1. Most hits Will You Walk With Me? - No surprise here since it's one of my oldest fics, and written when TCW fandom was more active. Not my best fic, but it's my baby. 🥺 Waxer's pov, following him and Boil through the war. 🧡

2. Second most kudos Orbital Decay - 4th highest number of kudos, but two image works came in 1st and 3rd place. Old Codywan.

3. Third most comments Kinktober 2022 - Ah, I'm pleased with this one! It's actually one of my favorite fics I've written, haha. The epitome of 'character develop portrayed through smut.' 😂 Waxer/Boil, of course.

4. Fourth most bookmarks Modulation - 4th was actually Orbital Decay again, so I went to the 5th most bookmarked fic. This is another old one. Echo/Fives.

5. Fifth most words My Heart's Red Muscle - My best longfic, I'd say :) Waxer/Boil but Waxer is a cyborg. (I swear, I wrote this like a year before I even knew what The Murderbot Diaries were, but there are a shocking number of similarities XD)

6. Fewest words Hm, idk how to answer this one since my images don't have words aside from some image descriptions here and there. Then I just have a bunch of drabbles, which are of course 100 words. I guess I'll just go with the first drabble I see that catches my eye 😂 Sooo, how about Burden. Waxer & Boil. Summary: Waxer doesn't want to be one. (a burden)

Most hits Drabble Kinktober 2024 - That one is no surprise, it has a whopping 31 chapters that were released daily, so even if the same number of people read it, the hit count would automatically be a lot higher. And it's a lot of different ships, so maybe it reached different people? Might be that it's smut? Regardless, it has 4.5 times more hits than number two. Loads of ships, drabbles of smut

Second most kudos It's all in the hands - An all time favorite of mine. Dogma and his very specific speech and thought patterns were loads of fun. Dogma learns to knit.

3. Third most comments Hey Brother - Another Dogma fic. That's my first multi-chapter fic I think. Tup and Dogma join the Wolfpack after Umbara.

4. Fourth most bookmarks A Most Important Question - I am sensing a pattern here. Dogma has really taken over this game, hasn't he. This one is very sweet and I like how cozy it is. Dogma has a question for Tup.

5. Fifth most words Zero Unread Messages - I like this one. For as much as it fought me while writing it, I think it was worth the pay off. Boil goes to Umbara for clean up.

6. Fewest words Feather for Feather - Ohhh, that's a sad one. Hics, my precious boy. I really should write him and Pillar again. OC Wing AU

Holy shit, guys, kudos on Bloodlust and Butterflies have skyrocketed in the past week.

It’s been in 3rd place for a while, but I think at this rate, it might surpass my Drarry oneshot, soon? Because no lie, this count has just about doubled since Dad Beat Dad aired. The kudos count was in the 200’s before.

The other fics in The Unholy Trinity are getting notes too. Hell, even Tempting Entertainment – the 2020 precursor to Bloodlust and Butterflies that has terrible pacing – is getting notes. Every day I get my kudos notification email from AO3 and I am blown away by how much love my fics are getting.

Not to mention the huge increase in comments, and my first ever fanart!

Thank you, everyone for your amazing support. I never could’ve dreamed that my silly PWP cannibal kink fic would turn into this. Every kudos, every comment, every bookmark, the fucking fanart – still can’t believe there’s fanart of my fic – it all means the world to me. ❤️

Ao3 statistics are wild. I'm such a mess of a multi fandom writer what do you mean 17 people get an update when I post anything. What are they doing there?

D*stiel shippers would swear that their ship is canon yet still be crying about it three years later. What is funny is them not connecting the dots between having 100K fanfictions and the ship not being canon lol. Do they see actual slow burn like Delena (TVD) or Chair (GG) shippers still crying about their ship being canon or sending anon to blogs trying to prove everyone about it? Off course not because their ship is canon and they get to enjoy every epic scenes, foreshadowing, heartbreaks and reunion ONSCREEN. I was in the TVD fandom and I know for a fact that people go crazy with fanfictions, manips, fan arts and edits when the ship is NOT canon. People try to make up for what they don’t have onscreen/canon and once it become canon the desire for fafics and all decreases because people are satisfied. It’s must suck to always purposely delude themselves and desperately find blogs/panderers/cult who would constantly validate their delusion.  

