How are we feeling about ensekai’s emu3 translation!!! (I’m mad)

(if you remember the 3 whole posts i made when asahi got de-gayed on EN you'll know i am mad too and that this is probably going to get long)

i don't like to be too cynical but it was so obvious that they were going to change that line, i had a feeling since the event first released on JP and after the incident with Asahi where I went through and tracked down multiple other examples of EN removing queer subtext it became clear to me that in no way shape or form was "emu-chan really loves nene-chan" making it to EN without getting changed. what i didn't expect was them changing Nene's line after Luka's comment, which actually makes this whole situation far worse than many of their other instances of toning down queer subtext.

for anyone who isn't aware of what happened, in chapter 5 of the current Emu event, there's a scene where Nene, Rui and the Virtual Singers are talking about what would cheer Emu up. The vsingers all talk about how much Emu loves spending time with Nene, leading to the following exchange

If you look for them, any fan TL of this scene will be something similar to this:

Luka: ...Fufu. Emu-chan really loves Nene-chan, doesn't she? Nene: Th-that's nothing special...

EN's official translation is this:

So what's the issue? I'll start with Luka's part. In the original text, she uses the word daisuki, which can mean to "like a lot" or "love". It's a word you will see frequently in the idol/idol-adjacent genre of games, due to its ambiguity in that it can be read as either platonic or romantic when used towards a person, and often will be used in ambiguous situations so that it's harder to confirm the writers' intentions either way. so here, fans of the emu/nene ship could view the fact that emu loves spending her time with nene as more on the romantic side, but people who don't like the ship could view it as platonic and move on.

while they didn't translate daisuki directly, Luka's line still works, and still contains the ambiguity that works as ship tease in the original text. it's a perfectly fine localisation that still conveys the original intent. despite that, there is something to be said about EN's consistent refusal to translate daisuki as love in most instances when it's not used on An/Kohane (but then again, EN has literally teased An/Kohane on their twitter account so is it all that surprising?).

Here's some examples:

Aibou no koto ga daisuki de / he loves his partner -> he cares about his partner very much (The Power of Unity chapter 7 when Kaito is comparing Arata to Akito and Toya)

HARUKA-CHAN, DAISUKI DAYOOOO!!! / HARUKA-CHAN, I LOOOOOVEEE YOU!!! -> You're the best!!! (Dear Me, As I Was Back Then chapter 4 when minori is at an ASRUN concert. this one isn't actually that great of a localisation)

Honachan no koto daisuki dakara. Kore de iinda yo. / I love Honachan, so this is fine. -> I want what's best for her. And this is it. (Leo/need main story chapter 14 after Saki tells Honami she won't bother her anymore)

Minna daisuki de - taisetsuna tomodachi na no / I love them all - they're my dearest friends -> They're all amazing, and very dear to me. (Leo/need main story chapter 17. this isn't good either)

What's particularly amusing about that last one is that there's a second official translation for it that I assume was done by JP staff (since EN never promoted doing the Journey to Bloom subs like they did back when they provided subs for Petit SEKAI) that actually keeps the word daisuki as love.

It's a better localisation than the official EN team one.

Questionable localisation choices aside, Luka's line is fine and is actually in line with the original. The issue with this localisation very much lies with Nene's part, because that is an entirely new line.

In the original text, Nene's "that's just normal" or "that's nothing special" or however you choose to TL it, is meant to be her questioning Luka's statement, since all the things that the other vsingers said that Emu liked were pretty normal things like going shopping and playing video games with nene. To Nene, these things are normal activities for them to do together, so she gets embarrassed by the fact that Luka concludes from that information that Emu loves Nene. When I dissect it like that I think you can really tell what the writers were going for here lol.

"That's just us being friends" does still convey the idea that Nene thinks these activities aren't anything out of the ordinary and she isn't sure why the vsingers are picking these out as some of Emu's favorite things to do, but it's very different from the original line. "But those are just normal things we do together" is something I just came up with on the spot, but it's a lot closer to the original text and still conveys the same meaning. The fact they changed the line to "that's just us being friends" is, honestly, not even subtle that they're covering up queer subtext. The original scene was very clearly written in as ship tease, and EN mentioning "friends" for no reason, especially since the word nor anything close to it was not used in the original, is instantly a red flag because it's like the go-to for queerbaiting and censorship. This was intentional. There was no need for them to specify that the relationship is platonic, Luka's part is ambiguous for a reason so that fans can view it how they like.

