Batfam at the dentist HCs/incorrect quotes, please?? 🤲 I have a big surgery coming up and I'm terrified
Dick: What's up, doc?
Leslie: What are you doing?
Dick: Daffy Duck. I'm thinking of a new career as a voice actor.
Leslie: Okay but can you not do it with a mouthful of sharp objects?
———————
Cass: *brings a punch card and a knocked-out tooth*
Leslie, sighing: Here we go again.
Leslie: *stamps the card*
Leslie: Your next one is free.
———————
Leslie: *in the middle of the checkup*
Steph, getting up: Hang on, my Uber Eats is here.
Leslie: You ordered takeout to a dental appointment?
Steph: Efficiency.
———————
Leslie: You have a helmet. How did you still break your tooth?
Jason: *flashback to throwing his helmet at Dick, missing, and it bouncing back*
Jason: Enough with the questions, okay?
———————
Leslie: Ever consider braces?
Kate: I don't want any part of me to be straight.
———————
Leslie: Oh, you're early! Just check in with the receptionist and take a seat until I call you.
Bette: *goes up to the receptionist*
Bette: Checking in for Bette Kane.
The receptionist: Sorry, I don't have you down here.
Bette: Maybe try my full name? Mary Elizabeth Kane?
The receptionist: Still don't see you.
Bette: I should have an appointment for 2:00 today.
The receptionist: *typing*
The receptionist: I see you now. The doctor's right, you are early. Your appointment is tomorrow.
———————
Selina: *using cat claws as a toothpick*
Leslie: This might be an issue.

Leslie: Say "ahh."
Tim: *screams*
———————
Leslie: You're bleeding because you don't floss.
Harper, who came in after a mission: ...
———————
Leslie: —but I cannot stress this enough, it's important to wear a mouthguard for all contact sports. And some non-contact sports. And training. And patrol. And walking through Gotham. And whenever you're around the Waynes. Actually, I'm just gonna give you the box. Take your time. Pick whatever colors you want. If you need me, I'm gonna be in my office questioning my life choices.
Luke:
Luke: ...I just asked how her day was.
———————
Bruce: Are you sure there's no tooth fairy? Because the Justice League has state-of-the-art tracking system that can locate them. I really think we can form a contract to expand social programs for children.
Leslie: Just shut up and let me do my job.
———————
Leslie: Everything's looking good except for a few minor spots.
Barbara: Yeah, well, call me when they invent stainless coffee.
———————
Leslie: I recommend removing your wisdom teeth.
Alfred: But that's where I keep my wisdom.
———————
Leslie: I see you still have one last baby tooth. It should've come out by now.
Damian: Father said to keep it in.
Leslie: Why?
Damian: He wants me to stay a baby.
———————
Leslie: Cullen, you're next.
Cullen: *climbing out the skylight*
Leslie: Wow.
Leslie: That's actually impressive for a non-vigilante.
———————
Leslie: Hey, Helena. I thought you were off duty this week. How'd you knock a molar loose?
[earlier]
Students: *fighting in the hall*
Helena: Break it up! All of you go to the office! And delete that video!
[present]
Helena: I need a raise.
———————
Carrie: I don't get it. I brush twice a day AND floss. How do I still have cavities?
Leslie: What do you brush with?
Carrie: Toothpaste, obviously.
Leslie: And what do you floss with?
Carrie:
Leslie: Carrie...
Carrie: The British call it candy floss for a reason, don't they?
———————
Leslie: Well done today, Duke. Have a sticker.
Duke: Why are they all the Justice League?
Leslie: Funding comes with a catch.
Duke:
Duke: *picks the Flash*

S/O with Sleep Apnea - Leona, Jade, Floyd, Malleus
Tumblr media
Okay, so this one kinda threw me for a loop. Sleep apnea is weirdly vague treatment wise, so I had to kinda...guess how to go about this. But I hope this lives up to your expectations, Anon!
Sorry about Jade and Floyd, this is actually my first time writing them. Lol
Premise: The boys find out their s/o has sleep apnea
Words:
Leona: 594
Jade: 610
Floyd: 689
Malleus: 702
~~~~~
Leona
Leona is no stranger to daytime drowsiness, having his own wrecked circadian rhythm. Seeing you tired and maybe grumpy is like having a kindred spirit. Hell, he doesn’t even mind the snoring. It’s kind of cute; plus he can always tease you about it later.
However, the seriousness of your sleep malady becomes all too real when the lion drowsily rises to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. On his return, rounded ears note a distinct, unnerving silence. His gaze immediately honing in, Leona sights you still fast asleep on his bed—suspiciously still. A shock of adrenaline floods his system as Leona snatches your shoulders. The jostling is just enough to remind your unconscious mind to adjust your throat muscles and asleep you remain.
But Leona will not be getting anymore sleep that night. Grumbling, he tries to shrug it off and get back to bed, but the moment he suspects it’s been too long since he heard your snore, his head promptly leaves the pillow to check on you.
Whether you’re aware of the apnea or not, Leona confronts you the next day, exhausted and irritable.
This sparks the first motivated study session Leona’s had in a long time. He reads up on the condition and treatment, even during class time. He’ll be damned if he loses sleep over having to worry about you while he sleeps. No, he does not worry about you.
First off, he gets one of those mandibular splint things. Being part of the SpellDrive club…Never mind, he finds Ruggie—being part of the SpellDrive club—to help shape your new mouthguard to fit. If that doesn’t work, he’ll consider the more expensive options. Do you get a say? No. Which is why he’s starting out small.
Unfortunately for Big Kitty, other non-surgical treatments include routine and healthy habits.
Fuck.
Suddenly, alarms are much more important. On his phone, on your phone, and even on Ruggie’s phone, there are two to three morning alarms. Goodbye sleeping in. It is now mandatory for BOTH of you to attend morning SpellDrive training. Doesn’t matter that you can’t fly nor does it matter if you’re any good, Leona’s up, so you are too.
Probably the most killer part is the nap regulations. No longer are you allowed to have random naps throughout the day. They must be before 2 AM and no longer than 30 minutes. Maximum. He hates every bit of it.
By the time evening comes around on the first day, both of you are suffering, so abiding by a new bedtime is no problem. But for a while, things get worse from the exhaustion. Admittedly, Leona considers kicking you out, but the thought of losing his favorite body pillow easily throws him off that idea. So the lion sticks it out.
And his efforts pay off. As the two of you struggle through a new routine, the grogginess and irritability gradually fade. Hell, even Leona has been less grumpy as he settles in, but don’t push it. Of course, the sleep apnea never truly goes away, but you sleep better with a proper routine. And Leona sleeps better without that nagging worry ticking in his brain.
“Oi, wake up. Nap’s over. I don’t care that you’re still tired; so am I. Get up. If you don’t get up right now, you can forget about sleeping in my room tonight. I ain’t putting up with your jacked up snoring. No, I’m not lying. Wanna try me? Hey! Don’t roll back over! Ugh, stupid herbivore. Shut up.”
Jade
Jade was very surprised at the snoring. He’d heard of the phenomenon, but never heard the sound first hand. He didn’t know what to make of it, but eventually attuned and accepted that this is how you slept.
He was not aware that your brand of sleeping was…wrong?
Having ventured into his beloved mountains, Jade ends up returning from later than expected. Well informed, you’re already fast asleep upon his return. As he unpacks and gets cleaned up, a small smile etches onto his lips as he listens. Then it stops. His attention turns to find you perfectly still. Alarm quickly grows, spurring him to your side. An arm beneath you and your name on his lips is enough of a shift to clear your throat. The snoring resumes.
And Jade will not be getting any sleep. The young man resolves to observe you for the remainder of the night. His late night investigations lead him to sleep apnea. The symptoms check out: perpetual exhaustion, a smidge of insomnia, headaches, and yes, he had to concede that you could be irritable at times. Oh, and look at that, your particular snoring isn’t that normal.
From that moment on, the eel begins formulating a plan. From what he could conclude, sleep hygiene played a considerable role in the management of sleep apnea. He starts with monitoring your daily routines, taking notes on the things that need to be corrected—you know, the things you do just trying to survive the day.
