epilepsy can influence support need labels. People may also use subdivisions like "higher LSN" if it helps them.
I am a lower MSN. My parents are my carers and I imagine supported living is in my future. While my parents are trying to get me better at tasks like cooking and cleaning, it is not working.
These labels don't ask about skills like working, masking, or making friends. You'll see diversity in there. For example, I work part-time, I mask very little, and I have no friends. But other MSNs may be quite different.
Needs are real at any label. Having unmet needs is hard for any autistic person. And not being HSN doesn't mean your needs are less important. You're just more independent.

Autism levels
Autism levels are based strictly around autistic traits (at least in theory). They are in the DSM-5 and were created by experts. 2 levels are assigned, one for social communication and one for restricted, repetitive behaviors.
You're right that these are a bit different from support need labels. These are autism-specific and decided by a professional. You can read the DSM-5 definitions for these online.
Someone at level 2 isn't always an MSN. Some are LSN or HSN. Different combinations are possible, though level 1/HSN and level 3/LSN don't seem realistic.
Not all autistic people are given levels. Not all clinicians use them and they're more popular in the US.
Different websites may sometimes make up different things. I once saw a page claiming that level 1s don't have sensory processing issues. (Sounds fake.) The DSM-5 should be taken as the source of truth.

First Meet (Pt.1)

This is the first meeting of my OC Latte with the Ghosts. A big shout out and thanks to @blacktacmopsi for allowing me to reference the MRE fic she wrote! It's my first ever fic; please be kind to me and enjoy (^ V ^ )!!!

