Leander & Pomegranate Wine

I think this small change in the Touchstarved demo update has a lot of symbolism behind it. Spoilers ahead!

In both the original demo and the updated demo, after MC had been taken back to the Wet Wick, Leander offers MC an alcoholic beverage. If MC accepts, they receive a drink that is supposedly the 'local' specialty.

In the original demo, this drink was 'plum gin'.

In the updated demo, this drink is 'pomegranate wine'.

The pomegranate has a lot of assosiated symbolism: life & death, fertility, and the feminine. If you've been in the TS fandom for a while, then these may sound familiar: Leander has very similar symbolism all over him.

But if you're unaware, here's the rundown:

Leander's belt is in the shape of the 'Triple Moon' pagan symbol, which represents fertility, death, and birth & rebirth. It's also assosiated with Hecate; a Greek Goddess of magic and witchcraft.

His earring contains an ouroboros: a serpant eating it's own tail. This represents the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

His assosiated flower is the lily, which represents femininity, fertility, and rebirth.

On the lapel on his coat, he has the chain with the alchemical symbol for earth. This represents mother earth and the colour green.

So in general, the pomegranate wine can be see as a continuation of Leander's themes of life, death, and rebirth & the feminine. However, the pomegranate has a very famous Greek myth that really fits this updated demo version of Leander: The Abduction of Persephone.

The gist of this myth is:

Zeus (King of the Cosmos) kidnapped Persephone to be the wife of Hades (God of the dead & King of the Underworld). Persephone's mother, Demeter (Goddess of agriculture), grows angry and forces a constant winter in grief. Beacause of this, Zeus forces Persephone to be sent back to her mother. However, before she departed, Hades gave Persephone a pomegranate seed to eat. Because she has eaten food from the underworld, she is forced to stay there for some time of the year.

(Main sources were Apollodorus & the Homeric Hymn 'To Demeter')

This myth is meant to serve as an aetiology of the seasons in Greek myth, but for us Touchstarved fans, the focus is on how the pomagrante is used as a means of entrapment.

Throughout the demo, not-so-subtly Leander places control and 'entrapment' over the MC.

MC is only able to talk to Leander when they bring up Kuras. Otherwise they wouldn't get past the Adderstone.

When it comes to touching him for the first time, if MC holds back, leander will grab their hand anyways. If MC does touch him, MC's shock makes them pulls back a bit, but Leander 'catches' their wrist before they can pull back.

Insists info on MC's curse remains between the two of them. Also calls it 'our little secret' in Leander's path later on.

Gives MC a room: a room Leander knows more about than MC. I'll note that Leander didn't choose the specific room, but he's likely familar with all of the Wick.

Insists he be the one to buy you a drink (instead of Ais).

Leander to MC: "Then how would you feel about being on a leash?"

MC about Leander: "I feel trapped in the softness of his expression, and the lightness of his touch".

Leander to MC: "I'm a little jealous. Part of me wants to keep you all to myself".

Leander tends to choose where conversations happen (such as suggesting going outside or going upstairs).

Leander locks the door with MC and him inside the bedroom during his path.

Leander to MC: "I won't leave you, and you won't leave me."

Leander to MC (in response to 'what do you want'): "Too many things. But I'll start with you."

I believe this allusion to be intentional; Leander is offering MC something of a pomegranate, MC trusts Leander to consume it, and he will later 'entrap' the MC. This dynamic seems to be the core of his full route.

There's also the matter of Hades being the one to have Persephone eat the pomegranate seed without her understand what it will do to her. I can father two possibe meanings with this.

The first, is that it places Leander in the position of Hades, God of the dead.

The second, is that MC might not know what they're getting into with Leander.

Favourite pre-timeskip Sanji moments

(1) Baratie arc when sanji served fresh food for don krieg despite everyone telling him that krieg was notorious for betraying people. Sanji still served the food because of his value of "feeding the hungry no matter what"

(2) Sweet sanji preparing bentos for Luffy vivi and a special drink for Vivi's duck karoo so they can go explore the little garden island. Also packing and tying the lunches for the kids (luffy and karoo) by himself

(3) water 7 Sanji following his principle of "never waste food" while fighting CP7's ramen guy wanze (who had a full ramen armour and sanji cut his armour up and served the ramens all in different plates around the kitchen)

(4) thriller bark Sanji holding an unconscious nami up so she won't get injured while he takes all the hits from Absalom He's not just a simp, he genuinely cares for nami

(5) water 7 Sanji smoking a cigarette while spying and finding out sensitive government information

(6) Post enies lobby filler sanji crying throwing up stressing over finding out the right spices of a fried rice. He is a true chef at heart and has so much love for his craft

(7) post skypiea filler G-8 arc sanji when someone says he is better than all of the navy chefs and sanji cutely offers to give his recipes to them. He is so cute kind and humble

