sally’s “i want him to know who he is, before your family tries to tell him who they want him to be.” and poseidon saying “he will be stronger for it on the other side. his mother raised him well.” and he is. percy is stronger on the other side. we’ve seen it so clearly through his quest. his confusion at how you have to earn the gods’ love, earn their respect. his conversation with annabeth on the train about it. his unwillingness to accept the ways of the gods. him realizing his mother wanted to keep him away from this world, and annabeth being the one to tell him that maybe it was for the better that sally did that. so that he wouldn’t be like them. annabeth’s “he isn’t that way. he’s better than that. maybe i was that way once. but i don’t want to be that way anymore.” the way percy would’ve turned out with a similar worldview to annabeth’s if he had been sent to camp so early on. and annabeth’s worldview changing so quickly after meeting percy. sally jackson raised that kid right. you would think that as a demigod, the half god side of percy is what’s important. but that’s not what makes him the hero. it’s the half mortal side of him that does. his humanity, his mortality, his mother. that is why percy is the hero that he is.

taiwan travelogue by yang shuangzi tr. lin king is indeed an award-winning banger and perhaps the first time in my life i've ever felt vindicated for dual-wielding a novel with its english translation because the act of translation itself is such a big theme in the novel. big win for metafiction-obsessed himejin everywhere!!
#i genuinely burst into tears twice just thinking about the ending of this book#read if you enjoy: narratives about colonialism. barriers to understanding formed by language and power dynamics. FOOD AS LOVE#i also just bought the authors most recent book and its also very fun and maybe what id recommend as a lighter entry point into her work#as a yuri thats also very slice-of-life with food-as-love themes but requires less historical/cultural background to access#alas no. 1 siwei st doesnt have a translation. yet... unless.......#txt#spoilers further in tags#i think part of what makes chizuru/chien-ho such an intriguing character is carried by the conceit of translation as interpretation#her role as someone who dreams of translating novels but not one who writes them... delivering others stories to a broader audience#shes very much a character who we only get to see from the outside; most notably from the perspective of the novel's unreliable narrator#which we read as a 2nd ed translation of the original japanese text by an uninvolved third party looking back years after the authors death#but it turns out [spoilers] chizuru herself wrote the 1st ed translation and the first time we hear *her* voice is in her translators note#and her perspective and the negative space between her words are both *infinitely* fascinating#even the concept! of translating a novel where youre a main character who the narrator loves and desperately wants to understand! wtf!!!!!!#rotating her in my mind. 小千妳到底是何方聖神啊...

With Commentary#ITD BE SO COZY just hangin out by the fireplace …. maybe its snowin outisde … if snow even exists anymore atp#a light fire cracklin and the study SEEMS totally quiet otherwise and yet…..#charles has been locked in to erik’s off-the-cuff literary analysis and mild comments for the past twenty minutes. its simple but its bliss#charles doesnt have to worry about being seen as invasive .. he doesnt have to suppress his powers …#the rare occasion erik lets charles into his mind for somethin so innocent .. ive made myself sick i fear#see now i wanna try writing a fic but 1.) have written in years 2.) id have to really think hard on how erik would commentate on a book#hm…… actually i do wonder what erik’s commentary on The Fable of the Bees would be …..#IN ANY CASE. maybe - at the very least- i can draw cherik by the fireplce someday ….#thatd be cute … hm …. depends on if i get in the mood for it down the line#anyways i have to drive back to my dorm !!! boo !!!! so good night everyone !!!!!

EMILY PRENTISS’ GOODREADS:
THE HOLY BIBLE
multiple authors
★☆☆☆☆ 0.1
Overly-preachy narrative, too many plot holes. Profiled God as a malignant narcissist with an inferiority complex. Can’t blame Satan for lashing out at has dad like that, rebellion is typical of scapegoated children in a toxic family dynamic.
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE
J.D. Salinger
★★★★★ 5.0
Didn’t read it, five stars anyway because its reputation precedes it.
HOW TO FIND AT-RISK KIDS WHO GREW UP IN A 360-DEGREE ENVIRONMENT OF FAMILY VIOLENCE
David Rossi, Jason Gideon
★★☆☆☆ 2.0
Literally ruining my life. But two stars because I was high when I read it and it made my brain feel fuzzy in a good way.
THE LORD OF THE FLIES
William Golding
★★★☆☆ 0.3
Strong concept, disappointing lack of women.
SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE
Kurt Vonnegut
★★★★★ 5.0
It’s so freaky-deaky, I love it.
Check out my Masterlist for more BAU scenarios

