The thing I get most in my head about, reliably, is asking people for things. More especially asking people to do things for me.
It'll be an annoyance.
Even if it's nothing major. Even if it's something they've happily done a hundred times before.
It'll be an imposition.
Even if I know they love me. Even if it would make me happy if they asked the same thing of me.
It's kind of exploitation if you think about it.
Even if it's a work thing, and they're being paid to do it and I'm being paid to ask them to do it.
I can anticipate the spiral, and I build in time to navigate the spiral before the thing needs doing, and I can reliably break out of the spiral once I'm in it, but the spiral still always happens.
I think that's why I wrote I Need A Miracle.
It wasn't an intention I set out with consciously: to get into character as a variety of people who want and who find it in themselves to ask, even when the things they want are vast and life-changing; when they are, unquestioningly, imposing. But looking back at the finished scripts now, as casting gets under way and I start to think about how I launch and talk about the show later this year, I can see more clearly why, out of all the possibilities, this was the concept that bubbled to the top and demanded to be written first.
Every character in I Need A Miracle does nothing but want. That's the concept: every episode is a prayer, a plea to a higher power for divine intervention. We never hear anything beyond these pleas, these prayers. Anyone who doesn't want anything won't pray for anything, so we'll never hear their voice.
There's an idea that all characters in drama must want something. Here, though, the wanting is front and centre. It's not just what's driving their decisions and actions. It's the reason they're speaking to us. They're all forced to articulate what they want – and not only that but justify why they deserve to get it, because not all prayers are granted.
That ought to have been hard to write, for someone like me who's embarrassed to want things, and who's shy about making those desires someone else's problem or responsibility.
But it wasn't hard. When it's someone else's desire, it's easy! Of course they deserve it. It's not even that big an ask. Anyone would be happy to oblige.
That's the quickest, most effective way I've found to break out of the spiral. Think: if someone else asked this of me, would I think it was rude, or an imposition, or overstepping the mark? Nine times out of ten the answer is: no, I'd actually be stoked to be asked.

The Brain Gremlins: You are worthless and you will never accomplish a single thing of value.
Me: Counter Point- I have already accomplished several things of value, that I'm very proud of.
The Brain Gremlins: Those things don't count because you're the one who did them. And nothing you can do, could ever possibly matter.
Me: That logic feels flawed but I'm not equipped to dispute it. However I am equipped to just pet my cats and ignore you.
The Brain Gremlins: Hey! Get back here! We're not done berating you for existing yet!!
My Cats: They can't hear you now [purring noises intensify]

Wild Disease - Lockdown ( DOTD Gremlins )
Through the darkness illuminated only by the full moon, hurried footsteps could be heard through the undergrowth along with panting breaths and the snapping of branches and leaves. A mogwai with brownish fur mixed with white was running through the dark and endless forest, looking everywhere he could, his heart racing and his lungs almost without oxygen and his vision almost blurred, as if he was about to faint. But he couldn't stop. Loud growls and more branches breaking could be heard.
He was being chased. The mogwai screamed for help and nothing. In that dark and plant-infested void there was no response. He continued to run until he jumped over a trunk and hid. He immediately covered his mouth to avoid the scandalous sighs while he heard his heart sound like a war drum, beating nonstop inside his chest. In his hiding place, the mogwai could hear a loud roar and growls, he closed his eyes and felt tears running down his fur, anxiously waiting for the beast to leave.
Suddenly, the frightening sounds diminished and became silence, hearing only the sound of crickets chirping, the mogwai breathed a sigh of relief and opened his eyes with the thought of being safe, when he found a pair of red eyes standing out from a dark silhouette that watched him hungrily, that made the poor creature scream as the thing bit his face with its fierce sharp teeth. Hearing only one thing..
''GIZMO!''
''A-Ah!'' - The mogwai stood up quickly, looking around in terror and seeing only a room with other beds.. A dormitory, Gizmo took a deep breath and rubbed his face against his hands. Feeling the cold sweat and his heavy breathing ease.
'' Thank God.. It was a dream.. ''
After Gizmo woke up from his nightmare, he took his hands off his face and saw the wide-open eyes of another mogwai, his fur dyed orange and white with a few black spots, showing a mischievous smile, he was younger than Gizmo.
'' Good morning, sleepyhead! ''
'' Ah.. Daffy, did you wake up early?'' - Said the brown-haired Mogwai, rubbing his eyes, the orange mogwai's smile widened even more, nodding.
'' You slept for much longer. Was it good this time?'' - Daffy asked, tilting his head to the side.
'' I had a nightmare.. Again..'' - He got up from the bed, going to the wardrobe to open it and get a shirt and a blouse, putting them on and adjusting his simple look..
'' This time.. Was it the monsters..? '' - Daffy looked at Gizmo with a look of concern, Gizmo looked at him and pressed his lips together, just mumbling a '' yes ''. The orange mogwai walks to the open door and waits with a comment.
