“oh jason was the happy robin” this “oh he wasn’t at all angsty like people think” that well if you bitches want to have your canonical happy robin you better accept that you’re getting natural-redhead-dyes-his-hair-black-exact-copy-of-dick’s-backstory jason too. can’t have one without the other

I’ve been deconstructing my ideas of Tim to separate fanon from canon for the purpose of my solo run idea. What do you mean Batman calling him Jason was a canon event. I understand fanon has a basis in canon but I thought that was a development of fanon maybe. Eye is twitching I’m bringing back all of my deconstructed emotional disconnected mentor Batman thoughts
#aimeespeaks#tim drake#red robin#I have said that in my backstory rewrite he’s just a sever latchkey kid case and there is no criminal neglect as in fanon#but I’ve also said Janet will be really a complicated character (it’s what she deserves)#and although I’ve not really talked about Jack he remains as he was for a lot of time original Robin run#extremely emotionally disconnected#like he’s not abused or neglected but going back to one of the three core aspects of my run#which is 1. why is he a vigilante 2. who is he and 3. the mental illness he has#and like it connects to all of it#his childhood is such a heavy focus cause it shapes he’s need to be not only useful but also emotionally dependable#and how those two needs play into why he is who he is#(I will get back to this but it largely comes back (to me this is lore I’m creating and one day will make canon if I can) (Janet deserves#to be a real character)#and like. unfortunately this really helps actually cause it bridges the gaps between his childhood and present with a blaring sign that#is his Robin years#I will largely skip over them and I don’t ever plan to address it#but my iteration of Tim does not see Batman as a father#he doesn’t want a dad who’s not his dad#his parents died when he was old enough that adoption wouldn’t ever really be considered the option emotionally#so he’s not like dick (who btw although he has a parental relationship with b never is adopted and that’s a seperate can of worms)#and he loved his parents who although emotionally u healthy genuinely loved and cared for him#(not like Jason. also he comes after Jason the only son Batman like set out to father (b4 bio Damian) (and don’t even get me started on#cass)#that’s not his dad that is one man in a line of emotionally unavailable mentors#(I have also not gotten into how entrenched in academia Tim was growing up with Janet (it’s never really implied he spent lots of time#around his parents buisness so. I’ll get into this later)#like a Batman who is canonically and unfortunately deeply emotionally unavailable and who is overall very unintreseted in a new Robin is.#so perfect for a child who had to develop extreme levels of emotional intelligence and independence young (aided by being a genius)#as a way to understand his mothers love

so this is where i humbly come in and ask your opinion on where to start with dc comics bc you know a lot and i trust your opinion and want more things to read. bc all the stuff i know now is from tiktok and shit. if it helps i lovee jason and batfam. HOWEVER, if you don’t feel like it that’s ok too but i figured i’d ask 🤓
i am SO glad u asked i used to dream of days like these
id start off from batman #408 (1987) to batman #429 (1989), that’s where jason first appears, his robin time and up to the death in the family arc (#426-429). so like the very crucial readings. special shoutout to #416. it was dick bruce jason heavy and i like it (i wrote a paragraph for this but i elected to erase it because i wrote down a shit ton of spoilers lol)
new titans #55 is a good one. there’s no jason there because he’s like dead but dick finds out about his death in that one and i am profoundly fond of dick and his older sibling guilt 😼 so including it here
if you want more robin!jason detective comics #569-581. he is so tiny and “robin is magic” in this one and its very endearing and i love love love it so much. like literally my son
more robin!jason. batman: the cult (1988?). BEAUTIFUL art and a very cool story, definitely worth a read
batman annual 25 (2006) jason comes back to life
red hood the lost days (2010) expands more on jason coming back & becoming red hood. bit eh in my opinion like definitely ignore the talia panels in the last issue lmaooo because why was that necessary bro but it does a pretty decent job showing jasons transition from robin to red hood
aaand finally under the red hood (batman #635-641, #645-650)
also check out teen titans volume 3 #29, jason and tim bonding time (he uhhhhh breaks into the teen titans tower and beats tim up. but pop off king because i liked the characterisation for both)

10/10 on Batman and Robin: Year One so far. Although, I’m biased because I am a sucker for anything with cute Robin Dick. As a bonus, it feels pretty modern classic for them so far.

If I had a nickel for every time, Dick Grayson was homeless (so far) I'd have two nickels (so far) which isn't a lot but it's sad that it happened twice (so far).

I support the "Batman was unfairly biased to Stephanie for XYZ reasons" crowd so strongly bc DC claims that Bruce is a master planner who is able to understand anyone's psychology but he didn't realize that literally every single one of Steph's problems as a teenager would've been solved by her joining a shitty punk band. If he couldn't figure that much out then he didn't understand her for a minute
#ramblings of a lunatic#PLEASE TALK TO ME I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS ON STEPHANIE IN A SHITTY PUNK BAND#her bandmates have turned into ocs it's stage 5 at this point boys#anyway what is steph dealing w/ pre-52 as spoiler that got her in hot water?#1. the anger issues. easily fixed by her getting to scream about beating her dad to death without actually doing it#2. nobody fucking listens to her (including batman). well when u are playing music ppl are definitely fucking listening#3. has no non-batfam friends and thus ends up feeling abandoned almost every time she gets kicked out of the group. bandmates are friends!#don't like being in your shitty house? go to your band mates house and jam!#need to articulate the anger issues in a way that doesn't disturb your frazzled paranoid boyfriend? write angsty songs!#also I do genuinely have a lot of thoughts on how music was applied to Stephanie's character and what it tells us about her#like she loved it. clearly. and she was GOOD at it too. steph is constantly perceived as a screw up and has pretty low opinion of herself#piano was something she could take pride in. in i believe issue 113 of tims og robin series-#-tim is AMAZED at her playing all these years later. so is nocturna a few issues earlier#there's a standard visual language in comics for good or bad music- notation drawn in either shaky or smooth lines#stephs are all smooth and golden. she's good even after all these years of not practicing#but all she says to tim after he compliments her is ''i used to be better...'' SHE SEES THE WORST IN HERSELF AND HER ABILITIES#SHE DESERVES A CHANCE TO FEEL GOOD AT AT LEAST ONE THING LIKE SHE FINALLY GOT TO AS BATGIRL IN HER SOLO#and onto my final point: dinah has several times expressed some degree of fondness/admiration for steph. steph has likewise trained w dinah#and thinks she's cool as fuck. which makes sense. bc dinah is cool as fuck#and what is dinah in??? that's right. a band#steph should join dinahs band for her mental health. this has been an essay#stephanie brown#spoiler dc#dc batgirl#batgirls#<- since that series re-canonized pianist steph!! bless them!

Pfft Alfred called Dick a "tornado in sweatpants." For some reason it reminded me of when Grifter called Dick a "goth gymnast."

Now that I’m finally catching up on reading the comics with Damian, I think I must admit that he’s probably my favorite bat boy. I want to hug him. He deserves a hug. Stephanie is still my favorite bat all around, but Stephanie AND Damian together just makes me very happy.
