The Easiest Way to Get YouTube to Auto-Sync Your Video Script

Not sure how many people this will be useful to here, but I thought I would share, since this tip has saved me a lot of headaches since I discovered it.
Auto-Syncing Subtitles on YouTube
Subtitles are things that are often overlooked on YouTube vids, and as good as AI is getting at creating auto-generated subtitles for vids, there is nothing quite like having personally uploaded, accurate ones for quality control.
However, I have found they can be a little tricky, and doing them manually by hand takes forever!
One way of doing this is paying a company to create a subtitle file from your video and just uploading this. However, for those of us on a budget, this is often a cost we simply cannot afford.
Luckily, YouTube offers great tools to help us out.
The most useful of these for me, is the Auto-Sync option.
Below I'm going to share the most useful tip I have discovered on how to get this option to work quickly and exactly how I want every time.
What you will need to use this method:
the script of your video
YouTube Studio
Method for Flawless Auto-Sync Subtitles
Preformat the script file:
Open your script file in the word processor of your choice - as long as it has a search and replace option.
Add a new paragraph at every point you definitely want a new subtitle - YouTube will auto break longer paragraphs, but it can be very random how it does it and sometimes with large scripts it fails.
This is the important step - search and replace all single paragraph marks with two paragraph marks so paragraphs have a space between them. This will make auto-syncing work like a charm because it will take each paragraph as its own subtitle and has to do way less work.
Inputting the Subtitles:
Open your uploaded video in YouTube Studio and click the subtitles option.

Choose the Auto-Sync option.

Copy and paste the double spaced script into the Auto-sync box and wait while the AI automatically syncs the subtitles to the sound in your video. It should only take a little while (this varies on what time of day it is and how busy the system is).
What to Do If the Auto-Sync Fails
Occasionally the auto-sync fails - it just hangs and never manages to create the subtitles correctly or gives the message "Auto-sync is taking longer than usual" and still never gets there. I have found there are usually one of two reasons for this:
The video has not finished the checking process. In that case I close the subtitle window using the X and choose the "discard changes" option. This means we can start the process over again once the checking of the vid is done and the processes won't interfere with each other.
It's a large script file and it just can't do it. I use the same method of leaving and discarding changes, then I check my file to make script file to make sure there's nothing in it that could be pasting in incorrectly and try again. It usually works the second time.
What to Do If There Are Existing Subtitles and Auto-Sync is Not There
If there are already subtitles on the vid but we wish to add a whole new set, either because they are incorrect or incomplete, we need to first remove the existing subtitles before we can use the Auto-Sync option.
Hence we need to open the subtitles window as usual and choose the clear subtitles option. There are three vertical dots next to the EDIT AS TEXT option at the top of the subtitles screen. Click this and a drop down will appear with the "Clear Subtitles" option. This will delete all subtitles on the vid, so as a precaution, I would download the subtitles first from the same menu. Then if you decide you want them back again for any reason you can just re-upload the file.

Once I discovered the double spacing the paragraphs trick I have not had a subtitle set fail to sync correctly, whereas before it could be a bit hit and miss. I use it for my shorts and my long form and I hope this info will be able to help someone else out if they are having problems.
If you have tips for dealing with some of YouTube's quirks, I would love to hear them in the comments.

can you tell us all the plugins / ad blockers you use
on desktop, uBlock Origin (NOT Adblock Plus! they sold out years ago! they literally take money from advertisers to make sure their ads get through their filters!) and SponsorBlock for Firefox. if you still see ads on youtube specifically check out this page. if it's green, then the problem is with your specific installation and you should check out this reddit megathread. if it's red, then tough luck, wait a few hours for uBlock's crack team of hackers to catch back up in their constant arms race with Youtube.
for Android, get ReVanced Manager from here and use that + an .apk download of the latest Youtube release (just google "youtube apk") to patch yourself together a version of the Youtube app that acts like you paid for Advanced even though you didn't, which means no ads. also, side tangent, that's where the name comes from: originally it was just "Youtube Vanced" because it was "Advanced" without the "ad"s. then the Vanced team got slapped with a C&D for being dumbasses and minting NFTs of the Vanced logo, which was literally just the Youtube logo, so ReVanced rose from the ashes to continue its legacy. oh also there are a shitload of boxes you can check off during the patching process and one of them just integrates Sponsorblock for you, so that's nice.
i should also mention here, for no reason in particular, that the Vanced Manager app lets you patch a number of other apps in the same way, removing ads and adding "premium" features without you having to pay. one of these apps may or may not be Tumblr itself.
as long as you're fucking with your Android, download xManager and use it to get ad-free Spotify without paying for it. iirc the app auto-downloads the apk for you but it's been months since i last fucked with it so i might be misremembering.
honorary mention goes to NewPipe for being a way easier to install alternative to all of the above if you don't care about logging in. it's an alternate frontend for youtube that lets you watch it ad-free right out of the box. the main drawbacks are that the UI is a little ugly (especially compared to the official/ReVanced version), you can't use Sponsorblock, and it doesn't sync with your Google account (this could be a plus for you if you're big into privacy but personally i like having my likes and watch history synced across desktop and mobile). although now that i just did some research to make sure i wasn't talking out my ass, it looks like the original dev is working on a forked version of the app named Tubular that does have Sponsorblock and is apparently trying to get google account stuff working, so that's cool. oh and it can also browse/play Soundcloud ad-free, if you still use Soundcloud in 2024

Did I just spend 6h learning how to use a new software, reloading old saves, and recording my screen just to make a 27 sec music edit about Nere? Maybe.
The internet lacks Nere content, and I need to eat.
(I had to sync the beats manually I never use auto beats I don't even know how to do it 💀)
Full screen version on youtube too :

