Some Weather-related Vocabulary

for your next poem/story

Barometer - an instrument for determining the pressure of the atmosphere and hence for assisting in forecasting weather and for determining altitude

Blizzard - a long severe snowstorm; an intensely strong cold wind filled with fine snow

Breezy - swept by breezes (i.e., a light gentle wind)

In celebration of my first wolf in wolfquest making it to eight years old i drew his entire pack! This is Storm and the Winter Sky Pack. Explanation of the Pack below

The large grey wolf facing left and lying down, is Storm. He is an eight year old wolf who is an excellent fighter and has killed several rival pack leaders when they threatened his pups.

The black wolf to Storm's right is Forest, his new mate. While Forest is new to the pack they accepted her easily.

The pups around them are the newest pups of the pack, they are just a month old and haven't yet formed their personalities yet nor have they gotten their names.

To the left of Storm is Snow, Storm's first mate. She died in her sleep at eight just before the last litter fully grew up.

The first five wolves are the first litter, who were pre-saga update so they are no longer in the pack. The white brindled wolf is Ice, the dark brown one next to her is Thunder, then there is Lightning, the orange one is Cloud and the brown one laying down is Blizzard the runt of the litter.

The next five are the second litter, the two tussling are Sleet and Hail who are both four and have not dispersed yet. The next two are Rain and Freeze who dispersed early together at a year old. After them is Drizzle who dispersed on his own at two and has become the leader of a rival pack.

The four after that are the third litter, Typhoon is laying down next to 2280F who died at one month old to sickness. The other two are Tornado and Cyclone who both dispersed, separately, at two years old.

The fifth and final grown litter is much smaller now then at their birth. 2697F died at three months old to sickness, following just two months after that was 2694F who was killed by a bear. The remaining pups are Fog, the angry orange one, Tempest the one pinned, and Squall who is sitting nearby.

This whole piece took about eighteen to nineteen hours split up between two days, i probably should have spread it out more but i was really excited.

Character Intro: Poseidon (Kingdom of Ichor)

Nicknames- Lord of the Sea, Stormbringer by the people of the Underwater Kingdom & Freshwater Territories

Age- 21 (immortal)

Location- Naxos, Olympius

Personality- He's very moody and aggressive. When he's in a good mood (not very often), Poseidon can be approachable & even friendly. Much like his younger brother, Poseidon is a playboy who doesn't pursue serious relationships with women.

He has the standard abilities of a god. As the god of the sea, oceans, water, rivers, lakes, streams, freshwater, saltwater, marine life, storms, waves, tides, currents, floods, drought, navigation, seafaring, ships, earthquakes, landslides, horses, horsemanship, & chariots his other powers/abilities include communicating with/shapeshifting into all sea creatures, equine animals, as well as other animals that are sacred to him, hydrokinesis (water manipulation); his control over saltwater being far more powerful than his control over freshwater, water distillation (he can also manipulate water vapor, fog, steam, mist, & condensation), vitakinesis (healing); by use of water, atmokinesis (weather manipulation); as it relates to storms with water- hurricanes, squalls, sea storms, typhoons, heavy rain, and even ice storms, hail, & blizzards, teleportation (by way of conjuring a water portal), earthquake generation, telekinetic ship control, as well as being able to induce seasickness in other beings (temporarily).

His natural scent is a mixture of saltwater & seaweed. 

Poseidon is able to develop a tail when in water. It's covered in stunning cobalt, gold, & silver scales.

A notable physical feature are his intense blue-green eyes. Out of his brothers, Poseidon resembles their mother the most.

He's currently in self-imposed exile (in a shapeshifted mortal form) after the MAJOR controversy surrounding himself, his niece Athena (goddess of wisdom), and a young woman-turned gorgon named Medusa. Many of Poseidon's political responsibilities have been collectively transferred to the Sea Council until further notice, naming Delphin (god of dolphins) as acting regent in his stead. He has ignored many calls inquiring about ''the situation." Poseidon has only let Delphin know his real location.

He’s the second son of The Cannibal King- Kronos (Titan god of the harvest, time, & fate) and Rhea (Titaness of fertility, motherhood, & comfort). 

