Cheers to Wisconsin! 🍻
Wisconsin became a state on May 29, 1848, making it the 30th state to join the United States. From its roots in the Northwest Territory to becoming “America’s Dairyland,” Wisconsin boasts a rich history filled with vibrant cultures, natural beauty, and plenty of cheese and beer.
In honor of this milestone, we are pleased to present The Wisconsin Story, the Building of a Vanguard State, written by H. Russell Austin. The book explores Wisconsin's history, culture, and people, examining the social, economic, and political factors that have contributed to the state's unique identity and development. Published in Milwaukee in 1948 by the Milwaukee Journal, it was first released as a daily serial between February and March of that year.
From cheese curds to cranberries, supper clubs to state fairs, Wisconsin proudly showcases the heart of the Midwest. So, raise a glass (of local brew, perhaps) to celebrate Wisconsin’s history!

ME AND MY SHADOW
It's often in our most peaceful moments when we remember the shadows of our distant past...
cn: Hey everyone! I wanted to make this extra special chapter in response to my most liked post (How Shadow got adopted into the Robotnik family...). I thought it would be a fun idea to flesh out and had the sudden motivation to actually write it. I hope this brings you as much joy as it did me! ♡)
PREVIOUS CHAPTER: A HEART OF GOLD
NEXT CHAPTER: ???
Leaves rustled against the peaceful breeze along South Island’s countryside, the warm, late-spring sun shimmering through the foliage and casting glimmers of light below like a diamond. Flickies chirped joyously overhead, the wind catching beneath their shimmering wings as they flew high into the air. Shadow smiled, the melody of the world a soothing tune to his ears. He remained unmoving, the back of his ebony quills rested gently against his folded arms as he leaned on the tree whose shade he enjoyed. His eyes were closed, allowing him to fully take in the serenity through his other senses.
He took a deep breath.
Nothing but pure bliss.
“Hehehehe!”
“Hm?”
Shadow’s ear twitched at the sound, his eyes opening in curiosity.
“Aaah…What a perfect day…”
The hedgehog watched from where he sat as the girl threw her arms out behind her and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath with a smile. His eyes widened slightly as they fell upon the glittering heart adorning her neck, remembering her words at her birthday a week prior.
“Huh…I guess she really hasn’t taken it off…”
Shadow smiled again, happy to bear witness to such a joyful moment in his sister’s life here on Mobius.
“I hope you’re watching, Maria. I’m making others happy just like you wished fo-”
“Oh, Miss Eve! Mama is going to love her present!”
“Chao chaooo!”
“-??”
Shadow’s thoughts were interrupted by the young rabbit and her chao friend racing up beside the human smiling upon the vibrant and colorful flowerfield. He watched curiously as the human knelt down and began gathering some flowers to give to her friend.
“Of course she will, Cream! This field has the most beautiful flowers on all of South Island!”
“And the most beautiful flowers will make the most beautiful crown, right?”
“Right! It’ll be the best Mother’s Day gift she could ask for, besides you of course!”
Shadow watched as the two friends beamed at each other.
“Mother’s Day?”
He closed his eyes.
“Hm…I suppose I never had a mother…”
Memories of a distant past danced through his mind like the light from the leaves above.
“Apart from Black Doom, the only kind of parent I ever had was…”
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Professor Gerald, energy readings have stabilized.”
“Good.”
The elderly man in the lab coat folded his arms.
“Everyone prepare yourselves. Experiment 626 is nearing embryonic completion and we have no idea what this creature will be capable of once it awakens.”
“It’s only a matter of time until that happens. For now though, we should head to the boardroom to prepare for our upcoming report meeting with the President and G.U.N.”
“Of course. I will secure the lab and meet you there.”
The scientists left one by one, the professor looking back one last time before joining them.
“Hang on, Maria. We will get you the treatment you require. I promise.”
And with that, the lab was empty.
That is…except the small child stowed away along the far wall.
“Are they gone?”
A fuzzy teddy bear poked its head above the steel table, ‘speaking’ with a ‘boy’s voice.
