My top 10 of the best scenes of 2024

I know I usually create a top 10 list of the best couples of the year, but this year has either been particularly disappointing or I’ve become more picky. Either way, I couldn’t find 10 couples that I liked this time. Instead, I put together a top 10 of the best scenes. For some reason, it was easier to choose these. Let’s hope next year will be better.

Minato has a bad habit.

…Minato has a number of bad habits, but there’s one in particular that’s relevant to the current predicament and that he really ought to work on, because things like this happen more often than he’d like to admit.

‘Things like this’ meaning that Minato will find himself apparently possessed by the ghost of an anthropologist, which compels him into allowing bad situations to become worse while he passively observes.

Junpei and Ryoji had almost certainly been doing A Bit about the possibility of girls coming out to bathe this late at night, unaware of their group’s presence.

Unfortunately, they had also been tempting fate– with all the manga Junpei reads, he really ought to have known that joking like that made it basically inevitable for a group of girls to actually appear. And to truly maximize the hubris/disaster ratio, of course it would be nothing less than this specific group of girls: one for whom they’re all– with the exception of Ryoji– fully aware of the combat capabilities they possess.

Junpei had started panicking immediately, while Ryoji hadn’t seemed to grasp the severity of the situation right away. Sanada had only been irritated at first, but upon hearing Mitsuru’s voice he’d become as alarmed as Junpei. Aragaki–

Aragaki might be sleeping through the whole crisis, actually. As soon as they had settled into the water he had immediately propped himself up against one of the taller rock formations and tugged his hat over his eyes, and he hasn’t said a word since. Minato had thought he was only pretending to doze off as a pretense to avoid participating in any conversation, but now he isn’t so sure.

And Minato himself, for reasons his own mind has not seen fit to illuminate, continues to sit back and allow the spirit of academic curiosity to say ‘well, let’s see where they’re going with this.’

Junpei and Ryoji look desperately to Sanada for guidance. Sanada lays out the goal of tonight’s operation: make their escape without being seen.

Aragaki suddenly lets out an explosively judgemental sigh.

So apparently he had been faking sleep, after all.

Without uncovering his eyes, he raises one hand above the upper edge of the rocks and waves.

There’s a chorus of surprised exclamations from the girls and a brief rattle that sounds suspiciously like Aigis starting to arm herself on reflex.

Aragaki lowers his hand and kneads at his eyes through the fabric of the hat.

He speaks quietly enough that he probably meant the words for his own ears only, but Minato hears him, and evidently Sanada does as well.

Shoving the hat up from his eyes, Aragaki glares incredulously between Sanada and the direction of Mitsuru’s voice.

I was thinking about the great flood in Genesis. And suddenly I thought:

What if all the waters of the flood were His tears?

"They're hurting..." God said to Himself. "I wanted them to be so happy, but they're hurting each other... Destroying themselves! Every day they cry out to me, beging for this torment to stop... There's too much pain, too much suffering, My Son, they cannot take it anymore, I cannot take it anymore!..."

Humans were made in the image of God. For example, like God they would weep when they saw evil and injustice. Like God's, their eyes would well up with tears that streamed down their faces. Like God's, their hearts would break.

God's face became grim. "I regret creating them."

"But..." it softened at once, "I can't just destroy them, I-I can't, I love them! Oh, Noah! My dear Noah, he's good, he, he doesn't deserve to die! We can't have him die...!"

"We won't."

God decided to talk with Noah. He told him how to build an ark, down to the exact measurements that would surely save him. And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.

It didn't completely soothe the heaviness in God's holy heart. It didn't stop His eyes from stinging, His chin from shaking. But at least His Noah would be safe, and that's what mattered.

After many years of trying to keep it together, of silent, secret goodbyes, the ark was finished.

"Dad..." the Word approached His Father, as tearful as Him. "It's okay, You won't hurt them. You don't have to hold back anymore. You can let it out now."

And God began to cry.

All the fountains of the great deep were broken up. He cried for 40 days and 40 nights. He cried with the whole Trinity. He cried with all the tears of those who were hurt by the evil in the world. He wailed and weeped with grief as His tears flooded the whole Earth.

Every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground.

Only Noah remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

Given the way Shinra market the Firsts - especially Sephiroth - it seems like they're trying to go with some influencer vibes. So my question is this - how far do you think this goes?

Are there make up palettes or nails along the lines of holo taco, an energy drink like Prime marketed as SOLDIER adjacent, Vegas style restaurants where you have someone's name attached to it or even happy meal style toys (moogle meal toys?) in partnership with with other companies? Maybe cafes like you get with K-pop stars where you go and can order a person's 'favourite' drink?

I think they probably tailor brands depending on each Firsts' area of personal expression. Genesis owns hair, makeup, and general fashion. Angeal is outdoor gear, professional clothing, and really anything that involves a level of manly responsibility. Sephiroth is mostly military, with lots of time spent on stupid meaningless things like shampoo, colognes, etc.

That said, I think that Shinra also tends to go apeshit when it comes to cutesy nonsense too--just look at Stamp. So Genesis, Angeal, and Sephiroth are probably subjected to all kinds of silly and unwanted fanfare related to innocuous child-friendly media. The goal is to have them be warm and cuddly mascots for the kiddos to enjoy (SO THEY'LL ENLIST!!!) and Shinra makes sure to have its hands in EVERYONE'S pockets. There's something genuinely disturbing at having Genesis be an adorable chibi fridge magnet one moment and then having a rather scantily clad beach shoot for a men's fashion magazine the next.

Angeal is probably the least popular of the three, and mostly just gets shoved onto "assignments" that don't require that much self-debasement. Which is good news for him because he's not stuck making special guest appearances at the In-N-Out every other week. Genesis honestly enjoys the attention regardless of the circumstances. Sephiroth, conversely, is almost always completely miserable and his clear disdain for the audience requires a LOT of late evening hours spent on the editing floor.

general info about my canon:

i have memories similar to "original" rei (nge), lilith-rei (end of eva,) and rei q (rebuilds.) generally, memories similar to more than one loop/version.

i was somewhere between genderless and female , not quite a demigirl , more like bigender (agender + female )

i was oriented aroace , any possible attraction was to girls .

my relationship with shinji was purely familial , not sexual or romantic in any way . (and yes , she was transfemenine .)

kaworu was like a brother to me , i miss him very much .
