It's Time to Put Hitler to Bed

Over the last 20 years it's become increasingly common when talking about western politics to try and tie the political opposition to Hitler. It goes beyond Godwin's Law at this point, because it's no longer just in internet phenomenon. It happens in real life. In real conversations and real debates. All sides do it. No issue is safe. And it's beyond ridiculous at this point. It needs to stop.

So let's just stop talking about Hitler altogether when it comes to western politics.

He's dead. He's gone. His ideology died with him. Yes, you read that right. National Socialism is dead. It was a very specific ideology with goals and aims beyond being racist and hating Jews. Nowhere on Earth is there a serious National Socialist party with any political power or any chance at gaining any. Modern day neo-nazis are nothing more than edgelord racists desperately trying to grab some of the "shine" Hitler has with other idiots for themselves. They're awful. They're racist. They should grow the fuck up. But they aren't nazis. They aren't storming government buildings and they aren't winning political office. Most of them aren't even committing crimes. They're just sitting online or in a basement somewhere snort-laughing like Bevis and Butthead while they whisper "k*ke" and "n*gger" to each other and post pictures of ovens with captions like "where the Jews go". How basic and boring. They are beyond lame, and it's long past time we stop bigging these people up like they're some huge existential threat to humanity itself. They're not. They're just pathetic losers who have no power over anyone, not even themselves.

Does this mean we should forget the Holocaust? No. Of course not. We should always remember what Hitler did. But if we don't take the right lessons from that dark era in human history, then we might as well forget it because misremembering, on purpose or by accident, is just as bad as forgetting.

Hitler was an evil man who did evil things. He is a cautionary tale to never let rhetoric overwhelm your better nature. He is a warning of what happens when you give into hate out of fear or anger. But that's it. He does not influence anyone with power. Not in the west. No one in the west is actually trying to be like Hitler. And as evil as Hitler was, not everything he did was automatically evil just because he did it. And that right there is the main problem with the modern trend of accusing everyone you don't like of being Hitler. Hitler did a lot of things. He woke up. He ate breakfast. He fell in love. He breathed air. He got dressed. He gave speeches. He liked art. He was a human being. I don't say this to downplay the evil things he did or to try and create sympathy for him. But surely you can easily see how literally every single person on Earth has something in common with Hitler just by virtue of also being a human being, yes?

Hitler was also a politician. Which means that, yeah, every politician is going to have a position that's at least similar to something Hitler proposed or enacted in his political career. His views and platforms ranged far and contain things that are both left and right wing. Things which, in the hands of someone other than Hitler, most likely would not have led to the Holocaust. Because the Holocaust is an evil that was unique to Hitler. He baked genocide into his ideology, then codified and streamlined it after gaining power. His was a cold and inhumane calculation that only the Aryan race as he defined it was worthy of life. That every other race, everyone who didn't fit his idea of purity, must be killed to preserve his Master Race. There have been other genocides before and since, but none quite as industrialized and far reaching. And, in the west at least, there is no one with any power who wants to reenact anything that even comes close to the Holocaust. Not even that politician you really hate. Not even that activist group that promotes that awful ideology.

All accusations of being Hitler, or like Hitler, do is muddy the already opaque waters of modern western political discourse. And people are so bored with Hitler comparisons. He doesn't evoke the same emotional reaction he did even 20 years ago because, by this point, everyone even remotely active in western politics or political commentary knows someone who has been accused of being Hitler or a nazi, if they aren't that person themselves. It's become little more than the (supposedly) adult version of "I know you are but what am I?" It's meaningless, it's dumb, and everyone needs to stop doing it.

Stop making posts about how so and so is just like Hitler. Stop re-tweeting/blogging/posting them. Stop bringing Hitler's name into discourse at all. Stop arguing about whether or not National Socialism is right or left wing. Stop pretending that superficial similarities to Hitler or one of Hitler's policies is absolute proof that an ideological opponent is evil.

Aro- and Ace-Spectrum Murderbot Diaries headcanons

For the beginning of Aromantic Awareness Week, I thought I’d write out some of my a-spec headcanons for TMBD characters!

Murderbot: its opinions on romance and sex range from “I didn’t give a shit about [it]” to “No!” to “No, no thank you, no. No.” This one’s not a headcanon these are all direct quotes haha.