“Why yes, Maria. I do think the scientists have all left now.”
The girl with the poofy, blonde hair popped her head above the table, her big, blue eyes sparkling in awe.
“Wooooaaaahhh…you think so, Mr. Teddy?”
She emerged fully, smiling at the teddy bear bobbing around in her left hand as ‘he’ spoke.
“By my super scientific calculations, I find it very pawsible.”
“Hehehe! You mean plausible like Papa says…”
“Oh, why I suppose so indeed.”
Maria giggled, hugging Mr. Teddy close against her poofy, blue dress as she emerged, slowly making her way towards the central tube in the dark and quiet lab. Though she was only five, she’d already received such an advanced education and could somewhat comprehend the work of the scientists who’d departed just moments prior.
“Oooh! Look there, Mr. Teddy!”
Maria pressed her left hand against the capsule, eyes sparkling as she took in the sight of the ebony creature curled into itself protectively.  Mr. Teddy rose once more on her right, bobbing around as ‘he’ spoke.
“That right there is Experiment 626, Maria!”
She smiled, “Aww…It’s just a tiny baby…”
Her smile fell.
“I wonder if…we could be friends…”
She looked down sadly as she brushed some of the fluff on Mr. Teddy’s head.
“It gets so lonely with Papa busy all the time…”
A few tears sprung into her eyes.
“If only…I wasn’t so sic–”
Maria swayed, stumbling slightly as a sudden wave of lightheadedness hit her. She reached out instinctively in an attempt to catch herself, gripping the edge of a nearby workstation. She’d accidentally grabbed a tray, however, the metal platter clambering to the ground as she slid to her knees, holding Mr. Teddy tight until the feeling subsided.
She hated when that happened.
“Nnnn…I…I think I’m okay now, Mr. Teddy…”
Maria lifted her tired eyes, jolting slightly as they fell upon a few busted tubes of liquid as well as an overturned remote. She hugged Mr. Teddy tighter, burying her face slightly in the fluff.
“Uh oh…Papa isn’t going to be happy about this…”
She pushed herself up onto shaky legs, regaining her balance before brushing herself off and heading out of the lab.
“I should go back to my room before he notices I’m gone…”
She didn’t even notice the water slowly draining from the tube behind her.
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maria released a sigh of relief as the door to her room slid shut behind her. She quickly made her way past her desk and over to her bed, which was illuminated softly by star-shaped lights hanging above. She hopped up onto the flower-patterned sheets, exhaling once more as she brushed her stuffed bear’s head floof with a warm smile.
“We had quite the adventure today, huh, Mr. Teddy? Let’s get some rest before our checkup.”
Maria flopped back against her pillows, staring up at the ceiling as she recalled the creature behind the glass once more.
“How wonderful would it be if we could be friends…”
She closed her eyes, imagining such a happy and joyous life. Maybe they could sing and dance…
…and learn together…
…grow together…
…be raised together…
Maria giggled, “We could even be siblings!”
She yawned, her mind growing weary.
“That would be…my…wish…”
“Mnnnn…”
Maria slowly awoke, her groggy eyes opening as she released a small yawn. She smiled as she slowly sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes as she reached for her stuffed bear.
“Good morning, Mr. Teddy-!!?”
She froze, her eyes widening as they fell upon a tiny, quilly ball perched upon her lap, only slightly bigger than her hand in size.
“...huh?”
She watched as the ebony ball slowly expanded and contracted in a steady rhythm, unwilling to move as realization struck.
“That’s…Papa’s experiment!”
The girl jolted in a moment of shock, sending the tiny, spiky ball tumbling off of her and onto the billowing sheets beneath. It twitched slightly before suddenly popping open, revealing an equally tiny, baby hedgehog with crimson stripes along its quills. The creature yawned before staring up at the girl.
“...”
Maria leaned close, her big blue eyes meeting those of a fiery red.
“You…You’re not dangerous at all, are you?”
“...”
The baby hedgehog continued to stare before suddenly releasing a bright, fanged smile, squealing slightly in joy. It then grabbed its equally tiny feet, rocking back and forth slightly.
