re: neopets, Have you reviewed the royal styles? not the ones who had pre-conversion poses, but new ones like Bori and Ogrin

(Similar to the Darigan style review I did a while back, this review will only cover the "regal" styles and will only focus on the pets I think got the biggest glow-ups, rather than my favorite designs overall.)

Royal pets suffered pretty badly from customization—while being able to remove the clothes and do cross-paints is nice, a big draw of royal pets used to be that they were anthro and usually had very strong, fun personalities. Many designs just didn't translate to quadrupeds very well, and the resulting designs were very bland overall. Basically, what I'm saying is that this colour definitely needed these styles.

As for the styles themselves, they're pretty good! I like the poses and a lot of them are very expressive. The only real drawback is that the art quality on them isn't very consistent with the old pre-existing artwork, or sometimes old Neopets art in general—some have subtle gradients, some have way too much detail in their designs, and some have too many layers of finicky shading on them. However, most people probably won't notice this, and they still look good overall.

Favorite Style Glow-Ups:

Koi: I already liked the royal Koi's design, but their pet styles look particularly good. The art feels very on-point with the classic Neopets style, and the dynamic poses have a really nice sense of movement (and have the bonus of not having weird hand-fins). I particularly like how the royal girl and royal boy styles are swimming around each other, with the royal girl swimming down and the royal boy swimming up.

Xweetok: The original royal Xweetok designs are just okay at best, and frankly I don't think the style improved them much in that regard. However, they do give them an absolutely delightful personality, with the royal girl sporting a "oh-aren't-you-a-sweet-little-peasant" kind of look and the royal boy doing a pretentious bow. The outfits also look much better due to things like the royal boy's necklace actually being visible.

My only issue (outside of the tails being too long and thin) is that I wish they had adjusted the designs to feel more like old artwork, i.e., simplifying the overly-complex patterns and getting rid of the gradients. They've done those type of changes on other styles, so it's not like there wasn't pretense for it. Still, these look pretty good.

Gnorbu: The Gnorbu's are similar to the royal Xweetoks, in that the designs didn't change that much, but they read much, much better when on anthro pets (for example, being able to see the neck and chest areas that are normally hidden by their manes). They also fix some issues like the crown clipping into the royal boy's ear. Beyond that, however, I really like the haughty expressions and the anatomy, which is both appropriately stocky and works well with the designs (like the female's mane leading perfectly into her chest). Once again, the patterns and shading could've been simplified, but that's not a huge deal.

BONUS: The royal Ogrin styles are going here as a bonus because they blatantly copy/paste many elements from the converted versions, like the royal girl's tail or royal boy's necklace (and yes, they're VERY complex, but see the notes on just simplifying the designs above). However, the poses are very fun, and the trainwreck clothing at least reads a bit better when the pets are anthro. The artist also did a much better job of rendering clothing folds than whoever did the original designs did.

Being a children's librarian is very quickly turning me into, not a luddite, exactly, but someone who is only becoming increasingly wary and edgy about technology's impact on kids' brains. And I know--I KNOW--every time there's a new technology, there's always a moral panic about The Youths™, and concordantly a new way to guilt parents who are doing what they can in the absolutely-unsustainable-for-parenthood environment that is capitalism, I fucking get it. But still, I'm starting to feel like a bartender when I hand these kids computer passes, and I try to tell myself it's because "Maybe they don't have access to a computer in this capacity at home" but there's something about the way they sprint in, the way they don't even use a complete sentence to breathlessly ask for a computer pass, and the little gleam of desperation in their eyes or the way they reach over the desk for the computer pass without even saying anything or making eye contact that fills me with this full body reflex of, "I don't think what I'm about to give to you is good for you." Like, yes, a lot of them are in the age bracket I was when I was obsessed with Neopets, but also, a lot of them are younger than that. And this is the part of me that really sounds like an anti-technology, parent-shaming, kids-these-days fuddy duddy, but like... kids need to be outside, experiencing the world on a tactile level at a lot of these ages. So many of these kids need to be looking under rocks and logs, need to be waving sticks around, need to be rolling around in the dirt like they're Viggo Mortensen on the set of The Two Towers. There's such an obvious hunger for that kind of outlet for physical energy but instead we're parking them in front of computers and turning them into those serotonin button rats.

