Like, there was mild panic for a split second after we confirmed no articles of a possible meteor shower last night and before we realized those were def meteors and not a country seeking vengeance.

Am I the asshole for sleeping with my "surrogate child's" estranged father?

(alksdlgjsdg- this is an inside joke so bare with me for a second /lh)

Hi, I (late 30s - early 40s M) recently have run into a bit of a problem regarding my roomate/"surrogate child" (early 20s NB), lets call them Crown. For context, I have not known Crown for that long, a year or two at most but due to some complicated past events that I don't feel comfortable sharing, we have grown very close to each other. To the point I see them as family.

The issue is that a couple of months ago, Crown moved into my house and set up some old family photos in their room. Now that itselft, isn't a problem, I want them to feel comfortable in their new home but one of those photos is of Crown's old parents, both of whom Crown has a complicated past with.

Yesterday I went into their room to ask what they wanted for dinner and I saw the photo. One of the people in the photo looked very familiar and I asked Crown about it. To my horror, the person in the photo was their estranged father and without thinking, I blurted out, "I think I had a couple of flings with him".

Crown looked at me with a mix of shock, horror, and worse of all, betrayal. They pushed me out of their room and have refused to speak to me since.

I've tried to explain myself, that it happened in the past way before I even met Crown before, but they still won't listen.

So reddit, am I the asshole?

*EDIT* I've gotten a lot of comments about this, so for a bit of context, Crown has told me about their rough history with their father before. He left both them and their mother when they were a kid and hasn't made any contact with them outside of the occasional phone call. Going by this, I would have meet their dad after he had already left his family. We hooked up a couple of times just for fun but I never even thought about starting a relationship with him, doubly sure now that I know about his history with Crown.

I understand how this can be a bit of a shock for Crown though and I do feel sorry that I unintentionally hurt them like this. Any advice on how I can make it up to them?