ART: Because of its limited socialization and its only very recent introduction to deeply feeling the things depicted when watching media, I have a hard time imagining ART conceptualizing romance as something it would want or has any reason to want. Its articulation of closeness, commitment, devotion, and duty is crew. I think upon meeting Murderbot, it kind of got friendship for the first time. But Murderbot is also very much part of crew now as well. I don’t see it feeling the need to add romance to that emotional-relationship framework. It’s adventurous with experiences, though, especially with things it might consider gaps in its knowledge; it may be willing to try certain types of intimacy, experience, or sensation out of curiosity.

Three: Still very new to the freedom to name and articulate its feelings and desires, let alone take initiative to act on them when they involve other people. It had a weird and unique kind of closeness with its squadmates: you’re the only one I can trust. We can’t ever trust each other. You understand me. We aren’t allowed to talk about it. Our communications are closely monitored and limited. We know what the limits are and how to express ourselves within them. I care about you. I want you to be safe. Three wouldn’t call it romance but wouldn’t know what to call it at all besides squadmates. If Three identified as anything it would be quoiromantic, quoisexual, quoi-everything: how can it fit its experiences into a framework of sexuality and romanticism.

Ratthi: Aromantic allosexual with a strong belief in relationship anarchy. Takes the viewpoint of, every one of his relationships is different because every person is different! Hierarchizing them or categorizing them is kind of beside the point! Every relationship, family or friend or colleague or coauthor or person he knows from board game night or sexual partner, is something special. Though the most important people in his life include his best friends Arada and Overse, and they consider each other family.

Gurathin: Aromantic asexual. Limited social energy. Spends a lot of time quiet and alone and likes it that way. A few strong friendships, a few work friends, a few scientific colleagues, a cat.

Pin-Lee: Gray-aroace. Romance, dating, or sex is not a particular priority she wants to spend time pursuing, and she gets an uncomfortable stomach-churning feeling if she feels like she’s being expected to tie herself down to a relationship too fast. There’s a lot about her work and her goals and her life she’s not willing to compromise on. If her friendship with Bharadwaj or Mensah became something more squishy and boundary-blending, she wouldn’t be opposed, but she won’t actively pursue it either.

Arada: Demisexual lesbian. Ideal family household is her wife and her best friend.

Volescu: Aromantic heterosexual. The aro allo het man that tumblr warned you about~ Devoted father and husband. Comes from a culture where marriage and romantic desire are a venn diagram of optional overlap more so than a necessary expectation. (This dovetails with my Divarti political refugee backstory headcanon because as you may have noticed I am going full My City Now at this point)

it kind of started when i listened to some of the sky sports podcasts where they were talking about the mclaren team orders situation. and i found what jenson said versus what nico said to be very interesting.

jenson was defending mclaren's policy of just letting their drivers fight it out on track, arguing that the racing was what the sport was supposed to be about. but then when nico was asked about it (on a different episode) he argued that mclaren should be using team orders to help lando because the point of the championship was to win, and you have to take every advantage you have because you don't know if or when you're going to get another chance.

and it made total sense to me that each of them was making that particular argument given who each of them is. jenson's whole thing is racecraft, he has such a unique driving style and was so admired for his racecraft even when he wasn't the fastest driver that it made sense for him to value the actual racing element above anything else. when he was talking about the team orders and mclaren's history of not issuing team orders, he said that he and lewis took wins off of each other, and if they'd been given team orders one of them probably could have won a championship [during the vettel/red bull dominance years]. but i think jenson could only say that because he already got his fairytale championship in 2009, and because he has canada 2011 to his name. if he didn't have those, particularly the wdc, i think he would look at his mclaren years very differently. and although jenson beat lewis across a season, lewis was overall the stronger driver, and if mclaren had given team orders, it's quite likely jenson would have been the one ordered to help lewis rather than the other way around. so in that sense, mclaren not having team orders and prioritising the "racing" helped jenson out a lot.

equally i think it makes total sense that nico values the winning over the racing. he spent a very long time being a very good driver in very bad cars, and when he finally got a good car, he had to face off against the most successful driver of all time. so it makes sense that the racing is not enough for nico, because it was never enough to be good, or even great, it was important to win. all of the effort he put in, the extremes he went to were not about becoming a better racer, they were about winning, and being able to call himself a champion. since retiring he's said that the only part of formula one he missed was winning, and although he's remained a part of the racing world, he's never raced again, unlike jenson who has raced in multiple other series. in the end it was the winning that fulfilled nico, and once he had that, he felt able to explore other worlds. additionally, i think nico's insecurities/self-esteem issues really affect this. he said in an interview that he didn't believe in himself at all throughout his career. while other drivers have talked about the need to view themselves as the best driver, and believe that given the right circumstances they can be champion, nico talked about how he never believed that, and so the thing that kept him going was his commitment to it. he committed to that championship 100% because he believed in the value of it. and that's why i think he argued that mclaren should have given team orders to help lando because he believes in the inherent value of a championship and of winning, and believes that you should commit to that, even if you don't win, rather than hoping the win comes to you.

