Mundane to Magical | Leveraging Transitions to Shift Into Writing Mode
In my day job, I work in SPED (Special Education). In being in this line of work, I've learned quite a lot. What I've learned especially is the power of transitions. Time to do classwork? There's a specific song. Time to go to snack/lunch/recess? There's a specific song. Time to go home? There's a specific song.
I focus on the songs because, even when my back is turned, as soon as I hear a specific song, I know exactly what to do, where we're going, where to position myself to better assist, etc.
How does this apply to writing?
Sometimes coming to sit down and write right after a long day, you find yourself fighting against your brain to do anything creative. Not being in the mood, as it were. The mental friction switching from work- work to creative work can be frustrating. But by leveraging certain transitions, you might find yourself being able to switch from work mode to creative mode much more quickly, efficiently and consistently.
If you haven't read "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg, I'll give you a brief crash course. Everything we do can be broken down into habits. Every habit has a cue, whether we think about it or not. Every performed habit has a reward, whether we think of it as a reward or not. The more the habit is executed, the harder it will be to change later.
For example, and I'm going to use a personal example here, I come to sit at my desk. [The cue] I pull out my phone to find my time tracking app. [The habit] I go on Xiaohongshu/YouTube/Tumblr/Pinterest for the time I meant to spend on writing. [The reward]
Now that I know my cue, what type of behavior it triggers, and what I seem to value as a reward, how can I change this to create a consistent writing habit instead? Here's what I'm working on.
Turning on time tracking app and leaving my phone in a drawer [The cue]. Sitting at my desk with a pen and notebook [The habit]. Writing with pen and notebook for whatever time allotted [The reward].
In my new routine, I'm removing my distractions and training my brain to associate writing as a reward knowing that by the end of a session I'll feel accomplished. While I do have an extra rewards list, I make sure the only items are things I can immediately afford. Going into debt isn't very rewarding. Or things that immediately make me feel good. Like a walk around the neighborhood, an extra cup of tea, an extra hour of video games.
Here's your homework. ⬇ (•ᴗ•)
Find a 1 min to 5 min activity to incorporate as a "transition ritual" to shift your focus from work-work to creative work. It can be something you already do [sit at your desk] or something new [lighting a candle]. From here on out, every time you meet that cue, perform a writing habit. [Write for 20 minutes, write 100 words, finish an chapter outline/character sheet/dialogue, etc.] After the habit is performed, reward yourself immediately. We're not Pavlov's dogs, okay? Just give us the damn treat. Repeat on a daily or scheduled basis.
By building, or re-building, your habits around writing, you are training yourself to associate these little activities with entering a creative state of mind. Which means giving yourself more time to write in the long run.

10 Non-Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing
New Part: 10 Lethal Injury Ideas
If you need a simple way to make your characters feel pain, here are some ideas: 
1. Sprained Ankle
A common injury that can severely limit mobility. This is useful because your characters will have to experience a mild struggle and adapt their plans to their new lack of mobiliy. Perfect to add tension to a chase scene.
2. Rib Contusion
A painful bruise on the ribs can make breathing difficult, helping you sneak in those ragged wheezes during a fight scene. Could also be used for something sport-related! It's impactful enough to leave a lingering pain but not enough to hinder their overall movement.
3. Concussions
This common brain injury can lead to confusion, dizziness, and mood swings, affecting a character’s judgment heavily. It can also cause mild amnesia.
I enjoy using concussions when you need another character to subtly take over the fight/scene, it's an easy way to switch POVs. You could also use it if you need a 'cute' recovery moment with A and B.
4. Fractured Finger
A broken finger can complicate tasks that require fine motor skills. This would be perfect for characters like artists, writers, etc. Or, a fighter who brushes it off as nothing till they try to throw a punch and are hit with pain.
5. Road Rash
Road rash is an abrasion caused by friction. Aka scraping skin. The raw, painful sting resulting from a fall can be a quick but effective way to add pain to your writing. Tip: it's great if you need a mild injury for a child.
6. Shoulder Dislocation
This injury can be excruciating and often leads to an inability to use one arm, forcing characters to confront their limitations while adding urgency to their situation. Good for torture scenes.
7. Deep Laceration
A deep laceration is a cut that requires stitches. As someone who got stitches as a kid, they really aren't that bad! A 2-3 inch wound (in length) provides just enough pain and blood to add that dramatic flair to your writing while not severely deterring your character.
This is also a great wound to look back on since it often scars. Note: the deeper and wider the cut the worse your character's condition. Don't give them a 5 inch deep gash and call that mild.
8. Burns
Whether from fire, chemicals, or hot surfaces, burns can cause intense suffering and lingering trauma. Like the previous injury, the lasting physical and emotional trauma of a burn is a great wound for characters to look back on.