Maria giggled.
The hedgehog giggled too.
It then shoved its fist in its mouth, watching Maria intently as it discovered that its hands were, indeed, not food.
Maria stifled a squeal as she leaned in closer, “You’re so cute!”
“Coot!” The creature leaned in closer as well, “Coot coot!”
“Hmm…” Maria tilted her head to the side in curiosity.
The hedgehog followed.
She then raised her hands, clapping them together.
The hedgehog followed.
Finally, she held her hand out towards the tiny creature.
It placed its hand against hers, meeting her gaze with its wide eyes as it searched for affirmation.
Maria smiled, “You love to copy me, huh? Almost like a shadow…”
“Sha-doo?”
Maria giggled, “No, shaaa-doooh.”
“Shaaaaa dooooo…”
“Shaaaaa…”
“Shaaaaa…”
“...dOH.”
“...d-dOH.”
Maria smiled, “There you go!”
“Shaaaa-dOH! Shaaa-dow! Shadow!”
“Hehehe!” She brought her forehead towards the hedgehog’s, “Is that your name? Shadow?”
The hedgehog met her forehead with its own, purring loudly with affection as it mimicked her once more, “Shadow!”
“Shadow it is then…”
Maria was happy.
Her wish had really come true.
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Sir, we have yet to find Experiment 626.”
“Then keep searching! Get Maria to one of the escape pods as well! We CAN’T take any chances!”
“W-We would, sir, except that…well…”
“It seems as though Maria has gone missing from her room. We can’t track her down either.”
Gerald froze.
“Then we have no time to lose! Hurry! Call reinforcements if necessar-”
“...nd that is the dining hall…and thaaat is the kitche-”
“Maria!”
The girl jolted, turning towards the frantic professor with a beaming smile.
“That’s Papa! Let’s go say, hi!”
“H-Hi! Hi!”
“--!!!!”
The team of scientists froze in terror as their eyes fell upon the tiny creature snuggled against the girl’s chest in her arms. Gerald ran towards his granddaughter, the lingering people remaining back should they need to call reinforcements as instructed.
Maria strolled over happily, addressing her grandfather in a sing-songy tone, “Papa Gerald, I think he likes meee…”
The professor stopped before the girl, a mixture of confusion and terror lining his features, “Maria!! What are you doing!? How did that thing escape!?” He reached for the creature, prompting Maria to hold the baby hedgehog in the opposite direction as she gasped.
“He isn’t a thing Papa! He’s Shadow!”
“You named my most dangerous experiment!?”
“He followed me and kept copying my every move!” She brought the baby hedgehog towards her face, the two of them nuzzling foreheads as she addressed him lovingly, “Isn’t that right, Shadow?”
The tiny, baby hedgehog hugged her cheeks affectionately, “Sha-Sha-dow!”
Gerald jolted, still fuming over his granddaughter’s carelessness, “And you taught it how to speak!?”
He watched them though as they continued to hug, trying his hardest not to be swayed by the creature’s unbearable adorableness. He took a breath, noticing Maria smiling brighter than he’d ever seen in her few years since being born aboard the Ark. Sadly, her mother had died during childbirth, succumbing to the very disease the small girl suffered from now. As for her father, he’d been killed tragically in a weapons’ experiment only a few months prior, resulting in the launch of the Ark as a safeguard for the public against any other failed experiments. Gerald was quickly appointed lead scientist as well as the legal guardian responsible for Maria’s wellbeing. Once that was the case, the professor couldn’t help but shift his goals from glory and recognition to protecting the surrogate daughter he loved so dearly, even if it meant he and his team performed medical experiments to try and find a cure behind the government’s back.
Seeing this level of joy this assigned bioweapon could cause though…
No.
This…living being…
This…person…
This…’Shadow’...
The tension left Gerald, his face softening as the rest of his team approached cautiously from behind, “Sir, should we take measures to recapture the bioweapon experiment?”
“...”
“...Sir?”