Just to top all this off, here's Rin's original line just before that Luka+Nene interaction:

And here's Rin's line from the official EN translation:

That's not the same thing, but even more weirdly, the incorrect part (super fun->really loves) is a correct translation for the part changed in Luka's line. So, they can do it, they are willing to say "really loves", just not in the right places. Maybe because Rin's part is less personal than Luka's part? It's strange actually, this isn't the first time they've done this either. Off the top of my head I can think of an example from Shiho's Varied Kindness 2* story where they translated the word "suki" as really loves, despite that being much stronger than the original word used (and the fact that daisuki is used a lot in the Leo/need stories and it's incredibly rare if not entirely unknown for them to translate it correctly).

It's not subtle that they're trying to remove implications of the characters possibly being queer, they did it in curtain call and they did it in walk on and on, and multiple times before then too. And considering some of the content in this year's events and the amount of times they say daisuki alone, it's gonna keep happening. honestly i hate the fact that i keep trying to justify the translations in these posts. these translations are intentional. what happened in the curtain call translation back in october says enough. when a character who uses explicitly romantic language towards another guy passes as a straight character in the translation you know they're doing it on purpose.

oh and once again, it's only the EN server that has this issue. The scene in question was translated almost word-for-word on the TW and KR servers.

read fan translations. they're better than what EN gives us and people put a lot of effort into them.

The Crow and The Huntsman

Aka a sort of backstory for my Night Lord OC written in the style of a Nostraman fairytale

A long time ago, sometime or another when the starlight still flickered through Nostramos cloudy sky, there lived a crow. The crow was sickly; patches of white had appeared on her feathers, and she had aged beyond her time. With this crow lived her chick. The little chick was well loved by his mother; she spent the nights teaching him what she could and finding what food she could so that her little chick might one day thrive. Still, the mother crow worried; it seemed the nights had only gotten darker and all the prey had already been caught. Determined to find out where it had all gone, she tucked her chick into the nest and took flight. Eventually she spotted a huntsman and his great raptors that circled the dark and smoggy skies; she landed nearby, hopeful that the scraps of their hunt would keep her chick fed until the next night. She perched and she waited, but to her surprise the huntsman called out to her.

“Oh little crow, won’t you come closer so that I might speak with you?”

The crow obliged and hopped closer to the huntsman, curious as to what he wanted with a frail bird like her, so unlike the great beasts that flew above his head.

“Little crow, you push yourself nightly but often have nothing to show; why not let your chick become one of my raptors and give yourself time to heal?”

The crow tilted her head and observed the raptors as they hunted; they circled their prey, and one by one they swooped towards the creature, their sharp talons and strong wings just brushing the creature before they shot back into the sky. The whole affair was like a game to see who could give the poor thing the biggest scare. The crow frowned at this; she cawed her reply to the huntsman’s question as politely as she could.

“You must forgive me great huntsman, but I must refuse. Your raptors are cruel; my little chick would be ill-suited to your service.”

“Ah, but they are also happy little crow” the huntsman retorted, not at all bothered by the crows refusal. “See how they smile and laugh as they work.”

The little crow looked closer and saw that the huntsman was right. The raptors laughed amongst themselves and cheered as their brothers dived, the whole affair seemed like great sport to them. Still, the crow shook her head and took her leave; the huntsman watched thoughtfully as she went.

“Ah, perhaps another night.”

The next night the crow tucked her chick in once more and left her nest in search of food, and once again she came across the huntsman and his raptors; this time the raptors had seized their prey and were tearing it apart rather thoroughly. The little crow landed once more in the hopes of few scraps to take home, and once more did the huntsman turn to greet her.

“Oh little crow, won’t you come closer so that I might speak with you?”

Once again the crow obliged and hopped closer to the huntsman, now with a weary caution to the slaughter before them.

“Little crow, you hunt so often but weigh so little; why not let your chick become one of my raptors so that you might eat for yourself?”

The crow looked at the raptors as they hunted and saw that they were scarcely eating, but instead tore through the good meat and organs with wild abandon, leaving what was left of them ignored on the ground as they worked. The crow turned to the huntsman and gave her reply.

“You must forgive me great huntsman, but I must refuse; your raptors are wasteful, my chick always finishes his plate. He would be ill-suited to your service.”

The huntsman was unbothered by another refusal; instead, he gestured to the raptors as he replied. “They are wasteful because they are well fed; for them hunting is a pastime rather than a necessity.”

The crow looked and found that yes, indeed, the raptors were well fed; no matter how she looked she couldn’t see a single bone on them, nor did she see any squabbles over food. Still, she shook her head. This time before she could take her leave, the huntsman scooped up the precious meat and held it out to her.

“Ah, maybe another night, but please take this for you and your chick. We have little need of it.”