there are some drivers that talk about racing as a priority and some that talk about winning as a priority, and i think it's interesting to see which is which, and why they've come to that conclusion. and with charles specifically, i think it would be incredibly interesting to see him choose between winning with anyone for the sake of winning over the possibility of winning with ferrari because of the ferrari of it all. what matters more to him, a championship, or a potential championship with ferrari?

Luca is fascinated by Leo’s swords and mask, trying to grab them every chance he gets

Leo’s always one step ahead, gently redirecting his nephew while muttering, “No, buddy, you’re too young for ninjutsu.”

Aria is Raph’s little daredevil

The moment he holds her, she giggles when he lifts her up high and twirls her around gently

She loves the excitement, and Raph is more than happy to be the fun uncle who gets her to laugh the loudest

Raph’s all about making her tough, jokingly flexing in front of her and saying “You’re gonna be strong, just like your uncle.”

But in reality, he’s super soft around her, calling her his "little champ."

Eli and Nova instantly bond with Mikey

He’s the master at making them laugh, whether it's through his silly voices or doing exaggerated impressions of his brothers

Mikey is great at calming them down when they’re fussy. He’ll rock them gently and hum goofy songs, always finding ways to make even diaper changes into a game

He’s already planning fun future adventures for them, saying, “We’ll have art sessions, guys! And a lot of pizza parties!”

He’s the most laid-back uncle and the kids love him for it

Tarot Card Headcanons for Leverage & Leverage Redemption

I've seen a couple of posts floating around trying to assign cards to Leverage characters, and I thought I'd take a whack at it as a student of tarot!

Tarot cards represent archetypes, and each card has a "reversed" meaning. A reversed card results when one draws the card upside down, which indicates a perversion of sorts from the card's original meaning, which I have decided to put to use when choosing cards to describe our lovely team. None of this is meant to hole anyone in to one archetype because everyone on the crew contains multitudes, but I'll try to look at this with as big a picture lens as I can.

Imagery is important to tarot, so I'm including the three main decks to show their depictions of each archetype: Rider-Waite, Marseilles, and Thoth. You've maybe seen decks with nicer, more diverse imagery, but we'll use the older decks to reference the centuries-old imagery there.

Hardison: The Magician

This is a card about pure manifestation and willpower. The Magician wields all four suits of the tarot and contains within them infinite possibilities.

Hardison: In a single day, I've gone from apprentice to journeyman to master.

Hardison is a master of invention. A lot of the things he wants to do don't exist yet, so he just makes them happen. No one in the world does what he does.

Eliot: The Hanged Man

This is a card all about sacrifice. The Hanged Man rests upside down, a sign of how we need to surrender to move forward.

Sophie: You told me that fighting is about control, about knowing that you'll never going to be the victim. Eliot: learned a long time ago that you can't control the violence, I can take the punishment. It's what I do. What I need to control is not out there, it's here [in my chest], always.

Eliot's also a man who decided a long time ago that he's damned because of all the evils he's committed. But that doesn't stop him from working to do the right thing, relentlessly, every day. The world looks different when one is upside down. His unique perspective helps cover the team's blind spots.

Sophie: The High Priestess

The High Priestess represents the quality of the divine feminine. A being of the night, she works with intuition, mystery, unconsciousness, and one's inner voice, which is right up Sophie's alley. I would argue that Sophie spends the first two seasons of Leverage (and likely most of her life) as the High Priestess reversed, which represents hidden motives, repressed intuition, and cognitive dissonance. Sophie at her lowest doesn't know who she is. She's lost internally, and she can't function well until she fixes that.

When the High Priestess turns within and looks upon her own truth, she becomes unstoppable in matters of her profession and matters of her own heart.

Nate: The Devil (ultimately reversed)

I cycled through a few cards for him, but I settled on The Devil. Stick with me here.

The Devil chains people, representing how we can all be shackled to our vices, addictions, and consuming emotions. And Nate is indeed chained - to the narrative of his father, to his corporate lifestyle, to the horrifying death of his son at the hands of his own company.

Nate is driven by that which is slowly killing him: his rage, his drinking, the ability to control. When he starts working jobs with the team, he becomes less of a puppet and more of a puppeteer.