Hiking up the trail leading to the nearby makeshift military base was not how Latte expected to spend her weekends. Well, it's not like she had any expectations for the weekends. She's always called back to the hospital for work because of a lack of nurses after the ODIN event or because the unit is understaffed. Whenever she was promised a day off, her manager called her to get to the unit and help. So when the phone call came at 6 am, blasting her out of the peaceful sleep she was in. She was surprised that her manager tasked her not with coming into the unit to help but rather with a travel shift day. 
“Some special task force is coming to the base near us for a check-up. They said it was food poisoning related.” her manager said. 
“Isn’t it usually the RN or the nurse practitioner’s job to travel out of the hospital for checkups?” Latte asked a slight protest in her voice. 
She’d much rather stay in. Yesterday, she had a shit show of a shift, and her manager promised her she’d get today off. Although, her manager says that every time she's supposed to have a day off, only to call her anyway. So, unfortunately, Latte is used to her manager’s shenanigans by now. 
‘At least she's speaking nicer to me after I threatened to quit that one time,’ Latte thought, attempting to find the silver lining. 
“…We all did a lil’ vote and decided you should volunteer!” She said as if she was congratulating Latte for winning the lottery. “Since you’re so polite, we figured a little Canadian niceness would be better for these folks!” 
“Lauren… I don’t even have words right now.”
”Sorry, but there are only 2 RNs here today, and our nurse practitioner is sick. We can’t afford to send an RN out. Anyway, I sent you the details and the location of the base. Good luck!” 
Her manager then hung up faster than you can say, ‘Labour law violation.’ She let out a sigh before she began packing her essentials. “Stethoscope, portable pulse monitor, manual blood pressure cuff, a temporal thermometer scanner, penlight, notepad, and pen…So much for letting me have the day off, huh?” She grumbled as she listed each item being shoved in her sling bag. She looked at her comfortable room before sadly walking out, locking the door behind her.
“I think I'm almost there…” Latte mutters, looking up from her GPS and taking in her surroundings. The forest around her is a gorgeous green, dewdrops glistening in the beautiful early morning light. The lush vegetation and the crunch of gravel under her boots are a refreshing change from the narrow hallways and nose-stinging disinfectant-scented floors of the hospital unit. She was even able to see a chipmunk today. 
‘It has been a while since I could take a nice walk.’ Latte smiled, pulling down her surgical mask and inhaling the crisp morning air. A gentle breeze brushed against her face. ‘Maybe today won’t be so bad after all.’
She finally arrives at the temporary base after a rather pleasant 20-minute walk. She energetically greets the two soldiers standing guard at the entrance. Latte explains she was assigned to do nursing assessments for some soldiers here—something about a bad case of food poisoning. The guards exchange a glance, confusion and suspicion evident on their faces.
“Weren’t told anything of that sort. You don’t look like the usual nurse I’ve seen from the little hospital down the trail. Name?” The older-looking of the two soldiers chimes in sternly, narrowing his eyes at her. Taking aback by the sense of hostility from the soldiers, she quickly tried to explain,
”Uh…My name is Latte. I was sent here by—" She attempted to show them her ID and explain before being cut off. 
”Latte? Like the coffee? Look, Lady, If you are messing with us. It ain’t funny.” The soldiers begin eyeing her suspiciously. 
‘Jesus, they are not bullshiting about the security here!!’ Latte panics internally. She wasn’t sure what to do. The longer she stammers for an answer, the more suspicious the soldiers are of her. So far, any attempts at an explanation have been shut down. She wanted to say fuck it and go home, no call, no show, get fired, and maybe she won’t have to answer her inconsiderate manager’s calls, and won’t need to show up to the shitty unit the next day, and won’t need to work overtime without pay again and—
”Easy fellas, we asked for a nurse.” A different voice stuns her out of the little exhaustion-fueled spiral her mind was funnelling down. Her head whips at mach speed towards her saviour—no, saviours. She took in their appearance: an older man with short white hair followed by a man with no hair, but at least he's got a beard. The pair strolled up to where Latte was standing. The white-haired one gave her a reassuring smile before nodding to the soldiers guarding the gate,
“We called for the nurse. Some of our boys aren’t feeling too great. Sorry for the mix-up.” The soldiers guarding the gate backed off with a quick ‘yes commander,’ allowing the two men to lead Latte into the base. 
“Sorry, kid. Our men are just cautious. We can never be too careful with the feds still crawling around.” The older gentleman with white hair piped up after a little walking. The bald man behind Latte grunted in agreement. 
”Ah- Where are my manners? I’m Elias Walker, the commander of Task Force Stalkers.” Elias glanced towards Merrick. “And that's Merrick, my captain.” Merrick nods at Latte. 
"It's nice to meet you, commander and captain, um...my name is Latte, Latte Wong." She often feels a little embarrassed introducing herself. When her family first immigrated to Canada,  her mom saw the word 'Latte' on a quaint little local café's menu and decided it was cute enough for her two-year-old daughter. She wishes she received a regular English name like her little brother Viktor. He was lucky their mom didn't see his name on a café menu. Sometimes she wishes he received a dumbass name, too, so he could match her, like Americano or Muffin. She could go by her birth name, Shuxin, but that would mean countless butchering of the pronunciation. Plus, as stupid as 'Latte' may sound, this name is given to her by her late parents, and she's reluctant to let go of it. 
“Latte? A special name you got there.” Elias chuckled, “That a nickname?” 
“No, commander. My parents didn’t speak English, and my mother thought it was cute?” she answered, nervousness creeping up her back as she tightened her grip on her bag strap. 
“You got family here?” Elias spoke up once more as they approached a building with a smaller gate. While Merrick went up to press the buzzer and verify their Identities, Elias looked at her, waiting for her answer. 
“It’s just me and my little brother after ODIN, commander.” She responded honestly. Elias nodded knowingly at her, sympathy and perhaps empathy in his gaze. Before anything else can be said, the gates open, allowing the men and her to enter the building. 
The two of them led her into a large meeting room of sorts, two of the three tables pushed near each other, making a larger table on the left side of the room, multiple giant screens mounted to the wall in front of the larger table, the last table on the other side of the room. The men sat around the larger table, some donning different yet similarly designed masks. Some notable men were one seated with a skull mask with his eyes closed, one in a white-streaked black mask, another with his mask on the table in front of him, a man with a buzzed head and an interesting facial hair style sitting next to a dark blond that looked similar to him. The one in the black mask and painted white streaks looked up from his computer at the sound of the door opening. 
“Ah Commander, and Merrick, welcome back.” He said, amused, “That didn’t take long.” The other men quieted their chatters and looked at their leaders, waiting for orders or explanations. Latte filed into the room after them, hiding behind Merrick’s stature. “It was a quick walk, Kick. We said we would be back soon.” Elias responds to Kick before turning to address the rest of the group.
“Boys, after the review we sent back to DOD, the heads decided that a health checkup must be completed to ensure that no one has lingering side effects from eating those MREs.” As Elias began, the faces of the men around the table contorted into disgust and pain at the mention of said MREs. Elias shot Merrick a glance, and Merrick moved to the side, revealing Latte’s short form. With the spotlight suddenly cast on her, she can't help but feel a little out of place under the gazes of these elite soldiers. But when her eyes scanned across the room and landed on a familiar-looking face, the buzzed head, mutton chop facial hair… She was stuck staring at him for a while as she jogged her memories to recall where she had seen him before. 
“The head sent us a nurse from nearby,” Merrick commented, then looked at Latte, expecting her to introduce herself. Realizing that the attention was directed at her again, she snapped out of the impromptu staring contest she accidentally held with mutton chops. 
“Uh…Good morning everyone…My name is Latte. I was instructed to come here at the last minute by my manager Lauren. I am from the hospital—The small one just by the base.” Latte stammered through her introduction, feeling ridiculous once more about her name and praying that no one was secretly thinking, ‘What dumbass name is Latte?’ Or smirking under their masks. “I understand that usually a more experienced nurse or a higher calibre nurse would be the one to do out-of-site visits, but something must have come up on the unit!… So, I was sent. My manager didn’t explain why, but I will do my best to assess you guys.” Latte attempted to hide the shakiness of her voice and smiled reassuringly at the men in front of her. 
“So…Uh...Let's get started! If it’s okay, I will set up a little questioning and assessment booth at that table on the far side of the room.” She looked at Elias, waiting for his approval. 
“Sure.” Elias agreed, and before he could offer his help, Latte sprung into action, grabbing two extra chairs, hauling them to the unused table, and beginning to set up. Elias looked back at the group, “So, who wants to go first?”