(8) sabaody sanji kicking the Celestial dragon knowing what'll happen and not giving a fuck anyway

(9) skypiea sanji being all big smiles and happy while showing conis the bento he has arranged for her and telling them how arranging food is an art (look at the little winged angel he put there as a representation for conis who has wings)

(10) Sanji leaving a message for nami in water 7, even in the dire situation they were in (usopp left, robin was abducted, they were all accused of murder) sanji being his usual cute loser self

Fornite is very thin and tinny in its production but I love the lyrics about her wanting to murder people. Own it girl. lets be unhinged. Openly calling herself an alcoholic is cool too

Tortured Poets Department is somehow even MORE watered down and thin, you can barely hear Taylor's lyrics at points and the little sparkly elements at the end are so sad. Even Jack Antonoff is depressed now. The lyrics about Patti Smith and the Chelsea Hotel were fun, if only because i've been reading Smith's memoir. The sad desperation to convince the person she's addressing in this song (clearly Matt Healy) to round their relationship up to love or marriage is so pathetic and weak it is striking.

My Boy Only Breaks All His Favorite Toys could not be more generically a Taylor song, I can see why people thought it was AI. its more of a chippy midi file rough draft than The Great War, and that at least had great lyrics. This one is embarrassingly bad and visits nothing new. I like the line "Once I Fix Me, He's Gonna Miss Me." the open unhinged desperateness is the one interesting element of this record so far.

Down Bad blends the mundane with the fantastical in the most baffling way that makes it neither relatable nor moving. Matt Healy is an alien who abducted you?? youre gonna kill yourself bc he dumped you after two weeks??? sad beeping noises, some truly bad, piercing vocal lines. weird empty wooshing sounds that already overpopulated Midnights.

Down Bad. the entire premise of the song being compared to being abducted by aliens and when you're returned to earth being like "actually i liked it better up there take me back" as a metaphor for love feels very much like when you had a good relationship, something you expected to last forever, and it just gets taken from you. however, to spice things up - i think it works better applied to how eddie feels. the whole 'fuck it if i can't have him' is exactly how he feels as he's completely destroying himself in the aftermath. and just for fun, so you don't necessarily have to listen to the songs if you don't feel like it my love, i'm adding the specific lines from each song that i feel apply the most.

"how dare you think it's romantic, to leave me safe and stranded? 'cause fuck it, i was in love. so fuck you, if i can't have us."

^ it applies to both reader/sugar and eddie. first half feels very her, because he left her behind to not risk exposing her to a life that had begun to decay him. but second half feels very him cause... fuck it, ya know?

So Long, London. this one is about just being sad and mad about the end of a relationship, and that's where both eddie and sugar still are mentally. to build something so sacred up only to watch it be burned down by the other person. sugar is far angrier than eddie, though, since she's not really taken the time to work through how she feels with the end of it all.

I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can). it's a bit of a spoiler, and a bit of a reach, but i think it's a good perspective from the others looking in. the media, but also specifically corroded coffin. this really only applies to post break-up them story-wise, too. he's wrecked himself, destroyed all that he was, and sugar is the only one seeming capable of bringing him back to what he once was.

loml. i guess what i'm saying is basically every single song where taylor got very vulnerable and terribly sad about the end of an important/long relationship. this one speaks for itself quite a bit because of the theme of the guy saying "you're the love of my life" repeatedly, only to leave. which is exactly what eddie did, in the grand scheme of things. and taking it a step further? the small implications of a breakup and attempt at rekindling? yeah, yeah that's them alright, your honor.

The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived. this one i would mostly apply to all of sugar/reader's anger pre-reunion. that anger of a man who simply ghosts you. she didn't let herself feel the 'breakup' much, but she did go through some of the stages of grief - and she got stuck at anger.

this is getting a bit out of hand now, but when it comes to the double album bit, there's even more. i don't want to bore you to death so i'm just going to list those songs but. yeah. this album felt very maroon coded to me. the losing and the anger and the sadness and the clinging to what once was. should've expected it, in all fairness.

from THE ANTHOLOGY, i'd say that 'the black dog', 'chloe or sam or sophia or marcus', 'how did it end?', 'i look in people's windows', 'the prophecy', 'peter', and 'the manuscript' are the ones that fit best for maroon. some are a stretch, some it's solely based off of one line that i couldn't get over, and some i just simply think it's the vibes. a true matter of the illness that is "they're my blurbos so i'll apply whatever song i want to them".

i'm sure we'll see a few of these as chapter titles going forward, including the anthology ones, so that'll probably be when i dig in a little deeper about specific lyrics. or when i post ominous music posts.