Exactly! You only ever need to "fix" something that doesn't exist. Don't mind me, but I'm going to venture into the math portion of my response, lol! Obviously, this is a small sampling off of one tag, but I imagine it's a decent representation of SPN works.

If you sort by the Fix-it tag in AO3, there are 7600 total works. Based on that number, 66% have the Destiel tag. And that Dean and Sam number? 413 of those also have the Destiel tag. Remove that and Sam & Dean Fix-it fics only equal 4.6%.

(Oh, and that number for Eileen/Sam fics? All but 48 have the Destiel tag.)

Sam and Dean fans have 327 glorious episodes of brotherly love and codependency that, in large part, requires no fixing. Hellers have to rewrite the entire show in order to make their ship work, and they're too idiotic to see it.

And the answer is that they’re a fun ship! I wouldn’t want anyone who is ship-averse (especially Murderbot ship averse) to accidentally stumble upon a fic they don’t like—but if you’re perhaps “ship curious” this is one that has so much fun stuff going on!

When I first started my interest [what some might call it obsession] with this pairing there wasn’t a lot of fanfic featuring them on AO3, but to my joy this has changed over the last couple of years and there is now a thriving little shipping communities!

2024 in Numbers

In 2023, I planned to write one fic each month. I ended up writing 11 fics, in 2024 and I certainly didn't adhere to any schedule. In total, I wrote 520,153 words in 2024.

Now, the actually interesting thing is that I wrote down the number of kudos on each fic on Sunday (the time varied, but this has a negligible impact). I figured the number of kudos was at least a passable variable for number of different people who reached the end of the first chapter. I'll present the whole thing first:

General Trends:

With comments, I receive comments on a fic within the first two days of a new chapter. When a fic I completed, I will receive comments within the first week. The kudos show a similar trend.

It's near-logarithmic; sharp initial increase that levels out.

There are a few additional rules, which I explain under update frequency.

Omegaverse Fics:

all omegaverse fics are in color:

I already suspected this, but Omegaverse fics perform well. They also have a rather similar slope, despite one being kylux rather than obikin.

Fic Length:

I separate the data in three categories

1-50k fics (blue)

50-70k fics (orange)

70k+ fics (black)

The problem is that a lot of the more recently published fics haven't leveled out yet. Additionally, there's a very good reason for DISLOYAL's numbers, which I'll explain in the next bit.

I don't see a difference between the categories despite feeling that shorter fics generally performed better.

Update Schedule:

Another interesting factor is the update schedule I used. There were four flavors last year:

weekly updates (blue)

Daily updates (orange)

Irregular updates with several chapters posted at once (yellow)

Entire fic in one go (black)

Posting the fic in one go doesn't result in much engagement. Probably because the whole fic is already available. I noticed this already. Weekly updates don't do too well either, though this is the least stressful for me. I already suspected this, too.

It seems releasing several chapters at once or a daily release schedule works best. However, a daily update schedule is extremely stressful. I wanted to step away from it in 2025, but I'll have to reevaluate this decision, it seems.

The Outliers

The good: Speak no Evil: Most kudos. Picking Up Strays: Sharpest increase in kudos, which I didn't notice until I started looking at the data.

The bad: DISLOYAL: posted as a full fic. AUGURY: posted anonymously for a fest. Possibly has a terrible synopsis. In Your Dreams!: I don't know, actually. Either badly written or didn't appeal.

Conclusions:

I will reconsider the update schedule for 2025. My previous poll gave inconclusive results (a 50/50 split) on this matter. I would prefer something less intense than daily updates, but if that's what readers prefer, then I'll shift to daily updates.

More kylux and more omegaverse fics (I was already hoping for this one, so I'm adding this despite the weak evidence that people want this) in 2025.

There's nothing that indicates there's a preference for a particular fic length, so I'll just continue to do my thing there. I really believed people preferred shorter fics based on the comments, but I assume that's only because people don't comment as much on later chapters?

I'll probably continue to record this number because it's interesting to see how it changes over time, and it's little effort.