Hi Abi!
I was watching your video on Nebula to get the non censored version, and once again, the subtitles felt like they are auto-generated, which makes it harder for me to engage. I know that the YouTube subtitles are much better (they are honestly pretty great), but it is rather frustrating that this is a trade-off that even exist.
I remember you have been asked about this before, and I know it's a problem with videos on Nebula in general (and I did send them a letter today), but is there anything you can do, so we won't have to choose between the uncensored version and accessibility?
At the moment there's nothing I can do besides bug them about it, which I do every time I upload. They tell me they're working on it but apparently it's actually quite difficult to create a system whereby creators can upload and then customise our own subtitles.
The way it works for YouTube is - I upload the video and then send an unlisted link to a subtitling service. I pay them a lot of money and they send me back a .srt file with the subtitles precisely timed to the video. I then upload that .srt file to YouTube, where I can customise it by correcting misspellings and adding the jokes and commentary over the credits.
But Nebula has no facility to add a subtitle file and then customise it. I can't send them the .srt file I get from the subtitling service because it's timed to the YouTube version and it'd be out of sync and incorrect when displayed under the Nebula version. I can't pay the subtitling service to create a second .srt file for the Nebula version because A) Nebula is paywalled so the service can't be linked to it, and B) that would double the cost of what is already a very expensive part of the process. I also can't even just write the .srt file myself and save the money because there's no facility to do that in the Nebula Uploader.
The ideal scenario is I upload the YouTube version's .srt file and then edit it myself to fit the Nebula version - basically the same way it works on YouTube - but apparently that requires a system that's currently not in place and extremely difficult to build.
I'm looking into some way I can maybe get the subtitling service to create two versions of the .srt file - one for Nebula and one for YouTube - but that'll double the cost on my end so I need to look at the budget.
I'm sorry this is frustrating; it's a pain in my ass too. It's one of those problems that looks like it should be easy to solve but turns out it's a bit of a Gordian Knot.

New Enhanced Edition - Comic-Con 2007 with Jensen, Eric, Sera, and Ben
youtube
Direct link to video. Link to YouTube channel. (22 videos available.)
My latest video is up. This is the SDCC 2007 panel with Jensen. (Jared had been scheduled to be there, but he missed his flight because he was filming until 6am that morning.)
Additional Footage Found and other Ramblings
Some of you may have seen my pleas searching for anyone who'd downloaded (and still had) all of scaperanya's videos from this panel. I never did manage to turn up the missing files, but I received something better late last week! AgtSpooky dug up a nearly-complete video of the full panel that used to be on the now-dead WinchesterBros.com web site. The video quality was a little low, but the audio was glorious! I edited in all the audio to match up with the higher-quality video I used. Until then, I'd only had good audio for about half of the panel, and the rest of it was really, really bad. In addition to being easier on the ears, it improved the accuracy of my subtitles.
I also used several minutes from that video in the sidebar to give visibility to other speakers in a small window, as well as using a few other videos for the same purpose. My full credits are in the video description. The main part of the video uses a higher-quality video as much as possible (see comparison screen shots below), and that one was focused mostly on Jensen. As it should be. 😂 So I did something similar to what I did for SDCC 2008 a while back -- I tried to give visibility to other people in smaller video windows. You can see an example of it in the thumbnail above, top-left corner. They'll be more useful on larger screens -- probably not so much for viewers on a phone.
Sera gets the least coverage in the sidebar videos, but that wasn't an intentional slight. It was just difficult to fit her in because she was on the opposite side of Jensen from Eric and Ben. She wasn't talking or reacting as much whereas Eric was more actively engaged with most of the questions, so I felt there wasn't usually any justification to cram her onto the screen and I was afraid it was already too cluttered.
What's Next?
I've started the next chronological convention, which is Jared's panel from Fangoria in January 2008. With all the footage synced up, I have about 42 minutes' worth of coverage. There are two gaps of unknown length toward the end, but I ended up with more coverage than I expected when I first started. I'll post more details about that once I announce that video's publication.
Please bear with me if I'm slower than usual to get my next video out. This SDCC video presented a few challenges. I put most of my spare time into working on it and the end result was that I fell behind on both video editing and on general life.
Before/After Comparison Photo
Please join me in a sigh of relief that Jensen's head is finally getting unsquished after 18 years. 😂
Disclaimer: the entire video won't look this good. The below source makes up 88% of the video and I had to use some lower-quality videos to fill in the gaps in their coverage. I also chose one of the better-looking frames for my comparison. Most of it does look very good for a video from 2007 though, and I think with the enhancements it will look better than any version you may have watched before.
A recap for anyone not familiar with this project…
In December 2023, I started a project to enhance old convention videos. The project is mostly focused on Jared and Jensen, but there will occasionally be videos with other actors. I'm upscaling the videos and making other visual improvements, adding extra content to clarify various references, and adding human-generated, color-coded subtitles so you can better understand the sometimes-chaotic audio. The subtitles can be auto-translated to other languages via YouTube.
My goal is to publish the best, most complete, and most watchable versions of these older convention panels yet seen, but this is only possible thanks to the fans who captured the footage in the first place and were generous enough to share it with other fans. My video descriptions on YouTube will always credit my sources.
If you have any old convention videos you'd be willing to contribute to this project, please message me! I can also be reached at [email protected]. If I can get them to upscale (I can't always), I'd happily send the upscaled files back to you for your own collection whether I use them or not.

Ok we have to talk about the parallels of bill and gideon because I've seen no one do it and there's a lot. Like, gideon is to bill what stan is to Mable and Ford is to dipper. This parallel includes bill and ford's relationship compared to gideon and Mabel's because there are parallels. I will mention how this pertains to billford. This will be long. Book of bill spoilars obvously.
A couple ground rules I have screen shots but only from the parts uploaded to YouTube because I'm sick and not dealing with Disney pluss for this. 2 we're takeing the way this show uses parallels for granted and it's worth mentioning stan, Ford and bill are the bad ending for the pines and Mable dipper and gideon are the good end hence gideon getting redeemed and Ford haveing to suffer thinking stan was functionaly dead for like a few days or something. So yes they are diffrent and there diffreces are thematically important and intentionally nothing in this franchise is an accident and where working with that primis. Lastly, in the book of Bill, I'm assuming that pages from the journal are real and unaltered along with documents. The only thing I will take as true from bill in the book are things backed by other non bill sorces or the show witch I'll cite when we get there strap in.
Luts start easy
1)

Don't mind YouTube auto captions

I'll take over gravity falls and you'll rule with me
2

The outher pine punchs leading to a blue explosion and the thought that oh they might die they didn't.
3)

I couldn't find the one of bill holding them but you know the one
Ok time to get a little harder now
4)