Unable to refuse a generous offer, the crow took the offered food and flew back to her nest and chick the precious food clutched in her beak.

The night after that, the crow once again tucked her chick into the nest and took to the sky; she had not flown far until once again she came across the huntsman and his raptors. The raptors this time were perched upon the buildings, half covered in shadow and half covered by their own great wings it was if they were wearing some strange cloaks; she hadn’t even landed when the huntsman called out to her.

“Oh little crow, won’t you come closer so that I might speak with you?”

The crow landed at the huntsman’s side and tucked her wings about herself as she waited to hear what he would ask of her tonight.

“Little crow, you work so hard but gain so little; why not let your chick become one of my raptors and give yourself time to rest?”

The crow looked upon the raptors on their perches unsurely; they were as still as statues and seemed as unlikely to move. Turning to the huntsman, the crow gave a reply.

“You must forgive me great huntsman, but I must decline; your raptors are lazy, and my chick is a hard worker and full of energy. He would be ill-suited to your service.”

The huntsman smiled before gently correcting the crow. “They are not lazy but patient; they know where all the best prey will be, so they need not waste their time searching.”

The crow looked closer, and upon following the raptor's gaze she found the huntsman was right; they were not resting but waiting. With this the crow knew that she had been beaten; she looked mournfully at the ground before turning to the huntsman who wore an expectant smile. With a simple nod she took flight to return to her nest; this time the hunter followed behind her with his raptors at his heels.

Not the next night or the night after that but many nights afterwards, the crow left her quiet nest and took flight. She was now in good health, well rested and well-fed; from the sky, she saw the huntsman who had spoken to her so long ago and his great raptors as they circled the sky. She landed a distance away so that she might observe in peace, she knew she would not be disturbed for she had nothing left the huntsman could take. Scanning the flock, she spotted a raptor not yet fully grown with white speckled upon his feathers; she realised the great beast was her little chick, now a great hunter in his own right. He was first perched upon the roof, content and unbothered, watching a particular spot on the ground with a quiet disinterest, and then when a little prey creature emerged he and his brothers rose into the sky, they circled the ground beginning to swoop down around it. The crow listened for her chick, she heard the smile in his caws as boisterous laughter sounded from his beak. The raptors fell upon their prey at dizzying speed, the poor thing had little chance at escape. As he tore into the little creature, the crow saw that he was indeed well fed; his feathers were sleek and shiny, and he was unbothered by the flesh that flew from his reach and on to the ground to waste as he worked. Finally the crow looked upon the raptor's face and found that she scarcely recognised it; she knew the beast ahead of her was her chick, but the curious glint he’d always held eyes now had a calculating edge as if looking for faults rather than answers. His gentle laugh was no less full of humour but it had become sharp and quick, a cruel edge had overcome the childlike joy it had once held. The crow shook her head and ignored the uneasy feeling in her heart; he was still her chick, and he was happy and well-fed; he could now wait for the prey to come to him without fear of missing out. These are the things a mother dreams of for her child; she could only hope her chick felt she had done right by him.

Once more the crow took flight and returned to her nest, content that she would never have to worry about another night.

something i genuinely adore about tadc is how painfully flawed everyone in the circus is. and not in a small way

everyone does SOMETHING that negatively impacts the others. but it makes the fact that you are supposed to sympathize with and really connect with them all the more potent. because its easy to want to put a bunch of characters in a bad situation together and to just have them all be nice to each other and everyone and never make mistakes because theres no reason to hurt each other, and most of them dont TRY to, but the way they cope is so, so realistic for each of their personalities, and it doesnt always mesh with the others, and sometimes it exceeds self destructive and Just Hurts Others, Too

they still generally care about each other and the mistakes they make and the ways they end up hurting each other dont lose their weight but like. it doesnt take away from their humanity and the fact that they are all trying so hard to manage in an awful situation

and the characters seem to have sooome sort of understanding of this too. not fully, because the characters dont tend to be 100% communicative, but when they hurt each other, it often makes EVERYONE uncomfortable. because these are the only people they have. these are their friends. and theyre all coping. but it doesnt change how much it affects them (best illustrated by ragathas lines at the start of ep 2 or gangles 'i love her, but after a while it gets kinda hard to tell how genuine shes actually being'). its not all like this, theres a good amnt of variety, but characters knowing this but not really knowing what to do about it is very painful in an effective way

