Dorky Math Stuffs!!!

So I like numbers, so I figured I'd do some 'math' per say!

SO when it comes to the first ten requests, every character has appeared of the 5 available so far, no one left out of the starting ten, obviously We haven't gotten any Asks just yet, and the only person who was ever specifically requested was Monk, 1 time, and so that technically makes Monk the 'most popular' of the first ten!

Then Survivor's appeared the most often in the first ten, appearing 8 times, with Larry being the least common to appear so far

so looking at this simple 'chart', there's a few funny lil things i personally like taking note of

Monk and Nightcat appeared plenty at the start, but Monk's only appeared once in the latter half, and Nightcat hasn't appeared at all since request #5

everyone else was pretty evenly distrubuted!!

Obviously the numbers this early on are pretty small because we're just starting out, but as we carry on and keep moving forward, I'm excited to see what changes, or who becomes popular, or so and and so forth, but for the one or two people actually interested by this stuff like I am, rest assured I WILL be keeping track, asdj;flkasdfj

SHOYO HINATA:

★ I feel like Hinata would be such a sweet boyfriend. Like SUPER sweet.

★ He'd stop his bike on his way to school just to pick up a flower that caught his attention and then he'd give it to you with a bright smile.

★ He's one of those people who know everyone. When you two go out you have to stop every five seconds because he saw a friend, or someone he met throught volleyball. He even makes conversation with his sister's friends' moms.

★ Your family loves him, final. All the little kids adore him too, he literally joins any game your cousins or little siblings are playing without hesitantion.

★ Worst at boardgames. He just doesn't understand most of them LMAO.

KAGEYAMA TOBIO:

★ Also really bad at board games. He gets so frustrated.

★ I feel like he's just as fan of ice cream as he is of milk (his favorite flavors are dark chocolate, lemon and strawberry)

★ He's one of those people who like to hang out in quiet parks, and maybe not do anything, just sit on a bench and let you talk.

★ He's lowkey scared of kids and kids are scared of him.

★ Really awkward type of sweet. He's mostly clueless about everything.

KENMA KOZUME:

★ Builds a minecraft house for the two of you.

★ I think if you don't like cats he just directly doesn't take an interest in you. Cats are the only alive being he never gets tired of.

★ he'd be so sweet to his own cats. Just petting them while he plays videogames and silently feeding them when he sees they have little food or water (he's so attentive)

★ He likes to lay on his bed, rest his head on your lap and play videogames like that. If you play with his hair Kenma melts. Forget about him ever letting you stand up again.

★ If you text him he answers dryly and shortly like "ok", "lol" or "cool"

★ "I think I did horrible in my math test..." "Cool"

★ But he really likes it when you text him and cares about what you say, that's why he would send a crying cat sticker after that short reply.

★ You don't know if he's your biggest hater or your most devoted lover. He lives to tease the hell out of you and then he'd kiss you or hug you when you got mad, chuckling and apologizing sweetly.

★ Loves your hair, he feels personally offended if you cut it or do something to it without telling him beforehand (if you don't have hair he teased you a lot but secretly loves how soft your bare head is)

SUNA RINTARO:

★ So. Many. Tiktok. Videos.

★ A LOT of brainrot videos, videos of people critizing an artist, movie or book you like just cause he's just mean like that.

★ This boy loves critizing influencers so much. You never hear the end of it. And if you join him, he's delighted.

★You're the first one to watch the fights of the Miya twins he records.

★ He is the laziest person ever. His plans mostly consist on watching movies with you or just laying on bed watching tiktok with you.

★ He has a whole album of silly and cute pictures he took of you. THERE ARE SO MANY.

OIKAWA TOORU:

★ He clings to you 24/7.

★ He loves following you around like a lost puppy, complaining about everything like the drama queen he is.

★ Oikawa loves to ramble about you and show you off to whoever will listen (Iwa-chan knows everything about you at this point)

★ When Oikawa and Iwaizumi pass by a shop, Oikawa's eyes would light up and he'd point something out and say something like "y/n-chan loves this..." and then ramble on.

★ Loves giving gifts to you.

★ I know a lot of people say he would 100% cheat on his partner. Well i dont think so. He'd be so obsessed with you, he adores you.

nerd!matt | headcannons.

nerd!matt who... is kind of introvert, but if he is in a comfort zone, he will not stop yapping. His best friends are his brothers and then his deskmate and the two guys who sit in front of them.

nerd!matt who... gets along very well with his brothers' friends too. He will even hang out with them if he runs into them on campus during his free time between classes.

nerd!matt who... is always the first to arrive to class. He had a great relationship with the teachers. Of course he's the favorite of all of 'em. You will find him casually chatting with them before class about any questions he might have, or simply wanting to have better information for his notes.

nerd!matt who... is low profile, but has something about his presence that just makes you notice when he walks into the room.

nerd!matt who... has that particular self-confidence. Good posture, firm voice but soft at the same time. If you approach him to talk, he will be so gentle and kind. And if he is in a good mood, he will even make a few jokes here and there.

Nerd!matt who... is always willing to lend his notes if someone misses a few days of class in a row.

"Hey matt..." you said, approaching his desk when his deskmate got up to go to the teacher's desk.

"Oh, hi! How you doin'? I heard you were sick, are you better?" he said, looking up from his notebook to meet your gaze, adjusting his pen on his ear to lean back on his chair, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Yeah... I'm better, thanks." you said, feeling slightly flattered by his interest. "So, um... I was wonder if... I could borrow your notes from yesterday's class."

"Of course! Just the ones from yesterday? You haven't been here for like, three days." he said searching through his notebook. "Here, the ones from Tuesday and Wednesday are also there." he said extending a small stack of paper. "Or I could send 'em to you by photos to your number... only if that works better for you."