Oh I've hit the photo limit becuse I'm on my phone and like I said I'm sick so I'm not moving but we all remember when gideon and Mable were like "opera glasses" in sync
At the beginning of their friendship, they both show their bonding into deeper feelings for each other by saying the same thing at the same time.
5)
Giddeon also blames dipper for Mable breaking up with him and bill blames stan for getting between him and Ford, also his plans in the book of Bill.
Ok I think that's enough evidence now let me tell you why this is important, starting with their timeliness.
1) villain becomes friends with pines.
2) villain offers pines everything they want (Mable clothes and glitter Ford knowledge of the univers)
3) villain trys to manipulate
4) the split
Mable eventually learns to reject gideon when he gets between her and dipper (by trying to kill him)
Ford at first is completely gungho about bills plan (yes at this point he still wants what bill is offering and gideon dint but he also dint have his sibling to talk him down and that's the point that Ford was vunerable without Stanly to protect him like dipper protected Mable by interfering). When Ford sees bills true nature he dose cut it off like Mable ( as far as wether or not ford is actually into bill romantically using this lens you can go both ways but it kind of dosnt matter. Either he didn't like bill and didn't see that he was uping the romance the way Mable dint see what gideon was doing at first. Or he did see and either willfully played along or was genuinely into the triangle becuase agin old pines are the bad ending that made bad choices. The old men's mistakes are to be learned from kids.)
5) villain react violently
When gidion trys to take Mable by force a thing gideon says bill explained to him (Bill told him to do the love cage same as in the book same as the pyramid in the show) dipper saves her becuse twins that stay together stay alive.
Ford gets solidly mind tortured for what I assume is a couple weeks in the book of bill. ( based on one of the postit note back and forward was every night that's about 6 days and there's about 6 days of mind shanigans recorded after I might have miss counted though) Ford FINALLY calls stan who saves him... by acidently pushing him through a portal, well it works.
6) villain is PISSED and ups the anti by trying to take over gravity falls (wow that's crazy it happend twice ).
7) they resync here villain says their favorite Pines is the love of their life we'll rule together over gravity falls (wether they like it or not)
8) the twin comes to save the villains favorite pines and they punch the shit out of the villain.
9 the pines learn a lesson of twins who stick together stay alive
Now for my point
So besides I think this is some killer writing. I am going to be anoying now becuse yes Bill haveing a fat crush on Ford is cannon and yeah I think that's a big deal because Alex made my queer coded villain king actually queer and that's just deeply cool. Alex set up a standard for what toxic men pursuing a unrequited relationship is and then had Bill do that that's not a acident and the doubling down in the book of bill adding more parallels than we already had from the show witch was alot makes this cristal clear. Now agin how Ford felt we can go back and forward about, but bill no that bitch gay sorry; our god Alex decreed it and there's nothing you can do about it. Thanks for reading K thanks Bye
Special thanks to my crazy girlfriend for editing this 😅 yes it was worse

My favourites from 2024
Note: this post was made for my website, and I believe that is the best way to read this post! For the linkphobes, I did my best to replicate the quality of the formatting here, but if you want to see the original, you can follow this link to check it out. Thanks and enjoy!
As I assemble my top 20 albums and songs from this year, I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight some songs and albums that did a very specific thing well this year. Some of these superlatives will be about the songs more objective qualities, while some will be about how they fit into my broader listening this year, but all of them, I feel, deserve attention for their own unique qualities.
If you want to listen to my favourites as you read along, I've made a companion playlist on Apple Music (with auto-synced versions available on Spotify and YouTube). Linked here!
Most underrated album of the year
Criteria: This is the album I feel has gone most unfairly under the radar. It might be an album that isn't talked about enough, or one that is talked about, but not as highly as I believe it should be. Or maybe even a combination of both.
Los Campesinos! - All Hell

Kind of like: Gang of Youths, Death Cab for Cutie Songs to try: The Coin-Op Guillotine, A Psychic Wound, To Hell in a Handjob
If your thing is indie rock with great emo lyricism and a buried but noticeable punk streak, this album should absolutely be on your radar. This album is witty, depressing, masochistic, sadistic, frustrated, and so much more, all while still being an exciting and mostly coherent listen. It's one of those albums that has that perfect balance between the in-depth, something-new-every-listen approach and the immediate, fun, catchy approach which makes it great to listen to regardless of the level of focus you can afford it (although, as ever, I recommend a focused first listen).
Concept Album of the Year
Criteria: The album which I feel has the most interesting concept and/or execution of that concept which is explored over the course of it's runtime.
Honourable Mention: Lupe Fiasco - Samurai

Just an honourable mention here first. I didn't really connect with this album as much as I would have thought, and I think the execution of the concept seems a little lacking, at least on first few listens, but I couldn't talk about concepts of the year without discussing the album which dives into Amy Winehouse's hypothetical rap career. It's such an interesting concept, and I hope it is more embedded in the music than I can see after my first couple listens, because it's exactly the type of concept I'd love to get on board with.
Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk

Kind of like: Japanese Breakfast, a moodier Dua Lipa, Carly Rae Jepsen Songs to try: Killing Time, Image, Love Is Everywhere
There's so much to love about this album, and you'll definitely find out more about that if you catch my top 20 albums list that'll be coming out sometime in the new year. Sticking to the album's concept though, the concept is somewhat open to interpretation I think, but I'm fairly confident in my personal reading of it, which is that it's an album about cultural assimilation of some kind. Broadly, it is undoubtedly about a transformation, but how sinister (or not) that transformation is is largely left up to the listener.
On first listen, I considered it a positive transformation, probably due to the album closing on the happy love song The Ballad of Matt & Mica, but on repeat listens I picked up on some less happy undertones. Or more accurately, undertones that were too happy. It gave me Stepford Wives vibes, and my current interpretation as of writing this is that the album is from the perspective of someone who undergoes a transformation from a regular human with flaws and expectations into an eerie, overly-smooth version of themselves, a Stepford Wife that fits in perfectly at the expense of individuality, in order to attain the "dream" of a spouse, a house, and kids to run around it.
With both interpretations, though, one thing (other than the broader theme of transformation) remains the same: excellence in execution. It's almost reminiscent of how David Bowie's "Heroes" similarly has various valid interpretations that all feel powerful (a phenomenon I wrote about here, if you feel like checking it out).
Boundary Breaker
Criteria: This one doesn't have to necessarily be a groundbreaking release, it just needs to force me out of my comfort zone. This is the album that introduced me to a genre or style of music that I previously considered in some way out of bounds.
Charli xcx - BRAT