After a week, he finally begins implementing his little tricks. It starts with a morning routine. It’s not jarring alarms that wake you in the morning, but Jade’s gentle coaxing until you’re up and ready. At the same time, every day. He ensures you’re too distracted for any afternoon naps, asking for your assistance with his work or perhaps doing some little activity together.
And you don’t even notice him starting to regulate your caffeine intake. Post 2 PM and you’re cut off. Whatever tea and/or coffee you drink comes decaf. Alternatively, he preempts your caffeine craving with something without the addictive substance. He knows your tastes well enough to provide something to make you forget about your caffeine deprivation.
About thirty minutes before your new, undisclosed bedtime, Jade, himself, becomes a distraction. This could be reading a book, listening to music, preparing for tomorrow, or just having an entertaining discussion with him. Whatever it is, it involves no screens for you.
In addition to your new, wind-down routine, Jade prepares the room to perfection. The bed is comfortable, it’s not too hot or too cold, no light permeates the darkness, and even a pleasant scent lulls your sleepy mind.
Thanks to your fastidious boyfriend, it’s quite easy to conform to this new routine. It helps alleviate some symptoms of your sleep apnea and does wonders for your mood. While the sleep apnea won’t be cured, Jade makes them easy to endure, even on the worst of nights. And honestly, it takes months before you even put together what he’s done.
“My dear, shall we start on the next chapter of our story? I’m quite invested in what will happen next. Hm? I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean. You think I would manipulate my lovely partner in such a way? I see. Your suspicion wounds me. Oh? Hm-hm. You got me. I wondered how long it would take for you to notice. It’s only been three months. No, no, I’m flattered you would be so comfortably oblivious around me. I’m glad you’re feeling better. That’s all the payment I need. Well, I wouldn’t say no to a kiss.”
Floyd
For like a solid week, Floyd thought snoring was the funniest thing. He’s not sure if snoring can even happen underwater, but he’s never heard it before. So needless to say, that part didn’t bother him at all. It did get him all miffed when you would get snippy with him, but he had to relent when you would complain of a headache.
One night, there’s a disaster in the Lounge and Azul keeps all the staff late until it’s clean—Floyd included. So when he gets back to his room rather late, it’s no surprise that you’re there, already fast asleep and snoring away. Just as he finishes changing and is about to get into bed, he pauses.
It’s quiet—too quiet. Lazy eyes fall across his sleeping partner. The usual snoring he’d come accustomed to is gone. You weren’t breathing. His first reaction is to reach out, calling out to you. By the arm, he shakes you enough to jump start your breathing, yet somehow not wake you. Suspicious, he watches you for a moment, waiting for it to happen again. But it doesn’t take long for Floyd to get bored and join you in bed.
He mentions the occurrence to Jade and Azul. The snoring is fine, but he’s not particularly fond of the not breathing thing. That’s kind of important for land-dwellers, right? The trio quickly discovers what sleep apnea is.
At first, Floyd lets the whole thing go. But the longer the information lingers in his brain, the more the symptoms begin to eat at him until he finally admits that this sleep apnea thing really sucks.
The sophomore gets Azul and Jade to help him figure out how to fix this. Honestly, there’s not much he can do, let alone with his own erratic behavior. But he starts with little things that he remembers.
He’s not very nice about it if he catches you napping, immediately waking you up, consequences be damned. Though he does try to make you less grumpy for it with favors and snacks.
And these snacks HAD to be Floyd-approved. Anything after dinner is confiscated and caffeine is off the table after 2 PM. And so dedicated to his task, Floyd will recklessly devour any treats unable to be saved for later, but only because he got in trouble for hurling them across the room. By multiple people. No, it doesn’t matter if it screws him over—chugging something too hot or wired and wide awake later. He’s being chaotic, but he’s doing it for you.
Lastly, Floyd is aware that how you sleep can help keep your airways clear. He acquires an extra pillow—from Azul’s room—to help elevate your head. If you weren’t a side sleeper before, you are now. Sometimes, in the dead of night, the eel just sits up like the living dead. Bapping hands assess your situation, pushing and pulling until you’re sleeping on your side, head propped up on your new pillow.
These new habits soon alter your own. You give up on naps, fed up with being violently rattled awake. You stop wasting money and effort on food and drinks you know you’re not supposed to have. You can’t even sneak any of those things because Octavanelle is full of snitches. Actually, it’s full of people afraid of Floyd, but same thing. With these regulations, your sleep schedule slowly stabilizes—it’s not perfect, but better. Even the grogginess and headaches are significantly more manageable. And Floyd is rather proud of himself about the whole thing, knowing that he’s the reason you’re doing better.
“Heeeeey, what’s that you got there? Looks like something loaded with caffeine. I don’t think you should have that. Gimme! Huh? Gross. This isn’t caffeine. Man, I was hoping for something good. Huh? Yeah, looks like you’re being good. And you have been sleeping better. So, do I get a reward? Whadya mean what for? For fixin’ your jank sleep. C’mon, at least give me something better than this decaf crap. Mmm, I guess a kiss will do—but like a million of ‘em. You better get started.”
Malleus
Malleus is fully aware you’re a rough sleeper and he adores it anyway. He knows of your general disdain of being awake and is sensitive of your frequent headaches. This man thrives on learning about you: the good, the bad, and the noisy.
As a nocturnal fae, he’s often awake well after you’ve gone to bed. It takes mere days for an incident to occur. Content in the presence of your sleeping form, he listens and takes in the confirmation that you’re here with him.
So it comes as a startle when he realizes the room is dead silent.
Fear immediately overtakes his rationale when he turns to find you perfectly motionless. Swiftly dragging you into his arms, he rushes for the door. Then freezes. In his arms you lie, still fast asleep, now snoring again.
He does not join you in bed this night, far too afraid that you might slip away while he sleeps. It nearly makes him sick, but he’s filled with relief when you awake the following day.
That’s the day Malleus learns about sleep apnea. He doesn’t like it at all. He thought he loved everything about you, flaws and all. But this is detrimental to your health and happiness and he must do something.
He seeks guidance in books and his friends. Lilia is of little help with his recommendations of hare-brained remedies. Silver and Sebek are quick to shut those down for the sake of an innocent soul. Still, with their help, they’re able to come up with a plan.
Malleus would readily fund any treatment you’re willing to try, from the smallest medical device to the most extensive surgery. As the issue at hand is not currently life threatening, he won’t push too hard for surgery—for now.
Still, other lifestyle changes are an option. This turns into a very difficult time for him as he loathes denying you literally anything. Waking you from cozy naps nearly breaks his heart. Taking away treats you’re preparing to enjoy makes him feel like a villain. He’s invariably torn between his guilt and adoration of your pouty face. Only his wishes for your well-being keeps him going.
However, his favorite part of this whole thing has to be the new bedtime routine.
It starts with closing the curtains, blocking out all outside light from coming through. The temperature of the room is adjusted to comfortably cool while the scent of sweet briar roses wafts through the air. Songs fill the silence while a gentle interruption of whatever task you had at hand brings your attention fully to him. There’s no arguing with him, not this late. And you dance. Just peaceful swaying as you talk of anything and everything. Whatever you have to say, he’ll hear it. Because this is your time together.
Just as your eyes begin to flutter and the first yawns interrupt your sentiments does Malleus send you off to brush your teeth, put in your new mouth splint, and get dressed for bed. If for some reason, you fend off sleep long enough, he’ll coax you from bed to sway again. Or perhaps you’ll sit at the window while he tells you fairy tales he was taught as a hatchling. Once you start nodding off again, he returns you to bed. He’ll repeat this as many times as he has to until you’re truly asleep.
If you opt to accept surgery, your sleep apnea is practically cured and you’ll be incredibly pampered through recovery. If not, Malleus’s efforts still pay off. Not only has your health significantly improved, but so has your mood. And any new incidents are practically non-existent. While Malleus feels your bond has become significantly stronger with these changes, he pleased that, above all else, you’re feeling better.
