I'm thinking of starting a Substack for posting my silly little hobby essays on food and disability advocacy. Would anyone be interested at all?

There’s a scientific journal called “Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List”.
In 2005, computer scientists David Mazières and Eddie Kohler created this highly profane ten-page paper as a joke, to send in replying to unwanted conference invitations. It literally just contains that seven-word phrase over and over, along with a nice flow chart and scatter-plot graph.
An Australian computer scientist named Peter Vamplew sent it to the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology in response to spam from the journal. Apparently, he thought the editors might simply open and read it.
Instead, they automatically accepted the paper — with an anonymous reviewer rating it as “excellent” — and requested a fee of $150. While this incident is pretty hilarious, it’s a sign of a bigger problem in science publishing. This journal is one of many online-only, for-profit operations that take advantage of inexperienced researchers under pressure to publish their work in any outlet that seems superficially legitimate.

You know what?
My ancestors would have wanted pasteurization, vaccines, antibiotics, disinfectants, birth control, psychiatric medications, pain management, anesthesia. My ancestors would have wanted to be able to keep their loved ones around longer, and not lose them too early/too soon to childbirths, injuries, bacterial infections, mental illnesses, and diseases that are curable and/or preventable in our modern day life.
Modern medicine saves lives.

as newspapers today dont tend to hire children, a modern day Tintin would run a clickbait YouTube channel, except the clickbait is 100% real every single time
he starts off as an irritating conservative pundit at 14, meets Chang then leaves the think tank paying him and launches his own independent channel and blows up shortly after. Chang helps with video editing and managing his socials and they often chat on video calls between adventures. Haddock, his foster dad, has absolutely no knowledge of his earlier videos.

If anyone's following me who has seen the: they brought dire wolves back articles.
Please understand this is a drastic failure of scientific reporting. What they have done is impressive science, but they have not brought dire wolves back.
They found a few gene fragments that were in dire wolves and manufactured similar in wolves.
To quote a reddit thread: it's like putting a few words of hamlet in another play and claiming its hamlet.
We have put jellyfish genes in cats to make them glow: those cats are not now jellyfish.
It's impressive to be able to identify and insert the genes like that, but these are not dire wolves and, to be frank, do not even resemble current models of dire wolves.
I want to make this clear. It is an impressive scientific achievement.
But the communication here is near outright fraudulent in my opinion.
I am rather dissappointed and can already feel the numerous convos I'm gonna have to have with random people online about this.
I hate being a killjoy.

🚨 Cool new project alert 🚨
WE- you, me, everyone- need to work together to get important science messages out to people.
We're in an all-hands-on-deck moment here.
We've learned the hard way that talking to each other on social media about these problems, while very important, is insufficient to get CORRECT information to a critical mass of people.
That's why, if you ask me, it's time to hit the street.
4 artists & 3 scientists collaborated on these posters. We hope YOU will put them out in your community. Each poster comes w/info about each topic.
Where should you put these posters?
Community Bulletin Boards
Classrooms
Your street-facing window
Wooden street poles
ETC
Here's who worked on this project:
Science Funding Saves Lives
Poster by Amy Schwartz
Article by @mikefeigin.bsky.social
Biology is Bigger than Binaries
Protecting Wildlife Starts with YOU
Article by me
Will our Oceans Thrive or Nosedive?
Article by me
Alright now go buy some posters and put them in the public space. I'd give them to you for free but uhhhh I'm broke and can't afford to. We're making them as cheap as we can.

Birds are famous for communicating vocally, but many have other options, too. Some communicate by dancing, for example, or by showing off their feathers. And according to a new study, at least one bird species does something more often associated with humans and great apes: symbolic gesturing. A songbird called the Japanese tit (Parus minor) uses fluttering wing movements to signal "after you," the study's authors report, similar to the way humans extend one open hand to let another person go first.

a guide to the exoparia
the presence of the exoparia doesnt actually change much for the way we reconstruct most dinosaur groups, however, it changes some minor things for two of the most well known dinosaur groups that should be taken into account:
