Serenity settled in the space between them,  warm and unhurried in its comfort.  Lara allowed herself to savor it for just one moment  —  watching the fragments of sunlight breaking through the curtains turn Verso’s eyes ultramarine,  and his skin near-golden in spots.  Fine art in its purest form,  she might have argued,  but then she supposed such a statement likely would have verged on blasphemy in this house.  

❝Je dois filer.❞  Whispered against his lips,  with her legs very much interlocked around his waist,  the words carried very little weight.  Nevertheless,  there would be no hiding her continued misconduct if she remained here much longer.  Renoir had already reprimanded her once;  suggesting she should not be roaming the halls in the middle of the night,  least of all so close to Verso’s bedroom.  She could only imagine the commotion if he found her in his bed.  ❝Ma moitié.  Your father will not let me hear the end of it.❞ 

Their very own sword of Damocles.  There was no sense in arguing,  she’d found.  Modern rules of etiquette were one thing,  surely,  but what she was dealing with were the rules of one singular household.  Much as one might argue that their relationship was already common knowledge in either country,  his parents still harbored certain expectations of propriety.  None that she personally cared about,  really — but there was an art to pretending.  With the lights on,  at least.  

Catching his bottom lip between her own,  Lara let her hands travel down the sides of his neck,  past his collarbones,  down to his chest.  She’d left a mark there,  she noticed,  just above his pulse point;  nothing a sweater wouldn’t cover up,  but something she would need to be mindful of in the future.  One more thing,  she supposed.  ❝Mh.  Do you think Clea told him?❞  Do you think they heard?  One moment — she had lost composure for one moment.  A feat in itself,  given how utterly she’d wanted to lose herself in him,  but it remained a speck of worry sitting on the edge of her mind nonetheless.  ❝Verso, it’s … almost eight—…❞

She shifted slightly,  but there was no real weight in her argument.  Lara made no move to loosen her legs around him,  and the more she leaned into the kiss,  the less she cared about the shuffle of footsteps in the hall outside.  All she could feel was his weight on her chest,  snuffing out whatever anxiety still lingered there,  and the warmth of his skin on hers.  ❝Peut être… une de plus.❞

this post is about spiders

I'm scared of spiders just as much as the next guy. I do however, own several of them as pets at this point (hands off, display pets only as my fear keeps me from ever wanting to actually touch one), including a black widow and as of today, a brown recluse. And i know that they're the United States boogey monsters of spiders, but the lack of knowledge around them from the general population is staggering, and im getting kind of tired of it. Every single person in my life has reacted with anger and horror at my perceived stupidity from "Keeping an animal that can and will kill you if given the chance". And very few people are even willing to believe me when I tell them the truth.

Like the fact is that it just isn't true that either spider can kill me. Unless im allergic to them, which would be like winning the lottery (of pain and death), then I as a healthy adult cannot be killed, not even close. I'm not saying they're puppies or anything, they do have a medically significant bite, or more accurately- they can have a medically significant bite. But they can also choose how much venom to deliver in a bite, and they do not want to waste it for something that isn't prey.

Both of these spiders are also incredibly shy, and you have to be actively squishing them to death for them to want to bite at all. If i was bitten by either of these spiders, i would spend an afternoon at the ER, and then go home and for the next few weeks/months (depending on venom amount), i'll be in a good deal of pain while i recover. Is it a walk in the park? absolutely not. But these spiders just.. aren't life threatening. I also don't plan on touching them at all let alone harassing them aggressively enough to get any kind of bite.

ok im going to #seriouspost for a second here. I don't think Harry Potter is a manifesto. I think it was a flawed passion project that millennials latched onto because of the fantasy of sticking it to their mean teachers and arbitrarily categorizing themselves (hogwarts houses; it's the thinking millennial's astrology). I think the fact that the series got popular when and how it did was very much a product of its time.

I don't think Harry Potter is the biggest symbol of JKR's bigotry. I think the most flagrant sign of that was how she responded to critics. I watched her become radicalized in real time. I watched how she doubled down on her racism when she was called out for the ways she promoted her tragically mid fantastic beasts movies. I watched her chase marginalized teenagers with a double digit follower count off of twitter for daring to criticize her thought process, and no one with any kind of power standing against her because she was the one who was paying them. This isn't to say Harry Potter is without flaws. This is to say she really didn't give a shit about that. Getting rich and powerful is a hell of a drug, and she had enough sycophants that she had no reason to care about what her critics were saying.

She was convinced that she was a martyr; a voice for the unheard; a leader for the ages, so of course her detractors were the bad guys. And I think we should take this to heart. We should see this as an example of how easy it is to get radicalized; if you think of yourself as a paragon of virtue, you are going to think that whatever you see as good and right is an objective fact. Most people don't know this, but the majority of terfs start out as trans allies. You are not immune to propaganda! You are not immune to falling into dangerous ideologies!!!

This is why the most important thing you can do as an activist is to listen. Do NOT think you're above being wrong; do NOT develop a god complex; do NOT form an identity out of being right all the time. Involve yourselves in the groups you claim to speak for. Listen to trans women; share resources that help trans women; familiarize yourself with the diversity of experiences that trans people have and the struggles they face.

No, none of you are as bad as JKR because you don't have her money or her power. You will likely never have the capacity for harm she does. But check yourselves. Do not affirm yourselves into thinking you always have the moral high ground. Watch yourselves; humble yourselves; check yourselves for signs of cult behavior and internalized prejudice. You are always learning. You will always be learning. Do not allow yourselves to get a power trip from brushing off marginalized voices.