“Come now, my love. It’s time to put the pen down. I’ll help you with the rest tomorrow. How was your day today? I’m glad. You haven’t been having any headaches lately, have you? Hmm, I suppose that’s still better than it was. I’ll have to ensure we have more painkillers tomorrow just in case. Of course I’m going to. I have to take care of you after all. I always will.”
been thinking of teen timeline lottie — not minors at the point i'm about to mention, just what it's called 😭😭 after the rescue, she was sent to a psychiatric hospital in switzerland and received shock therapy to deal with her nonverbal-ness. ( to be fair, it was the 90's ) yes, it's fucked up, whoops, but i keep thinking of that as in maybe patient!karina ...
reader's all strict 'n is only seen ever so often when she delivers jimin her meds. pretty girl's all sedated with that vacant stare. she'll write in her journal, gesture at things — anything except use her voice. it's annoying.
being punished by more shocks even though they weren't pre-scheduled ... she knows you're doing this to piss her off, to get her to talk, even if it's just a complaint. she doesn't fall for it, just looks with those narrowed eyes as the mouthguard prevents her insides from being ruined and then spilling out.
and on the red velvet thing, i think of it like this:
irene as lottie matthews. she'd be the false prophet since she's just so pretty and it's so easy to just fall for whatever she says. how can you say no to her wide eyes as she goes on and on about how she sees things, about how drinking her blood-soaked drink will make everything okay.
seulgi as taissa turner. the skeptic who just goes along because her friend (well, girlfriend if we're talking literal ) is buying into everything irene says. even though i don't really picture it like this in other context, i do see joy as the friend due to their separate personalities. tai said it herself: "happy wife, happy life," – season 2, episode 2. another candidate could be misty quigley because of her need for importance and seulgi is so bear to the point she'd do whatever it takes to be able to just hibernate and be praised. lives for the attention despite shying away from it.
wendy as shauna shipman. i don't have much to say here, i just know she'd be morally ambiguous and do her best to turn everyone against each other. she doesn't care what happens as long as she's getting her way and doesn't even bother putting up a front. would be really complex, harboring romantic feelings for another girl and turning that into jealousy and hate to fuel her own motivations.
joy as mari ibarra. doing as told, dickriding irene. happy housewife type thing, making soup with a smile and challenging anyone and everyone who goes against irene because she's really into this 'wilderness' stuff since it's the first time she's ever had so much control. but she could also be jackie taylor since she'd probably be the popular girl who's saving herself for her boyfriend only to find out her best friend, wendy, took her boyfriend's virginity and so on — drama and everyone being jealous of her, leading to self-destruction and wendy blaming herself over it for being a bad friend.
yeri as natalie scatorccio. young and soft. doesn't believe any of this supposedly supernatural force only to end up caring for irene anyway. she'd miss her humanity, herself before she had to behave so primal. but she'd 100% have a homoerotic relationship with irene — hating on her words but clinging onto every syllable anyway. refusing her 'blessings' but second-guessing herself when she can't hunt properly without them.
xoxo, 🦌 nonnie
all of this scratches that an itch inside my brain i didn’t even know existed.
first, patient!rina, it’s so fucked up. the power imbalance, hurting her with the sole purpose of getting a reaction and yet getting none. the way she probably would write pages and pages about you on her journal, so much that if one were to pick it up wouldn’t know if she hates you or if she is in love with you— her brain is a bit fried anyway, maybe she doesn’t know either.
for the yellowjackets thing, with my minimal knowledge, i gotta agree with everything you said and also you have some amazing points like, yeah, irene is the perfect false prophet, who wouldn’t believe in the prettiest girl with the softest voice even if she is saying the most absurd things?
seulgi totally matches the happy wife, happy life thing but you mentioned her being misty as well and tbh, she would be a mix of her and taissa. again, happy wife, happy life but deep down it’s bigger than that, she does things for the need of being important, being seen.
i love wendy in complex scenarios, omg. for the much i know, i don’t even like shauna that much, all i’ve seen makes me think she’s too egotistical, but you know what? let’s go wendy!shauna, give the others problems to solve your problems, you did nothing wrong!
love the idea of joy being the #1 irene supporter but her as jackie… the not-so-one-sided romance with wendy and all the drama, i’m shaking. sure my girl wouldn’t last long and they would have a feast on her body but it happens i guess.
NOW, you have no idea of the size of my smile reading “homoerotic relationship with irene” !! yerene nation rise. don’t care if it’s show accurate or not, i’m having a blast thinking about yeri crawling back to irene’s arms in search for wise words, doubting herself after something she swears she had figured out goes out of control. maybe the prophet knows better after all.
Clothes Followup
Hi there. Professional sportswear outfitter and part-time athelete here just chiming in on how these choices are perfectly believable, in my humble opinion: #1 SHOES "sneakers" is a loose definition. but, if the character is wearing casual/lifestyle "sneakers" like jordan lows, vans, etc., these type of shoes are FLAT (not narrow running shoes). Flat soled sneakers are often preferred training shoes for mixed arts or lifting at the gym. You could wear boots, but you're sacrificing agility. As a female, I can say that a female character likely would not inflict such a handicap as BOOTS on herself. Feet are very resilient and resistant to pain and injury. Being able to move on your feet matters a lot more than protecting them does. PASS #2 PANTS. you are not punching someone's pants while boxing. and have you watched fight club? they mostly wear jeans. they're durable, wick moisture (although it feels unpleasant), and if they're fitted properly, they're not going to get in the way of your agility. Jeans are light armor if you're speaking in tabletop rpg terms. PASS #3 SHIRT. a good tshirt of a decent quality will wick moisture, will not be bulky or baggy, and will move with its wearer. tshirts are not expensive and are the best option outside a sleeveless top or topless for martial arts. Especially if you have boobs. Boxing in only a racerback sports bra is also viable, but a tshirt will provide light protection to the skin, which is a good idea in amateur boxing. If they're WEARING GLOVES, nobody is grappling anyone's shirt so there is no risk of clothes-grabbing violations happening there. If this ring is literally underground, it's probably cold. Clothes can be shed between matches, but it's often more important to be clothed appropriately so as to prevent both overheating and chills. Becoming chilled between fights is a greater danger to performance than getting sweaty is. PASS I also have questions as to the type of boxing gloves being used. Are they full padded gloves? Light knuckle pads? Do the boxers wear headgear? Mouthguards? What areas are allowed to be hit or is it a free-for-all? Maybe you think these details are mistakes, but I disagree. Half my job is punching boxes all day. Hot, sweaty, fully clothed, wearing comfortable shoes. Lots of moving around. If I am going to punch boxes (or faces) for hours, that's exactly how I'd dress. The rest of my job? Literally outfitting people with boxing equipment. Literally selling people clothing for athletics. I am also a footwear specialist. Thank you for taking the time to read this. :) -lilkittay
So, apologies in advance, lilkittay, but you're about to get dragged. This might come as a shock, but I actually have a copy of the novel Fight Club. I just found it wedged between a copy of Hell's Angels by Hunter S. Thompson, and the Demolished Man by Alfred Bester. I'm not going to try to figure out what lead to that sorting peculiarity. The book is exceptionally good, and if you've never read it, it's an easy (if somewhat unpalatable) recommendation. Stick it up there with books like Native Son, or Ivan Denisovich, in that it covers some really ugly subject matter, but discusses a problem exceptionally well. And, in the 27 years since the novel was originally published, it has proved itself fairly prescient. It's not about the violence, it is an excellent discussion on the underlying psychology of toxic masculinity.
Now, the last time I mentioned Fight Club, someone immediately piped up with, “you've lost all credibility.” That's their problem, but I didn't actually define it, and it is a term that gets thrown around without being defined. Toxic masculinity refers specifically to an individual who cannot engage with their own emotions, particularly painful ones, in a healthy way, because they view those behaviors as effeminate. As a result, they respond aggressively and, or, violently. That's the toxic part. You get dumped. Your pet dies. You get passed over for a promotion at work. And, instead of dealing with that in a healthy way. In any healthy way. You go out into the world and try to make someone else suffer. That is toxic.
Unfortunately, Fight Club is not the grown up version of Calvin and Hobbes, though that is an amusing fan theory, and something that holds together better in the film thanks to Brad Pitt's costuming decisions.
I'm saying all of this to point out, the characters in Fight Club have no idea how to fight.