Poseidon is a middle brother. He has an older one- King of the Underworld, Hades (god of the dead) and King of Olympius & the Heavens, Zeus (god of the sky, thunder, & lightning).

His back, arms, & chest are covered in acid burns due to being imprisoned in Kronos’ stomach as a newborn freshly out of the womb. The scars are now covered in intricate tattoos (done in blue ink) that resemble ocean waves.

In the Underwater Kingdom, Poseidon lives in a glittering gold palace filled with hundreds of merfolk attendants/servants. The interior design is very grand and opulent with the walls being built out of stunning abalone (also known as mother-of-pearl). The doors are made out of Oceanic Metal while the flooring is a polished gray-blue seastone. Ornate saltwater marble fountains are found throughout the mansion as well as overhead pearl, crystal, diamond, mint sapphire, and aquamarine chandeliers. 

 In the palace, his favorite room is the throne room. The throne room is a ceremonial space where Poseidon presides over official events, holds council, grants audiences, & receives homage. It's also the setting for investitures, coronations, and balls. It’s also the setting for investitures, coronations, and balls.

The sea king's throne is situated on the top of the high steps. It's built out of Celestial Bronze and is engraved with various sea creatures like dolphins, hippocampuses, seals, sea serpents, & seahorses.

In Olympius, Poseidon owns a penthouse in The Pelagios Building (located in the Tsunami district), a sprawling ranch estate in the state of Corinth (where there's also a large stallion farm), and a seaside cottage in Naxos.

He also has a submarine named The Titaness, after his mother.

Poseidon has a beloved pet hippocampus, a girl named Aquamarine. He hasn’t seen her since his exile. 

A divine symbol for him is his trident, which was crafted for him by the three blacksmithing cyclopes. Poseidon is almost never seen without it. With his mighty trident, he can conjure up floods or an earthquake by striking the ground with it. In his realm, he can use it to generate skyscraper tall ocean waves!

His sacred plants include seaweed, pine, willow, and wild celery.

Poseidon is fluent in most languages spoken in the three realms, except for Serpentis.

Ever since his liberation from his father’s imprisonment, Poseidon has been suffering on/off with headaches and migraines- which Poseidon describes as “waves of pain crashing against my skull and brain.” Most nights, the sounds of his wails can be heard throughout the darkest depths of the Underwater realm & can even be faintly heard in Olympius.

When ruling or doing business, Poseidon dresses in sharp tailored suits in hues of blues, teals, whites, and silvers. In his downtime, he doesn't mind dressing down- wearing khaki shorts, sandals, & linen and floral shirts. 

He rarely wears his crown, only for official purposes. The crown is made from Celestial Bronze. It includes a trident shaped crest in the center and is also decorated with blue sapphires, diamonds, & aquamarines.

As King, there’s the Sea Council- a governing body that advises Poseidon as well as instituting policies at his command. Members are appointed to their position by the king. Other than Delphin, who serves as Poseidon’s advisor, other members of the Sea Council include Aegaeon (god of sea storms), Palaemon (god of sharks), and Nerissa (goddess of jellyfish).

There’s also The Blue Cloaks- seven esteemed swordsmen that serve as royal bodyguards to the King (and by extension, the royal family) of the Underwater realm. 

Poseidon is currently laying low in a shapeshifted mortal form at his seaside cottage in Naxos. Even though he gives orders to be alone, he remains under the watchful eye of one of his Blue Cloaks- a merman named Morcan Coldtide. Even though he won't ever admit to it, Poseidon is grateful for his company.

He naively thought that “The Incident” wouldn’t have become the grotesque monster it now is. Poseidon thought that he, for the first time in a long time, was doing something selfless, unmarked by self-interest- not looking for anything in return. Instead, he was deemed “a predator,” “a lustful beast,” & a “monster among women.” The late night/celebrity show circuit was an absolute nightmare!