Songs to try: 360, Von dutch, Talk talk
I have so much to say about this one. It's an incredible album with so much interesting stuff going on, and as I mentioned with the Magdalena Bay album, there'll be plenty more on my top 20 albums list coming soon, but for the purposes of this list, I'll keep it about what this album did that was new to me.
This wasn't quite my first electronic album -- for starters it's a broad enough term that you could argue anything with a synth falls under it -- but full on EDM was something I never thought I'd be able to enjoy, even when my concern of there generally not being any lyrics is addressed. So for that reason, when I saw Charli xcx starting to blow up in the build up to this album I just rolled my eyes dismissively and moved on. Then I kept hearing about it and got curious what all the fuss was about, so I watched the Von dutch video and... I still didn't get it. I thought the video was really cool, but the song itself did nothing for me. Then, a month or so later, I had the song on repeat and ended up listening to it over 20 times in a matter of days (which is a lot for me, I tend to like a bit more variety) and listening to every post-transformation Charli xcx album before this album released.
And that's the strange thing about this for me: it was Von dutch that did it for me. It wasn't something stripped back enough to be accessible like 360, and it wasn't something somewhat similar to the likes of The 1975's sound like Talk talk, for example. It wasn't even one of the ballads. It was the most abrasive and unapologetically electronic cut of the album outside of the closer 365 or maybe B2b (both of which are probably top 5 on the album for me too). Maybe we should chalk that up to Charli xcx being an extremely talented woman, or maybe it has something to do with the fact that some of her less noticeable influences align with my own. Either way, I couldn't be happier that I gave this album a shot. It really impressed me.
Although, I am now left with an itch for EDM-adjacent music that can match this album which also has some focus on lyrics and it turns out that just isn't that common from what I can tell, so I guess it's a mixed blessing.
Bop of the Year
Criteria: My favourite song for getting me up and moving. It's on the lighter, more upbeat side.
Honourable Mention: Kendrick Lamar - tv off

There weren't many bops this year that really blew me away, if I'm being totally honest. Espresso was a solid contender, but it was weaker than I would like for it to be my choice here. Thankfully though, Kendrick is here to supply (spoilers) two -- and arguably more -- absolutely generational bops. This is my slightly less beloved bop, but even this is chock-full of incredibly catchy bars, and that beat is just so fucking sweet, and the switch? Every single detail is exactly as it needs to be to succeed as a bop. Its never been so challenging to not move.
Kendrick Lamar - Not Like Us

The only person that can top Kendrick Lamar: K. Dot. Basically everything that I said about tv off can be said about Not Like Us, but the latter is also funnier, and feels more righteous, as it tears the biggest rapper alive (at the time, he's no longer alive) to shreds, calling him out for pedophilia (or at least close proximity to it), cultural appropriation, and exploitation of contemporaries.
It was the moment we knew, for sure, that the beef was done. Drake got cooked and Kendrick ate every crumb. It wasn't even close in the end. Everything just came together so perfectly on Kendrick's side as if he had been planning it all for years (which I wouldn't be too shocked by considering the impetus for the beef was seemingly a compliment? Just one that maybe implied that the "big three" were all on the same level?). And this song is the perfect cherry on top of his master-plan.
Euphoria told us Kendrick was here for the beef beyond the verse on Like That, 6:16 in LA told Drake he was here for the beef, Meet the Grahams told us why he was here for the beef, and Not Like Us made all those reasons accessible, fun, and, to the most success, funny. Without any of those previous steps, this might not have hit so hard, but after the severity of the claims was laid out so clearly in previous songs this one became both powerful and infectious.
Jam of the Year
Criteria: My favourite vibey, laid back song. Just a groovy, chill listen.
Honourable Mention: Charli xcx - So i

Okay, maybe this doesn't quite fit the description of a jam that I laid out above, but I think it's fair to say the song is a jam (unless you're one of those disgusting individuals who believe "ballad" is a distinct category. Those people make me sick). It's a pretty minimalist beat that props up a beautiful tribute to a friend and mentor who passed away. Frankly, this deserves some love from me purely on the basis that it gets me teary-eyed. Every time I dare to give this song my full attention the line about turning down an invite to stay for dinner punches me in the gut. It's such a mundane expression of regret, but that's exactly what makes it hit so hard, I think. The fact that everyone has been the person concerned they're overstaying their welcome, or not wanting to spend time with their loved ones for whatever reason and missed the chance to get even closer to them makes the lines critical of your actions in the same way they're critical of Charli's. It's a very powerful moment in a powerful song, and the whole minimalist sound of the track makes sure you feel it.
Kendrick Lamar - reincarnated

This is the perfect example of a hip-hop jam. A simple drum beat, a chill bassline to keep things moving, and restrained melodic hooks. It creates a beautiful backdrop to Kendrick's thoughtful commentary on how fame has influenced his predecessors towards evil and an undesirable death, to then turn that on him, as he reflects on the ways he is influenced by those same forces.
Banger of the Year
Criteria: My favourite song for giving me neck pain or hearing loss. The real blood-pumpers.
Honourable Mention: JPEGMAFIA - don't rely on other men

This is JPEGMAFIA at his abrasive best. The distortion on this track is downright ridiculous, but as ever Peggy knows how to get the balance perfect to make it sweet without going overboard and making it sickly. The Succession sample that runs through the song is bonkers, the lyrics (which aren't typically the focus with JPEGMAFIA's music due to the excellence of his production) are in-your-face and surprisingly catchy to me.
I think it probably helps that the song leans less into the rocky sound that the rest of the album has (as much as I love that sound), because Peggy has always excelled when it came to bangers. His tried and true maximalist sound is the perfect formula for hearing loss in hip-hop and I don't think an album of his would feel complete without at least one of these.
Charli xcx - Von dutch

