I created a Mai plush in the green dress outfit that she wears in the lost adventures comic, and her and Zuko run into Jin. It’s been a hot minute since I read it 😭, BUT I am going to reread it (my mother got rid of all my books so I am currently trying to buy them again as an adult and reread them) (ugh) BUT SLAY she looks so good and I love her so much! When I drew this, I imagined both Zuko and Azula were living with Iroh and Azula just had a middle of the night break down and chopped her hair like she does in the show (except this time she gets support afterward).

She bursts into the hallway where she runs into Zuko who has no clue how to react. Iroh hears the commotion, steps into the hallways and handles it.

The next day he takes her to get her hair cut. Later, the girls have a sleepover and dye her hair (she’s wearing white (funeral colours) during this because it’s the rebirth of her new self 🗣️)

Azula of course acts grumpy and bitter about this, but the last slide is her on her own leaning on the bathroom counter looking in the mirror, happy with the results (she’s also wearing Ty Lee’s clothes because hers got stained with dye).

Blue hair because her fire is blue and I like to think blue is a colour that is more accurately representative of her than the red she starts the story in that represents her family

I decided to combine it with my long-harbored plan of making Mai x Zuko fan art. originally, I wanted to create something elaborate and beautiful, painted with water color. as always, my procrastinating a*s only got around to work on this one day before the deadline, though, so I had to rush and went for the exact opposite. The problem with black hair is you just can't see any of the details 😭 inspiration and influences under the cut, with the usual reminder that there's a lot of nuance and detail missing since these originally came from Instagram slides that I made:

A Bit of Background:

The Fire Nation is visually and geographically inspired by volcanic islands such as Iceland, Hawaii and Polynesian islands, while the culture of the Fire Nation is primarily inspired by East, South and Southeast Asia, as well as sun-worshipping cultures (such as the Ancient Egyptians and Mesoamericans). For example:

the Confucian concept of ‘filial piety’ (孝顺 or ‘xiao shun’) is central to the Fire Nation too;

the agni kai is a form of honour duel commonly seen in warrior societies of South Asia, and literally translates as ‘Duel of Fire’ or ‘Fire Quarrel’;

the Fire Nation propaganda justifying the war is reminiscent of the Japanese Empire during the Second World War;

the architecture draws on that of Ancient Egypt, different Chinese dynasties, and historic Southeast Asian kingdoms;

the food typically resembles the Sichuan food, particularly in the spiciness and quantities of meat.

Fire Nation Clothing:

The clothing of the Fire Nation draws from many East and Southeast Asian clothing. For example, the armour the military wears has influences from traditional Thai armour, the shoulder pieces the Royal Family wears come from Burmese court wear, the school uniforms are inspired by traditional Thai clothing, and the Royal Family's top knot appear to come from Qin Dynasty China.

The Royal Court are often seen wearing changshan, a traditional clothing of the Han Chinese, although that is not the only influence. For example, Azula's skirt comes from the wraparound trousers worn in Laos, Cambodia and Thailand, while Ty Lee and Toph's jewellery comes from the Thai mongkut.

My Design:

For Mai's design, I took inspiration primarily from the Han Chinese ruqun (襦裙) outfit. I was draw to it because I think it nicely mimics the shape of Mai's original outfit. However, I also think the history of the attire ties into Mai's sorry. The outfit has been worn for thousands of years and it's the traditional attire of Han Chinese women. As someone who was trained to be the “perfect” daughter, I feel Mai would have a few of these kinds of outfits in her wardrobe (though she would, of course, also smuggle knives into any event).

I embellished Mai's outfit with balsamine flowers. They are associated with the Chinese phoenix (fenghuang or 鳳凰), which are considered the yin to the Chinese dragon's yang. Traditionally, they were reserved for the Empress in the same way the dragon was associated with the Emperor. In this way, I think the flowers hint at Zuko and Mai's relationship.

I made Mai (again) because I’ve been struggling so bad mentally. Mai is such an important character to me, because she is a character I bonded with my sister with, and my sister is so far away from me (we are twins) (she moved away and lives on her own) I struggle thinking of our childhood and wishing to go back in time. We loved Mai, the Fire Nation, and fighting over her together lol. We both aspired to be her, and we just like ahhh. We loved her. We would draw Mai, and my sister made a Mai doll, that I would try and take from her 24/7 but it wasn’t until my 26th birthday she gave her to me…. (She made it when she was 12… and it is honestly the most perfect doll ever) I made various versions of my own Mai, and this is the latest edition. She has 3D buns, a mostly sewn outfit and a matching bracelet with her Mai twin (my twin sisters Mai) I love Mai and I’m so glad my twin and I loved Mai and that my best friend from my childhood inspired us to sew! Without my sister and my childhood best friend. I wouldn’t have done this and become so happy with it. Although none of my work is for sale (I’m disabled and can’t interfere with my income), I enjoy sharing my artwork from an artist stand point. I’m so happy although I had cried missing my sister and my best friend so much. These are the little things that help 🖤❤️♾️ in Mai we trust!