(i think a subtle example of this is how zooble handles gangles situation in ep 4- they were so genuinely trying to help her because they care. but could tell as the day went on that oh, this is not working at all and its making things worse, and they leave gangle alone- something that very genuinely couldve been the moment she abstracted, because of the mask zooble gave her- and we dont get to have a super blatant explanation of zoobles thoughts on it, but they reach a fairly healthy conclusion about it that helps both of them, and i like that a lot, because on paper zooble could be placed at fault but the narrative doesnt dwell on it excessively, because thats not the point. i dont know if that tangent makes sense but i think about it sometimes. i think zooble wasnt 'to blame' but it was still a mistake, which is a hard balance to strike, and having them help at the end feels extremely effective at rounding it off!!!)

but like. in general its complicated balancing making characters in a bad situation act flawed because it can run the risk of seeming like the story is scolding them or blaming them for the situation theyre in, or like youre expected to not sympathize with them despite it (though the inverse also has complications- if characters in a bad situation never mess up, it feels unrealistic and hard to relate to, and can imply that their innocence is why whats happening to them is bad at all), but the show handles it so well

even the characters who are genuinely trying all try in different ways- some of them have similar outlooks or attitudes towards these thing but theres vital differences for ALL of them- sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. in fact some of the more painful mistakes characters have made in the show have come from them so genuinely trying (like the thing i mentioned w zooble, or basically Everything Ragatha Does, or pomnis first attempt at helping gangle, etc), which hits harder than if every mistake characters made had wholly selfish and cruel goals.

i mean, there is a selfishness to many of the characters' actions but imo not in a way thats not warranted. because all of them are in a horrible setting. its uncomfortable to watch characters be selfish. but it is a natural instinct to survive. its not the foundation of most of their actions, but when it is, its uncomfortable but hard to completely disparage them for in a way that makes you feel kinda conflicted

and like. it hurts to be doing your best and for that to make things worse, but its what happens often in the show. because no one in a bad situation is gonna handle it well. by the very nature of trying to survive something is gonna give, but it makes the themes of the show so much more powerful. that making sure the people around you dont feel unloved, cherishing them and finding meaning with others is no less important just because everyone is fucking up. it complicates things, for sure, but it doesnt make those characters exempt fromt this. theres a reason pomni tells gummigoo that she doesnt want "anyone" to feel like theyre nothing, and that kinger doesnt add ANY quallifiers to making sure people feel wanted and loved (not that i think either of them were thinking SUPER super hard, but it conveys smth from the perspective of the narrative

it gets complicated when you add in jax for sure, since i think on the surface he IS the exception to this concept- none of the characters like him, including pomni or kinger. but i think this is something thats gonna be examined further down the line, bc hes the main complicating factor in this reading of the show, but i feel like thats on purpose. hes universally disliked (and so is caine, in a different way) and his actions arent mistakes. they are him coping. the show has made it clear that he can be a complex person AND also a piece of shit. his actions dont detract from the fact that hes a person and the show reminds us of this. so it makes things so messy, but im genuinely super excited to see how the show examines that. where his character goes is, imo, going to be a massive piece of how this show fleshes out this concept

when the character associated with red and black has a stoic outward appearance but is often headcanoned as a bit weird, was initially created as a weapon, watched their sibling (or headcanoned sibling) get killed in front of them, probably has some kind of trauma, has a vauge connection to someone who has a lot of friends, menaced the world they live in for somewhat misguided reasons, can shoot fire from their feet, and are/have been entangled with an organization that has at least vauge ties to the government

Do you ever feel like your characters have more... depth than you do as an actual real human being? More meaning?

It's funny that as a writer, I like making characters with so many vast perspectives and so many emotions, and then in real life I'm... this awkward person who eats and sleeps and goes to school and doesn't contribute much. Seriously I don't have a single thought in my head. When someone asks me to explain something I'm so scatterbrained and can't really put it into words well

But as soon as I force myself to write, boom, there's so many ideas out there that I didn't even know I could understand. That I didn't know was even POSSIBLE for me to comprehend. My characters can wax poetic for paragraphs about the nature of suffering or anarchy or their trauma while in real life if someone asked me about any of those things I'd go "eh I don't know I'm not that thoughtful of a person." In real life I'm bad with expressing words and thoughts, and online I'm bad with expressing emotion.

But my characters aren't.

It's fun for me to visualize that they're spirits in the air being channeled through my body, possessing me through every single letter on the page. Spirits summoned forth in fleeting moments of inspiration before I go back to scrolling through my phone and doing nothing. Characters that have more capacity for thought and feeling than I ever will, because they aren't me.

...Except that they are. Of course. Maybe they're untapped little parts of my voice, yearning to be let out... I don't know. Probably. But it's why I like writing, because I get to feel like different people for a while and it's really, really freeing.