'' Come on, Captain Mohawk and the others must be waiting for us. ''
'' Sure.. '' - He simply agreed, the brown mogwai finished getting ready and followed Daffy outside the dormitory, while thoughts filled his head, seeing that same hallway.. The same half-off lights and the peeling walls of the bunker where he and the others were taking refuge..
He doesn't even remember how all this mess started, he only remembers his work in the office, drawing a sketch to do an art project.. The usual monotonous routine. Gizmo only remembers one thing: coming home and hearing on television about a disease that was affecting the citizens, seeing images of hairless mogwais with rashes and sores on their skin while they were bedridden with a high fever... Before... They turned into scaly wild beasts.
He was moved from his hometown, Kingston Falls, to New York to escape the contamination. Remembering being with his brothers, Stripe and Mohawk during the transport, going to an apartment. But unfortunately, the situation got even worse when this new disease arrived in New York, it was chaos overnight and now there was poor Gizmo. Confined in a bunker with a group of survivors, unable to see the outside while the world was taken over by wild creatures. He came out of his thoughts as soon as they arrived at the meeting, everyone was gathered. Mohawk drinking his coffee and his men, George and Lenny playing cards at a table while exchanging a few laughs. ''Good morning guys!'' - Daffy said, drawing the attention of those present. Lenny took his attention away from the cards to greet him back, George turned around and removed the cigar from his mouth, without changing a part of his grumpy face. ''Hey, boys. You're late for breakfast.'' - George said, straightening up to continue the game. '' Yeah, the sleepyhead here wouldn't wake up at all. '' - Daffy commented, pointing his thumb at Gizmo, who was staring at him with a grimace. The latter chuckled and then asked:
'' Is there any food here? '' - He settled into a chair, looking at a tray with bread and licked his lips, picking up and nibbling on one of them. Gizmo walked over to Mohawk and pulled out the chair to sit next to him.
'' Where is Commander Roger and the others? '' - The mogwai asked, resting his arms on the table and looking at his brother with the white mane and dark fur.
'' They're talking to Doctor ''Brain'', Roger and the doctor always discuss the creatures out there. '' - Mohawk replied without emotion, sipping what was left of the coffee in his cup. Scratching his head and looking back at Gizmo.
''Hmm.. Complicated.. But I believe that Doctor Ben is doing his best to find a solution here..''
''Brother, he is the only doctor and scientist we have alongside the nurse. I don't know if that is enough-'' Before he could finish speaking, a thud caught his and everyone else's attention in the room. Commander Roger and his men had arrived, and from the look on the old Mogwai's face, the conversation wasn't going well.
''George, Lenny. Put down the cards, the doctor wants to take a specimen from the corral!'' - Ordered the commander, coldly staring at George and Lenny, who swallowed hard. Mohawk raised his head to Roger.
''Another one..?!'' - He asked, bothered. The captain was worried about his men as soon as the Doctor. ''Brain'' demanded the experiments with the infected creatures.
''What's the problem..?''
''This week, three of the creatures have already gone to the lab, we should watch them and take care of the men! Lenny was almost attacked by a-'' - Mohawk retorted, being interrupted again by the commander.
''What do you think we should do? We don't have what it takes for this damn place, not even for our own safety! If you think this is bad, why don't you help your little friends..? '' - Roger growled, his angry face was visible and frightened Daffy who just remained quiet in his place.
''Do you really think I don't help? I do and I care about them, since we are leftovers in this ended world! '' - Mohawk replied, now getting stressed by his commander's rudeness.
''Mohawk.. Leave it alone, it's not worth arguing..'' - Gizmo got up from his seat, putting his hand on his brother's shoulder. They looked at each other and Mohawk growled at Roger, looking at the two partners.
''Come on, George and Lenny.. We have work to do.'' - The two Mogwais agreed with Mohawk's order, dropping the cards and standing up, grabbing their weapons as they followed their captain out of the hall. On the way to the warehouse, Mohawk muttered curses, possibly against Roger. Gizmo just watched him and cut through his hateful whispers by commenting.
''Don't mind him, Mohawk. You care about them, that's good.''
''I know, Gizmo.. But it's hard to put up with this guy! He thinks he's in charge here.'' '' I know that.. Brother.. Don't worry, Ben will find a solution and get us out of this mess. '' - Gizmo rubbed his hand on Mohawk's back to calm him down.
'' By the way.. I'll help you with this. '' - That made Mohawk widen his eyes and stare at his brother, shaking his head.
'' N-no! Don't do that, Gizzy! What if one of those things hurts you? ''
'' Heh.. Come on, I'm not easy prey. '' - The brown mogwai smiles and takes the pistol from Mohawk's holster. '' I learned from the best shooter. Nothing bad will happen! Trust me. ''
The white-maned mogwai snorts and smiles back. '' Okay.. If Stripe were here, he would have definitely kicked your ass for your stubbornness. ''
'' Hehehe! I do my best for my brothers..'' - Gizmo laughed, showing his first joy.