I talked a bit about this in the Boundary Breaker section, so I'll keep this brief, but the special thing about this track is the production for me. It isn't a maximalist piece like the honourable mention at all, there are very few elements in this song, but the way the bass and vocals are distorted, and the presence that unsettling metallic shrieking sound that kicks in at the chorus has makes the mix seem so full but keeps things extremely memorable to the point where (if I was talented enough to create those sounds in the first place) I could probably recreate the song by memory and get it pretty accurate. For what it's worth, I believe 360 is very similar in that regard. If it wasn't clear that Charli and co. are masters of their craft before, I think the likes of this track settled it.
Favourite Finds of 2024
Criteria: My favourite album and song that I discovered this year that isn't a new release. It might be a massive release I only got around to listening to critically this year, or maybe it's a niche release that few people know about. So long as it wasn't initially released this year, but I only gave it a real listen this year, it counts.
Song pick
Madonna - Papa Don't Preach

If I hadn't gotten around to a proper listen of Madonna's music so late in the year, I probably would have made a think-piece on her legacy by now, because I was very shocked to find out just how huge and influential she was in her prime considering how little she seems to get mentioned now. Of course I knew she was an icon, and I knew there were a few songs I had heard in passing, and even a few that I quite liked to the limited extent I can when I'm not really paying attention to it, but I got the overwhelming feeling that we aren't giving Madonna her flowers nowadays.
This song in particular is probably pushing up against the boundaries of this superlative though, because this was always the Madonna song that stuck with me whenever I heard it on the radio, and I was already pretty familiar with it before my first critical listen (which did still come this year). I already knew I loved it, I just had to pay enough attention to pick out the details about why, and now I can point to the groovy, energetic bassline; the solid lyrics that incidentally highlight how new the abortion moral panic truly is; and Madonna's dynamic vocal performance that runs the gamut, switching seamlessly but impressively between a glitzy pop voice to an impassioned and strained pleading to a growl, giving the song a beautiful rising intensity. It's fun, it's catchy, it's got an interesting premise and some added depth if you're paying attention... Pop just doesn't get much better than this.

MF DOOM - MM.. FOOD

Kind of like: Lupe Fiasco, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn Songs to try: Vomitspit, Rapp Snitch Knishes, Kookies
Does a hip-hop album with a classic sound that revolves around food metaphors and double entendres appeal to you? If it does, go nuts, this album is perfect for you. If it sounds a bit cheesy for your tastes, that's fair, I felt the same way at first. But regardless of how skeptical you may be of the album's theme, you'll be asking for seconds before you're done with the entrée. And those seconds will turn to minutes which will turn to hours as you dive deeper, picking up a new stroke of genius every time you give this album a listen.
I'm not exactly sure how many times I've listened to this album now, but I've been going back to it often throughout the year after my first listen early in the year and I still don't feel like I've scratched the surface. I've still only listened to a handful of DOOM's albums for this reason, they're all just so dense that every album, especially this one, is a gift that keeps on giving. Whenever I think about listening to a new album of his, I end up deciding to listen to the albums I already know because I know there's still some novelty buried away in there and I already know I love it. It's either the best curse or worst blessing I could ask for, but either way I'm thankful to my past self for giving me a chance to fall in love with it.
So there are my picks! As mentioned earlier, a top 20 albums will be coming in the new year if you still want to hear more about my favourites of the year, and I'll also try to get a top 20 songs list done before January is over too. And if you want an easy way to listen to the stuff I mentioned here, here's the link again to the companion playlist on Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube, as well as at the top of the page (note: there may be some sync errors on the latter two services). Enjoy!

How do you do your mouths? they always seem to be very tricky for me, especially moving the teeth with the jaw for viseme blendshapes
Ooh! So, I have 2 separate workflows I do for mouths but they're both kinda the same workflow. Something that may help more than anything I'd write is my second youtube channel where I have some timelapses uploaded
Visemes first though before I get into modeling
for lip sync, the first thing I do is make an AA / Jaw open shape key. I set up an empty where I want the jaw rotation to be, and i set my 3D cursor there + set my transform pivot point to 3D cursor. (Knowing where to put the jaw rotation spot is kinda tricky and takes some fiddling around) Once I get the mouth where I'd like it to be, I rotate the teeth and other mouth parts as well on their own AA shape keys
After that I use AA to make the OH viseme, and I make the EE viseme. Then, I combine those three and do extra adjustments to create OO, FF, TH, CH, and PP/MM. You can do all lip sync from just those. For VRChat, I generate visemes in the CATS blender addon and then I delete any of the visemes it generated for ones I've already made (OO,FF,TH,CH,PP) and replace them with mine, because they look better than the auto generated
More info on modeling below!
I usually leave a bit of a gap between the lips. If the outlines don't fill that gap entirely, I make a mesh that fills in that spot
So for the actual modeling I have 2 methods:
The first and primary way I do things is I trace out the mouth outline from my refs with verts, and adjust it to match the front and side view
and i just start extruding and filling in until I get a head mesh
(btw this is @pumpoen's fursona/ref art)
the second way i do things is i make a super rough sculpt, and I retopologize it! But I also combine the retopologized mesh with my first method for the eye area, because I've found that I can't really get a sculpt perfectly accurate to a 2D ref
Hope this was helpful! Sorry If I didn't go into enough detail :o