Reversed, this card represents a breaking of the chains, a hard-won and gritty freedom. And that's a lot what Nate is like at the end of Leverage. This would make Nate being the only person in this set who is moving towards a reversed version of the card rather than upright, and that feels on theme for the honest man who becomes a thief.

Parker: The World

Parker gets the final card of the major arcana and the completion of all. It is a card about being in complete and dynamic harmony with everything around them. Leverage is a story about Nate, but it's also a story about Parker. It's how she becomes a mastermind and leader of the battle against corruption that's happening worldwide.

Reversed, The World is restless and feels incomplete. Upright, this card represents belonging. Parker finding where she belongs and then using that ability to help others is such an important part of her story in the show.

Tara: The Chariot

(Because she's one of the crew, always.)

With pure cardinal energy, the Chariot drives everything forward. It's ambition and determination and self-discipline. Reversed, it's forceful and aggressive with no direction.

Tara's momentum is always forward, and she always moves in the most direct path towards her goals. On a meta level, she moves the story forward when Sophie's away, and moves the story back to Sophie when it's time.

Breanna: Strength

The strength card shows a person in danger from the forces of nature - but does it? A second look shows that this person has developed an interesting relationship with danger, showing attentiveness or even compassion.

Upright, Strength is courageous, compassionate, and brave. In reversal, Strength doubts themself and feels inadequate. Breanna felt the need to come out of the shadow of her brother when she first joined the team, but in time, she became much more comfortable with her own robust skillset.

In a lot of ways, Breanna represents how the world has changed since the original series. Things have gotten worse, and Breanna grew up only knowing that worse world. We don't know what Breanna is becoming, but we have hints showing that it's going to be someone with the best qualities of the Strength card.

Harry: Justice (called Adjustment in the Thoth deck)

This may seem a bit on-the-nose, but hear me out. We know that what is legal is often not what is just. Reversed, the Justice card is full of corruption and dishonesty, much like Harry is during most of his professional life.

Upright, we can look at Justice as representing accountability but also karma. The best version of Harry acknowledges that he has done harm and is committed to fixing it, even though he may never fully repair the damage that he has done. Harry's calling is indeed the law, if the show is any indication. But how he's going to wield it in the future? What will he become? That's the journey we're on with him.

I don't think it's just that; I think more and more people are realizing that every child deserves a mother and a father and legalizing gay marriage deliberately deprives a kid of one of them. Orphans and children of single parents always long for their missing parents.

While there are unfortunate circumstances like death of a parent or divorcing an abusive spouse that makes it inevitable, ultimately since children are made through the biological union of a man and woman, their spiritual relationship with them should be preserved.

Since we're not just a material being, we're also of both body and soul. Not Cartesian dualism but Hylomorphism where the union of body and soul makes one nature.

The only two ways a gay couple can have a baby is either through surrogacy and/or adoption. Along with its ethical concerns with buying a baby, a gay couple taking a newly born baby from his/her mother is depriving that child with the much needed bonding time with the mother (i.e. breastfeeding, cuddling, etc). It's illegal to sell a puppy within 8 weeks of birth because it would be too cruel to separate it from its mother,* then how much more devastating would it be when it comes to a human child? And a child's need for a mother doesn't stop when he/she no longer needs to be breastfed, the mother is essential for the child's emotional maturity as well.

Veilguard Character Appreciation: Lucanis Dellamorte

As mentioned on my Emmrich, Taash, & Davrin posts, this is a very self indulgent post for me to ramble about things that I appreciated about the companion characters in Veilguard. I'm planning to post one per character, loosely following the order of the Veilguard Appreciation Week prompts! Please feel free to reply or reblog with your own thoughts if you are so inclined c:

So, with complete honesty, I was convinced I was going to dislike Lucanis. I hadn't read Tevinter Nights and all I really knew about him was that he was called the mage-killer and I was so worried he was going to be this like, extremely intense, broody dude that you'd have to convince that magic was not evil - which thinking back now, I think I was just expecting Fenris 2.0, Crow Edition, haha, and one Fenris is enough in the world. Fenris already took awhile to grow on me, and I've never been hugely a Crow fan, so the combination just didn't seem like my cup of tea.

What we got was absolutely not that. And I honestly was really pleased with Lucanis from the moment I saw him. Firstly, I did not actually expect him to be possessed, but I'll admit that instantly made him 100x more interesting to me. I do think his character stands on his own and would have eventually grown on me regardless, but it was still a really interesting choice.