9. Pulled Muscle
This can create ongoing pain and restrict movement, offering a window to force your character to lean on another. Note: I personally use muscle related injuries when I want to focus more on the pain and sprains to focus on a lack of mobility.
10. Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon can cause chronic pain and limit a character's ability to perform tasks they usually take for granted. When exploring tendonitis make sure you research well as this can easily turn into a more severe injury.
This is a quick, brief list of ideas to provide writers inspiration. Since it is a shorter blog, I have not covered the injuries in detail. This is inspiration, not a thorough guide. Happy writing! :)

(How your character defends their soft core and what could shatter it) Because protection becomes prison real fast.

Small fantasy worldbuilding elements you might want to think about:
A currency that isn’t gold-standard/having gold be as valuable as tin
A currency that runs entirely on a perishable resource, like cocoa beans
A clock that isn’t 24-hours
More or less than four seasons/seasons other than the ones we know
Fantastical weather patterns like irregular cloud formations, iridescent rain
Multiple moons/no moon
Planetary rings
A northern lights effect, but near the equator
Roads that aren’t brown or grey/black, like San Juan’s blue bricks
Jewelry beyond precious gems and metals
Marriage signifiers other than wedding bands
The husband taking the wife's name / newlyweds inventing a new surname upon marriage
No concept of virginity or bastardry
More than 2 genders/no concept of gender
Monotheism, but not creationism
Gods that don’t look like people
Domesticated pets that aren’t re-skinned dogs and cats
Some normalized supernatural element that has nothing to do with the plot
Magical communication that isn’t Fantasy Zoom

I’ve done about half of these myself in one WIP or another and a little detail here or there goes a long way in reminding the audience that this isn’t Kansas anymore.

I've already said that my number one piece of writing advice is to read.
But my number two piece of advice is this: be deliberate.
Honestly this would fix so many pieces of bad writing advice. Don't forbid people from doing something, tell them to be conscious and deliberate about it. This could help stop people from falling into common mistakes without limiting their creativity. Black and white imperatives may stop a few annoying beginner habits, but ultimately they will restrict artistic expression.
Instead of "don't use epithets": "Know the effect epithets have and be deliberate about using them." Because yes, beginners often misuse them, but they can be useful when a character's name isn't known or when you want to reduce them to a particular trait they have.
Instead of "don't use 'said'" or "just use 'said'": "Be deliberate about your use of dialogue tags." Because sometimes you'll want "said" which fades into the background nicely, but sometimes you will need a more descriptive alternative to convey what a character is doing.
Instead of "don't use passive voice": "Be deliberate about when you use passive voice." Because using it when it's not needed can detract from your writing, but sometimes it can be useful to change the emphasis of a sentence or to portray a particular state of mind.
Instead of blindly following or ignorantly neglecting the rules of writing, familiarize yourself with them and their consequences so you can choose when and if breaking them would serve what you're trying to get across.
Your writing is yours. Take control of it.
It probably sounds like I'm preaching to the choir here because most of my mutuals are already great writers. But I'm hoping this will make it to the right people.