More than that, jeans are not light armor. Motorcycle leathers? Sure, those would be light armor. In fact, I'm pretty sure they're described as light armor in D20 modern. But, the only place I'd expect to see denim categorized as light armor is a game that used, “light armor,” for mage gear, “medium armor,” as rogue's leather and chain, and, “heavy armor,” as warrior gear. Which is to say, yeah, that's not how that works at all.
The problem with jeans as armor is, they're really bad at it. Someone with a crowbar? Yeah, jeans aren't going to do anything about that. Someone with an axe? I've heard about the aftermath, it was not pretty. Against a sword? Nope. Against a knife? Personal experience says the knife will win without issue. In an underground fighting arena against someone driving a shin kick into your knee? Yeah, your jeans may look fine after the fact, but you're probably not using that leg again anytime soon.
But, that RPG comment made something click together a little, so back to footwear for a second.
Why would someone wear boots? Now, personally, I wear motorcycle boots in my day to day life. Not because I'm a rider, but because I find them more comfortable and convenient than normal dress shoes, and so long as I keep them buffed out, they pass for men's dress shoes at a glance. The interesting thing about this is that my heel has a wide, flat, block of wood under it at all times. If it was a matter of life and death, I could probably grind off a significant chunk of my heel bringing a bike to a stop without suffering any injury. Now, I bring this up, because driving 200-300lbs of force behind a sharply edged wooden mallet into your unarmored instep will not improve your agility.
In the real world, armor doesn't work like D&D. There's no equivalent exchange between mobility and being able to soak a hit. (And if you think there's an irony in substituting a term from one RPG for another... well, yeah. You're not wrong.) If you think someone's going to stomp on your foot, bring steel toed boots. What you lose in agility today, you make up for in your ability to walk without a cane tomorrow.
The paradox of humans is that we are both stupidly resilient, and horrifically fragile, at the same time. Now, at this point, I do want to say something genuinely nice to you, even if it sounds a tiny bit condescending. You've never looked at another person as 150-250lbs of ambulatory meat and considered the best way to take them apart with your hands. And you know what? That is a good thing. Embrace that, and don't let go, because never finding yourself in that kind of a place is a credit to you, and the world you've been able to live in.
All of that said, fighting another human being is not a workout. It's engineering. You're looking at an organic machine with roughly the same parts and pieces you have, and your goal is to make that machine stop thrashing around, screaming, and leaking on everything, before it does the same to you. It's not better. It's not worse. It's different, and it comes with different considerations. You don't dress to look good or stay comfortable, you dress to avoid life altering injuries if at all possible.
Competitive fighting does land at a meeting point of these two considerations however. The fighter wants to come out intact, the sponsors want good show, one that will draw an audience. This leads to things like fighting in a sports bra. Yes, it may be the most, “agile,” option, but if you're going to be in a fist fight, a heavy leather jacket, preferably one with fiberglass plates may not breathe, but it will take far more abuse than your body can. (Actually, I think sometimes the inserts are made out of memory foam these days, which should also take a hit pretty effectively, especially against an unarmed foe.)
This isn't a major issue, but it is something to consider, when thinking about the temperature of the arena, it's important to remember that human body heat in a crowded space is somewhat cumulative. So, a room that starts out at around 60 degrees, could easily warm up to a comfortable temperature once the spectators are present. There's actually consistent math for calculating what you should set the thermostat for in an amphitheater when it's unoccupied so that the temperature is comfortable when the seats are filled, but I can't remember the numbers, and can't find it on short notice.
You do bring up a good point, the original Anon did not specify what kind of gloves were used. I assumed those were nominally regulation boxing gloves, but those could be something like the UFC gloves from a couple decades back, that left the fingers exposed while armoring the knuckles. The armor on those gloves allowed the wearer to inflict all kinds of horrific injuries on one's foes. In an event Michi is quite happy to recount, her younger brother almost lost an eye to a skull fracture from one of those during a poorly supervised sparring bout. It's fairly credible to suggest that an illegal fight club might use those simply to excite the crowds with actual bloodshed.
Now, as someone who has worked in shipping, I know full well that sometimes boxes do hit back. However, they are the exception rather than the rule. There's nothing wrong with practicing on punching bags, but boxes aren't trying to break you. At worst, they may just want to take a nap on the floor without regard to whether you're in the way or not. Live opponents? They're looking at you as however many pounds of meat machinery, and trying to end you. Looking good doesn't make their job harder, but armoring up does.
Anyway, like I said to the original Anon, nothing in their explanation was outright wrong. A lot of it was non-optimal, but not to such a degree as to shatter belief. The mistake you're making, and I really do say this with respect, is that you're looking at it like any other physical activity. As I said, combat is not a work out. Combat as a hazardous environment beyond the reach of OSHA. You wear protective gear (if you can) because that protection may be the difference between walking out alive and (basically) unharmed, or never walking again. You wouldn't (or at least, really shouldn't) take a bike out on the freeway at 60mph in jeans and a tees, you really don't want to get in a fight wearing them either.
Hi. vivi!!!
I know you're writing your hockey Leon fic right now, and I thought I could offer a little somethin-somethin. When I was a lot younger, I used to play hockey recreationally. I cannot emphasize enough how important mouth guards are. I mean, I know in fanfiction, it probably wouldn't matter because you don't want to describe the fact he has a thing in his mouth. But, I think it's very useful to know, if you didn't already.
Hockey players are very aggressive because their adrenaline is high and they brain is releasing a lot of chemicals. This also prevents them from feeling just how painful pain is. I was never hurt when I played hockey, but I know a guy who didn't realize he'd hurt himself until after he got off the ice. I think only very severe injuries are noticed, but a split lip, a broken knuckle, things like that aren't painful until the brain calms down.
The first time you break a bone is the most painful. Every bone after that is a little easier. Still is agonizing pain, but I know for a fact I cried less when I broke my second bone than I did when I broke my first. Don't forget to reset bones, 'else they won't heal properly!
I don't know if this helps at all, but I wanted to try to help anyway! You're the best!!
All the love,
Batsy 🏒
ARE YOU AN ANGEL SENT FROM HEAVEN?? you just saved me so much research 😭
that is SO COOL you did hockey when you were younger!! I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE MOUTHGUARD THING!! i know about mouthguards in boxing but i didn't know they were that important in hockey. i'll def incorporate them in the fic so i don't look more illiterate about the sport than i already am 🤧
i am tucking the aggressiveness and delayed pain response into my back pocket for undisclosed reasons. that was very very helpful :3 mwahwhaha
and AHHHH i'm sorry to hear about the broken bones!! i hope yours were reset properly and healed better than new :) <3
THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR THE TIPS!! i'll be back to bother you about more hockey specifics down the line, this fic is going to be a long haul </3 but i'm so freaking excited. i hope i do your sport justice!!!
A Beginner’s Guide to Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a dynamic martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Known for its emphasis on technique over strength, it’s an excellent choice for individuals of all ages, from young beginners to adults. Whether you’re interested in youth martial arts classes, kids’ self-defense training, or simply learning a new skill, this guide will provide you with the tips and gear essentials to start your BJJ journey.
Tumblr media
Understanding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
What does BJJ mean:BJJ stands for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art that was derived from Judo and further developed in Brazil. An emphasis on controlling and submitting opponents through joint locks and chokeholds. Because BJJ relies on technique and strategy, it has become a common inclusion in many children’s self-defense classes and junior BJJ classes.
In fact, many youth martial arts classes include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) in order to help children learn self-discipline, confidence, and problem-solving capabilities. As a rookie, if you understand the philosophy at the heart of the art — that ability, not raw force, is key — it can help ease your entry into this thrilling realm.
Tips for Beginners
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can seem intimidating to begin, but with these tips, we hope to ease the way:
Start with a Positive Mindset
So, come in with a mind that is open and a will to progress in each class. You’re allowed to feel overwhelmed during your initial foray into this new system, but the most important factor is perseverance; the more you practice, the easier it’ll get.
Focus on the Basics
Avoid the temptation to learn advanced techniques. A strong base is made of consistently winning the most fundamental exchanges, like escapes, sweeps, and basic submissions.
Ask Questions
This is where coaches and senior students come to play. If you’re uncertain about a specific technique, be brave enough to ask.