This final attack involved a summoned weapon: a tall scythe with unique runes etched into the blade. Apparently, through a newly developed spell, getting slashed with the scythe as it’s glowing causes the victim to be “absorbed” by the Amalgamate, their essence reforming as a pumpkin connected with the roots of its Heart. Reportedly, these connections cause an increase in the Subject’s power.

With some noted resistance, the Handlers were able to extricate the victims, but due to extenuating circumstances, they could not be released. One of the children was found to not only be Hexalian, but was also exposed to infectious material and very likely contracted the Blackblood. All three were transferred to appropriate facilities for evaluation and containment.

Addendum: The Hexalian child, now referred to as Subject 090547, was transferred to Sector C Facility 4, and blood tests have confirmed that he is indeed infected. Recent tests and observations suggest that contact with the Amalgamate’s magic during his initial transformation has caused minor issues with his ability to shift in and out of his Blackblood form. His cooperation varies by day, but the Doctor sees potential in him.

The remaining two children—Students 1543 and 1544—were sent to Mountainlake Academy in Sector A. Blood tests have revealed some unique attributes within both of them, but staff have been careful about what questions they ask. The pair has been more or less inseparable, and some staff members have described them as ‘conspiring’. One of them actively refuses to speak English when staff are around, and neither have asked about their missing friend since their first week, when one of them referred to him as their brother. Remain vigilant.

IINCIDENT REPORT #S-I/(Selaluna)TS-1/02 EVENT 2B: BLACKBLOOD ATTACK EVENT 3A: CIVILIAN DISAPPEARANCE Current Status: UNRESOLVED [RESOLVED] Summary: {AMALGAMATE #2} abducted three dozen civilians during testing and has refused to release them.

During Experiment #1 in Selaluna—the Hearthlight Festival Maze—the Blackblood we were testing used a newly developed ability to spirit away more than 30 known civilians over the course of two nights without being caught or causing a disturbance. While this can be considered optimal performance and data, it was brought to our attention that these people were never released, even after the maze was deconstructed. The essence it receives from harvesting people is connected directly into the Amalgamate’s “Heart”—the pumpkin that it carries with it and plants to summon its cornfield—and provides exponential increases to its magical ability and capacity. A previous report suggests that this allows it to increase the size of its field, but during the experiment, it maintained the size assigned for testing even as people vanished. This was likely intentional to keep staff from growing suspicious, an idea further supported by Amalgamate apparently suppressing the appearance of the new growths representing its victims.

The day after the maze’s closing, undercover staff members reported hearing rumors of missing individuals and families all throughout Selaluna. Before the situation could be contained, authorities had already been alerted in both Selaluna and Ertonfield. A statement was prepared for potential press interaction, but suspicion appears to be minimal to none. Staff members in the area are advised to participate in search efforts to gather more information.

When the Amalgamate was confronted for its actions, it gave little response. It has been ignoring attempts to complete CAR surveys and refuses to speak with anyone aside from its handlers. Even then, handlers report that they are having an increasingly difficult time getting through to its host, and that she may now be a lost cause. The Amalgamate has been moved to another enclosure for rehabilitation and further study.

Should we find a way to extract the civilians from its “Heart”, it is advised that we return them to Selaluna’s outskirts, where they will hopefully awake without incident or fanfare. Previous reports suggest that coming out of the Amalgamate’s control is similar to waking from a very deep sleep, with whatever exists on the other side feeling like a dream, or perhaps a nightmare.

I honestly think they only put it this way to try and find a mythical middle ground.

They know people want sex work destigmatized, so they call them "underaged sex workers" like they would say "underaged slaughter house workers." Like, the fact that they are minors is the illegal part. Even though the sex work part is, too, in most places.

And they also might be worried that weird regressive Conservatives will complain that a trafficked child is someone (white) abducted by pedophiles, and shouldn't be the phrase for 16 yos who CLEARLY are just little sl*ts who want to make money. Because age of consent laws in the South and Midwest are ancient and gross, but lots of people out there think it is okay for middle schoolers to be marrying and having (white) babies.

I mean this all still gross and terrible, but I bet there is well-intentioned "both sides" math, here.

Now, Dallas couldn't claim to have any experience with aliens. He'd never seen any himself, though he had come across some people who had. Even if that weren't the case, he knew better than to think anything to do with aliens could be pleasant. After all, he'd seen the movies, hadn't he? Nothing good ever game of meeting extraterrestrial life in them!

Dallas had never been sure if he should believe that story or not. On one hand, he definitely believed that aliens were real. How could he not? And he could also picture the government taking advantage of their technology. Working with them, though? Nah, he couldn't see that. Besides, if that were the case, wouldn't he have seen hints of it when he was working for the President? Dallas had seen all sorts of dodgy meetings during that job, but never one he thought had anything to do with aliens.