I think he started to warm on me fully with the way he just so fully commits to taking care of everyone at the Lighthouse. The first quest with him where you walk around Treviso to buy things for everyone and it's just a perfect example of how he notices little things about everyone, it was really well done and it really showed how observant he is - obviously something that means he's good at his job, but also meaning that he manages to find his place at the Lighthouse really quickly.

And yet at the same time he stayed so purposefully separated because of Spite, and that's super interesting to me too. I love how they managed to create yet another character who's possessed without copying any of the things they've done before. Spite and Lucanis have a unique relationship, and the way that they play off of each other reveals so much about each of them.

Like the way that Lucanis sacrifices his own well-being by not sleeping, both because he seems so deeply uncomfortable with Spite controlling him and also to protect the people around him - I mean, I know how much sleep deprivation can affect you, and it's amazing how Lucanis didn't start struggling even more than what's shown in game. But even despite that, he's so hard on himself, and so devoted to the way of the Crows even as he finds out so many things that tied him to them are falling apart.

I love how gentle he can be, with everyone but himself, what with the quiet care he shows through cooking and gifts that just show he noticed. I love how you got to go into the Fade to get to see all the things that were obvious just by looking at him but that he desperately didn't want Rook to know about, and how it turned out that Spite just wanted to free him from his guilt all along.

I also am really, really glad how much they didn't lean into the whole "mage-killer" thing, because I could've seen that going sideways so easily. He has every reason to hold a grudge against mages and blood magic and yet mostly turns his ire on the people who harmed him directly, the job he's been hired for, and well, himself. It makes him such an interesting character to me.

I haven't finished his romance yet, but he was definitely one of the characters who moved most quickly from "I am pretty sure I won't like you" to "oh wow, I need to get to know you right now", just by how damn quietly charming he is.

You fail your psych eval.

You tell the mental health officer about the dark thoughts you’ve been having, the nights you close your eyes and you see the faces of your targets right before their heads explode, a symptom of your bullet.

They should sign you off on leave, restrict you to a desk but they don’t instead they deploy you, rubber stamping the documentation with a pass because your country needs you, it always needs you and that’s the problem, the constant unrelenting barrage of obligation.

“You need to sleep.” Brock says the evening before the deployment, his lips brushing over your temple. “You’ve barely been to bed these last couple of nights.”

You’re sitting at the kitchen table, your sniper rifle laid out in front of you as you clean each individual piece with a thoroughness that borders on pathological behaviour.

“I don’t like what I see.” You say quietly, your eyebrows furrowed as you focus on oiling the barrel of the weapon. “When I close my eyes.”

He slips down into the seat across from you, his expression one of concern as he studies you.

“How long has that been going on?” He asks you and you set the barrel down before you pick up the stock.

“Weeks, maybe months.” You say despond. “I told them at my last eval, the solution’s the same as it always is, deployment.”

It’s happened before then. Brock understands in that moment, what you are to the Army. A tool to be used, one that fractures with every single task until it breaks, shattering into a thousand tiny pieces.

“You can’t go.” He tells you, his voice a harsh whisper. “Flo, you can’t make that deployment tomorrow, not if your head’s not in it. You’ll get yourself killed…”

“It’s part of the job isn’t it?” You say as you start to reassemble the weapon. “You know that as well as anyone.”

Every click is a harsh echo that vibrates through the room, another precursor to the hit he knows that’s coming if he lets you leave tomorrow morning.

“Flo, I can’t let you go.” He says, his hands coming to rest on yours stilling your movements, forcing the rifle back down onto the table. “You know that don’t you?”

You look at him then and there’s nothing in those eyes of yours, just a deep, fathomless darkness that seeps into the very depths of his soul. That’s how he knows the choice he’s about to make, it’s the right one, the one that’s going to save your life.

“If you have me committed, my career is done. They’ll never let me pick up a rifle again.” You tell him and Brock searches your gaze looking for any flicker of emotion at the thought.

“Is that what you want?” He asks you as you release your grasp on the weapon, setting it down for the last time. “For all of this to be over?”

“Yes.” You say. “I think I’m done.”