Practice Patience
Progress in BJJ takes time. Even note the little wins like figuring out a certain move or getting out of a tough position.
Consistency is Key
In order to improve, it is important that you attend regularly. And aim for two classes a week so you build muscle memory and can be as great as you were before!
Gear Essentials for Beginners
Having the proper equipment will help guarantee safety and comfort throughout training. Here’s what you will need to begin:
Gi (Kimono)
The gi is the traditional uniform of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Find a light-weight, durable gi designed for BJJ. Make sure it’s fitted, but free to move.
Rash Guard
Tops: While not required, a rash guard slipped under your gi can help prevent mat burn and keep sweat away from your skin.
BJJ Belt
A beginner wears a white belt. As you advance and gain higher levels of skill and knowledge, you will earn belts.
Mouthguard
Especially during sparring, you want to preserve your teeth. Opt for a durable, custom-fitting mouthguard.
Optional Gear
No-Gi Gear: If your academy does no-gi BJJ, you will need athletic shorts and a compression top.
Knee Pads — Helps prevent joint soreness in grappling.
Water Bottle — Hydration is vital during hard training.
Before enrolling kids into junior BJJ lessons, or youth grappling classes, make sure their gear is properly fitted and meets the safety standards.
Frequently Asked Questions and How to Solve Them
If you’re a beginner at BJJ, you’ll come across these problems. Here’s how to tackle them:
Feeling Overwhelmed
Solution: Focus on the class on one or two techniques and work on them at open mat.
Physical Fatigue
Solution: Start with short workouts and gradually build endurance. Mix in some light cardio exercise with your training.
Fear of Sparring (Rolling)
Solution: View sparring as information gathering. Go slowly and pay more attention to using techniques than to “winning.”
Plateaus in Progress
Solution: Accept that plateaus are a normal part of the process. You are up to October 2023, ensure you usually to new techniques and request feedback from mentors.
Injuries
Solution: Pay attention to your body, use good form, and listen to your body for rest and recovery. Many kids’ self-defense programs incorporate lessons on safe grappling techniques to avoid injury.
Finding the Right Academy
Thus the next step you have to take in your jiu jitsu journey is to choose the right academy. Here’s what to look for:
Qualified Instructors
A good teacher is knowledgeable, patient, and relatable. They must have experience with teaching beginners and nurturing a positive atmosphere.
Beginner-Friendly Classes
Now, search for academies that provide dedicated classes for beginners; youth martial arts classes, children’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs, etc.
Community and Atmosphere
The academy ought to be a warm and inclusive place. If the training environment is positive, learning becomes fun.
Trial Classes
Most academies provide a free or discounted class to try out. Make use of these to determine whether it’s a good fit for you or your child.
Conclusion
In this article, I will help you with some beginner tips on starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. By learning the basics, investing in good equipment, and sticking to it, you will grow in confidence, fitness and skills that will transfer off the mat. Youth Grappling classes or junior BJJ lessons offer a great introduction for young beginners.
Whether studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self-improvement or learning and training as a family, enjoy the journey and take pride in each new accomplishment. Embrace the art and allow it to transform you — one roll at a time.
Lost Filling or Crown: If a filling or crown comes out, it can expose sensitive parts of your tooth. An emergency dentist can provide a quick fix to avoid pain and further damage.
Bleeding Gums: While some gum bleeding is normal, if it's excessive or doesn't stop, it's important to seek emergency dental care. It could be a sign of gum disease.
Swollen Jaw or Mouth: Swelling in the jaw or mouth can indicate an infection, such as an abscess, which needs immediate attention.
The Benefits of Visiting an Emergency Dentist
Preventing Further Damage: Quick action can often save a tooth and prevent the need for more extensive dental work in the future. Tumblr media
As a patient with dental implants, caring for your oral health is crucial for their longevity. Let’s explore essential practices, avoid harmful habits, and understand the significance of a balanced diet, all aimed at maintaining the health and durability of your tooth replacement.
Dental implants are a remarkable answer for restoring your smile’s natural beauty and function. Whether you’ve recently undergone dental implant procedures or are considering teeth implants, ensuring their longevity is a shared goal. At Dental Therapy in Phoenix, AZ, we understand the importance of providing comprehensive guidance to support your implant health journey.
1. Avoiding Harmful Habits for Dental Implants:
Your dental implants can survive the test of time, but certain habits can compromise their longevity. We’ll discuss common pitfalls like smoking, teeth grinding, and improper oral hygiene techniques, providing practical tips to steer clear of these potential hazards. At Dental Therapy, we believe in empowering our patients with the knowledge to protect their investment in a beautiful, functional smile.
One of the first steps toward ensuring the longevity of your dental implants is steering clear of harmful habits. Patients at Dental Therapy are often advised to:
A. Quit Smoking:
Smoking can hinder the healing process and intensify the chance of complications. By quitting smoking, you contribute to the overall health of your dental implants.
B. Limit Caffeine and Stain-Inducing Foods:
Consuming excessive caffeine and foods that stain can impact the aesthetics of your cosmetic dentistry work, including dental implants. Moderation is key to maintaining a bright, natural-looking smile.
C. Mindful Chewing:
Avoid overly hard or sticky foods that could possibly damage your dental implants. Opt for a diet that is gentle on your oral health.
2. Protecting Dental Implants During Physical Activities:
Life is meant to be lived to the fullest, including engaging in physical activities. However, it’s crucial to safeguard your dental implants during sports or other energetic pursuits. Our guide will offer insights into selecting the right mouthguard, addressing potential risks, and ensuring your implants stay secure and intact. At Dental Therapy, we understand the joy that comes from an active lifestyle, and we’re here to support you in preserving your dental health.
Your active lifestyle is important, but protecting your dental implants during physical activities is equally crucial. At Dental Therapy, we recommend:
A. Wearing a Mouthguard:
Wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard can safeguard your dental implants from potential trauma if you engage in contact sports.
B. Avoiding Teeth-Related Activities:
Refrain from using your teeth as tools, whether it’s opening packages or biting into hard objects. Such habits can put unnecessary stress on your dental implants.
3.. Importance of a Balanced Diet for Implant Health:
A varied diet contributes to your overall well-being and plays a significant part in preserving the health of your dental implants. Patients at Dental Therapy are encouraged to:
A. Calcium-Rich Foods:
Ensure your diet includes calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified cereals to support the strength of your jawbone.
B. Vitamin D Intake:
Vitamin D is essential for bone health. Incorporate sources like fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified foods to promote the longevity of your dental implants.
C. Adequate Hydration:
Staying hydrated supports overall oral health. It aids in saliva production, which, in turn, helps prevent cavities and maintains a healthy oral environment.
At Dental Therapy in Phoenix, AZ, we believe patient education is fundamental to achieving and maintaining optimal oral health. By following these guidelines and seeking regular check-ups with our experienced dentists, you can enjoy the long-lasting benefits of your dental implants.
Best Mouthguards for Different Ages: Protecting Smiles from Kids to Adults
In the world of sports and physical activities, it is crucial to prioritise dental protection. Mouthguards play a vital role in safeguarding our teeth and smiles from potential injuries. Different age groups, from kids to adults, require specific mouthguards to ensure optimal protection.
Choosing the right mouthguard is essential to provide maximum comfort and safety. This blog post will explore the best mouthguards in Melbourne suitable for different ages and highlight their features and benefits.
Mouthguards for Kids
When it comes to children, mouthguards are a must during sports activities. Kids are more prone to accidents and injuries due to their developing motor skills and lack of coordination. Parents should invest in high-quality mouthguards to protect their teeth from potential trauma.
There are two types of mouthguards available for kids: custom and boil-and-bite. Dental professionals individually make custom mouthguards and offer the best fit and protection. On the other hand, boil-and-bite mouthguards can be moulded at home by boiling them in water and then biting into them to achieve a personalised fit.
When selecting a mouthguard for kids, it is important to consider key features such as comfort, durability, and ease of cleaning. Look for mouthguards in Melbourne that are BPA-free and have good shock absorption properties.