Poseidon couldn’t rule this way, with paparazzi and reporters staking outside the palace or his female attendants suddenly looking at him with fear in their eyes. He never had much faith in his abilities as king before all this anyway. “The Incident” might’ve stirred up a shitstorm, but it was good for one thing- it gave Poseidon the perfect reason to step away from the throne.

His favorite celebration used to be the Blue Moon Festival, a major celebration in the Underwater Kingdom 

He seriously considered giving the throne back to the realm’s former ruler- his uncle Oceanus (Titan god of the sea), but he declined. 

Poseidon likes listening to punk rock, hip-hop, and classical music in addition to sea shanties.

At Naxos, most of his days are spent sailing, fishing, clearing the beach of trash, and going through dozens of bottles of beer before ending the night in bed with his current girlfriend.

A go-to drink for him is algae beer. Poseidon doesn’t like coffee. He also likes seaweed soda, champagne, white wine, New Olympus Iced Teas, sparkling saltwater, blue hawaiis, piña coladas, mojitos, coconut margaritas, mai tais, as well as hypnotic breezes. 

Poseidon considers the day he was freed from Kronos to be the true start of his life. Not when Rhea gave birth to him and he was immediately surrounded by darkness. Of course as a baby, he couldn’t make sense of anything. Poseidon was totally defenseless. As he got older, Poseidon became aware that he wasn’t alone. Another being was with him. He couldn’t see him, but he was able to feel & hear him. The being’s voice was steady, clear, and succinct. Poseidon went to school in total darkness! The other being taught him what he already knew- the alphabet and simple arithmetic. Poseidon looked forward to when it’d be time to sleep. The being would softly sing an Old Greek lullaby and that’d be the only moments where Poseidon truly felt safe. When he asked the being what his name was, the voice simply replied, “Hades.”

There was sensory overload when he and the being were finally freed, pulled from the chasm of Kronos by another being that would come to be known as Zeus, “The Silver Usurper.” Poseidon finally got a look at the being who was with him for what seemed like an eternity. He was tall, lanky, and paler than the light that shone on them through the darkness. His eyes were the most piercing purple. Poseidon nearly fainted when Zeus explained that the three of them were all brothers- that he fought & won a war for his brothers’ freedom. 

His favorite frozen treats are coconut sorbet & blue moon ice cream.

Poseidon enjoyed the festivities that celebrated the end of Titan rule and started the Olympian rule. He didn’t quite grasp the sheer seriousness of being crowned the new king/ruler of the Underwater realm. He was just overjoyed to be in the presence of other beings. To see actual light. To eat actual food. 

He also didn’t mind having female company. Poseidon’s first night as king was at a brothel, his body intertwined with mermaids, sirens, and mortal women. If this is being king, he thought, Poseidon never wanted it to end.

He was under the mentorship of his Uncle Oceanus because he remained neutral during the Titanomachy. Even to this day before the exile, Poseidon received valuable counsel from Oceanus.

He also holds other water deities in high regard like his uncle’s wife Tethys (Titaness of freshwater & clouds), the de facto Queen & ruler of the Freshwater Territories, as well as Hydros (god of water), The Nesoi (sister island goddesses), and the many, many cousins he has through Oceanus & Tethys- like Achelous (god of freshwater).

Poseidon has never told Hades this, but he views him like the father he never had. Their relationship now is less actual discussions and more official appearances. Poseidon still looks forward to the poker games his older brother hosts at his palace in the Underworld. Poseidon plays along with Hypnos (god of sleep), Charon (Ferryman of the Underworld), Thanatos (god of death), and Zeus.

He loves the seaweed almond cookies that Delphin makes. He also likes the coconut cream pie from Hollyhock's Bakery.

Poseidon’s relationship with Zeus is far more playful, though he was surprised by how angry his baby brother was when news of “The Incident” first went public. The only other instance where Zeus’ anger almost terrified him was when Poseidon played a part in the Olympians’ Rebellion.

They’ve both shared quite a few lovers over the years, but Poseidon does feel bad afterward how this hurts his sister-in-law & Zeus’ wife, Hera (goddess of women & marriage).