Nerd!matt who... is super smart, of course. He knows a lot about a lot of things. Ask him about any topic you want. Music, math, sports, biology, arts, movies, whatever you want to talk about. He will be able to hold a good conversation. And even if he doesn't know much about the topic, he will listen to you attentively and then do his own research on it so he can tell you his point of view next time.

"Saw the movie." he said, after tapping twice on your desk with his finger to get your attention. "It wasn't that bad." He said as he slowly walked towards his desk, which was just a few rows behind yours.

"Did you actually watch it?" You said, frowning, remembering the conversation you two had a few days ago about this movie.

"C'mon..." He said, tilting his head slightly with a little smirk, settling into his seat. Almost in a tone of obviousness. "We need to talk at recess."

As someone who is actually in highschool, I can't help thinking about TLC characters in a Highschool AU, so you'll have to listen to my ramble.

(also, I'm not even from the USA and I'm aware that irl cliques are not as common as the media makes us think)

So this is what I think the TLC characters would've been like in High School (or school before uni in general ig)

Cinder: I feel like as a kid she was probably not popular AT ALL and was only friends with Iko, but she slowly started gaining more friends and never quite realized. She probably thinks she's a lone wolf and fails to notice she has 8 VERY close friends (and that's a significant number of friends). She's probably the kind to get good grades either cause some things are just easy for her (like math, computer science, etc) or cause she tries hard to do well (like english or geography) because she knows school is important. I know she probably never speaks in class and is always listening to music but still works.

Iko: she's 100% a popular kid. Maybe not at first but she's so friendly she ends up getting along with pretty much everyone (and probably introduces people to Cinder so she'll have more friends). I bet she is the head of some sort of club, like a fashion club or smth. And I think she would be a little viral on TikTok. I bet she doesn't try too hard to do well in school but still manages to pass most of her classes.

Kai: He's probably in the group of popular kids but isn't THE popular kid. Like he's there but kind of on the side (maybe that's just because he's not in any team sport lmao). And he probably also hangs out with other not so popular kids. I feel that he would be pretty close to Cress and she wouldn't be popular at all. And he would be very good in school.

Thorne: This is THE popular kid. He has thousands of followers on IG for no reason. He participates in some sort of team sport. He probably talks a lot in class, as in he participates and annoys everyone (including Cinder who is somehow one of his best friends but isn't in like his "group"). He does alr in school, maybe he needs tutoring for some classes (Cinder, Kai and Cress help a lot).

Scarlet: We no she's a no bs kinda girl, so I think she wouldn't have many friends (just the Rampion crew yk) but everyone knows her because she's always arguing with some teacher or dumb classmate. And I think maybe she does football (as in ⚽ not 🏈) so a lot of people have seen her face there.

Wolf: he's def popular against his will. He's always been friends with Kai and Thorne so his in that group, and his probably like a star sport player and everyone loves him cause he scores all the time. He doesn't talk to anyone who isn't a friend of his or a friend of a friend, he doesn't participate in class or makes much fuss about anything but everyone knows him. And he has a hard time with classes but his friends definitely help (Scarlet 100% teases him and Cress is by far the most helpful).

Cress: like Cinder she probably feels like no one know her but she does have friends (Rampion crew only) and the rest really doesn't notice her... I think she would be the kinda girl that people make those dumb comments about like if she speaks they'd be like "I thought she didn't talk 😲😂". She's probably like a huge nerd in every way possible. From great grades to niche interests, she is THE nerd.

Winter: kinda similar to Iko, she's super friendly and gets along with most people, she's not outstanding in school but does well. I just know she's THAT girl everyone notices in the hallway. I don't think she necessarily would be very active in the school community but she has thousands of followers as if she was the president of smth. I bet she constantly approaches Cinder and Cress and they're like "yk who I am?" And she's like "ofc silly, you are one of my best friends! Wanna hang out later?"

Jacin: this man is a ghost, if people notice him that's only cause his always next to Winter (or the rest of the Rampion crew). No one knows what he likes, or that he is a very good student.

The Rampion Crew: I don't think they would be like one big group, I feel like maybe some of them are in the same friend group (like Kai+Thorne+Wolf , Iko+Cress+Cinder, etc) but not really. Like it's rare to see them all together at once, but it's possible and they're all quite close. I think they would only be all together at once if Winter or Thorne or someone like that celebrated their birthday with only their closest friends and it turns out to be this weird group of misfits that we call the Rampion Crew lmao.

Brozone headcanons

John is afraid of flying. If he can't walk to where he needs to be, he'll talk Rhonda. If it's too far of a drive, he'll hustle. If he can't hustle his way there, then it must not be important enough for him to go. Probably stems from fear of having someone else in charge of things and it going wrong.

Clay was always the kid who basically refused to wear clothes. They'd get home and he'd be in his underwear/ naked before John Dory could stop him. As he got older, it still happened just he no longer got completely naked. Baby Clay running from JD who's trying to put a diaper on his naked ass.

John Dory knows his brothers and knows them well despite how they've changed. He hears someone softly padding down the hall and chuckles "Clay getting up to get a glass of water because he got absorbed into a book." He just knows them so well because he watched them grow up.

John Dory despite that he's been living by himself for twenty years, is still kinda strict about manners.

"Get your elbows off the table!"

"Cover your mouth when you burp."

"Sit properly."

JD, Clay and Floyd often crinkle their nose when expressing happiness, disgust, or when being playful

All the bros push things closed with their hip/butt

Bruce and John often give Clay shit for being a nerd. It's such a little thing but they each missed it so much

John Dory directs the newer Brozone music videos. He has the most experience with a camera, usually has a solid vision and the bros tend to listen to him despite how they don't like to.