Mouthguards for Teens
As children transition into their teenage years, the need for mouthguards remains crucial. Teenagers are often involved in more intense sports activities, increasing the risk of dental injuries. Additionally, teenagers with orthodontic appliances or braces require special mouthguards to protect their teeth and appliances.
Specialised mouthguards tailored to teenage athletes' needs are available in the market. These mouthguards offer extra protection and comfort, ensuring that teenagers can focus on their performance without worrying about dental injuries. Some top mouthguard brands suitable for teens include Under Armour Armour Fit Mouthguard, Shock Doctor Braces Mouthguard, and Venum Challenger Mouthguard.
It is essential to consult an orthodontist when selecting a mouthguard for teenagers with braces. They can guide the most suitable options and ensure proper fit and protection.
Mouthguards for Adults
Even as adults, dental protection should never be overlooked during sports and recreational activities. Adults can face potential dental issues such as chips, fractures, and tooth loss. A mouthguard can cushion and minimise the risk of such injuries.
Tumblr media
Various types of mouthguards are available for adults, depending on their specific needs. Custom-fit mouthguards, made by dental professionals, offer the highest protection and comfort. They are individually designed to fit the unique contours of an individual's mouth, offering superior fit and stability.
Night guards are another type of mouthguard suitable for adults. They are primarily used to prevent teeth grinding and clenching during sleep, which can lead to dental issues. Night guards are made from soft materials and offer comfort while protecting the teeth from grinding forces.
Some recommended adult mouthguards include Shock Doctor Pro Mouthguard, Venum Predator Mouthguard, and SISU Max 2.4 Mouthguard. These mouthguards are known for their durability, comfort, and excellent shock absorption properties.
Denture Wearers and Mouth Protection
Denture wearers face unique challenges regarding mouth protection during physical activities. Traditional mouthguards may not fit properly over top denture Melbourne, causing discomfort and potential damage to the dentures.
Specially designed denture-friendly mouthguards are available to address this issue. These mouthguards are constructed with a unique design that accommodates denture Melbourne comfortably while providing adequate protection to the natural teeth.
Denture-friendly mouthguards are made from flexible materials that adapt to the shape of dentures and natural teeth. They offer a secure fit, preventing movement or displacement during physical activities.
Conclusion
Dental protection through mouthguard usage is of utmost importance across different age groups. From kids to adults, mouthguards in Melbourne provide the necessary cushioning and shock absorption to prevent dental injuries. By choosing the right mouthguard, individuals can ensure maximum comfort and protection. Whether it's for kids, teens, adults, or denture wearers, numerous options in the market cater to specific needs and preferences. Prioritising dental protection through mouthguard usage is a simple yet effective way to safeguard our smiles and maintain oral health.
I have some more advice to add here: HOW you brush and use mouthwash is as important as products. You should always floss/interdental clean first, followed by brushing, then mouthwash. Try to leave a few minutes between brushing and rinsing, and if possible keep (some of) the toothpaste foam in your mouth while you wait. This is to give the fluoride longer to ~take~. I like to do my skincare stuff during this part.
I know from experience not everyone can tolerate flossing for various reasons, but please consider investigating other options for cleaning between your teeth. A lot of grief arises from damage to enamel here. All of these products are available in the UK but I'm not sure about anywhere else, sorry.
Tumblr media
I use these things: interdental brushes by TePe. They come in many different sizes, some dentists carry them and might be able to tell you what size you need. They are more effective than floss at cleaning below the gumline and are especially important if you have wear a mouthguard/retainer of any kind. It takes a lot of getting used to the sensation, but you really notice how much cleaner your mouth feels if you use them consistently. Also worth considering: water picks.
Tumblr media
Corsodyl — a brand you might know for their antiseptic mouthwash, often recommended for active gum infections — now have a range of alcohol free daily mouthwashes containing a smaller amount of the same antiseptic, Chlorhexidine. If you often wake up with bad breath or your mouth feeling a bit nasty, this stuff is your friend. It also contains fluoride for further tooth strengthening. It does not burn the way most antiseptics do.
On a semi-related note: if you find some dental products irritate your mouth but you don't have mint sensitivity: check the ingredients for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate. They are a foaming agent in some toiletries but sensitivity/intolerance is relatively common.
EDIT: forgot to add that this other Sensodyne product, Pronamel Intensive Enamel Repair is the one my dentist recommends. I stopped needing prescription fluoride toothpaste since switching to this.
Tumblr media
Okay listen I have another disability related thing that’s important!!
If you have any disabilities linked to tooth decay/erosion, through direct cause or secondary symptom, it is vital that you get one or both of the following items: Sensodyne toothpaste and enamel repair mouthwash
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This includes health conditions such as acid reflux, diabetes, thyroid conditions, fibromyalgia, chronic pain & mental illnesses such as depression that create poor hygiene routines, sensory issue disorders like autism and ADHD, and any health condition that causes frequent vomiting / increased stomach acid, including eating disorders and migraines.
All of these disabilities will erode the enamel of your teeth, not only opening you up to cavities but making it very easy to chip your teeth from such simple things as biting the wrong way on the tines of a fork. (I’ve chipped my teeth at least 4 times this way).
The toothpaste on the left here (sensodyne pronamel) is gentle on your teeth, won’t cause painful sensations from any extreme mint flavor, and will even protect your gums if they’re sensitive from any of these conditions.
The mouthwash on the right (Crest enamel repair) will, as it says, repair your enamel — which is marvelous, because the technology to repair your enamel at all is relatively very new to society! — but it is most importantly non-alcoholic. Meaning that it works well as a once-a-day rinse without any of the burning sensations of antiseptics that typically discourage people with sensory issues from taking care of their teeth.
I know remembering to do these things every day can feel like a lot when you’re sick and exhausted, but I promise a collective three minutes out of every day is going to save you an incredible amount of pain and money in the future. If your teeth are susceptible enough to rot, you can actually die from infection. And as they say, with how little insurance actually covers dental —
Not brushing your teeth??
In THIS economy???
A Family-Centered Approach to Dental Care
At Compassion Dental Care in Pomona, NY, the philosophy is simple: every smile matters. From toddlers cutting their first teeth to seniors seeking restorative solutions, the clinic offers a holistic and inclusive approach to oral health for every age and stage of life.
Family dentistry isn’t just about treating different age groups—it’s about fostering lifelong dental habits, building trusting relationships, and delivering consistent, high-quality care under one roof. For busy families in Pomona, this all-ages dental model is both convenient and deeply reassuring.
What sets Compassion Dental Care apart is their understanding of each life stage's unique oral health challenges. Children need gentle, educational visits. Teens often require orthodontic guidance. Adults juggle preventive care with cosmetic improvements, and seniors face issues like gum disease or tooth replacement. By offering a continuum of care, the clinic ensures that your family’s dental needs evolve with you—seamlessly and with compassion.
Pediatric Dental Care: Building Strong Smiles from the Start
Good oral health begins early. That’s why Compassion Dental Care places a strong emphasis on pediatric dentistry—creating positive first impressions that set the tone for a lifetime of dental health.
From the age of one, children are welcomed into a warm, playful environment where they can feel safe. The dental team uses kid-friendly language, colorful tools, and distraction techniques to ensure every child feels relaxed. During checkups, the team focuses on gentle cleanings, cavity prevention, and education on brushing and diet.
Fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and developmental assessments are common components of pediatric visits. These preventive measures are essential in protecting young teeth from decay and identifying potential orthodontic needs early on.
Parents are considered partners in the process. The staff encourages questions, offers tips on weaning from pacifiers or thumb-sucking, and provides guidance on creating effective home care routines. It’s not just a visit—it’s an empowering experience for families learning how to raise healthy smiles.
Dental Services for Teens and Adults: Balancing Aesthetics and Wellness
The transition from childhood to adolescence brings new dental priorities. Teens might need orthodontic evaluations, wisdom teeth assessments, or treatment for sports-related dental injuries. Adults, meanwhile, often seek services that combine prevention with aesthetics.
Compassion Dental Care caters to this age group with services such as Invisalign®, dental cleanings, fillings, and cosmetic enhancements like teeth whitening. Regular checkups during these years are vital, especially as diet, stress, and lifestyle habits evolve and impact oral health.