Same Shit, Different Day (・―・) | Identify and Address Avoidance Behaviors Through "Why's"
The longest running joke about writing is how writer's often avoid it like the plague. The joke's on me, too.
A word of warning if you continue reading, things are about to get serious.
I've touched on the topic of writer's block in previous posts. I've even made a flow chart to make it easier to find out which type of writer's block a fellow writer might be facing. Still, I suppose it doesn't hurt to break things down a bit further.
Down to its essence, writer's block is a type of avoidance behavior. Avoidance behavior can come from a number of things. Usually though, it's how you'd probably imagined it. Something is painful, you avoid it. Something is scary, you avoid it. Something is uncomfortable, you avoid it. It's not your fault, it's how we're wired as human beings. It's how we've survived.
Writer's block comes from these same feelings. It's painful, scary and uncomfortable. On top of that, our minds have thoughts of their own. Deeply- rooted insecurities (fear of failure, perfectionism, imposter syndrome) lead many writers down the path of procrastination. And, no, procrastination is not created equal imo.
You've got the positive kind- overplanning, nitpicking, doing chores.
The neutral kind- doom scrolling, reading, gaming, going out.
Then the destructive kind- anything that has to do with self- harm and/or harming others.
Yes, this post is definitely an oversimplification of avoidance behavior. However, what I'm trying to get through to those avoiding their writing projects at this very moment is that writing shouldn't be something to be feared if it's something you genuinely want to do.
Here's your homework. ⬇
Keep asking yourself "why" to uncover the root-cause of your avoidance to writing and/or finishing your current project.
For example:
"Why am I not writing?"
I don't have time.
"Why don't I have time?
I'm always doing chores.
"Why am I prioritizing chores over writing?"
Chores feel more urgent.
"Why do they feel urgent?"
Because writing is scary.
"Why does writing feel scary?"
I'm afraid it won't turn out good.
Now we have an answer. The Fear of Imperfection is what's actually causing the avoidance of your writing. Look, I know some of my posts come off strong, or silly, but if the reason why you don't write is because you think no one believes that you can.
I do.
I believe in your hard work.
I believe that you have the ability to get that book out of your head and into the hands of happy readers.
Yes, you can.

100 Dialogue Tags You Can Use Instead of “Said”
For the writers struggling to rid themselves of the classic ‘said’. Some are repeated in different categories since they fit multiple ones (but those are counted once so it adds up to 100 new words). 
1. Neutral Tags 
Straightforward and unobtrusive dialogue tags: 
Added, Replied, Stated, Remarked, Responded, Observed, Acknowledged, Commented, Noted, Voiced, Expressed, Shared, Answered, Mentioned, Declared.
2. Questioning Tags 
Curious, interrogative dialogue tags:
Asked, Queried, Wondered, Probed, Inquired, Requested, Pondered, Demanded, Challenged, Interjected, Investigated, Countered, Snapped, Pleaded, Insisted.
3. Emotive Tags 
Emotional dialogue tags:

Note: everyone is entitled to their own opinion. No I am NOT telling people to abandon said and use these. Yes I understand that said is often good enough, but sometimes you WANT to draw attention to how the character is speaking. If you think adding an action/movement to your dialogue is 'good enough' hate to break it to you but that ruins immersion much more than a casual 'mumbled'. And for the last time: this is just a resource list, CALM DOWN. Hope that covers all the annoyingly redundant replies :)

When a Character Is Grieving Someone They Never Got to Say Goodbye To
✧ They talk about the person in past tense… then correct themselves. Then stop talking entirely.
✧ They touch things that belonged to the person like they’re fragile, sacred, about to disappear.
✧ They hoard the last voicemail, last message, last anything. Play it. Don’t play it. Just knowing it exists hurts enough.
✧ They leave something untouched, an empty seat, a half-packed bag, a coffee order that isn’t theirs.
✧ They get irrationally angry when someone else seems to be “moving on.” As if forgetting is betrayal.
✧ They don’t let themselves cry all at once. It comes in pieces. Like they’re afraid too much grief will drown them.
✧ They over-apologize. For being quiet. For being distant. For not being okay.
✧ They become hyper-aware of time, dates, anniversaries, time zones, the exact moment everything ended.
✧ They get superstitious. Ritualistic. As if doing things "right" might reverse something.
✧ They smile when they talk about the person. But it’s brittle. And it never quite touches their eyes.