Growing up, John Dory and Bruce were fiercely protective of Floyd. Because they KNEW before Floyd did. Because he saw how protective his older brothers were being, Clay was also super protective of Floyd. He didn't know why but he assumed there was a reason

John and Clay are LOUD mouths. Their voices carry

All the bros are nosy, Floyd's just the most idgaf

John Dory was a chunky baby

All the brothers are protective when it comes to their brother's partners. Brandy and Poppy are excluded. John takes on the "father" role with the shovel talking and openly talking about killing and hunting things. Bruce is much more open and doesn't directly threaten but implies it. Clay uses his ability to walk silently to make sure they're going to treat his brother right, more or less eavesdropping. Floyd is SASSING and backhanded compliments, making sure they know he doesn't like them right off the bat. Branch doesn't understand this protective feeling but doesn't fight it, he's practically waiting for his cue from the others to go feral if need be

Floyd didn't know how to tie his shoes until he was like 7. Nothing the oldest two did made it stick for him so for the longest time he wore Velcro

Random Facts about Half-Moon Cookie bcuz I like to ramble about my OCs

-Despite being a witch, they struggle to make magic using "the magic inside of her" around her, only being able to do small spells with it. Instead, he uses the world around him to fuel his spells. Kind of like potion making, but they don't have to be in bottles. You know that thing that witches will sometimes do in media where they grab items, crush them up, and a spell is created? That's what they have to do

-I wouldn't say Half-Moon Cookie is evil, but they're not good either. They're neutral/morally gray. Since their job for the witches is an archivist, they're only meant to watch Earthbread and note down it's history; not interfere (though, they don't always agree to this. They do like to go to Earthbread). Because of this, they mostly care about whether we something is entertaining or not. It's not like Burning Spice, who destroys to entertain himself, bcuz Half-Moon loves to create and hear the different stories of others. BUT, a lot of things are entertaining to them, whether it's good or not. Entire wars will happen and Half-Moon Cookie will treat it like its his favorite show. It's why, despite being a witch, they don't hate the beasts. The Beasts are an interesting story to them. (They don't want them to get the souljams though bcuz after the entertainment of the fight, civilization will most likely crumble and that leads to no new entertaining stories for them)

-They're good at math (don't ask me to do any, I'm shit at it)

-Half-Moon Cookie is aspec and doesn't care to be in a romantic relationship themself, but they like romance that other cookies have and think it's interesting

-Despite being aspec and not caring to have a relationship, they do like to playfully flirt with other cookies and will probably flirt back if a cookie starts

-They sometimes eat the doughs of dead cookies. In their mind, they don't think it's a big deal bcuz they're already dead

-She likes to teach. She gets super happy when people ask her questions about Earthbread because she gets to be a nerd about it

-Despite basically being a god of knowledge, he also had ADHD brain so they can easily forget things before they randomly come back to him

-Half-Moon Cookie doesn't lie. She might not tell the full truth, or she might not know something so she'll just guess, but she doesn't lie. If she's guessing or it's a theory or she gets something wrong, she'll let you know

-There's a whole list of emotions Half-Moon just barely feels anymore or only feels in specific circumstances. They used to be able to, but after being alive so long, they also learn how little everything matters. They don't feel embarrassed because they don't care what other cookie's or witches think of them, but they do feel ashamed when they get something wrong. They rarely get angry, but they get annoyed. The only time they'll be at shouting levels angry is when someone repeatedly ruins archives. Even then, it takes a bit because they can recognize honest mistakes. They rarely ever feel fear since it's hard to fear for your life when no one around you has the power to kill you (except other witches)

-When asked what their Pronouns are, Half-Moon Cookie will answer, "Anything! Be as creative as you want!" When asked what gender they are, they'll give various different awnsers each time, all wildley absurd

-Their sense of boundaries related to other cookies is basically nonexistent. It's their job to watch, so they're very nosy and know practically everything about each cookie's personal life. Despite this, they don't like other cookies snooping in their personal life

-While she can see the past and the present, she can't see the future and can only make predictions

As a Liberal arts student who used to struggle sm with maths and science in school, the minute I found out jiseok was a science major AND built his own computer I fell for him 10x more (im easily swooned and imo people who are good in what I'm bad at are automatically hot). This also got me thinking of a lil college scenario (where I'm from college isnt university. Its where u might go after high school and before uni. By that point you've also reached age of consent just to make that super clear).

Anywayss imagine u and him are together, going to the same college but he's like in the Yr above or something. Your both top students, acing all your classes, but you're really struggling in science. Since that's jiseoks best subject u tell him about it and like the good bf he is, he offers to tutor you. So that's how u find yourself in your room on his lap as he teaches you the material. So far so good right? But thing is he starts to get a lil frustrated because even after explaining the concepts a few times your still not comprehending it even though he knows u can definitely figure it out coz ur his smart baby. But in your defence you wouldve probably grasped the content better if he didn't decide to make himself comfortable inside of you! You say that to him but he doesn't really like that response. He's trying to be a good bf and help save your grade and you're there giving him attitude like a brat. What's that all about?!

🤓 Johnathon HCs!

HE IS A GEMINI. Like come on. Talks a lot, nerdy, silly guy. He is a canonically silly guy! In his first fight with Miles he pretends to have hurt his nose (he doesn’t have one) to trick him. So silly! I would bet there's Capricorn somewhere in there too. And Pisces. I’ll make this man’s whole birth chart if you dare me. Just dare me. I’m insane.

Jason Schwartzman used to be in a band in the 00s. I think it would be cool if Johnathon also had some sort of interest in music. I think he would have tried to learn guitar in college but only got a few chords in before life got too chaotic and every now and then he thinks of picking it back up. 

He is also one of those guys who fanboys over old ass music, especially from the 60s and 70s. Loves Jazz, Funk and Prog Rock. Look at this man and tell me he is not a prog rock guy. He is a nerd, he might even be *shudders* a math rock guy. I also think he would have one completely random favorite artist that has nothing to do with the things listed above, like, idk Lizzo. Or Princess Nokia. He just looks like the type.