hhhhhh I need to properly reread Percy jackson again. This post brought to you by the fact I was about to make a post about a scene I very vividly remember of Will Solace trying to convince Pollux not to keep fighting with his good arm broken before Percy manages to convince him not to bc he promised Dionysus, then thought to myself "huh maybe I should fact check that- I mean I did also convince myself that Travis stoll died in this battle when he actually just went to college." And guess what? That scene ✨️didn't happen.✨️ Pollux was trying to convince Percy to let him rejoin the fight very half heartedly, while propped against a tree, and Percy was just like "hmmmm... no"
#Can you blame me tho.#SO much was going on in that book. It was literally JUST that battle and over the course of like 3 days#Here's some I found while skimming my copy of tlo for the scene in question:#Nico trying to rescue/ speak to his mum ft. Hades being a really shitty person (& shittier father)#Rachel's family helicopter almost crashing#Percy having a conversation with may castellan#Luke very belatedly realising “hm maybe I shouldn't give complete control of my body and mind to kronos”#This one random half-asleep demigod Percy runs into at one point that might’ve been Clovis? The demigod was said to be 12 tho-#So maybe his brother?#Prometheus shows up and gives Percy Pandora's jar#Percy getting thrown in prison by Hades and STRANGLES NICO FOR BRINGING HIM TO THE UNDERWORLD????#nico sends the guards to sleep tho so yay dream powers from his dad#And then Achilles's ghost shows up and basically just goes “are you fucking stupid or something. Why would you want my curse”#Chiron brings the party ponies to fight (they got drunk on rootbeer instead)#I think literally the only things from this book I accurately remembered were#1. Michael Yew convinces Percy to destroy a bridge while he's still on it#2. Annabeth moves to protect Percy's weak spot before she even knew where it was#3. One of Silenus's brothers dies and grover gets to be part of the council#4. Silena regrets being a spy and steals clarisse's armour to fight a drakon#5. Clarisse is PISSED that she did something so stupid and kills the drakon with her father's blessing#6. The fact Percy and Luke actually managed to converse during the Final Battle tm and Luke told Percy his weak spot#7. Ethan is a character who existed and then died. He was the son of Nemesis#Hm actually that's a lot more than I thought#But again there are Things happening in this book and there are Many Of Them and most of them are pretty fucked up actually.#anyway#pjo#Something something how is this a kids book etc

You know, I do believe there were times during the interrogation where Stephen imagined the relationship he ‘could have had’ with Thomas. Perhaps, there were even points where he “forgot” that this was an interrogation that would ultimately end in Thomas’s death, and let his mind wander to old times.
Like times when they worked with Wolsey. This is probably not the first time he’s seen Thomas hold his own in a hot seat; there had to be times when they were younger, working under Wolsey, when he sat and enjoyed seeing Thomas use his lawyer jargon, and run circles and circles around young men who think they could best him. And I mean even after Wolsey died the books, until Stephen is sent to France, they have a decent on-and-off relationship where they work together and occasionally, would spend time together.
But, I just took notice of the way he was looking at Thomas during the interrogation, the way they caught each other’s eye once or twice and held their gaze for just…a moment, as if Stephen was going to see how Thomas could wiggle his way out of this hole. He was amused because he knew Thomas more than anyone in there, longer than anyone in there. There was a time they were friends, a time where an event like this - Thomas using his wit to outsmart people - was just a common thing between them, and Stephen was impressed. But of course, when Norfolk started talking, reality came crashing down and Stephen had to accept that, this fire he enjoyed so much from Thomas, would be put out in less than what? Forty-eight hours? His friend, his enemy, the man he had hated but respected, the man he had in a way been manipulated into hating, who annoyed him so much but also brought him some forms of amusement and excitement would be dead. And he’d never see him again. Thomas was the only one imo who could both handle Stephen and bring out a more complex side of Stephen.
#thomas cromwell#wolf hall#stephen gardiner#looking at that scene again#and also#re-reading some things in the book and looking back at s1#they were really made to balance each other out#in addition to being parallels#stephen really upset the balance and it comes back to bite him in the ass - but he alrady knew tha twas going to happen#i would love a book that explore their dynamic while working under wolsey#because they were friends then#would i have trusted mantel to do it - no#becaus she got a lot wrong abt the relationship between wolsey and stephen#and even stephen's (lol did you see waht i did there) past#like this idea that he hated wolsey and thomas for being lowborn#when he himself was lowborn - and a bastard - like in hindsight it makes sense if he wanted to push away from that part of himself#but the way the books/show did it - was kinda weird#if she wrote a book focusing on their time she'd probably make wolsey's death result in stephen poisoning him lmao#but i wouldn't mind a complex relationship between wolsey and stephen if it were portrayed as realistic and not one dimensional#there are TWO big reasons i think stephen would dislike wolsey#1.) being the whole bastard thing - because wolsey treated dorthea the same way stephen was treated by his family and shunned her#and then 2.) wolsey didn't take being a priest seriously - at least in stephen's eyes -but lbr stepeh was the only priest in all of england#who took his job seriously