Education doesn’t stop after childhood. The dental team discusses stress-related conditions like bruxism (teeth grinding), the importance of mouthguards for athletes, and how to manage oral hygiene with busy schedules. For adults, conversations may include early signs of gum disease, cosmetic concerns, and how oral health impacts systemic wellness.
Whether you're a college student needing wisdom teeth removal or a busy parent scheduling cleanings for the whole family, Compassion Dental Care adapts to your stage in life, keeping your smile strong and your health in check.
Specialized Care for Seniors: Comfort, Function, and Dignity
Senior dental care requires a thoughtful, adaptive approach—one that Compassion Dental Care delivers with expertise and empathy. As we age, oral health challenges can include dry mouth, receding gums, missing teeth, or poorly fitting dentures. The team offers restorative and preventative care designed to maintain function, aesthetics, and overall quality of life.
Dental implants, bridges, and dentures are available to help seniors regain confidence and chew properly. Gum disease treatments and bone health assessments are critical services that preserve oral function and prevent more serious complications.
What truly sets the clinic apart is their attention to comfort and dignity. Appointments are unhurried, caregivers are welcome to attend, and treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s overall health and medication profile.
Moreover, the staff is trained in working with patients who may have cognitive or mobility challenges. Accessibility and patience are top priorities—ensuring that all patients, regardless of age or condition, feel supported and cared for during every visit.
Why Families in Pomona Choose Compassion Dental Care
Compassion Dental Care isn’t just another dental office—it’s a community hub where families return year after year. The continuity of care, from childhood to retirement, fosters deep trust and unmatched familiarity.
TMJ Disorder Treatment for Jaw Pain, Clicking, and Locking
Do you often feel discomfort while chewing, hear clicking sounds in your jaw, or experience jaw locking when you yawn or talk? These are common symptoms of TMJ disorder—a condition that affects the temporomandibular joint, which connects your jaw to your skull.
TMJ issues can affect your ability to eat, speak, and live comfortably. But the good news? With the right TMJ disorder treatment, most people can find lasting relief and restore normal jaw function.
What Is TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) acts like a sliding hinge, allowing your jaw to move up, down, and side to side. When this joint becomes irritated or misaligned, it can cause:
Jaw pain or soreness
Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds
Locking of the jaw
Difficulty in chewing or opening the mouth
Headaches or earaches
TMJ disorder can stem from various causes, including teeth grinding (bruxism), stress, arthritis, jaw injuries, or poor posture.
Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore
While an occasional jaw click might not be alarming, persistent symptoms may signal a deeper issue. Look out for:
Chronic or sharp jaw pain
Frequent clicking or popping with pain
Jaw locking, especially in the morning
Pain spreading to the ears, neck, or shoulders
Tension headaches linked to jaw movement
If you notice one or more of these symptoms regularly, it’s time to explore your TMJ disorder treatment options.
Effective TMJ Disorder Treatments Available Today
Treatment for TMJ disorder usually depends on the severity of your symptoms and the underlying cause. Here are the most commonly recommended approaches:
1. Conservative Therapies (Non-Surgical)
Physical Therapy: Special jaw exercises and stretches can reduce tension and improve joint mobility.
Custom Splints or Mouthguards: These prevent grinding and help realign the jaw during sleep.
Hot/Cold Compresses: Applying heat or cold can reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
Myofunctional Therapy: Focuses on improving tongue and jaw muscle function.
Lifestyle Changes: Stress reduction, posture correction, and dietary adjustments can make a significant difference.
These non-invasive methods are often the first step in any TMJ disorder treatment plan.
2. Medical Management
Medications: Anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, or low-dose antidepressants may help relieve pain.
Trigger Point Injections: Used to target specific areas of muscle tension causing TMJ symptoms.
Botox Injections: Can relax the muscles around the jaw, offering relief for chronic tmj pain treatment.
3. Surgical Options (Only for Severe Cases)
If conservative methods don’t offer relief, procedures such as arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, or open-joint surgery may be recommended. However, surgery is usually considered a last resort.
How Long Does TMJ Treatment Take to Work?
Most patients begin to see noticeable improvement within 2 to 3 months of starting therapy. However, the timeline may vary depending on the severity and the treatment method used.
Tips to Support TMJ Recovery at Home
Avoid chewing gum and hard or chewy foods
Maintain good posture while sitting and sleeping
Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation
Stick to the treatment plan prescribed by your TMJ specialist
When to See a TMJ Specialist
If your symptoms are interfering with your daily life, it’s important to consult a professional who specializes in TMJ disorder treatment. Early intervention can prevent the condition from worsening and reduce the need for invasive procedures.Jaw pain, clicking, and locking don’t have to become a part of your routine. With the right tmj pain treatment, you can enjoy better jaw function, reduced discomfort, and improved quality of life.
Whether you’re just starting to notice symptoms or have been struggling for a while, exploring the right TMJ disorder treatment options can be the first step toward long-term relief.
Understanding Tooth Sensitivity: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options
Tooth sensitivity is a common dental condition that affects millions of people worldwide. If you’ve ever experienced a sharp, sudden pain when eating ice cream, sipping hot coffee, or brushing your teeth, you may be dealing with sensitive teeth. While tooth sensitivity can range from mild discomfort to severe pain, it is often a sign of underlying dental issues that require attention.
In this blog, we will explore what tooth sensitivity is, its causes, symptoms, preventive measures, and the most effective treatments available.
What is Tooth Sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity, also known as dentin hypersensitivity, occurs when the protective layers of the teeth—enamel and cementum—are worn away or damaged, exposing the underlying dentin. The dentin contains microscopic tubules that lead to the tooth's nerve center. When these tubules are exposed, external stimuli such as heat, cold, sweetness, or acidity can trigger nerve responses, causing a sudden, sharp pain.
Common Causes of Tooth Sensitivity
Several factors can lead to the exposure of dentin and result in tooth sensitivity:
1. Worn Tooth Enamel
Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can wear down the enamel, especially around the gum line, making the teeth more sensitive.
2. Gum Recession
Gum disease or aggressive brushing can cause the gums to recede, exposing the tooth roots that are not protected by enamel, making them highly sensitive.
3. Tooth Decay and Cracks
Cavities and cracked teeth can expose the dentin or even the pulp, leading to increased sensitivity and pain.
4. Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
Frequent grinding or clenching of teeth can wear down the enamel and increase sensitivity over time.
5. Acidic Foods and Beverages
Regular consumption of citrus fruits, carbonated drinks, and acidic foods can erode enamel, making teeth more prone to sensitivity.
6. Post Dental Treatment Sensitivity
Some dental procedures, like teeth whitening, fillings, or crown placements, may cause temporary sensitivity.
Symptoms of Tooth Sensitivity
Tooth sensitivity typically presents as a sharp, sudden pain or discomfort when the teeth are exposed to certain triggers, such as:
Hot or cold foods and beverages
Sweet or acidic foods
Cold air
Brushing or flossing teeth
Using mouthwash
The pain can be localized to a single tooth or affect multiple teeth and may last for a few seconds to a minute.
Diagnosis
If you're experiencing persistent tooth sensitivity, it’s important to visit a dentist for a proper diagnosis. Your dentist will:
Review your dental history and symptoms
Perform a visual examination
Use dental instruments to check for sensitivity
Take X-rays to detect underlying issues like cavities or gum disease
An accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment.
Treatment Options for Tooth Sensitivity
Treatment for tooth sensitivity depends on the cause and severity. Here are some common treatment approaches:
1. Desensitizing Toothpaste
Special toothpastes are formulated with ingredients like potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride to block pain signals from the tooth surface to the nerve.
2. Fluoride Treatments
Professional fluoride varnishes or gels strengthen enamel and reduce the transmission of sensations from the tooth surface.
3. Dental Bonding or Sealants
In cases of exposed root surfaces, your dentist may apply a bonding agent or sealant to cover the exposed dentin.
4. Gum Grafting
For gum recession-related sensitivity, a gum graft may be performed to cover the exposed roots.
5. Root Canal Therapy
If the sensitivity is severe and related to damaged tooth pulp, a root canal may be recommended to remove the affected nerve tissue.
6. Mouthguards
For patients who grind their teeth at night, custom-fitted mouthguards can help prevent enamel wear and alleviate sensitivity.