I think everyone agrees Johnathon is at least in his thirties, but I put him down as thirty-three in the end. I did that because Olivia is thirty-five tops in ITSV (according to Peter) and since he was her subordinate it makes sense that he would be just a little bit younger than her. 

“But hey! That's too young to get a PhD!” you might say, but I think Johnny is an overachiever. I think he was one of those super genius kids that got in early in college and lived for academia. A teacher's pet even.

He is a workaholic, so when he quits his job he gets really lost and doesn't know what to do with himself. He might have a new job soon doing what he loves, so you’re going to need to be on his ass so he doesn’t fall back into his old habit of overworking. 

I like to think that Miles would get an internship under Johnathon a few years in the future and they would learn a lot together. Jonathan would probably take a week to figure out he is Spider-Man and would cover for him when the boy needs to disappear. This actually sounds like a fun drabble to write about.

Johnathon may be a genius, but like he said, he is not too familiar with relationships. I think he might've had one or two in the past, but everything slowed down when he started working at Alchemax. “I’ve been told” is referring to those past relationships, in which he was probably told that he works too much and never has time to spend with his partners. He’s not been with anyone for a long time and his game consists of buying the first comic book he saw on a shelf in order to ask you out.

But that doesn't mean he is cold. Quite the opposite really, Johnathon is very touchy-feely. He hasn't been with anyone for a while and misses touching and being touched. He is most comfortable when being at least 70% curled around you. 

He smokes Dunhill Carltons (he likes to feel fancy), but less now that he isn't as stressed from work. Like he said, he used to go on walks to smoke and pass by the comic book store you work at before you guys had even met. I like to think he developed a little crush back then.

Had his tattoos done in college, so they are very faded now. He doesn’t think of redoing them because the mere thought of having to stay seated for hours in the same place feeling pain stresses him out. He was a lot more easygoing when he had them done.

He did have a superhero phase when he was a kid. He would fantasize a lot about having superpowers and flying away when the bullies showed up. Never thought about fighting back. Before becoming the Spot, he wasn't the confrontational type. The hero thing fizzled out as he grew older, but he would always dream about being stronger. Being a better version of himself in a kinda superficial, but understandable way.

He still has a bunch of action figures, he thinks they look cool. If you give him one, he won't even care if he knows the character or not, he just likes them.

Even though Johanthon says he is “good-looking”, he does add “for a scientist” in the end. I think he tries to mask his insecurities with humor, always putting himself down with a joke, always saying he’s too old, too corny, too nerdy. In the back of his head he knows the hair and the glasses are kind of a look, but he doesn’t feel handsome. You help as much as you can, but that’s an obstacle for him to overcome by himself. I think after i’m really serious this time, baby he gets better at this.

🕳️ The Spot HCs!

For clarification: the story of i’m not gonna turn into a cosmic anomaly and leave you forever stretches the plot of ATSV to a few weeks instead of a day. Just think of it like Spot taking a little longer to power up instead of a few hours.

Since he was forced to do crime to survive, I think he would've thought to himself: "Well, since I have to go rob a store anyway, might as well be that one where that cute cashier works at." 

Yes, Spot starts tracking and following you after you two meet. He uses his computer nerd powers for evil. A very unhealthy way of dealing with a crush, I think.

Spot can eat but he doesn't get any nutritional value from food. When you drink wine together or when he burns his tongue (?) from tea it's just a placebo effect. I like to think that Johnathon's mind is still inside The Spot's body, so he eats just for habit. He says he gets hungry all the time, but it's actually a deep need to consume everything around him. As he powers up, Spot gets more confident in himself. He thinks the stronger he gets the further away he gets from Johnathon, his old self. Which, in the end, turns out to be true.

I think at first you don't really believe Spot is an actual supervillain which is why when you see him after the fight in Mumbattan it's such a shock. In a way, you did the same thing Miles did when he underestimated him, even if for whole different reasons. I think even though he knows you care about him, Spot knows you don't see him as a threat and that makes him want to impress you more. 

Spot knows that the reason you keep getting new jobs is because his own crazy supervillain life keeps interfering with yours, so he tries to keep it as much hidden from you as possible. He thinks what you don’t know can’t hurt you! As Johnathon, he feels guilty at first that you’re changing your whole life to go with him to New Jersey, BUT this time it was your choice! Not because of supervillain shenanigans!

He does love you (even if it was too early to know) and wants to be with you, but his head is so lost in the supervillain game, he thinks he can’t stop now. You never really realized how serious he was about “being stronger”. Which is why you never tried to stop him.

I chose I’d Rather Be With You as a theme song because I think it’s a song Johnathon/Spot would enjoy. But I also like how the lyrics match both their feelings towards you, in both fics. He wants to fly away with you once he gets all powered up, he loves your smile, etc. He does want to be your friend until the end as the Spot, but as Johanthon he is really committed to work on his bad habits in order to be with you. We gon' make it this time, baby! I cry, damnit. 

It’s also a surprisingly gender-neutral song, with no physical descriptions in it! Anyone can put themselves in the lover's place. Bootsy Collins is cool like that.

I like to think that, in the end, Spot didn't erase himself from the timeline. He just reloaded an old save. Does that make sense? Like you said, your relationship will always have happened, just in an old, non existent dimension. And since Johnathon and you still get dreams and deja vu about the whole thing (think of it as dimensional residue or whatever), you do have all the EXP of the old save. Johnathon, after going through the literal end of all existence and then forgetting about it, feels something compelling him to finally take a chance and enter the comic book store. It’s like when your body goes through something and it remembers later, even if your mind doesn't. Here's a (hopefully) comprehensive timeline:

r/daggerheart is toxic AF...and I love it

Note: This is just a rant about the subbreddit and their inability process any critique of the game that goes against their narrative of the game. The game itself has a lot of good parts, which I really like. But this post isn't about the game, but the subbreddit.