How 2 win a fest skin contest on dragon neopets

Hi! So I've seen some discussion on fest skin contests, mostly about how some people just keep winning. I'm not here to discuss about whether anything should be done about that, or whether that's unfair. I'm here to share some tips for people who struggle to get any fest win or honorable mention in.

Some background info: I've won a decent amount of contests so far. I don't win nearly every single time I enter a contest, but I do at least manage to land an honorable mention most of the time at this point. So take this post with a grain of salt, I'm not perfect, nor the best, just here to share what I've noticed from my festival winners as well as others.

So here we go!

Tip 1: Stay in theme

A lot of entries I see don't quite fit the idea of the flight that staff is looking for. Stick with the flight's general theme. For light that tends to be the color yellow, orbs and ancient Greece inspired ruins.

Some flights have very broad themes. Like water ranging from deep sea horrors to sandy shores, or nature both having a feral, wild aesthetic as well as a tropical, flowery one. But other flights, like wind and light, have a more narrow theme.

I've talked with some other skin artists about specific contest entries in the past, that we really wished would win, but doubted they ever would. Not because the art wasn't interesting, but because they fell outside the general themes we see in that flight. Sometimes we're surprised, and they win anyways, though!

Tip 2: study the masters

We're in our 12th festival cycle, which means there's 11 previous years to look through. This is a really valuable resource. Go through the previous years, especially the more recent ones, and take a look at what the previous winning entries were. You'll probably spot some common themes for each flight, as well as specific elements that reoccur in each fest again and again.

Whenever I sit down to make a contest entry, I look at the previous few years. Both to gather inspiration but also to study them. I don't just look at these skins, I pick apart their art style, the composition, the themes that they've used. And then I go ahead and bring my own spin on it.

Tip 3: Make it yours

Okay, yes, I know I just spent a while talking about staying on theme and referencing existing winners, but hear me out. Most of the winning entries I see (as well as most of my own fest winners) manage to walk the tight line between staying on theme as well as adding their own creative twist to it.

This is the part where I'm going to share some of my own examples, since I think some of mine show what I mean pretty well.

Solarium (brightshine 2019) | Starwood Monarch (starfall 2022) | C.A.C.T.U.S. (thundercrack 2022)

These ones still stay relatively in theme, but they also incorporate some of my own twists in it. Solarium's idea was a window to the sky, surrounded by gilded sundial-esque elements. Starwood Monarch is a pink arcane crystal butterfly. And C.A.C.T.U.S. is... well, cybernetic cacti tied into the dragon with some thunder clouds.

None of these are a carbon copy of the flight's themes, but instead incorporate the flight's themes into another concept altogether. Sundial sky, arcane butterfly, robot cacti.

And you can go pretty wild with this in some scenarios.

Fast as the Wind (mistral 2022) | Sunlit Streams (brightshine 2024)

Both of these incorporate something you really wouldn't expect from its flight. Cheetahs and koi fish respectively. I'm actually really surprised Sunlit Streams won since I felt it strayed too far away from light's general theming.

Fun fact, for C.A.C.T.U.S. and fast as the wind I actually came up with the name first, then based a skin around that name. I don't always do it but it's nice to get a cohesive package.

Tip 4: Keep it readable

A common thing I see in festival winners are that it's really easy to tell what they depict at an immediate first glance. A lot of entries that otherwise would be really good candidates fall victim to one of the following pitfalls.

They don't tint the lines and shadows

They don't have any line art separating objects from the dragon

They use a very soft brush for things that should appear more solid

Number 3 I see a lot with artists who are rather novel at (digital) art in general. This isn't a bad thing, but it does make the overall picture blurred and difficult to read.

For number 2, the fix is mostly to add clearer separation between the dragon and the object. The dragon base is a gray, but lighter and darker dragons exist. Having no (or very unnoticeable) lineart will make any very light color blend in with lighter dragons!

As for number 1... please tint your lines and shadows. Often they can be a noticeable deal lighter than what the default PSD has them as. Set your lines to multiply also, to make life less hard on yourself.