character inspo for blair and claire, inspired by @oakwolves. i could talk about them forever <3
#oc: blair stewart#oc: claire swanson#spencer hastings randomly being there is bothering me but 1. it's true and 2. she's the only no nonsense straight-forward character i could#think of. plus book spencer being extremely Obsessive with (everything) is a very blair trait. rosemary is there for the same reason.#i could put more than six characters/people for claire. i think her character trope is very clear from these though.#but remember she's a person not a trope. i think gilda/rita hayworth and lorelei/marilyn monroe being here add to this point#i don't know when i'll get the chance to mention this but blair and claire are very inspired by gothic literature. goth stuff too but#fear. the past upon the present. claustrophobia. haunting! the female gothic is very present in claire i think. blair... no comment.#<- the house that makes you insane. this reflects in universe on their personalities too. claire is WEIRD. please do notice her interests#clash with her presentation. if already have an idea of claire in your mind. blair sees death everywhere and they study grief later in life#my californian gothic cousins#didn't want to put jennifer in for claire because i think that's more of a parallel than an inspiration (claire sees herself in jen) but..

Something that I don't think ever got addressed: How old is Pearl?
If Pink's and White's pearls got swapped--possibly as punishment for something--then White wasn't always controlling Pink Pearl.
Which means our pearl (White Pearl? Rainbow Pearl?) might be way older than she thinks.
#SU on the mind because we just finished season 1#I forgot how much I fucking love these characters#SU#Steven Universe#another thought: Pearl's the mom friend because she's iridescent like... mother of pearl#get it?#also: if she ever did want to run away from gem stuff she could blend in with humans if she tried hard enough#and: I think it's kinda funny that she was never made for any kind of fighting but went through a WAR and SURVIVED#like I LIVED BITCH#I think it's funny to imagine all these nice-looking young ladies who are secretaries or PAs or something but one has learned how to STAB#can you tell I've thought about her A LOT?#I also forgot until tonight's rewatching that Peridot's way younger than all of them#her being a fucking ipad kid makes a whole lotta fucking sense#also knowing that everyone was likely gone already when Amethyst emerged: she was so fucking lonely wasn't she?#until Rose and everyone found her#also very important to me: Ruby and Sapphire are SO fucking cute OMFS#speaking of Peridot: imagine her POV#random day at work and you meet a rebellion group from a war you've only read about in history books#I also thought it was kinda funny that I'm pretty sure she sounds more feral in later seasons

