What's in a Name?

I used to say your name with the excitement of children, so early on Christmas morning It fell from my lungs with confetti attached, A celebration for five letters arranged in such a beautiful way, your name I'd talk about you as if you were truly perfect And there was a reason for that

In my eyes, you were

It found it's way into my everyday conversation I'd say your name as if it was some sort of right to brag even to the people with whom you never met You were my go-to topic the well in which I dipped my pen The language I learned to speak I was fluent in your name

And I can barely speak my native tongue real good

Now, your name stays buried unless I feel I need to be sad It hurts to hear it and be reminded of the potential we had They all say it, love, but we really could have had it all But it was dropped when everything we had was brought to a halt It's a ghost that haunts every corner of my puzzle piece mind My hearts there, I just put it someplace that I can't find

I once said your name with love dripping from it letters and I relished in how it made my mouth move How there almost the faint taste of how you smell Sometimes I catch that scent In the wind In the grocery store in the car

I am instantly taking back to memory And I smile as I speak your name

there is a judge in Seattle who does the weekly name change hearings, and who says it's her favorite part of the week. she says she doesn't read out previous names, or ask about the reasons why people want to change them. she says it's a beautiful moment, and a celebration; a claiming of a new identity, or a reclamation of an old identity. she encourages the room to clap for folks. then she welcomes everyone up, one by one, by last name and with warmth; she shows them the court order where nobody else can see, asks them to double check the spelling, and then they're done! do they want a picture? do they want their friends and loved ones who came with them to be in it too? do they want the court order in the photo? she helps everyone pose, shakes hands and stands with them for as long as they need to take it, recruits the clerk for help taking photos of the folks who came alone. then she tells them where to go next, congratulates them, and claps along with the rest of the room.

probably three quarters of the people there were trans, and she centered their experience quietly, with love and joy.

I think I'll be thinking about her a lot this January, and for a long time after. it's good to know she's there.

fascinating thing about sinners is how absolutely doomed the narrative is.

like okay if sammie hadn't gone to the juke joint, remmick probably wouldn't have shown up. but then the klan would have. okay smoke took those assholes out solo, if it was him and stack maybe they could have handled it. well the juke joint would have shut down in a month because no one had any real fucking money because of the sharecropping scrip. not to mention two seperate mobs are on their way to fuck the twins up (what do you MEAN you robbed al capone??). okay maybe they covered their tracks, well they're still in the fucking jim crow south and stack and mary have a cool 35 years until loving v virginia so best case scenario is he's broke and watching the love of his life from afar until he's 70. plus annie implied the twins were on borrowed time anyway since she'd been quietly protecting them the whole time they were gone.

idk it both adds to the horror that there was no way out and just solidifies sammie saying it was the best day of his life, like that one little perfect moment was all they were going to get anyway