O — Organize
By this point we’ve helped people get in touch with their desires for action, thought through how collective action might address their grievances, and helped people think through the risks of taking action. It’s not a linear equation here, but by now you’ll be about ready to ask people to take up the work of organizing through a particular situation. This means asking people to take up particular commitments and to follow through on them!
Tasks are anything that will take you from A to B — making a flyer for an event, booking a space, getting other organizations to sign on to your event, organizing food and transportation, coordinating the route of a march.
This is the most direct work of organizing, and can often be the most revealing. Asking someone to take on a task demonstrates their level of commitment to the work, which is important information for an organizer to know. You’ll need to be able to know who you can rely upon to get a thing done, especially when your organizing work heats up.
It also can serve as an open invitation for someone to get involved with the work who might initially be reluctant. This can look like a lot of things. For example, a task can be tailored to that person’s interest or skills (flyer design if they crafty, or tabling if they’re chatty). It can also be more or less complex, depending on the person’s involvement. Asking someone to make a flyer is an easy way for someone to start to be involved and feel included in work.
Ultimately the idea is to build up other people’s confidence in taking up, carrying out and eventually devising tasks of their own that further your organizing work. Remember, the goal is to make yourself replaceable and everyone is better off by having more confident and capable people who can operate autonomously.
Assessing People’s Stake and Commitment
A leader: Usually empathetic, inspiring, charismatic, solid belief system, committed. Often has organic relationships in community already, and people look to them for opinions.
A supporter: Someone who generally agrees with our project, and is willing to take on small tasks. This is where we’ll spend most of our time- lifting up supporters to become leaders.
Undecided: Agrees, but not willing to act now. Maybe no time, maybe want to learn more. They may become 2’s or 4’s in the future.
Pass: Someone who fundamentally disagrees, but isn’t going to actively organize against you. Essentially a “supporter” for the other sides.