This means your art doesn't have to be perfect to win. My first two festival winners make me die inside every time I look at them.

Twilight Oracle (brightshine 2016) | Cinderleaves (flameforgers 2016)

I could list a bunch of reasons as to why I think these aren't too great, the shading being just one of them. But hey, they still won. And that's likely because they still follow these four principles at their core.

Bonus tip: have fun!

It's real cliche to throw this one in, but I mean it. If you're solely making fest entries to win, then not making it into the selection feels incredibly awful. It's art after all, draw what you love to draw. This is just my two cents on how to improve your chances at winning a contest.

Been thinking about concepts for a Deep Space visit for this AU. I figure it's worth starting from zero on the Disney stuff and only re-adding the canon visits as relevant, that way I can cater each world to the vastly different state of the universe.

I didn't want this to be so long but I have ADHD. Audio version coming soon for those who don't like big blocks of text.

I think a lot of cool stuff could happen there. I had a thought of a replica version of Vexen being a minor antagonist, as Vexen was the replica guy and I feel like it'd be funny if he had a replica of himself made as a contingency, and his silhouette fight has him create Anti Sora clones which felt too perfect not to use. He can also be what gets Roxas and Axel re-involved as a character adjacent to the Organization that Roxas would likely run into and one that the Organization would absolutely want dealt with.

To make a very long story short (I wrote this and then wrote the rest of this post, ADHD strikes again) for the Deep Space visit at least as it exists in my brain right this second, Sora would arrive in Deep Space in Jumba's lab, lured by Vexen. Without access to Castle Oblivion, replica Vexen needs to find other ways to be A ScIeNtIsT, yEs, which brings him to Jumba and L&S deep cut Hamsterviel. If you know the rat I'm talking about, this is about to become Leroy and Stitch really fast.

Hamsterviel becomes convinced that Sora is a superior candidate for his little clone scheme over Stitch, so Sora is captured during the first visit - without a Keyblade, he can't just Get Out. Since Sora is at a dead end, the perspective can switch to Roxas for some story and light filler while Sora's zapped like a Neopet.

Roxas would eventually find himself in Deep Space (for reasons to be determined, likely related to Vexen replica), where after fighting through some Heartless he discovers a lonely Sora who fights by his side for a while - though Roxas would be wary out the gate because by this point he's pretty certain Sora wants him dead. Unlike other team fights with Sora and Roxas, you don't get a RC to switch who you're playing as in these fights.

Once you gets deep enough, you're surrounded by Nobodies rather than Heartless. Sora then betrays Roxas right before the fight starts, and you play a solo Roxas vs "Sora" and a bunch of Dusks. After being defeated, "Sora" runs off deeper into the level.

Soon later, Roxas runs into Donald and Goofy, who are alongside Sora. The two idiots can barely get a word in before Sora immediately jumps Roxas. This becomes a Roxas-controlled fight against "Sora", Donald and Goofy - though Sora can friendly fire and you only need to kill Sora to win the fight.

After being defeated, Sora runs behind Donald and Goofy and pushes them forward, using them as cover - which even Roxas notices is uncharacteristic of him even as a Heartless. Donald and Goofy are also beat, and a bit confused, but they reluctantly try to defend Sora and stand their ground against Roxas, Goofy putting up fisticuffs and Donald trying to cast.

Rather than keep beating on them, Roxas (who is still pretty early in the story so at this point has not formally met Sora yet) asks them if that's what Sora's really like - if he would really throw his friends under the bus like that. Dumb and dumber are initially offended, at the suggestion that Sora would do such a thing, and then they pause for a long moment, using their brains real hard as "Sora" tries to creep away behind them. Roxas holds his Keyblade out to stop him, and tells Donald and Goofy that he fought this "Sora" earlier - alongside a bunch of Nobodies.

Found out, the Sora clone calls in a swarm of lesser Sora clones and disappears into the crowd. These lesser clones serve as stronger regular enemies for the rest of the level, same tier as the high-rank Nobodies. Donald and Goofy tell Roxas about what happened when they came in, and as conflicted as Roxas is about Sora, he knows that whatever Vexen wants to do with him is worse, so tentatively he joins Donald and Goofy (they become party members) given the same goal of rescuing Sora.