adhd budgeting talk: the budgeting service i *don't* use
i keep seeing youtubers get sponsorships from rocketmoney and normally i tune them out, because a) i don't care, and b.) i am happy to recommend people sign up for YNAB, i use YNAB, and will continue to use it. [i am NOT sponsored. they give me no money. i DO have a referral link, but any person who uses ynab does. we both get a free month of the service if you start a trial period via my link, and then choose to purchase the service after the end of your free trial. they don't auto-charge. that's it.]
BUT. but. one youtuber, as part of her advert, started mentioning that rocketmoney has bill negotiation services and she was talking about how nice it was to have someone like, be the adult on her behalf to negotiate down bills save her money etc, how she didn't have to deal with the stress and anxiety and they do it all FOR you. they call all the companies FOR you!!! how "nice"!
unfortunately this was THE OPPOSITE of reassuring to me. in fact, this screams: RED ALERT RED FLAG PROCEED WITH CAUTION!!!
let me explain why i don't trust rocketmoney since i found this out.
the VERY tl;dr is this: you're giving away all your security info and login info, giving them the right to pretend to be you to negotiate on your bills, and also they "may" charge you for this service per bill. if you want assistance with this kind of thing, please find a non-profit licensed credit counseling agency via the NFCC because as non-profits their goal is not making money off of you, it's literally to improve the community, increase financial education, and genuinely help you.
okay the full "holy shit please be more suspicious of companies whose goal is to make money," spiel":
most budgeting apps/services that are free have to make money somehow, so you need to consider how they do that. (probably selling your data, or being your literal bank, etc). they are typically for-profit companies. never forget the goal is them making money.
that's not inherently a bad thing per se, but it means they have a known motive.
if you have a budgeting app set to auto-sync with your bank info, you are granting them a limited power of attorney to view, access, and transmit your bank data. every single budget company that offers this, mentions that in their terms of service agreement.
my recommended budget service, You Need a Budget, states this in their TOS. in YNAB, it only applies if you choose to sync your bank accounts with your budget, bc you have to give them the info, obviously. You can enter everything all manually if you want to, and then they can't access anything. Personally I am comfortable with authorizing this very limited POA, so I do it, because yeah, it makes my life easier, and i need this automated to make it sustainable to do bc adhd. even on my best days, i would never keep up with all of that.
so, that said: YOU ARE GRANTING A FOR PROFIT COMPANY WAYYYY MORE POWER THAN JUST PULLING AND TRANSMITTING YOUR TRANSACTIONS DATA IF THEY'RE NEGOTIATING BILLS ON YOUR BEHALF!!!!
LIKE. bruh. y'all. everyone.
unfortunate truths:
sometimes you gotta at least skim the headings of the terms of service agreement
sometimes you GOTTA just buckle down and do the annoying anxiety inducing awful adult thing yourself and, barring that --
find a NON-PROFIT TO HELP YOU, NOT A FOR PROFIT COMPANY if you really want this kind of service.
rocket money's terms of service for bill negotiation is waaayyy more than just "sync and share my transaction data."
they may CALL UP ANOTHER COMPANY AND PRETEND TO BE YOU.
By requesting a Bill Negotiation, you authorize Rocket Money to contact your Provider as your limited agent in order to secure a better rate on the service on your behalf. Rocket Money will provide account verification details including, but not limited to, your full name, respective addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses, the name of the Provider, your Provider account number, the applicable password, PIN number, or other security credentials to access the account or validate the account with the service provider in order to proceed with the negotiation. If it’s necessary for our agents to represent to your Provider that they’re the account holder, you consent to such representation solely in order to perform the Bill Negotiation.
hello???? they get all your security info and pin and credentials and you give them permission to pretend to be you. their goal, i must STRESS, is to MAKE A PROFIT OFF OF YOU by doing this.
...i know people's eyes glaze over this kinda shit but like. god. the TOS!!!! the FEES!!!!
We may charge a Bill Negotiation fee (the "Negotiation Fee") for our Services connected with Bill Negotiation.
you MAY charge a fee for this??? i hate legalese. this is probably just "we WILL charge a fee most of the time."
The current Negotiation Fee is decided by the user, anywhere between 30-60% of the 12-month savings achieved as a result of the negotiation.
wait, what. it's decided by us, the CUSTOMER, and we can pick a range? who the fuck would choose a 60% fee? this doesn't make sense. why are there options. why the fuck would i pay 60% OF THE SAVINGS TO MAKE SOMEONE DO ONE PAINFUL PHONE CALL FOR ME?
For instance, if a 40% fee is chosen and Rocket Money is able to lower a bill by $10 per month, that would equal savings of $120 over 12 months and a Negotiation Fee of $48.
.....okay so. again they lower the bill by $10.00 monthly, right? let's say the bill was originally $50, now it's $40, but you DO pay it monthly, not in a lump annual discount. doesn't matter what this bill is for. they're taking 40% of your savings that they broker for you. meaning instead of saving $10, you're only saving $6.00.
you're not ACTUALLY saving $120.00 over the course of a year. you're paying them $48.00 all at once in order to not have to spend $72.00 over the course of TWELVE MONTHS. because you don't want to make an annoying phone call that might take you hours.
i mean look, if you feel that's worth nearly $50 (hypothetically) for a SINGLE BILL, idk what to tell you. that just doesn't seem like a very budgeting savvy trick tbh.
We may charge the Negotiation Fee to the credit or debit card provided and authorized at the time the Bill Negotiation is submitted. The Negotiation Fee is non-refundable, except in the event that an error was made during the Bill Negotiation, or except as otherwise required by applicable law.
oh also if they sign you up for some special promo deal that expires and then gives you a higher bill or extra fees later, you're on the hook for that. lmfao.
ALSO THEY HAVE A SAVINGS PLAN THING THEY OFFER AND I JUST SEE THIS, BOLDING THEIRS:
Rocket Money’s Savings Plan feature is not an interest-yielding savings account so you will not earn any interest on your funds.
get the fuck outta here lmfao.
YOU LITERALLY DON'T EARN ANY INTEREST IN YOUR SAVINGS ACCOUNT. THIS IS THE WORST KIND OF SAVINGS ACCOUNT THERE CAN BE.
this is LESS INTEREST EARNED THAN MY CHECKING ACCOUNTS, BECAUSE IT'S ZERO.
I have a decent-ish savings account right now. i've earned almost a full THIRTY DOLLARS so far, THIS YEAR. in THREE MONTHS. FROM INTEREST.
i cannot stress this enough, rocket money is selling you a savings...program or something to help you...save money.
it's a premium only feature.
We offer the Premium membership on a sliding scale of $4 -$5 per month (billed annually at $48 and $60) or $6-$12 per month, billed monthly.
it was so hard to find this btw. (that's $72.00 - $144.00 annual in the monthly billing example.)
again i stress it is a premium feature for you to pay at least $48.00 a year in order to "automate your savings" where it will earn you ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST.
i've earned exactly $29.90 in interest from my completely free to open regular degular savings account since january 1st. it is march 16th. if we just estimate i could get about $30 in interest every 3 months, then i could earn $120.00 just from saving money all on my own. (incidentally, that would cover the $99 annual YNAB subscription fee and leave change left over. gee. how nice. real talk: it's cheaper than amazon prime. but anyways.)
why the fuck would i pay someone $48.00 to put my savings somewhere for me and have it do nothing. what. how does that improve my finances. i hate this.
.....goddamnit they're a MORTGAGE COMPANY. rocket mortgage. is....rocket money. lmaooo explains everything.
okay don't sign up for them bye.