I was tagged by @melaschnie to talk about what I do on bad mental health days!! This is still v much a work in progress but I'm slowly getting better at making good choices :) this will be based on what happens on bad mental health days when I'm at uni since I have a lot more control over my surroundings and schedule then
If it's a weekday, I force myself to go into class unless I'm in a "one minor inconvenience away from sobbing/a panic attack and going to speaking class/[insert highly interactive class here] will likely cause that" kind of mood - it helps me not fall behind academically, I get some fresh air and movement from walking to uni and also a little bit of socialising even if it's just smiling and nodding at my classmates
Once class is done/on a weekend when I have free time ahead of me, if I'm still feeling rough I allow myself some wallowing time, this will usually involve listening to music and/or letting myself watch my favourite comfort content. I'll try to limit this to 1.5 hours on a weekday and 2 hours on a weekend, there's still usually stuff to be done after all
Sensory needs: I'm quite sensitive to sensory inputs at the best of times, so a mental health day will usually involve me assessing what feels physically wrong around me and fixing it, such as washing my hair to get rid of the greasy texture, wearing my seamless leggings and my softest hoodie, and carrying my fluffy blanket or a plushie around the house for an additional comforting texture
I do the bare minimum of my to do list - no matter how I feel I still need to eat, clean and do homework to avoid making things worse for Future Me, so I keep a few low-effort yet healthy meal options in the freezer for really bad days, use as few dishes as possible to minimise cleanup and do my immediately important academic tasks and no more
I force myself to spend a little bit of time with other people - we usually have friends round most nights of the week, which I'm normally not up for on a bad day. My friends are very used to me having off days at this point and are fine w me texting them "hi I know you're coming round tonight, I'll probably pop down to acknowledge your presence/be in the same room for a while but I won't say much if anything" and I'm so thankful. If it's a night where only my housemates are home, we all have pretty similar mental health struggles and are fine to sit in the living room doing our own thing and not talking much if it all, but being in the presence of each other is comforting. If it is a night where we feel up to chatting then all the better, we have a good mix of personalities so we make each other laugh a lot, which is great for the brain!!

"Leave Your Room!" Challenge - Day 2: The same coffee table (and past midnight study sesh again *sigh)
🤍- I couldn't sleep last night, so I continued doing some statistics again. I'm starting to love it! I'm addicted to Statistics now (maybe until I don't anymore, lol). And it was raining all day, so I couldn't go to the library (I ended up having a pretty long nap). That's why you see the laptop on a lil table in a dark, dimly lit room pic again (it's not the same as yesterday, I promise). Oh, and I just tamed my first Mount on Habitica today! It's a white tiger! (I love white!!)
What I did today:
Practiced Statistics
Studied 4 chapters (different subjects)
Updated June's content brief for the Growth Mindset campaign
I learned that:
Setting a time window to do an activity (e.g., work/study) rather than scheduling specific tasks works better for me. I like it more when I can think intuitively about what I should do in this session based on my mood or how fresh my mind is. Surprisingly, I did more when I did it like that than when I planned what I should do in detail.
I still don't know when I'm most productive, so I think I need to map my energy. Someone suggested doing hourly journaling. 
Setting down expectations makes me less stressed and more productive.

Why can't he simply accept he's indeed rough and bossy and just move on? Would an ENTJ react that way too if met with the same criticisms?
(Note: I don't necessarily want to him to "change", as I don't really care if he's bossy or not, but I'm not denying that he indeed can be rough with people and I told him that. But I guess, I'd expect an ENFJ to be more "receptive" and adjust his approach from that kind of feedback, and since he hasn't and blamed people instead, l got confused. If he doesn't like to be described that way, then why does he keep using the "rough" approach? Or why can't he just accept that he's that way?)

And wouldn't it make sense for Fs to be sensitive to pain, which might lead them to avoid confronting it?

When people won't change their negative behavior, it is usually because, from a purely egocentric perspective, the "benefits" of keeping the behavior outweigh the costs. In this case, his negative behavior efficiently gets him what he wants, doesn't it? Why would anyone change a behavior when 1) they believe it works, AND 2) they believe that changing the behavior would be more negative (for example, they wouldn't be able to get what they want)?

Are you basing your judgments of people on crude stereotypes? What makes you believe that the mere presence of Fe automatically makes people receptive to criticism? I suppose I don't really understand the purpose of your question. In my experience, when people ask a question like yours, it is actually a way to distract from a more important issue they aren't yet ready to confront.
For instance, you say you don't want him to change or that you don't care. However, if you really didn't care, you wouldn't flag such behavior but rather be indifferent to it or simply accept it without second thought. Is it possible that you are downplaying your feelings about it (for some reason that you might not yet be aware of)? If so, this could be the more important issue to address because emotional repression is a common issue for INFJs.
Do YOU believe that it's right to be "rough" with people and boss them around? Do YOU condone this way of treating people? If not, if you believe it's wrong, then denying the fact is going to make you feel more and more uneasy in this relationship, as you keep pushing aside your own moral values. Denial breeds anxiety. Anxiety breeds overthinking.
Instead of asking me to read your boyfriend's mind (I don't have that superpower), perhaps it's better to ask yourself about the true source of your confusion and what is really motivating you to expend energy to understand this behavior of his?