The Entire False Lore (Over One Thousand AU)

[This is a transcript of some messages I sent in the friend groupchat about OOTAU, so the sentences won't be very neat or grammatical.]

Like. Oh no your parents locked you in a barn because you and your sister are identical twinsssssssss. And you have fangs (goddamit OOTAU!Wels) so clearly you're a changeling fae and your sister is real. Your parents basically hide you from the world in a literal barn, and also you have some guy from the forest who brings you random stuff, and you might be friends. Then your sister ends up in the military, and takes you with her to the capital, and hides you in her new house (this time "for your safety" but like. You wanted to run away and she didn't let you, and you're really bitter about it). Then it turns out she's been in the Rebellion this whole time and is a spy in the military, which you know because you snuck out to meet random forest guy and he's helping the Rebellion. She gets found out, but the army imprisons her without killing her, because she's too important. You realise they're gonna search the house and kill you tommorow, unless you delay it somehow. You cut your hair to military length (which was the only difference between you and your sister) You go to the King and accuse your sister of being that one changeling twin your (long dead) parents never killed. You two are 15 at this point btw. Not traumitising at all definitely. You say she did all that to oppose you specifically, and that you were always loyal to the regime. YOUR SISTER IS THE CHANGELING AND ONLY YOU KNEW. SHE IS EXECUTED, YOU GATHER SUPPLIES AND FAKE YOUR DEATH WITH HER BODY BEFORE THE SMOKE CLEARS. The welsing gods are after you…it was all for nothing… But random forest guy was a Seraphim the whole time (highest rank of angel) and blesses you so now you're finally hidden. Oh and btw your sister isn't dead some motherfucker revived her.

Continuing: random forest guy is now looking for your sister because she's in danger, and she has mirror powers so she possessed him. He stops being possessed on account of being a Seraphim and DOESN’T KILL YOUR SISTER FOR SOME REASON (just. Not being capable of murder. That's the reason. OOTAU!False, you need therapy) Suddenly Lizzie drowned (somehow?? Last you remembered she had water powers and was a fish) and everyone's dying, and random forest guy is dead, and then his sibling comes back from the not-so-dead and tries to kill you for some reason even though you've never interacted (you'll never guess it. ✨They're possessed✨) then you're saved by some greyscale replica of forest guy who traps you in the greyscale land (the Helsian pale forest. It's very large) AND UH OH SINCE WHEN IS YOUR SISTER FINALLY DEAD AND IS THAT WELSKNIGHT WITH THE STEEL CHAIR

*walks in, removes eye protective wear and hangs up labcoat after a long day of Observing One Piece Ship Discourse On Twitter fieldwork* so while it may appear strange that people really readily say "luffy is canon aroace/doesnt care about any of that" whenever someone makes a truther post about luffy/hancock and then those same people may turn around and share a bunch of posts about gay ships involving luffy, it's actually more of a symptom of the fact that while most people posting said gay luffy ships are completely aware that their ships will not/could not/probably even should not actually be canon and are deep in the hypothetical, many dudebro types who ship luffy with hancock are completely convinced that their ship absolutely should or even will become canon, simply because he is a male protagonist and she is an extremely attractive woman who is interested in him, and it makes "no sense" for luffy to not go with her, either because they think that is how Stories Should Work (heteronormativity) or because they want Coolguy Chad Luffy and think having a hot woman obsessed with him like, adds to his coolness points in some vague objectifying way, which got more and more misogynistic sounding the longer i tried to find a way to word that sentence. this last interpretation does disservice to both of their characters and frankly, completely doesn't comply with any of the reasons hancock fell in love with him in canon in the first place. if you look for more then a minute at either of their characters you can tell that in canon it would never work, not even just because luffy is completely and entirely disinterested and in all likelihood that will never change, but because although I would say hancock's love is based on real traits of his she respects and was deeply moved by, she idolizes him and her fantasies about being with him involve shit he wouldn't actually do or say. she loves him because he's, literally, the only man she's ever met- and in the current day, often only person she knows across the board besides literally her sisters, who doesn't immediately treat her like a sexual object- and he only doesn't because of his fundamental and absolute disinterest in her, romantically or sexually. they exist in a paradox, and that paradox is used as a source of comic relief. what they have going on would be LESS interesting if he liked her in that way. if he was interested in her she would not like him in the first place. this got really off topic sorry. what im saying is this is why 1 person posting about how luffy and hancock are Totally Canon Endgame because who could turn down such a bad bitch!!!!!!! is a mischaracterization statement that prompts response or backlash in a way that 20 people posting zolu making out sloppy style in a corner completely aware that they are indulging in a mirror dimension and He Would Not Fucking Say That is not
