my hot take of the year is that: they should have kept masoj and alton alive for the sake of hilarity purpose. imagine two city boys chasing after THE drizzt do'urden, and everytime they're so close to meeting him, they always get themselves into unnecessary hijinks. instead of building reputation as scary drows, they ended up being seen as friendly because for some fucking reason they always solve everyone problem by accidents. political turmoil within the myconid colony? solved by decromacy. a brewing civil war in a small village? solved by dancing around the campfire. the surface village in need of new leadership? these two idiot volunteer themselves as mayor. you get the vibe.

shoutout to masoj hun’ett the most 25 year old ever
i have wanted to draw these two since i started the drizzt series they were the og unhinged terrible men duo.....masoj ‘leans on broom to watch assassination’ hunett’ and alton ‘i have beef with drizzt despite him being a baby when his family killed mine’ devir.
masoj greatest hits include: leaning on broom. killing the faceless one and almost alton. having his eyebrows burned off by alton. being 25. his cat liking drizzt better than him. conveniently ‘forgetting’ to mention to alton that the faceless one was his brother. being so insufferable that drizzt made an exception for him with his ‘i dont kill drow’ code. u will be missed king.

Gotta love how Drizzt remembers none of his self-proclaimed "arch-enemies"
Alton Devir: At last I shall have revenge!
Drizzt: I thought this was a science class???
***
Roddy McGristle: Gotcha, drow!
Drizzt: ...have you been STALKING me for the last seven years?! Why?!?!
***
Errtu: Your worst enemy is coming for you!!!
Drizzt: Can I get a hint?
Errtu: *gives long and complex riddle*
Drizzt: ...Can I get a different hint?
***
Le'lorinel: VENGEANCE UPON YOU, DRIZZT DO'URDEN!!!
Drizzt: I have literally never met you in my life.

I keep meaning to do a Lavender Orbs (and various synonyms) count for the Drizzt novels and bc they're on a tablet I suppose I could search but I keep forgetting but I do intend to keep a running tab of Silliest Name So Far
anyway I think for book 1 it's SiNaFay Hun'ett simply because NO one else has random capitalization without corresponding apostrophes, what the fuck is up with that, and for book 2 it is of course King Schnicktick, and I expect him not to be dethroned until the appearance of Thibbledorf Pwent. Mooshie's real name is only slightly silly and that is mostly because, like Alton DeVir, he is inexplicably sort of French.

I'll look it up maybe cos it's plaguing my brain but how is house DeVir even a thing in Baldur's Gate (unless it takes place before they were all killed in the LoD which I mean in BG3 the game takes place way after that had happened in LoD (right??)) if Viconia exists in Baldur's Gate 2 & 3. Cos Alton was the only surviving member of house DeVir before he was killed in that fight w Drizzt in book 1.

FINALLY managed to finish the first Drizzt Do'Urden novel. Jesus christ this book was a chore. Most of my problems came from the terrible job the German translator did (the edition I got from my library is from 1992), where she'd often (mis-)translate the English idioms directly, causing the text to make absolutely no fucking sense. A few times I had no fucking idea what the characters were talking about, even if I tried to directly translate the sentence into English.
The other problem I had was the pacing. This book is 219 pages of pure setup. It only somewhat got interesting during Act 3, literally the last 40 pages, and then just... ends. I know there's more to Drizzt's story once he finally leaves the Underdark (the thing I'm actually interested in), but since the plot with Alton DeVir hasn't been resolved yet I assume that's the plot for book 2 before Drizzt finally leaves.

I really love Alton DeVir, because something about him just feels so absolutely classic fantasy to me...
Like, this absolutely pathetic, unhinged man, constantly shunted from one humiliation to the next, constantly denied not only vengeance but acknowledgment, lacking agency and decency, seems like he's being constantly built up as a bubbling threat that never comes to fruition because he's just too pathetic to have ever even registered as a threat to Mr. The Mary Sue (affectionate).
They just don't make em like this anymore, I tellyas.
...oh god, has it happened? Have I finally adopted my own poor little meow meow forgotten background character?

they're so cruel for giving us masoj, alton, and sinafay in homeland only to take it away by the end of the book and exile. they're so good, i genuinely thought they would be recurring side characters in the series.