In his realm, Poseidon has quite a few businesses including a luxury cruise & submarine line called Asphaleois, eateries like The Grand Pearl (a high class restaurant) and The Ocean Roll (a sushi restaurant), a nightclub called Tidal, in addition to a stripclub called Siren’s Song.

He also oversees the Pontomedon Marine Institute, the largest marine research institution in the Underwater realm.

Poseidon used to take lotus tiles, but now mainly smokes pot.

In Olympius, there are nationwide locations of The Ocean Roll and The Oyster Shack. In the Tsunami neighborhood (the neighborhood inspired by Poseidon) in New Olympus, there’s the water park called Wild Water Typhoon. There’s also beachside hotels.

The Sea King is also in the fashion industry with a menswear brand called Cerulean Stone in addition to a surf apparel brand called Blue Rhapsody.

He also oversees the Olympic Derby- the largest horse/hippocampus race in Olympius & the Underwater realm!

Out of all of Zeus' kids, Poseidon can't stand Athena, especially after the whole "Athens" debacle.

He’s not really close with the rest of his nieces & nephews except for Ares (god of war). 

Like the rest of the beings in his realm, Poseidon is a pescatarian- with most of the meat he eats being animals from the sea. Some of his favorite foods include soft shell salmon tacos topped with garlic lime dressing, risotto with buttered lobster tails, shrimp fettuccine alfredo, and garlic crusted grilled shark steaks. Poseidon also loves the lobster roll sandwich from The Bread Box as well as the salmon burger topped with extra jellyfish slaw from The Dive, a popular fast food restaurant in his realm.

He once ate an entire tray of 100 lobster sushi rolls at a party.

With his extended family, Poseidon is not close with his grandmother Gaia (goddess of the earth), his aunt Eurybia (goddess of the sea’s mastery), or his other uncles The Ourea (esteemed mountain gods).

He has hung out a few times with his other uncle Thaumas (god of sea wonders). Poseidon is unsure of whether any being can be as cheerful as his uncle.

In the pantheon, he doesn’t have many friends except for Leto (Titaness of demurity & motherhood) and Notus (god of the south wind).

He’s been ignoring Hera’s incessant phone calls and has a stack of written letters from her delivered by Iris (goddess of the rainbow). Poseidon’s not a fool. He knows what Hera wants- to do her “queenly duties” and save the pantheon from any more controversy, by first establishing a political marriage for Poseidon.

Poseidon cares for his other advisors, appreciating the fact that Delphin stepped up as regent, knowing full well the stress he’s about to introduce in his life. 

Delphin, Nerissa, & Palaemon discussed “The incident” with Poseidon only once before he left. They simply asked him if it was true and he simply replied, “No.”

Poseidon hasn’t surfed since “The Incident.” The freedom of riding waves just doesn’t do it for him anymore.

A silver lining among all the wreckage has been him being re-acquainted with his mother Rhea. Poseidon hasn’t told his brothers. He first initiated contact with her after the term of her banishment was over. They had dinner together at her estate in Samos. Poseidon wouldn’t call them “mother/son” or “friends,” but they’re more friendly with each other. He figures that they’re both currently lonely & could use a bit of support. Once or twice, the thought came to Poseidon to ask Rhea about his birth. If she tried to save him from Kronos, but he stops himself.

The two now have dinner every week at his seaside cottage in Naxos. Poseidon has had the displeasure of trying Rhea’s cooking afterwards, testing out the food she brings in plastic containers. Even though he’d rather eat roadkill, the look of sheer joy and pride on Rhea’s face makes Poseidon act along. They’ve recently graduated from an awkward hand shake to a less awkward one arm hug.

In the pantheon Poseidon had unrequited crushes on Demeter (goddess of the harvest & agriculture) as well as Asteria (Titaness of falling stars, astrology, magic, necromancy, & nocturnal oracles and prophecies).

He also had relationships with two of The Pleiades- Alcyone and Celaeno, though not at the same time.

Poseidon also dated Chione (goddess of snow) for a bit.

He also tried getting with Nephele (goddess of clouds) to no avail.