I hate when people more knowledgeable about history than me are somehow less politically informed
#Errr or idk how to put it like I wouldn't call myself all that politically informed either#But like idk I was talking to this girl who was like we need more traffic cops. It is bad there r less cops on the road coz of#Increased awareness of black people being killed in routine traffic stops + other shit that changed during onset of covid#Because now ppl r driving less safely. But we can't just bring back the cops. So we should abolish the police via#Creating more departments for specific things so traffic enforcement should exist independently of what we now consider policing#N she was saying other stuff abt the creation of these departments and I was like. I really don't care for reform unless it#Exists as intermediary to dissolution of entire systems and overhauling of infrastructure.#Like I'm not excited to endorse what you're talking about even on the level of Solving Traffic because the solution should be radically#transforming the infrastructure to be less car-centric and develop better public transportation#N her response was 'well we should do what we can now with what we got' or something n idr#how I responded to that but idk if the thing that makes you uncomfortable and inspired towards change is#more dangerous traffic as opposed to like. The brutalization and fear of that comes w cops.#Then idk I don't really care about your priorities or addressing your concerns. I just cannot bring myself to care.#Because 1. You obviously don't have my concerns as a racialized person who relies on public transportations in mind as urgent#(Which is to me like I don't trust once you get your reforms you'd not just#shrug your shoulders and call it unfortunate whatever issues remain that other people suffer)#2. It is plainly ignorant to think any enforcement of Law Order Safety etc in a white supremist settler colony wouldn't reproduce violence#She was like they should just have tasers not guns and it's like. K people have been killed with tasers.#People have been killed with batons even. Like. Completely wrong focus ig because You're scared of guns?? Idk.#But anyway before that conversation I kinda felt like an idiot compared to her coz when we'd go to the library I'd only want to read comics#& she was only reading non-fiction books like history and politics etc#So it's like her opinions are technically more Well-Informed than mine n it's kinda hard for me to argue coz I just have like. Principles.#~

one thing that is so genius on a craft level with the broken earth books is that the derogatory for 'orogene' is - That Way - on 100% purpose. you're supposed to feel like it's not a word to say out loud, it's supposed to be uncomfortably similar to words you've already heard and know as cruel slurs in the real world. it's a direct fucking parallel designed to deliberately give the reader that crawling feeling and it works so well i dont even feel right typing it up for a post
#which leads of course into direct parallels when orogenes reclaim it and start calling themselves it as a use name#which gives ESSUN the ick . despite using it herself in a derogatory/self-deprecating way#how they're not supposed to use it in the fulcrum because it's a slur. but this also gives them no framework for reclaiming it#an orogene who's grown up with that mindset will think it's crude or self-hating to start using the r-version in earnest#and this supposed mark of propriety and politeness thus becomes yet another way for the fulcrum to exert control#'don't use that word it's a dirty word.' 'we're the only organization on earth that will treat you like people. but we both know you're NOT#etc etc#which i think this level of bare-bones just-this-close-to-reality worldbuilding#might be part of what's prevented the series from getting as big as some other similar spec fic series#it's full of fantastic elements but the main conflict/problem with the world is a 1:1 problem we already have#i imagine a lot of readers feel uncomfortable about that#but also. as illustrated by this exact 1:1 problem. it's a very Black series by a Black author that is only ostensibly about people who can#move rocks with their minds#which is unfortunately the other reaosn i think it doesn't have the audience of say. baru#and i love baru! good books. having a lot of fun with them#but jemison's ability to write about the same things has this extra toothy edge that baru just ... won't. just by nature of experience#anyway there is so much in these books . god

finally broke down and bought the world of thedas in physical copies and i got the notification the other day that My Order Shipped. but when it came today it only had the second volume :/
#it also didnt even have a packing slip#and online it acknowledged that only one book got sent out but also doesnt indicate if the order was only partially fulfilled#my fear that they fucked up vs my own customer service background insisting that i give them lenience bc they cant do everything immediatel#vs my fear that if i wait TOO long to raise the issue theyll be like. why are you just now bringing it up.#but realistically one week is not that long. it's just throwing me off that it didnt indicate there will eventually be a second shipment#but also also!! i dont mind waiting#maybe an unpopular opinion but i do not mind waiting for both books to ship in the same box at once#i know it's not strictly book 1 and the sequel but i still feel like i cant read vol2 until i read the first one yk