Gerald turned, pushing his glasses up along the bridge of his nose, “I have a terrible thing to ask of you all…something that could put all of us at more risk than we already are…”
Each of the scientists looked to one another in question before smiling confidently, “Whatever it is, sir, we’re with you.”
“Are you certain? It isn’t too late for me to discharge you home to your families if you so wish.”
“You and Maria are our family.” Everyone nodded, “We will do whatever we can to support you.”
“Then…it seems as though we gained a new member in the Robotnik family here aboard the Ark…”
Maria turned, gasping excitedly, “Grandfather, does this mean…?”
Gerald knelt down, patting the girl’s head affectionately, “Yes, my dear Maria.” He addressed the scientist behind him, “Everyone please welcome the newest member of our family, Shadow, to the Ark. Take good care of him and, under no circumstances, is the government to know of this. I fear what they may do should they ever be made aware of his existence…”
“We will see to it that Experiment 626 is reported a failure, sir.”
Another scientist stepped forward, “That’s great and all, but won’t G.U.N. become suspicious of us if we don’t report or show ANY bioweapon progress?”
“Hmm…”
Gerald smiled, “I have an idea. We can discuss the details later once Shadow has had a checkup and is settled in.” Thankfully, he had already planned to gift Maria a pet to take care of to aid in her loneliness and requested G.U.N. bring a shipment of small salamanders for ‘scientific purposes’. Surely the small girl wouldn’t notice if a few of them went missing before receiving her gift, especially now that she had Shadow to keep her company.
“Oh! Can I go with him for his checkup, Grandfather? Pleeeaaaseee?”
Gerald chuckled, “Of course, Maria. Whatever you wish, my child.”
“Yaaaay!!!”
Shadow copied her, squealing in excitement.
The scientists led the girl carrying the hedgehog along the halls with nothing but the warmest smiles, “Come along, Maria. You and your new friend can receive checkups together!”
“Hehehe! Silly, Dr. Ohtsuka! Shadow isn’t my friend!”
“Oh? He isn’t?”
“No! He’s my new baby brother!”
“Baba brubbuh!”
“I see.”
“Welcome to the family…”
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Shadow?”
The hedgehog twitched slightly, slowly reawakening from his reminiscent slumber. He glanced up, the image of a blonde girl silhouetted by a blinding light fading into his view.
“Huh? Maria?”
He squinted, rubbing his eyes slightly before refocusing his sight. The girl with the heart-shaped locket finally became recognizable along with the afternoon sun beaming down from behind her.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t think you were really asleep.”
“N-No…It’s alright…”
The hedgehog slowly sat up from where he’d been resting along the tree, shaking his head slightly as his mind fully returned to his 11-year present. As he did, the girl with the golden hair sat down beside him, curiosity lining her features.
“Were you dreaming about her?”
Shadow hesitated a moment, awkward as always in making small talk, “No…uh. Yes. I mean…it was more of a memory than anything…”
The teenager giggled slightly, “You seem really happy about it.”
The hedgehog jolted, having not realized the nostalgic smile plastered on his face. He turned away shyly, “N-No! No. Not at all…”
The girl smiled in tandem, “Sure. Whatever you say, Shadow.”
“Ms. Eve!”
The two friends watched as the small rabbit waved from the distance.
“Oh yeah! I almost forgot I came here with Cream to pick flowers!”
“Hm? What for?”
“To make her mom a HUGE flower crown for Mother’s Day! Hehe! I know she’s gonna LOVE it!”
Shadow smiled, intentionally this time, “I’m sure she will.”
Eve stood up, brushing some loose blades of grass from her figure before reaching her hand out to the hedgehog below, “Why don’t you join us?”
Shadow’s eyes widened, “Huh? Me?”
“Yes, you! Who else would I be talking about, silly!?”
“...”
Shadow paused, recalling his journey: all the pain, the suffering, the tears, the joy, and the love that led him to this moment and would continue to lead him towards the future he chose.
He smiled.
He took her hand.
“I would enjoy that…Eve.”
Maria would be proud of him.