Poseidon is currently seeing Iphimedia, a princess of Thessaly. He knows that their relationship will eventually end- being that he doesn’t want to get married & she’s already betrothed to a mortal named Aloeus as part of an arranged marriage. Poseidon hates how needy and jealous she is, even more so since “The Incident.” They get into at least a dozen arguments before the tension is cut by them ripping each other’s clothes off. Now, Poseidon almost looks forward to the arguments because he knows that it ends with hot steamy sex.

Before the exile, he enjoyed a wide range of activities like horseback riding, underwater photography, boxing, rock climbing, cliff diving, swimming, basketball, and tai chi. Now he enjoys getting drunk and making love.

Teldryn was freezing, which wasn’t any surprise, really. He’d been trudging into the wind over veritable mountains of snow at this point. He was all but blinded by the blizzard around him, and deafened by the thunder. Hail bounced off his helmet and armor, the near-constant hollow thunk starting to irritate him worse than before. Regardless of all his layers, he felt like if he paused for even a second, he’d become a solid block of ice. He was sorely tempted to try that trick with the Flame Cloak again just for the warmth, but thought better of wasting Magicka. He didn’t know what awaited on the other side down by the shore. He could only hope Nyenna was still there, still safe enough. He closed his eyes behind his chitin lenses and tried to recall what he had seen — pristine black boots. Gold details. Familiar, somehow, but without the whole picture, he couldn’t place it. The image had faded from his mind too fast, though what was more concerning was how blurred it had been, as if by tears. He was still in shock, if he was being honest, that the Atronach had even been able to give him this warning.

His stomach grumbled. He’d left the rabbit and snowberries in the cave. All that work only to feed the stray Riekling. Lovely. But he could move faster without having to manage all that. Food would have to wait. He’d gone longer without a meal before, anyway. He paused only long enough to readjust the two travel cloaks and pull the hoods in closer around his face. Nyenna’s was, predictably, much too short, but of a nicer quality. It helped. Thank whatever Gods for her, he thought, because the cold of the blizzard still seeped through. He could handle it, though, with this small gesture. He’d catch up to her if it was the last thing he’d manage before the weather finally did him in. Now that he thought about it… was that even possible? He wasn’t keen on finding out.

Finally, through the thick curtains of snow and hail, Teldryn was able to see the coast. He’d wandered a little further north than he’d intended, but he had his bearings, more or less. The waves crashed angry and grey against the ashen shores, salt mist all but freezing as it settled over the rocks, shells, and stinking piles of seaweed that had been dragged up from the depths among the dreugh. He kept the ice shelf and the looming storm clouds over his shoulder as he headed south. The lightning struck somewhere in the distant ocean. He counted to himself, and three seconds later thunder tore through the air. Too close. If it wasn’t already dangerous out here, the storm would overwhelm if he didn’t hurry.

He tried his best to pick up the pace. His legs ached from trudging through the snow and the more he thought about it, the more angry he got about the whole thing. All of it was on Neloth now, every detail of this little disaster. He couldn’t just ask for help, of course. It had to be manipulation, because ‘no, Neloth, I am not doing your bullshit quest’ didn’t seem to register as an answer in the old wizard’s thick skull.

It was easy to blame Neloth, really. Teldryn had done it more than once in the last handful of days. But the truth was…he’d been gone too long. This, like usual, was really his own damned fault. Nyenna had hired him to watch her back, and what did he do? Wander off like a s’wit into the middle of a Godsdamned storm for a handful of berries. Just great. He would kick himself if he could.

There was some indiscernible sound issuing from just ahead over the howl of the weather. Something like terrified shrieks, which didn’t bode overly well. He rounded the corner of a cliff that overlooked Northshore Landing and kept close to the rocks. His Candlelight spell had been rendered almost useless; the light it threw barely gave him enough light for the next steps. He let it wink out and ran a hand along the outcropping. He sighed and searched the back of his mind for the presence that he could sometimes still feel in moments like this. It was barely there; a tawny feather in a vast darkness. Shadows hide him indeed. He’d have the advantage if he could manage not to fuck this part up, as relatively blind as he was at the moment. He wished he’d bothered learning Nyenna’s Detect Life spell.