So you know, I am a nerd that like to nerd about games and probabilities. I've been interested in Daggerheart for a while because I am a fan of Critical Role, and the beta playtest rules recently came out. I was super excited, so I read through the PDF as soon as I got the chance, also started a game with my partner.

And honestly, there are some great parts to the game. But there are also some design decisions that made me scratch my head. So I shared some of my thoughts on r/daggerheart.

Oh boy did I poke a beehive. That subbreddit is pretty hostile toward anyone who dares to criticize the game. My first post critiquing the complexity of the damage system got down voted to oblivion. They told me I shouldn't have opinion on the very things I can read because I haven't played the game. So when I played the game and posted my feedback, these folks dismissed my criticisms because I was suffering from "new system syndrome."

Oh, and the comments. They were something else. The sub is dominated by a group of people who are pushing the narrative that Daggerheart is "rules-light" and "very easy" and "less math than DND."

Yes, Daggerheart is a rules-light game with a 377 page rulesbook. Because this is still beta, it is missing a ton of rules, not to mention artwork. But sure, it's a rules-light game. Because what is page count if not just a number?

Yes, Daggerheart is "very easy" if you ignore the fact that every character has HP, minor damage threshold, major damage threshold, severe damage threshold, stress, hope, and armor on top of your abilities and backstory and everything else you are trying to juggle.

Yes, Daggerheart has less math than DND because instead of just subtracting the damage from the HP, you compare the damage to each of the thresholds to decide whether or not you want to reduce the damage by armor, then determine how much you lower the HP by, unless it is below the minor threshold, in which case you take stress, but if you are filled up on stress, you take 1 HP. Oh, and you know, if you also ignore the fact that you roll two dice, add the numbers, and check to see which one is bigger to decide which one is bigger every single time you want to do something.

So yeah, if you ignore all of those very obvious things that I can see with my very own eyes, my own experience of running the game, my experience having played a rules-light RPG like Candela, they are right: Daggerheart is a rules-light game that is very easy to play with less math than DND /s.

Seriously, these folks will fight you tooth-and-nail to tell you that what you can see is wrong. They will gaslight you, tell you about how 11-years can play Daggerheart, their 73 year old mother can play Daggerheart, tell you that you are playing the game wrong, DND has taught you bad habits, and that your critique doesn't matter because all you want is the game to be more like DND.

And I love it. I love seeing the cognitive dissonance. I love going at it with these die-hard fans. And it's pretty easy on my part. I don't need to get mean—all I need to do is point out very obvious things. And you know, no foul no harm—we keep going until one or both of us get sick of arguing about whatever specific thing we are arguing about.

Anyway, enough of my rant.

I want Daggerheart to succeed. I really do. I think Matt Mercer and friends are pretty good folks, and I find their story inspiring, and I would love to see them succeed. I hope that Daggerheart developers listen to the critical feedbacks, make the game better, and not try to push any weird narratives (like they did with Candela vs FitD).

Hey Slug! I've been baffled over this for a while now and realized I could just ask you for your opinion. Names. Specifically, Hypmic characters mostly using first names to address each other. I- I'm obviously not all that familiar with Japanese traditions, I'm just the usual anime nerd, but I thought I had a grasp on how people use names over there by now and Hypmic is kinda confusing me? Why do they all use first names to address each other? But sometimes people still use last names??

Short answer: Because, for the most part, the people talking to each other are close friends in casual settings.

Long answer: Using first names vs last names has to do with the level of emotional distance between speaker and listener. Regardless of language, we all adjust the level of formality we speak at depending on whether we're talking to close friends, acquaintances, strangers, or authority figures. It's not socially appropriate to present yourself as best buds with your boss or teacher. Similarly, you might jokingly call a close pal a bitch, but this level of closeness would be inappropriate for a coworker. In Japanese, emotional distance is more strictly codified than in English via varying degrees of polite language, name honorifics, and first name vs last name, but the basic idea involved isn't especially different from English. Most of the people we talk to on a day-to-day basis are classmates and coworkers. If you speak Japanese in your work or school setting, you'll likely use last names for the classmates and coworkers you don't know especially well ("Yamamoto-kun's the guy I sit next to in math, but we don't hang out after school or anything." "Satou-san and I both have the opening shift on Tuesdays, and I chat with her whenever we're on break at the same time. But we don't text outside of work or anything." These kinds of people.) because you have a sense of emotional distance from them. For those you feel closer to and would consider a friend, one way of indicating that closeness is by using their first names. For really close friends or romantic partners, you can drop honorifics altogether to indicate that you feel super, super close to them. (As a side note, some people aren't comfortable doing this at all and still refer to best friends and romantic partners with honorifics. That's largely a matter of personality.) We see Hypmic characters doing this for their classmates and coworkers in rare instances of classroom or workplace scenes, but the majority of Hypmic takes place outside of these settings. Since each team is comprised of close pals hanging out, there's no need to put up a barrier of emotional distance. Some notable exceptions:

The characters who were once close pals but have since had falling outs still largely use first names for one another sans honorifics. This is meant as a deliberate insult, since they're no longer close enough for this lack of distance to be acceptable. Sound confusing? Let's go back to the bitch example for a minute. Calling your best friend a bitch? Probably fine. Calling someone you had a fight with a bitch? Yeaaaah, no, that doesn't fly. Same deal here.

Even when they're friends in TDD, Ichirou still calls Samatoki "Samatoki-san" because he treats Samatoki like an older, respected figure. He doesn't want to try and portray himself as on Samatoki's level. The "-san" is dropped after their fallout because he no longer looks up to Samatoki.