I wrote out this list of instructions/recommendations for making Firefox your default browser, and setting up some extensions I recommend. This is all my personal preference - I’m no expert, but I made these instructions for some friends and family, so I figured I’d share here, too! All the extensions are linked for convenience.
1. Download Firefox, pin to dock of computer, set as default browser
Why Firefox? Mozilla is a non-profit organization, so unlike Google, they aren’t looking to continually turn a profit, and is an open-source project, meaning you can check the code at any time. Firefox and Safari are independent browsers, but others like Chrome, Brave, and Microsoft Edge all run on Chromium - meaning they’re essentially all Google. The downside to using them is that if your entire internet access is connected to Google, then Google is going to collect data on everything (and then turn around and sell it all over the place).
2. Add DuckDuckGo, set as default search engine for Firefox
Why DuckDuckGo? Unlike Google, DuckDuckGo doesn't collect data from users, and allows IP addresses to remain hidden/protected. Doesn’t use cookies to track activity. Doesn’t share IP address, search terms, etc. with sites you visit (Google, Yahoo, and Bing all share this data). I find that the search results are more “clean” and I usually find what I’m looking for faster, and with fewer “listicles”/bullshit SEO-filled nonsense.
Downsides: Some complex searches may not work (niche content can be missed, but pretty much everything else is good) - so if searching for academic sources, I recommend using Google Scholar instead. Also uses Apple Maps instead of Google, which I don’t like as much, but isn’t a huge problem on the desktop. I have some privacy-centric extensions listed below, which help protect me when I do need to turn to Google.
3. Import browser data from old browser.
4. Set homepage/new tab defaults → Settings.
5. Download Firefox on phone, follow instructions to sync to computer desktop.
6. Install extensions! Improve internet browsing experience! Check out my list of recommendations below.
7. When installing extensions, take a look at the “themes” and customize the look of your browser.
Ad Blockers
Adblocker Ultimate (blocks ads)
uBlock Origin (also blocks ads)
AdGuard Adblocker (guess what this is.)
AdBlock for Firefox (I just really hate ads and want to cover my bases)
Privacy extensions
Privacy Possum (interferes with data collection by sites, helps prevent tracking)
Don’t track me Google (speeds up search results, removes Google tracking feature)
I still don’t care about cookies (allows cookies for sites/prevents pop ups - use with cookie auto delete for privacy)
Cookie autodelete (automatically deletes cookie info from sites, pairs well with above)
Youtube extensions
Return Youtube Dislike (shows the number of dislikes on Youtube - Youtube removed this feature in 2021 for no good reason)
DeRound Youtube (personal preference - makes Youtube thumbnails “sharp”. I think it looks nicer like this.)
Youtube NonStop (prevents “are you still watching” prompts)
SponsorBlock (removes embedded sponsor promotions within Youtube videos)
Other helpful stuff
Unpaywall (checks database of 16 million legal, open-access articles when you view a paywalled scholarly article to see if there’s an open version available)
Don’t Accept image/webp (lets Firefox tell sites webp formats don’t work - enables easier access to downloadable jpeg/png formats on search results)
Absolute Enable Right Click and Copy (some sites block the right click copy/paste option, this extension restores that ability - this seemed to interfere with my use of Google Docs so I disabled it for the site, but it may be coincidental. Need to investigate - this extension is newer to me.)
Facebook Container (prevents Facebook/Meta from tracking all your web activity)
LeechBlock NG (can be enabled to prevent you from using certain sites in a certain timeframe - good for productivity)
Recommended extensions for Tumblr users
Shinigami Eyes (works on other sites too, but highlights trans-friendly people/orgs/etcs green, highlights anti-trans in red. Very useful for Tumblr - makes identifying and blocking hateful users easier)
XKit Rewritten (Tumblr XKit! OG XKit doesn’t work anymore, but I’ve had success with this one. Helps customize the site, sometimes can be used to get rid of/override stupid UI updates)
My personal XKit recommendations:
Toggle on:
Anti-Capitalism (hides ads)
Mutual Checker (notes who your mutuals are, useful if you follow a lot of people/have a lot of followers and want to know who your “friends” are - especially helpful if you have friends who often change icons/urls)
No Recommended (gets rid of recommended stuff - I clicked “hide” for all the options - I only want to see things posted/reblogged by the people I follow, or things I search for specifically. Clears up the homepage, too.)
Quick Reblog (I personally love this feature - I have it set up “above the reblog button” and checked “yes” for showing the blog selector (useful if you have multiple blogs on the same account), and the “show tags” field. With Quick Reblog, when you hover over the “reblog” button, it pops up a little box that lets me quickly select what blog (defaults to main), add tags, then reblog, queue, or save the post as a draft. I don’t usually add a comment, and never using Quick Reblog, so I didn’t enable that field. You can add more settings, but this is how I like to use it!)
Tweaks (I clicked “Restore links to individual posts in the post header”, “Remove the coloured shadow from focused posts”, “Hide the ‘blaze’ and ‘tip’ button labels”, “Hide my follower count where possible”, “Hide the ‘’Now, where were we?’ button”, and “Hide the Tumblr Live carousel” (I also “snooze” Tumblr Live weekly, but still). Again, these are all personal preferences! This is just how I like the site set up).

I Accidentally Learned to Leverage ADHD by Keeping a Grimoire
Looking for a TL;DR? Scroll on down, it's at the bottom.