So when he comes back from the encounter with Dr. Soong, he is the Data version of really excited to tell you that he is, in fact, not less perfect than Lore

As soon as Data starts referring to you as his partner, the whole crew is invested in the nature of your relationship

Riker and Troi get it the most since they have a similarly unique relationship with each other, just with very different parameters (a lot more sexual and romantic attraction involved)

Still, since Riker thinks A LOT about sex and romance,e he asks you and Data a thousand questions about what your relationship is like before he gets it. He wants to know all the details and is a bit disappointed when there are no spicy ones, since he is pretty much a gossip girl

Vulcan crew members do not bat an eye since their concept of T'hy'la is not limited to romantic partners but includes all kinds of love, and I imagine the Betazoid „Imzadi“ to be similar

I like to imagine that QPRs are a well-known relationship type in Star Trek since it’s the future, but canon doesn’t give that away, so I‘ll leave the human crewmembers' reactions out

Psych Critical

This post is highly related to this post, and I hope you'll read both. This was written second.

I've sent a couple asks to anti psych blogs talking about my own situation.

My goal isn't to change their minds, but to see what options they think are available to my family. Not every attempt at communication is an attack on a stance. I have real questions.

If there are other options, I'd love to hear them. I want these options to exist. I want more than what my family is going to get.

However, no one has responded to my asks. Maybe they think it's bait and I'm trying to catch them in a trick, maybe they don't know the answer, maybe they don't care (if you're one of those blogs, you've forfeited an opinion on my life).

So I'm going to post, under my own name, and ask again.

This isn't bait. This is my life, my every day normal. This is my father's life, every single day.

Psych Critical is a stance that I don't have a choice in. The psych system is only one thing that my family will turn to for help, and if we don't approach it first, it'll approach us on less kind circumstances. And that's genuinely what we're looking for.

Help.

And I think blanket generalizations like the above are about as useful as trash. I shouldn't have to hate myself and my family for needing help and seeking it out.

My father has something called NF (Neurofibromatosis). You might know this as "elephant man disease," though these are distinct disorders that are different from each other. It's the easiest way to describe it, though. He has tumors all over his body, inside and out, in his case. Visible lumps all over his body.

Unfortunately, these tumors are also on his brain. This causes him to have seizures, strokes, hallucinate, and have bouts of violence towards anyone and everyone. Specifically concerning is the voice of God telling him to punish his (now adult) children, and threatening to harm people based on the colour of their skin and religion. These hallucinations likely stem from the fact that he was raised as an orphan in the church (yes, it's exactly what you think).

There was a time when he could have gotten treatment, but we're past that. Initially, he refused. He was scared, I'm sure he didn't think it would end up like this. Now, he's unable to consent to treatment, and it's so progressed that surgery isn't an option. Chemo never was. To make matters worse, he's an alcoholic, to the point that not drinking will cause seizures and will likely result in death. Not to mention the damage to his liver that's slowly killing him. It's not functioning well these days.

There is no POA or will, and he's not able to consent to signing either. He will not go to any doctors at this point. You can't even have a conversation about this with him. Every plan he's set up on, retirement, pension, disability-- he calls them constantly to fuck around with it, cancel it, take his children's names off it, tell them he doesn't need it. They've stopped talking to him and will only discuss with my mother, despite there being no POA in place.

He is only going to get worse. He is going to die, and he doesn't understand.

My father is already dead. The man that raised me is gone, the man that cared isn't in that head anymore. It's a cruel soul using his body like a puppet until it finally gives out.

At this point... my siblings, mother, and I have had to cut him out of our lives. He's mean. He's so goddamn mean and cruel. His words cut harder than his fists, only because there's nothing left to him. He's skin and bones.

I don't know how much longer my cousin can let him stay there. Then what?

At some point, he will need to be forcibly committed and treated, if only to make him comfortable during his final... years? Months? Days? Because of the unique circumstances, there's likely not a drug that can help curb any of the symptoms. Drugs might be able to get him off the alcohol, but he's not going to like that at all, and that's not what's causing the hallucinations. His memory only gets worse by the day. Simple daily things like using the stove are becoming more of a danger, because he keeps walking away and forgetting.

I have about as much choice in this as he does, and the sooner he's committed, the better for everyone, including him. I mean, he can continue to stay out, and pass out on the streets trying to get home from the bar after getting kicked out for starting fights or getting angry when he's cut off. I don't know if or when he's going to forget the way home, and even if I try not to care... I'm scared.

I fear the day he's picked up by the police. I want him in the legal system even less than the psych system, and I think he'll fight any police that try to approach him. This is a man that, I promise you, would rather be homeless than denied alcohol.

This is not my biological father. He came into my life when I was only 1 year old. My biological father was, surprise surprise, also an alcoholic. He was in a drunk driving accident before I was born that killed other people. He was the driver.

My step dad, the only dad I've ever known, scares me sometimes.

I don't want to be the child of two murderers.