Jirou and Saburou call Ichirou various affectionate derivatives of "oniisan" or "aniki" instead of his first name. "Aniki" is a matter of respect, but "Ichi-nii" and "niichan" are more about social custom than respect for Ichirou based on his individual merits. Even if you're an English speaker who feels very close to your parents, you probably aren't on a first-name basis with them due to social customs. It's the same idea here. Japanese-speaking siblings can be super close to one another and still use variants of oniisan/oneesan even while otherwise speaking to their sibling like a close friend. Many other languages share similar customs.

Ditto for Nemu calling Samatoki "oniichan."

Ramuda calls almost everyone by their first name (usually without honorifics or with overly familiar honorifics) in a way that is socially inappropriate. He's stating that he feels very, very close to the listener, regardless of whatever the listener thinks. This is in line with Ramuda's extremely outgoing persona and the "everyone's idol" trope. He gives his love to EVERYONE! He's best buds with EVERYONE! But plenty of people (rightfully) find it off-putting or boundary smashing. It's another example of the way Ramuda breaks social conventions, especially in a cute or childish way. Like "Oops, tee-hee! I'm just too young and adorable to know better! I just wanna be your friend :3"

Even when they were close friends, Jakurai never called Ramuda by his first name. He instead uses "Amemura-kun" (as an aside, Jakurai attaches "-kun" to most of the cast members' names because they're a fair deal younger than him. It's not demeaning. It actually conveys some degree of warmth) which leaves some measure of distance between them at all times. It's not explicitly stated exactly why he does this. It's reasonable to assume TDD!Jakurai has some reservations about getting close to Ramuda, although it's debatable whether this is due to suspicion about Ramuda's behavior, trauma from his fight with Hitoya, or simply an attempt to establish socially acceptable distance because Ramuda utterly fails to do so. (Also, I think Jakurai might combust into a ball of embarrassed flames if he tries, but that's neither here nor there.)

Very, very significantly, Doppo and Hifumi never refer to Jakurai by name, instead using some variant of "sensei." They mean this in a good way--they respect him a lot--but as Jakurai occasionally comments on, this creates a sense of distance between them that he doesn't like. He wants to be treated like an equal instead of being placed on a slight pedestal above his other two friends.

Since I'm talking about honorifics here too, Juushi calls Hitoya and Kuukou "Hitoya-san" and "Kuukou-san" even when they don't return the favor. Like I mentioned previously, this strikes me as a matter of personality. It's not that Hitoya and Kuukou disrespect Juushi or that Juushi doesn't consider them to be close friends, but he's just a bit shier than either of them. Well, it's not hard to be shier than Hitoya and Kuukou...

Rei is on a first-name basis with Ichijiku in an effort to be rude with her. She presumably does not want him to call her "Ichijiku-chan," but Rei most certainly does not care.

Nemu is also on a first-name basis with Ichijiku (Ichijiku-san), which I'm chalking up to the fact that she and Ichijiku do seem to be close outside of work.

Also, when characters talk about someone they don't know well, they usually use first and last name without honorific. That's pretty similar to English conventions, too. "Hey, you know that comedian Sasara Nurude?" "Hey, you know that actor Jack Black?" Same deal.

Big Time Rush Season 1, Episode 1: "Big Time Audition" PART 1

Well, here we go! I'm super excited to be revisiting this show after so many years. I was so deep in the fandom back when the show was on, but it feels like going into it with a blank slate at this point. I have no idea what the fandom is like anymore and also forgot so many of the episodes. Ugh, I wish I could remember what my BTR blog from like 2011 used to be called (and if it even still exists; I might have deleted it). It'd be so cool to take a look at it.

I'm gonna try to just jump right in here. A few things first: I'll be pausing the episodes perodically as I watch in order to write up my posts on here, so it'll be a very "real-time" depiction of my experience, lol. Posts will also always be put under a "read more" on account of length.

Y'all the smile on my face at just the beginning few seconds of the episode. It brings me right back to 2009, watching the premiere with my sister. And I love how there's really no time wasted in making it loud and clear what each of the boys' roles are in the group and what their personalities are like.

Kendall's first line is literally a little motivational pep talk. He's trying to motivate them to do something that's going to get them into trouble, but still...it's in character. (btw, I will absolutely be focusing in on Kendall's character development—and my criticisms of it—as I move through the series)

Anyway, continuing on down the line: Logan counters Kendall's words with math, thus promptly labeling him as The Nerd of the group. Carlos jumps at the chance to cause some chaos (very Carlos. he was my favorite, btw) and James is just not paying attention to any of it. He's just standing there preening.

James is another one who changes a good deal from this first episode, I think. I mean, if I'm remembering correctly, he stays sort of self-absorbed and concerned with his looks, but not quite to THIS degree.

Also, the guys all work well together and fit, but I can't help but wonder how this group came together. It's such an oddball mixture of extreme personalities that you'd be hard-pressed to find in real life. In fact, if it were real life, they probably wouldn't be able to tolerate each other at all, let alone be friends. But that's the beauty of the show.

They do all eventually help Carlos turn the sprinklers on.

Troublemakers. Oh! And I spy plaid on Kendall. He wears plaid in like every episode, doesn't he? I remember that being a thing.

Logan's hair looks very dark. Was it dyed for this episode? I don't remember it being that dark.

I'm only ONE MINUTE into this episode. Yikes; these are going to be long posts, aren't they?

Yes, Carlos gives James the helmet right before they get pummeled by the mob of angry girls! Kendall knows James has to protect his face! Just a little over a minute in, and we have a leader of the group firmly established.

Meanwhile, the guys are nursing their injuries back at Kendall's house. It's so funny to me the way that Kendall seems to have the rest of them (mainly Carlos?) "trained" in a way? He tells Carlos to give James the helmet, and Carlos does do without hesitation. Then, when James starts dancing on the couch, all he has to do is say Carlos's name, and Carlos tackles James to the floor.