Okay, yes, I play Dungeons and Dragons and I'm in my thirties.
Now that that's out of the way, in early 2024 I was working on creating a new character for an upcoming game. The previous campaign had been set in space, with the vibe falling somewhere between cyberpunk and steampunk, and— while it was objectively really cool to play a hot space elf who could transform into a body of stars— I was honestly looking forward to diving back into a more typical fantasy-based setting in the next one.
Strangely, the inspiration for this character came from my favorite focus tool, Stimagz, small stick-shaped magnets used to create soothing repetitive patterns. My favorites at the time were a set that glowed in the dark, but under normal light were a slightly translucent white, somewhat reminiscent of bone. Macabre, I know, but hear me out: I was going to be using them during the game anyway, and I thought it might be fun to make up a simple fortune-telling bone-casting mechanic for a witch character.
I'm sure you'll be just as shocked as I was to learn that there isn't a built-in character template for creating a witch in D&D, so I started researching how other players had "home-brewed" their own.
I usually love the research and creative process phase of putting a character together, and this was no exception. I found myself watching YouTube videos on "witch-builds" and reading seemingly-ancient articles on charm-casting (bone-casting's less-serious cousin uses any collection of tiny objects, not just bones), and somewhere along the way I stumbled across the greatest concept I'd seen in a long time: the grimoire.
In the broadest sense, a grimoire is a comprehensive and often historical book of magic. An instructive collection of spells, rituals, techniques, and practices curated and passed down from one practitioner or coven to the next.
This concept clicked into my life like a puzzle piece, filling a gap I hadn't seen, but felt.
You see, I had received a positive diagnosis for ADHD between Thanksgiving and Christmas the previous year (which itself had been an unspeakably validating puzzle piece) and, in the early stages of treatment, I was already recognizing a constellation of patterns that had played out over my entire life.
Diagnosis gave me the language I needed to educate myself about the way my brain worked. So, armed with the correct terminology, I soon learned that— while certainly unique— I was not alone. I found belonging in the ADHD community with surprising immediacy, where no one made me feel eccentric for having several apps for everything , including to keep from getting so focused on a task that I'd forget to eat (or pee) until I was in dire straights. In fact, I was met with open arms and a cheery refrain of "one of us, one of us..."
Something I've heard frequently since, and do believe strongly, is "If you know one person with ADHD, you know one person with ADHD", we're as different from one another as we are from the Normies. That said, we're often trying to solve similar struggles, even though effective solutions usually look different from person to person.
Treatment, education, and reflection have helped me zoom out far enough to gain the perspective necessary to observe that this leads to a community of people who are individually searching for a single Capital-S Solution. A one-size-fits-all fixer of a to-do list or strategy or app or book or philosophy or mindset or habit tracker or journal or AI-powered-auto-tagging-VR-thought-sorting-second-brain that costs an arm and a leg if you want it to sync between your phone and computer but it's worth it because, after a lifetime of being both too much and not enough, it's finally The Solution™. The One Thing™ that will finally Fix You™.
At the same time I realized there is no one right way. Even non-ADHD folks struggle to stick with a once-and-for-all strategy. But the breakthrough for me was in realizing that's okay. It allowed me to see through the illusion of failure and give myself permission to use what works.
A history of designing processes and routines, nerding-out about organization, and creating systems had taught me to save any resources that might be useful. So, all along I had been instinctively compiling a simple list of Things That Worked and Things to Try, with quick descriptions of what-for and why. My original intention for this list had been to find the pattern that would show me why they had stopped working, but I noticed something else instead: Whenever a breakdown, bottleneck, or Big Change™ appeared, I would swap in new (or old) components until something fit again.
All along I had been building my Grimoire.
If you're late-diagnosed like me, you likely have plenty of systems of your own. Systems are how we made it so far before we realized most people don't have to work that hard at "normal" things, and I mean this in both the personal and societal sense— with bonus points for societal if you're female-shaped (But that's a tangent for another day). Always putting your PKW (phone, keys, wallet) in designated areas is a system, writing things down is a system, setting multiple reminders is a system, having a hamper with multiple compartments for your laundry so you can sort clothes as they come off of your body is a system, having socks that are all identical so you don't have to pair them is a system (can you tell I really hate laundry?), the list is endless.
The Grimoire gave me a framework for the cyclical nature of my systems. I set out to build it with intention, and that's when I realized how much advertising and marketing in the productivity industry was targeted toward the neurodivergent community —peddling the myth of The Solution™.
This realization led me to formalize my process and share my list, and I'm really glad I did. The feedback I received in the very niche community where it originated inspired me to keep going, and ultimately empowered me to be writing this article.
I have spent my life wishing I knew how to use my creative voice to help others, and it took the synthesis of two seemingly unrelated things I never could have imagined putting together to show me how that might be possible. How I could use so many of the things that make me who I am to show members of my community how they might leverage their own unique qualities to thrive right where they are.
Let me encourage you to keep going with the knowledge that you are never alone, keep returning to what works with openness and intention, and keep experimenting with mindfulness as you build your own grimoire.
I'll be here to help you every step of the way.
****
✂️ TL;DR
Author with late-diagnosed ADHD realized their various "systems" for managing life are like a personal grimoire (the magical version of a playbook). They critique the productivity industry's focus on singular, usually costly, solutions for neurodivergent individuals and advocate for embracing a flexible, self-curated collection of strategies that work for you.

One thing that really drives me up a wall is how apps have started auto-syncing from desktop to phone when I didn't want or ask them to.
For one of the most annoying examples of what I mean - I listen to music pretty constantly. I don't like pure silence, it makes me uncomfortable, so rare are the times when I don't have Spotify or YouTube up playing some kind of music, and one of the first things I do when I get in my car is pull Spotify up.
Except now it wants to sync with what I was listening to on my laptop and pick up from where I left off. And if I didn't want to listen to that anymore? Too bad. If I'd already picked out a different playlist I did want to listen to? Too bad. If I was already picking up from where I left off somewhere? Too bad. I'm listening to whatever was on my computer last whether I like it or not.
It doesn't ask. It just does. There is no option to turn this off that I have been able to find. Sometimes, on especially annoying days, it treats my phone like a remote control for Spotify on my laptop. Which is a feature I would never actually use and simply means I have to use the controls on the phone to make it actually play through the phone.
I can see where for someone, this might be a really nice, convenient feature, but I'm not one of those people. The times when I've wanted that continuity when sitting in my car to go somewhere aren't zero, but they're extremely few and far between.
So why am I forced to deal with this annoyance? Why can't I just turn this off and just have Spotify on my phone be Spotify on my phone?
I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.
I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.
Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.
I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.
I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.
Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.
I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.
My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.
I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?
No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!