Zoom In, Don’t Glaze Over: How to Describe Appearance Without Losing the Plot
You’ve met her before. The girl with “flowing ebony hair,” “emerald eyes,” and “lips like rose petals.” Or him, with “chiseled jawlines,” “stormy gray eyes,” and “shoulders like a Greek statue.”
We don’t know them.
We’ve just met their tropes.
Describing physical appearance is one of the trickiest — and most overdone — parts of character writing. It’s tempting to reach for shorthand: hair color, eye color, maybe a quick body scan. But if we want a reader to see someone — to feel the charge in the air when they enter a room — we need to stop writing mannequins and start writing people.
So let’s get granular. Here’s how to write physical appearance in a way that’s textured, meaningful, and deeply character-driven.
1. Hair: It’s About Story, Texture, and Care
Hair says a lot — not just about genetics, but about choices. Does your character tame it? Let it run wild? Is it dyed, greying, braided, buzzed, or piled on top of her head in a hurry?
Good hair description considers:
Texture (fine, coiled, wiry, limp, soft)
Context (windblown, sweat-damp, scorched by bleach)
Emotion (does she twist it when nervous? Is he ashamed of losing it?)
Flat: “Her long brown hair framed her face.”
Better: “Her ponytail was too tight, the kind that whispered of control issues and caffeine-fueled 4 a.m. library shifts.”
You don’t need to romanticise it. You need to make it feel real.
2. Eyes: Less Color, More Connection
We get it: her eyes are violet. Cool. But that doesn’t tell us much.
Instead of focusing solely on eye color, think about:
What the eyes do (do they dart, linger, harden?)
What others feel under them (seen, judged, safe?)
The surrounding features (dark circles, crow’s feet, smudged mascara)
Flat: “His piercing blue eyes locked on hers.”
Better: “His gaze was the kind that looked through you — like it had already weighed your worth and moved on.”
You’re not describing a passport photo. You’re describing what it feels like to be seen by them.
3. Facial Features: Use Contrast and Texture
Faces are not symmetrical ovals with random features. They’re full of tension, softness, age, emotion, and life.
Things to look for:
Asymmetry and character (a crooked nose, a scar)
Expression patterns (smiling without the eyes, habitual frowns)
Evidence of lifestyle (laugh lines, sun spots, stress acne)
Flat: “She had a delicate face.”
Better: “There was something unfinished about her face — as if her cheekbones hadn’t quite agreed on where to settle, and her mouth always seemed on the verge of disagreement.”
Let the face be a map of experience.
4. Bodies: Movement > Measurement
Forget dress sizes and six packs. Think about how bodies occupy space. How do they move? What are they hiding or showing? How do they wear their clothes — or how do the clothes wear them?
Ask:
What do others notice first? (a presence, a posture, a sound?)
How does their body express emotion? (do they go rigid, fold inwards, puff up?)
Flat: “He was tall and muscular.”
Better: “He had the kind of height that made ceilings nervous — but he moved like he was trying not to take up too much space.”
Describing someone’s body isn’t about cataloguing. It’s about showing how they exist in the world.
5. Let Emotion Tint the Lens
Who’s doing the describing? A lover? An enemy? A tired narrator? The emotional lens will shape what’s noticed and how it’s described.
In love: The chipped tooth becomes charming.
In rivalry: The smirk becomes smug.
In mourning: The face becomes blurred with memory.
Same person. Different lens. Different description.
6. Specificity is Your Superpower
Generic description = generic character. One well-chosen detail creates intimacy. Let us feel the scratch of their scarf, the clink of her earrings, the smudge of ink on their fingertips.
Examples:
“He had a habit of adjusting his collar when he lied — always clockwise, always twice.”
“Her nail polish was always chipped, but never accidentally.”
Make the reader feel like they’re the only one close enough to notice.
Describing appearance isn’t just about what your character looks like. It’s about what their appearance says — about how they move through the world, how others see them, and how they see themselves.
Zoom in on the details that matter. Skip the clichés. Let each description carry weight, story, and emotion. Because you’re not building paper dolls. You’re building people.