But when you've got a group of buddies like that, someone has to step up and take the reins, and that someone is Kendall Knight.

Look at these goofballs smiling as Carlos and James beat each other up.

The FLIP PHONES

Amazing. This show already kind of feels like a fun little time capsule.

I'd be remiss to not talk about this specific moment (when James and Carlos are throwing hands again) that I recall the fandom latching onto back in the day. As things start spiraling and glass starts flying, Logan simply calls Kendall's name, and Kendall immediately runs to Logan's side.

This is the point in which I probably start overanalyzing, but. Well, that's half the fun of this project, isn't it?

It speaks volumes about who Kendall is, what his role is in the group, and how the other three (especially Logan) look at him. Things are getting out of hand, and Logan is overwhelmed. So what does he do? Simply call for Kendall to take control and fix it. Because that's who Kendall is, right? He's Mr. Hold Everyone Together, Fix Everything All the Time, Carry the World on His Shoulders Guy.

I'll be delving more in that in future posts, I'm sure. Many thoughts.

Also, can we talk about how James and Carlos are just. Destroying Mrs. Knight's home?? Throwing things and about to hit each other with a lamp and a...whisk?? Is that what Carlos has? As a kid, I was like, "ahahaha, funny," but now I'm like, "I hope Mama Knight made those boys pay for every item they ever broke while in her house."

I was originally going to break this up into just 2 parts, but it's already pretty long, and I don't even know if anyone will read it, so I'm going to wrap it up right here for now. I'm sure once I get into the actual series, the posts will be shorter, but there's a lot of ground being laid in this episode, and I'm also still finding my footing on this blog.

Age: 12

Hero Name: Spider-Boy

The first-born son of Commissioner Giselle Le Blanc and Caline Bustier. Gained powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider similar to the one that bit Socqueline, a.k.a. Spider-Girl. Aside from the usual benefits of Spider Powers (shooting webs, crawling on walls and super reflexes and strength) he is able to turn invisible and absorb electricity, though he can’t do it on command.

He's never been afraid to take risks, which is why he jumped at the chance to become Socqueline's protege. The Teen Titans see him as a little brother and he works hard to eventually take his place on the team.

Has a job as delivering Le Rapport Quotidien (The Daily Report) newspapers through various streets of Paris. Often has to use his Spidey-Senses to avoid collisions with cars.

Vince's Friends and Acquaintances.

Chris Lahiffe

Age: 12

The younger brother of Nino, a.k.a. Sonic Bat. He's the opposite of his older bro in almost every way. An intellectual and uptight kid who tries to act if he's already an adult. This can lead to him stressing about not just helping Vince as Spider-Boy, but also maintaining his usual standard of grades in school.

His constant perfectionism and slight know-it-all tendencies can get on his friends’ nerves from time to time, but they love him nonetheless. He serves as a bit of a Yin to Kiran’s Yang with their opposing personalities. Sasha Bruel and the Cesaire twins like to rile him up at times.

Chris considers himself a boy of science and logic, though seeing Doctor Strange has given him an interest in time travel. Perhaps he could pursue a career at OsCorp Industries...

Kiran Anciel

Age: 12

Marc, a.k.a Writer Bat's little brother, Kiran is unquestionably the heart of the group with his positive outlook and easygoing demeanor. He keeps his friends spirits up, particularly Vince, Chris, and his girlfriend Sasha.

Currently training alongside Sasha in the Batcave to become Batheroes just like their older brothers. The only problem Kiran faces is his stamina, since it doesn't take much to put him to sleep!

He and Marc share a close relationship. He'll often calm the older teen down, and Marc helps Kiran to find new creative outlets. Kiran idolizes his big brother and aims to be a hero like him someday. He also loves listening to Marc’s stories.

Sasha Bruel

Age: 12

Something of a mother hen to her friends, Sasha is the one who steps in whenever Vince gets himself hurt, and while she may not show much emotion outwardly, no one can deny how much she cares.

She idolizes her brother Ivan, a.k.a. Strength Bat. It's why her and Kiran are training to become heroes in the future. And so they can help out their web-slinging buddy. The entire Batcrew and the Titans will do anything to keep them safe.

Sasha still shares an incredibly close relationship with her brother, and he is one of the few people she shows her softer side to. The others are her besties, and especially her boyfriend Kiran. They have an adorable relationship and their brothers approve wholeheartedly.

Ella and Etta Cesaire

Age: 12

The twin sisters of Alya, a.k.a. Reporter Bat. While they were a lot more hyperactive when they were younger, they still like to make mischief every now and again. They're almost always on their phones, whether using social media, filming their friends and themselves or filming the heroes.

They're little shit-stirrers to be sure, usually winding Chris up for a laugh. Still, they care about their friends and family very much.

Ella's a jock and currently on the track and soccer team. On the contrary, Etta's a nerd who knows how to code and whizzes her science and math classes.

Vince's Little Bro

August Le Blanc-Bustier

Age: 8

Vince's younger brother. A total sweetie who thinks the world of his bro and is always willing to help whenever he can. Possibly the only kid in the world who's happier than Ayesha or Kiran, and generally has a problem with saying no to people.

August has a notorious sweet tooth, and usually has some kind of snack on him. The others enjoy spending time with him and are quite protective of him despite him being rather tall for his age, which is something he unfortunately gets bullied for. Still, he doesn't let it phase him.

Even though one of his mothers is Commissioner of the Paris Police Department, August has always felt a soft spot for criminals. He wants to understand why criminals do the things they do. Caline and Commissioner Gisele feel that he has a bright future in Paris's mental health services.