Eventually you get to the center of the lab, where a deep-fried real Sora is still being held captive and has to be rescued. Probably some villain monologue shit happens here, maybe some stuff about Hamsterviel, Jumba and Vexen - I don't have a lot of the villain stuff in this visit sorted out yet. But it ends in a fight against a juiced up Sora replica alongside lesser replica adds, with Donald and Goofy at your side. (Perhaps the replica wasn't fully complete, and by the time Roxas and co finally get to the lab, they've gotten the rest of Sora's data so the boss is more threatening than before?)

One last tidbit. In Leroy and Stitch, the Leroy clones have a built in killswitch where they shut down when they hear the song Aloha Oe. It's goofy and stupid and I want to keep it. Perhaps Jumba, still being in his evil phase in KH, was just extremely insulted that Hamsterviel would choose Sora as the superior specimen over the beautiful masterpiece of evil that is Experiment 626. So he flicks on the radio and lets whatever song is playing be this experiment's weakness. That song, of course, NEEDING to be Simple and Clean right, like, that would be hilarious? I'm a fake fan because I fucking HATE that song so much, but that makes it all the funnier to have it be what finishes off the replicas lmao.

Neopets/Skyrim Tarot: I. The Magician

The first mage that our Fool comes across in their journey is typically the Magician themself. In these two decks, our Magicians are Seradar and Farengar Secret-Fire.

Now, you may be asking, "Who's this bitch?" And this would be your right as a person. Seradar is a Gelert hailing from Brightvale. His claim to fame is being the court sorcerer for King Hagan and showing up in the Neopets: The Darkest Faerie video game...in which he immediately succumbed to the Darkest Faerie's influence when she attacked Faerieland. He trained Roberta, the niece of King Skarl and King Hagan (though we don't actually know who her parents are), in sorcery. Seradar is also a member of the Order of the Red Erisim, one of the factions involved in the War for the Obelisk back in 2013.

Considering the number of other characters that wound up on other cards, I'm not surprised that Seradar is the Magician. I mean, he literally is a court mage. According to the guidebook, he is embodying the Wands suit through his own body, while the Neopoints are the Coins, he's got some Cups, and you can see the blade of a Sword. His ceremonial robe is green for his connection to the earth, while the gold is there to represent alchemical transformation. He is drawing magic in and using it to create at the same time.

Honestly, they popped off with this card's design. I want his wizard tower. No notes, this is a Magician who doesn't hesitate to use that magic.

And then there's...Farengar Secret-Fire? The court wizard of Whiterun? The one that you can literally kill during the Mephala quest to get the key and the main quest will just change, they'll just talk to/about him as though he was still alive? Farengar the Nord elemental mage? Yep, this is him.

I can see why he was chosen for the Magician if you think of a Skyrim-specific tarot deck. If you follow the main quest first and foremost, Farengar is the first wizard you will meet and is most likely responsible for you even finding out that the College of Winterhold exists in this place called Winterhold. As he says himself when asked if he's the only wizard in Whiterun, "I believe I am, yes. Technically speaking, of course. The city is also home to a priest, priestess, an alchemist, and I'm sure others who practice."

In the card, he is depicted as holding a fairly standard-looking Destruction staff and being surrounded by Daedric runes. Destruction makes sense for his staff choice - he's a spells merchant, and he sells a complete set of Adept Destruction tomes if your Destruction skill level is 40 or higher. He has an arcane enchanter and an alchemy station in his weird little wizard cave off the main hall of Dragonsreach. His primary skills are Destruction and Restoration, his secondary skills are Alteration and Conjuration, and...he's capped at level 10. Yeah, he doesn't match the PC's level or scale against them or anything like that. It's why it's so easy to kill him during the Whispering Door quest, considering the minimum level to get that quest to begin with is 20. He comes across as more of a scholar than a mage once you get to the point where your character is of a comparable level to him. He's got plenty of books in his little area and knows enough to keep Jarl Balgruuf the Greater updated on things - particularly on studying the dragons popping up - but he's not much of a mage.