Preventing Tooth Sensitivity
Preventing sensitivity starts with maintaining good oral hygiene and making conscious lifestyle choices. Here are some tips:
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle brushing technique
Brush twice a day and floss daily
Avoid acidic foods and beverages
Use fluoride toothpaste regularly
Wear a mouthguard if you grind your teeth
Visit your dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings
When to See a Dentist
If you experience sensitivity that lasts longer than a few days or becomes progressively worse, it's important to consult a dentist. Persistent sensitivity can indicate underlying issues that may worsen if left untreated.
Conclusion
Tooth sensitivity may seem like a minor issue, but it can significantly impact your quality of life, affecting your ability to enjoy your favorite foods and drinks. Fortunately, with proper care, prevention, and treatment, sensitive teeth can be managed effectively. Regular dental visits, good oral hygiene, and lifestyle adjustments are key to maintaining strong, healthy, and pain-free teeth.
Don’t ignore the signs—if you’re experiencing discomfort or sudden pain in your teeth, talk to your dentist today and take the first step toward a healthier smile.
How Long Do Dental Crowns Last and How to Maintain Them?
Tumblr media
The dental crown is a necessary device used to restore a tooth that has been weakened or damaged. The dental caps work to improve both the cosmetic looks and functional capabilities of a tooth that must be protected. Dental crowns remain durable but must eventually be replaced depending on various conditions.
Crowns are made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys, each with certain advantages regarding strength and appearance. Most dental crowns in downtown Calgary usually provide a functional life of between 10 and 15 years. That period, however, may differ depending on oral hygiene habits and personal habits.
Primary Factors That Influence Crown Longevity
The duration of dental crown effectiveness depends on multiple factors. Oral hygiene is a key factor. The area around the crown will develop decay when patients fail to brush correctly or when they skip flossing their teeth. The combination of eating hard foods with teeth grinding during sleep and using teeth as tools leads to premature crown failure.
Environmental wear and repeated use when chewing cause gradual degradation of structure. Crowns that are placed on posterior teeth may be subject to more stress and, thus, may be worn down faster than crowns placed on anterior teeth.
Best Practices to Extend the Life of Dental Crowns
Following certain oral care routines can also protect a crown from damage. Patients are advised to:
Brush teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day
Floss between the crown and the gum to dislodge food particles
Avoid biting hard objects such as ice or pencils
Use a mouthguard if grinding while sleeping is a problem
Visit the dentist every six months.
By incorporating these preventive steps, patients can drastically lower the possibility of premature crown wear.
Signs That Indicate a Crown Needs Replacement
Crowns may become worn or misaligned over time. Visible cracks, pain while biting, or increased sensitivity may signal that a replacement is necessary. Ignoring these symptoms may lead to complications affecting the underlying tooth.
Prompt attention from a professional who provides dental crowns near you ensures that such concerns are identified and managed efficiently.
Maintaining Healthy Gums Around a Crown
The condition of surrounding gums plays an essential role in crown performance. Inflammation or gum recession may compromise the seal between the crown and natural tooth. Maintaining gum health helps avoid gaps where bacteria could settle.
A proper oral hygiene routine, including brushing along the gum line and regular dental cleanings, supports both gum health and crown stability.
Importance of Professional Dental Assessments
Routine dental examinations are necessary for identifying minor crown issues before they worsen. During these visits, dentists can detect subtle signs of wear, monitor crown position, and recommend action as needed.
Partnering with a reliable dental clinic in downtown Calgary ensures that dental restorations are reviewed consistently and professionally maintained.
Mistakes That May Lead to Early Crown Failure
Certain habits increase the likelihood of premature crown damage:
Using teeth to tear packaging
Failing to clean around the crown edges
Ignoring signs of discomfort
Chewing on non-food objects
Avoiding such practices contributes to the long-term success of the dental crown and overall oral wellness.
Emergency Situations Involving Crowns
In cases where a crown falls off or breaks, immediate action is recommended. The crown should be kept in a safe place and brought to the dental appointment. Re-cementing may be possible in some cases, while others may require a full replacement.
Delays in treatment could expose the tooth to decay or injury, increasing the complexity of necessary care.
How to Prepare for a Dental Emergency: Tips From Emergency Dentists
Tumblr media
Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them—during a family dinner, on vacation, or even in the middle of the night. Whether it's a sudden toothache, a knocked-out tooth, or a broken crown, knowing what to do in those critical first moments can make a significant difference in the outcome. At Olive Branch Dental Care, our emergency dentists are here to help you stay prepared, calm, and confident if a dental crisis strikes.
Being proactive about dental emergency preparedness can minimize pain, prevent complications, and even save your smile. Here’s everything you need to know to handle a dental emergency effectively.
What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?
First, it’s important to understand what qualifies as a dental emergency. Common dental emergencies include:
Severe toothache or swelling
Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
Cracked, chipped, or broken tooth
Lost filling or crown
Abscess or infection
Injury to the gums, lips, or jaw
Uncontrolled bleeding after dental work
If you're unsure whether your situation is an emergency, a good rule of thumb is: If it hurts, it’s an emergency—especially if it involves bleeding, trauma, or potential infection.
How to Be Prepared: Emergency Dental Tips from the Experts
While you can’t predict when a dental emergency will occur, you can take steps to prepare. Here’s what our Olive Branch Dental Care team recommends:
1. Have an Emergency Dental Kit Ready
Keep a small kit in your home, car, or travel bag with the following essentials:
Sterile gauze
Dental wax (for braces or sharp edges)
Over-the-counter pain relievers (non-aspirin)
A small container with a lid (for storing a knocked-out tooth)
Saline solution or clean water
A cold compress
Our emergency contact number: [(604) 918-5420]
Having these items handy can reduce panic and help stabilize the situation until you get professional care.
2. Know What to Do in Common Scenarios
Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any debris. Take a pain reliever if needed, but avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums, as it can burn the tissue. Call us right away.
Knocked-Out Tooth: Time is critical! Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse gently if dirty, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that’s not possible, place it in milk or saline and get to our office within 30–60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Chipped or Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth and save any pieces of the tooth. Apply gauze to stop bleeding and a cold compress to reduce swelling. Contact our office promptly.
Lost Crown or Filling: If a crown falls off, clean it and try to place it back over the tooth using dental cement or toothpaste as a temporary adhesive. If that’s not possible, bring it with you to your appointment.
Dental Abscess: Swelling, pus, and throbbing pain may indicate a serious infection. Do not ignore it—abscesses can spread and lead to life-threatening complications. Rinse with saltwater and seek emergency care immediately.
3. Stay Calm and Act Quickly
Dental emergencies can be stressful, but staying calm and acting quickly is essential. Panic delays action, which can reduce the chances of saving a tooth or stopping an infection. Breathe deeply, consult your emergency dental kit, and call our office right away.
4. Have an Emergency Dentist on Speed Dial
One of the best ways to prepare is to know exactly where to go for emergency dental care. At Olive Branch Dental Care, we offer same-day appointments for urgent cases and flexible scheduling to accommodate unexpected dental needs. Keep our number saved in your phone and post it in a visible location at home.
Preventing Dental Emergencies
While not all dental emergencies can be avoided, many can be prevented with good habits and regular dental care:
Visit us every 6 months for checkups and cleanings
Wear a mouthguard during sports or high-risk activities
Avoid chewing hard objects like ice, popcorn kernels, or pens
Don’t use your teeth to open bottles or packages
Address dental issues early—don’t wait until they become painful
Taking these preventive steps can greatly reduce the risk of sudden dental trauma or infection.
When in Doubt, Call Us
If you’re experiencing dental pain or trauma and aren’t sure what to do, call Olive Branch Dental Care immediately. Our experienced emergency dentists will guide you on next steps and, if needed, schedule you for urgent care.
Remember: Acting fast can mean the difference between saving a tooth and losing it.
Be Prepared, Not Panicked
No one wants to deal with a dental emergency, but having a plan can make all the difference. At Olive Branch Dental Care, we’re here to help you every step of the way—before, during, and after the unexpected. With preparation, professional guidance, and compassionate care, you can face any dental emergency with confidence.Need help now?