Soldier 11: - Couldn't give a shit. I don't care for her in the slightest. She's just orange Anby but with less personality

Nekomata: - She's super cute! I love how her animations look and her voice is actually really nice imo. Poor girl has already been white washed in a ton of official art but that's just the fate of being 'the brown one' in a hoyo game ig

Von Lycaon: - This man is genuinely convincing me into learning how to draw furries. Attractive,,,

Koleda: - My daughter!!! She looks super fun and honestly feels more like a Pokémon character than a hoyo character. Most of these characters actually feel like Pokémon characters

Alexandrina Sebastiane: - I think she's...kinda just there. She's pretty, and the fact that she has dolls is cool. I also like how all of Victoria Housekeeping is based on classic monsters. But she doesn't have that much appeal to me imo. Like I like how Lycaon kinda has a father type relationship with Corin and Ellen is really cool to me standalone but Rina just kinda feels like she's there

Piper: - I mean there's not much about the Sons since they were announced a week before the game came out. Close enough, Welcome back Herta Star Rail

Lucy: - Similarly to Piper there's not much about her since she was dripped a day before the special program. But also she just has a cooler design. I love the biker aesthetic. Also her bat is cool. Also pigs <3

Corin: - Absolutely smitten. I love her design and how utterly miserable she looks. She does not wanna be here. Also love her giant ass pizza cutter. Look, I just perfer cute characters i don't make the rules my brain does

TASK #11 WRITE A LETTER

Young Darrius,

I'm writing you this letter as an adult. A thirty-something year old man who lives in a house by the beach with roommates and two dogs and teaches American history for a living. An adult who wants to look back on those days that you laid in that twin bed in Chicago, in the room you shared with two brothers, staring at the ceiling, wondering if someday, somehow, you would be able to realize your dreams, and let you know that yes, you can.

Childhood is fun, so embrace it. When your dad asks you to put down the book and go fishing, do it. Pack a couple extra sandwiches and root beers, wear something comfortable, don't think about the math homework that you have to finish, or how important that book reading is to your overall grade. When your mom calls you Darrey and lets her friends pinch your cheeks, don't sigh dramatically and mumble about wanting to be anywhere else, just talk to them, smile, relish in that attention. When your brothers want to wrestle, wrestle. When your sisters want to help you dress for class, let them. Enjoy family vacations, enjoy nights out with your friends, embrace it all, because soon you'll be a teenager.

And as much as you want to focus on your studies, don't feel guilty about taking a night off to go to the movies, or hang out at a friend's house! But whatever you do, don't feel guilty if you turn down a date, or just don't feel interested in dating. I can tell you, as an adult, it's okay to not be into that; to not want to date or be intimate with anyone, so please don't worry about that, or think something's wrong with you. The teenaged years are going to be awkward and constantly make you doubt yourself, but move through them, it gets better. Eventually, you'll graduate, and then, you'll go to college.

What I said about not worrying about not wanting to date? True, but it's okay if you do, and it's okay if you try to give away your heart, and things just don't work out. Try new things, but don't feel pressured. Stick with what makes you happy, and the right people will understand. And study! Go to that party, yeah, and practice your drums (it will come in handy later), but it's alright to stay at home and read and read and read, because it will pay off someday. You'll cross that stage and get your diploma and then comes adulthood, which... is terrifying, sure, don't get me wrong.

But you'll learn to grow. You'll move to Michigan and think things are great, and then it's going to fall apart, but it's okay. You'll pick yourself back up and you'll get a job offer in Maine (I know... stick with me, here), and be scared to death, but pack up to move to the coast. Live in a tiny apartment. Teach students at a level maybe lower than you were hoping... and then your dream job will open up. Community college professor, tasked with teaching American History. And they allow you to teach it your way, to be open and honest and make history fun for everyone who is willing to learn. That's the best part. Eventually, you'll earn enough money to go in with roommates on a house, and really, you should be part of a sitcom. A teacher, a tattoo artist, a non-alcoholic cocktail barn owner and a DJ that's a wiz a social media. FRIENDS, who? Most importantly, you'll finally feel happy, finally feel like you... that's a good feeling.

... oh, but. The Bears still haven't won a Super Bowl since you were born, so don't get too excited.

I know that right now, laying in bed, looking up at the glow in the dark stars that your brothers insisted on having, it doesn't always seem possible. You love Chicago, you can't imagine moving away, but you don't know what opportunities are there for you. You're scared you're not wired right, you're worried you won't make friends -- but it's all going to be okay. You'll be okay, you great big history nerd. Your heart and your brain are not your enemies, not the things holding you back. They're what get you to where you're supposed to be.

Notes on Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?! Vol. 1 by FUNA

That's right! I managed to read more fiction in less than a week! Go me! Also there's 19 volumes in the series, so, uh, I'm not going to be super careful about spoilers. Especially because this volume very much felt like it's the set up/prelude for the rest of the series.

Okay, I could be wrong in that the main character will have just as many twists and turns in the direction of her life for the whole time? But what do I know? Maybe she'll go through 3 aliases every volume?

So. Girl who was regarded a prodigy in the modern world (and miserable because of it), meets Truck-kun.* She's offered reincarnation into a magic world, with her memories intact, and rather than asking for any special powers, she asks to be average. She does not think to define what scale should be used, or what definition of average should be used. (Math nerds rejoice, because that will get discussed!)

The thing is, 18 year olds aren't very wise in the ways of the modern world if they are pampered bookworms, and living (or reliving) a childhood doesn't much help with that either. So at 10 years old... her decision making skills are.... unique. She causes a lot of her own problems. It's delightful. So yes, I am going to see if the library has book 2.

I also have trust issues, because I read way too many manga where the vibes from vol.1 vs vol.4 were pretty hecking different. I know this is a light novel instead, but.... anyway.

Not sure if I will review every volume or just check in about the series every so often. Any preferences out there?

*Why is death by truck so popular in this genre anyway? I guess it's quick and easy.