I came up with this three-way table to help me (and now you, if you want) to rate things out of 5 stars. I was thinking of books and films when I made it, but you can probably use it for other stuff.
The idea is that you rate the thing on how much stuff you loved and how much stuff you hated, and those things weight against each other. There's only one way to get 5 stars or 1 star, so those should end up as the rarest ratings, wtih 3 stars being the most common.
'Spicy' means that the thing inspires emotion, whether positive or negative, while 'bland' means it doesn't affect you much either way.
An example of a 3-star (spicy) - for me personally - would be the Twilight series, because there's plenty of garbage in there but also some things that are like crack to me. I can't think of an example of a 3 star (bland) because by nature they don't stick in the mind.
(This also assumes giving 0 stars isn't allowed. That'd throw it out of whack...)
#star rating#reviewing#rating books#rating films#organic home grown content#100 tier#1000 tier#10000 tier

Was dicking around on youtube earlier and saw a video about something called “the hardest reading challenge you’ll ever do” …why do I want to do it 🧐
#round 2 JUST got announced and it starts more or less in july (although the creator said you can do it any time & obviously you can do round#1 first if you want. or not do it. or only do bits of it. like. they’re not in charge of what other people read lol)#so that felt kind of like.. yeah july would be the perfect time to start it#the reason it is so hard is it’s a whole bingo board and for most of the squares; you’re not just reading one book. you’re reading like 5+#i mean i read a lot lowkey. i read 13 books in may and i’m up to 7 so far in june and mind you i have two jobs#don’t ask me about my sleep schedule; my social life or the state of my house because you will not get a good answer#my point is i think it’s achieveable. and i love doing challenges. the reason i’ve read so much the past 2 months#is i’ve been doing reading challenges#like i genuinely want to complete my tbr but sometimes i need the serotonin rush of a checklist#and sometimes i get overwhelmed seeing how many books i have. so i feel like narrowing it down to a category is kind of nice#i think i will start in july. specifically i want to start with the series prompt first#i feel like i never fucking read series anymore but i have a lot of them#personal

This is it. You read enough of their posts and they flat-out SAY they don't care about people in this country. "Nothing is more important than genocide, and we can all suffer because Palestine is suffering, and we can put up with it if it means ending the genocide!!!"
Except they're personally not in a position to suffer, so they're signing up the people around them to suffer on their behalf, which is NOT their decision to make. Meanwhile, they're so moralistically broken that they refuse to vote for the person who just - by pure coincidence - happens to be in office when Israel (NOT Biden and NOT the US) chose to conduct the genocide. It's all about their OWN personal feelings and remaining personally "pure" (i.e. the trolley problem). They "can't live with themselves" if they voted for Biden, so they won't, or they'll vote against him in some delusion of heroism to "punish" him, in complete detachment from all reality.
So the truth of the matter is: the genocide fans don't even care about Palestine. They care about 1) their moral purity for the purposes of posturing on social media like a good little sjw, and 2) they want to be the little hero of their own little world tragedy.
Of course, this means that they cannot, or refuse to, understand that there are any other important issues in the world or in their own country. It ALSO means that they cannot grasp that, even if Palestine was the only issue on the planet, Biden is that country's best hope in terms of an American president.
They're binge drinking tragedy, at Palestine's expense, to literally live out a self-hero revenge fantasy. They are children.
(this was an ask I got which the user had intended to send anonymously and asked me to not reveal who they are)
I think it's because many of them don't care - it's about their own individual feelings and ideas that matter, and how it connects to the broader Ideological Battle.
Additionally, I think many have succumbed/been radicalized/fallen into the doomerism, as well as the misguided and flawed belief of accelerationism.
And also, a good number of them think they won't personally have to worry, so they can indulge in being so very morally "pure".
#commentary#Palestine#hi this is why democrats suck#the only thing worse than a republican is a democrat#they will stab you in the back for one (1) corn chip#just to feel like the child hero of a little child fantasy book#or to look like the goodest person in front of their little sjw circle friend group#and they'll sell you out to do it#and they'll sell Palestine out to do it#living out their little revenge fantasy life#they're fans of genocide is what they are. it's catharsis for them to cry about it and then they feel powerful by punching down#at everyone in their own country via their vote#there's no concept of positive action for the purpose of achieving results#there's no concept of strategy#there's no 'end goal' in mind; it's only momentary self-satisfaction#pure gluttony