Overall, I'm not mad at this choice...but I also wouldn't call Farengar Secret-Fire a master of "many magical arts". There's just no way that he could be. The UESP lists just one (1) spell in his arsenal and it's Firebolt, an Apprentice level Destruction spell (Apprentice is the second level of spells, it goes Novice -> Apprentice -> Adept -> Expert -> Master).

(You could also make the argument that the in-game stuff doesn't accurately reflect the lore, but this is The Elder Scrolls series, we're already bringing that into consideration.)

It is very funny to me that both of the Magicians are depicting characters who are hilariously mid at best.

I was at a convention today and at one of the booths they were selling neopets merch like tarot cards and shit and while I played neopets WELL into my adulthood (on and off) I have not for a couple years and was not aware that there is Officially Licensed Tarot cards

BUT

believe me I probably have neomillions bangin around the stock market and used to have a neopets tumblr a couple years ago ok so I half know my shit

Anyway so I go up to the booth and squee over the merch I never thought I'd find at an Anime Convention of all places and the lady's first question to me was "oh so you still play neopets?"

and I look at her. mind you I am autistic. I look this woman. in the eye. okay? I'm looking her in the eye

and I can see that she is so excited to find a real actual neopets fan

so I say

yes

which was a lie

and look away immediately and I uh and I buy the cards and some pins

and as she runs my debit card through the thing she's like "oh you know if you let us know - just send us an email - we'll send you like in-game items and they sell for lots of neopoints"

so now I am obliged by gods neopian to return to the fold but also... to send an email now

like you know they never sell that shit

it was in the corner of their booth like they were like "oh I guess we have extra space"

but now in my head this lady is awaiting ye olde poste at ye olde tower window express from the First Real and True Actual In-Person Fan of Neopets She Has Ever Had the Pleasure to Meet: A Fan So Noble and True That Still Plays Neopets To This Day

so I have to write an email now and play a game it seems

Taking a break from art so here's the last for 2024!

Annotations for each month below the cut.

January Bruce, but PORPLE. It's probably in my top three of the year. The reference was extremely helpful, and I feel like this wouldn't have come out as good without it. However, I do adore what I added. It must have been a birthday gift to myself this year.

February The first drawing of these two together! I love these Ixi's with all my heart, probably my favourite Neopet-ocs by far.

March Raleigh as a wooden puppet! The texturing was fun, and the shading was surprisingly less frustrating than I expected, love how unnatural his pose looks. Another contender for the top 5 of the year.

April My Love Bee (nicknamed Beefy) as a sea monster, this was an absolute joy to draw, I am pretty damn happy with it and I feel like it let me get to know my own OC better. another top 5'er

May and we're not done here, the third month in a row to top 5 in it! Shihosu, who's probably also a top 5 OC of mine, as a pirate? it works so damn well for her?? why didn't I think of having her be pirate-y before this? I can't get over it. ( also yes 4 of the 5 being in the first half of the month is a bad sign for my output and mental health for the rest of the year.)

June was a happy little piece I made to feel better and it worked, love these goobers and I would do anything to protect them.

July was artfight and finally an excuse to draw Angel! Who belongs to @sug01s3al. Angel was a joy to draw, even if it was a lot of work, it felt worth it. (Their recent Death Twink design for Angel has me doing eye emojis every time I see it.)

Also this is the final entry to the top 5 for this year, not sure where anything would sit tbh, but they're all competing.

August was a redraw which I, now, typically try to avoid putting in top lists like this, but I loved this piece and I sweated over it working my ass off to make it nice, I'm giving myself this one.

September was the tooth faerie from Neopets! one of my favourite Neopets characters. worked hard on this and enjoyed it, but it was also during a wrist injury that month so, I think this isn't half bad tbh!

October marked the start of my pieces for the Neotober prompt list made by fall-of-a-girl and I believe this was the first animated piece I did for this! I'm so grateful to @Fall-of-a-girl bc somehow their prompt list inspired me to do a few animations after months of doing basically none.

November was this sweet little illustration of Sophie, I just really love this one.

And Finally,

December was one of my last pieces for Neotober, Ebony and Seshora return to this list, being just as cute. I LOVE THEM!