So I ask again, what do you suggest? How is this ableist? Your focus is psychotic people, but that's not the only people in these facilities. That's not the only disease that they treat. I read a couple posts from a linked resource (it's tumblr posts, let's not lie), and one of them mentioned something akin to outpatient treatment. @trans-axolotl because I'm using your post. I actually appreciate the "I don't know" of your answer.

It's a lot better than, "you're ableist for even thinking about this."

Friendos, I don't have a choice but to think about this.

This seemed silly to me, though, because psych wards already act like that. Many of the patients leave during the day to work, shop and visit family, and return at night. Rinse and repeat for them, every day. There's a surprising amount of individualized treatment, freedoms, and steps for each patient.

But not everyone can adhere to that. If my dad got out during the day, he would be drinking, and this would exacerbate the symptoms. He's a dick when he's drunk on the best of days. It's why my mother divorced him originally, before the hallucinations started.

A dry house wouldn't work, either. The places this man has hidden alcohol... he's like a squirrel, it's just everywhere, and he comes across them like,

Inside the WALLS, my guys. Hidden in the basement, the wall goes up to uncovered beams and there's a gap, and he hides them down behind those walls.

Do you know how many spiders are in there? He can fucking drink them, he wins that battle. Touché, dad.

When they tear the house down in the far future, I'm willing to bet they'll find a full liquor store down there. And again, the first time someone says, "you can't bring that in here," he'll turn around and say, "then I'm not going in there, diddles," because his fucking language part of the brain is broken and no matter how many times you explain that "diddle" is a CSA word that you can't just use randomly like that, he forgets.

When I first got married, I had him over to my apartment to spend a few nights. The amount of alcohol that got into my house... I don't even think he brought boxers, just alcohol, and it ended in a fight, and I made him leave. After that, he refused to come visit me. He's never been to my sibling's homes. It was the final straw for me, the things he said to my husband are unforgivable. I keep watch from afar now, talking to my cousin about him.

I said a few paragraphs up that the man that cared is gone. Sometimes, I look back, and I'm reminded of all the doubts growing up that he ever really cared. But I still care, and loving him is painful. The fear of what he's going to do next is even worse.

I want to finish this off with one of my... I don't want to say favorite, but this documentary was one that helped me, a fair bit, when it came out. I'd genuinely like the opinions of anti psych people on this documentary, and the true extent of violence and self harm that some patients display. Heavy trigger warning for severe self harm and violence toward others. Obviously.

For some of these patients, do you see another option for treatment? If not psych wards, what do you suggest happens to some of the patients in the video? What role did the staff actually play in some of the events portrayed?

As a general reminder, this isn't to change minds but open dialogue.

"Psych crits are ableist," is a pretty harsh statement considering the number of people in similar positions to myself. I feel like there's a huge disregard and ignorance for the violence that real people are experiencing.

Again, I'm psych critical, I don't accept the system as it is now, I think there's many improvements to be made. I think there is a need, in a very not small number of cases, for this type of system. I understand and appreciate the intersection of race, poverty and mental health that leads to anti psych sentiments, and I agree. There is a large number of people in psych wards that shouldn't be. This needs to be addressed.

But how do you reconcile both? I can't figure it out. I don't know.

You have a very unique view of Batman/Bruce Wayne. Could you elaborate on why?

Sure! Get ready for a long rant, although I will try my best to shorten my thoughts.

My first exposure to the character came from BTAS when I was a child. Even then his character had fascinated me, but I've never quite understood why. As someone who has now grown up with him and consumed Batman media all my life, I can absolutely say that he is one of the best-crafted characters in fiction, especially if we are talking about superheroes as a whole.

Why? Well, it's all in how he chooses to go about defeating evil.

To truly combat evil, you need to understand it. You need to allow yourself to become evil but in a controlled way. It's not enough to just be a good citizen to rid an entire city of corruption and crime - as a good citizen you're harmless, you're not virtuous. You have to incorporate a darker side of yourself and hone it to become virtuous, because if you're a monster and you do not act like one, that is virtuous.

Batman is a man with the potential for tremendous evil, but he is also a good man, a rare mix you don't often see in fiction. He is a union of both the darker aspects of humanity and the brighter.

To further expand on that, I'd like to incorporate Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical theory on morality; "Fear is the mother of morality."

Each and every one of us has thought of doing something morally abhorrent once or twice, yet we stopped ourselves out of fear of what the consequences might be. That is the core of his critique against morality and it is a pretty good one, as people past the point of caring for those consequences find it easier to commit terrible crimes.

The same cannot be said for Batman. He is a vigilante operating outside of the law, no one can trace him, he cannot be sued and he manages to evade the police each and every time. He has the freedom to do whatever he wants to with no consequences. And yet, he still limits himself. He upholds a strict moral code because he believes that even the darkest parts of humanity can be redeemed. It's why he can face off against the worst things imaginable, but still be able to hold a child's dying hand to make her last moments seem more bearable. It's why he can do the same thing for the man who killed his parents.

Batman doesn't take the easy way out, he takes the right path over and over again no matter how hard it is to navigate through it.

And you can classify it as madness when it drives him to rescue and help even his most terrible of villains but in a way you cannot deny that no one believes in humanity as much as Batman does. No one faces off against the most rotten people and still manages to see that there could be something, even a shred of good, inside them.

And that is what makes him much more interesting and fascinating than any other anti-hero or superhero. He isn't a perfect man, but he also never gives up and reverts to killing simply because it is the easier choice.

my dear @auriette was asking about my non-skz kpop feelings, and i have so many of them, so i thought it would be fun to make a little playlist.

i love them. They are super funny on social media, and their music is incredible. Screaming this song at the top of my lungs fixes me a little every time. Woosung is also a soloist and he's amazing.

i am obsessed with OOO. they are incredible. they do most of their own choreo, they committed to making their MVs queer af and include messages of acceptance and support for the lgbtq community in the notes for all their videos. they paired themselves up and talk about kissing each other casually.

and they back it all up with high concept MVs, insane choreo, and great music that will absolutley get stuck in your head. picking a song was hard, but this choreo is too iconic

kard is the only mixed gender kpop group i know of, and we need more.

they are all adults, and their music and MVs are, too. killer dancey tracks. their friendship is a lot of fun.

BM is also a soloist, and has some very explicit horny songs that don't bother with the (barely) innuendo that kard plays with. he's also hilarious on SM, and on the daebak show

No, you won't be able to pursue the boss if you reject his marriage proposal.

If you're asking if you'll be able to romance the idol, best friend, or grim reaper after you agree to the marriage proposal, then the answer is no. However, after agreeing to the marriage proposal, you may encounter other potential love interests but you won't get as many chances to flirt/date them.

I love this question because it merits a (much) longer explanation of the game's structure, written below!

Generally speaking, IF novels have just one overarching plot that they consistently return to regardless of the reader's decisions. For example, even if the reader makes a major choice that greatly affects what scenes they experience, they will still "live" in the same world and probably meet the same characters regardless.

However, this game doesn't just have one "overarching plot"; it has multiple. In this case, it's better to imagine the game as a collection of smaller IF novels, rather than one giant IF novel.

Now, the reason why you can't romance the boss AND the grim reaper, or the best friend AND the idol, is because they don't exist in the same novel. Each main love interest is assigned to a unique storyline, which does not overlap with others (the boss is an exception, but I'll explain why). Think of every route as its own standalone K-drama, with its own main love interests, settings, side characters, plot points, etc.

The game is structured like a K-drama: one chapter = one episode. Usually, the first episode is used to provide some exposition on the main character, love interest, setting, etc. It is also where a major plot point happens, propelling the story to move in a certain direction.

Likewise, the game's first chapter will be written in the same way, and the "major plot point" that happens will be the reader deciding which route they want to commit to. This means that every route will share the same "pilot" first episode, but after that, it will diverge into its own storyline.

To "unlock" a route and commit to it, there are certain major decisions you have to make in-game (and there will be plenty of opportunities to change your mind/think about it before you commit).

The Boss' Route - the game automatically starts on this route so no need to unlock it.

To choose this route, you must agree to the marriage proposal.

The Idol's Route - this route becomes available when: 1. You reject the boss' marriage proposal. 2. You don't hand in your resignation letter.

To choose this route, you must agree to help the boss find a replacement for you as his fake fiancée.

Note: the boss may make several appearances in this route since you're still working for him. However, you won't be able to romance him.

The Best Friend's Route - this route becomes available when: 1. You reject the boss' marriage proposal. 2. You hand in your resignation letter.

To choose this route, you must decide to move back to your hometown.

Note: the boss may make a few cameos, trying to convince the secretary to come back to Seoul. Again, he won't be romance-able.

The Grim Reaper's Route - this route becomes available when: 1. You reject the boss' marriage proposal. 2. You hand in your resignation letter.

To choose this route, you must stay in Seoul with no immediate plans for the future.

Note: I don't plan to have the boss make a cameo in this route, but who knows?