After exchanging laughter and conversations, the group arrived at the place.. It was a cave with several military vehicles, illuminated by several lights on the ceiling far from the ground. They saw a large barrier made of metal and wood plates, it was an abandoned observation post that had now been renovated and turned into a barrier to prevent the infected from entering. Everyone went to their positions, George climbed the post's stairs to reach the top while Lenny and Mohawk were waiting with capture sticks and rifles loaded with tranquilizer darts.
Gizmo observed the situation, ready with his pistol, the silence that previously reigned in the cave was taken by George's outrageous screams, clapping his hands, whistling loudly to attract attention.
''COME ON YOU BASTARDS! DON'T WANT MEAT? COME AND GET IT! '' - George yelled, the tension increased when the group heard the hissing and roaring in the darkness of the cave, creatures similar to the mogwai came out of the shadows, but tall and ugly, they had scales on their bodies, their eyes were red and sharp along with their teeth and deadly claws, they growled in a crowd approaching the barricade, eager for fresh meat.
Mohawk at that moment prepared himself, climbing up on the platform with his fishing rod and looked at George, nodding his head, the mogwai with a grumpy face took a deep breath and got down. Joining Mohawk and began to prepare the bait, taking a hook that was tied to a rope that was attached to a piece of wood that served to attract the creatures. To finish, he took some meat from a nearby bucket and stuck it on the hook and lowered the rope.
Lenny watched the monsters through the gap in the barricade, Gizmo came closer to observe..
'' Damn... There are so many. '' - Lenny pointed, feeling nervous when he saw the amount. Gizmo looked at his watch on his wrist, it was 8:00 in the morning, he looked back at the creatures and said.
''It's 8 in the morning.. It's sunny outside..''
''What does that mean?'' - Lenny looked at Gizmo out of the corner of his eye, curious about the statement.
''There are so many.. Because they came down here.. They're not idiots to expose themselves to the sun..'' - Gizmo stared at the creatures..
''They learn fast..'' - Lenny added, swallowing hard.
''Now we just have to wait for the fish to bite the bait..'' - George whispered.. Sure enough, it didn't take long for one of the creatures to smell the meat and start salivating, hurriedly running up to the walking piece of meat and biting it with all his might. Mohawk, seeing the perfect moment, ordered.
''Lenny! Close the door now! '' - Lenny without hesitation lowered the rope that closed the door behind the creature, it immediately found itself cornered and became agitated, violently hitting the metal walls. George pulled out his flashlight and illuminated the creature's face that contorted in pain with the strong light, serving as a distraction for Mohawk to lasso the monster's neck.
''I GOT IT! I GOT IT!''
''HOLD ON TIGHT!'' - George quickly got down from the platform, the mogwai passed the pole to him, holding it firmly and his partner opened the main door, letting the beast enter. Very agitated and ferocious, wanting to kill everyone there. Lenny was afraid of the creature and moved as far away as he could to avoid being attacked. George used his strength to keep it in place, but the thing was stronger than him. He was sure he could feel his feet dragging on the ground, struggling to maintain his balance.
'AARGH! RAAAAAWR!'' The creature roared loudly, angrier, that brought back terrible memories for Gizmo. His nightmare, the desperate feeling of hearing those sounds and not having anyone to help. He found himself frozen, pointing his pistol at the infected.
'LENNY! USE THE TRANQUILIZER ON THIS Wretched Man!'' - George shouted, until he was thrown to the ground. He blinked his eyes to see what had happened and, unfortunately for him... The tip of the rod broke and the creature was free, growling and snorting, he looked at his first target in front of him. The beast roared and advanced on Gizmo, its claws and teeth ready to tear the entire mogwai apart. Gizmo froze, the instinct to pull the trigger was erased by shock and fear. The infected raised his hand to scratch Gizmo, the mogwai closed his eyes, expecting the worst. Watching his life pass like a dramatic film in his eyes, holding his breath. He fell to the ground, grunting on impact, expecting the unbearable pain or death where he would never wake up again. However, he felt no pain or his warm blood running down, perhaps the second option? He slowly opened his eyes and came across the huge body motionless on top of him, with a tranquilizer dart in the back of his neck. ''Gizmo!'' - Mohawk shouted as he ran towards him, grabbing him by the shoulders and dragging him under his body, far away and kneeling down at his height. ''A-are you okay? Are you hurt? ''
Gizmo shook his head, unable to speak due to the fright and confusion that was going on in his mind now. George and Lenny tied up the new specimen to be taken away, Mohawk lifted him off the ground and let his brother lean on him.
''Come on... Get out of here...'' - They both agreed and left.
After the scare, Gizmo was in the dormitory, writing in his diary. The notebook with the cover decorated with flowers and birds painted by him. He wrote down his experience and near death, letting his thoughts flow onto the paper.
The moment they arrived at this shelter, the blurred memory of Stripe and his troop being sent on a patrol, his face covered by the moonlight outside the base along with his team. It was the last time they saw each other, since then, there was no sign of his brother or the team. Lenny tried to make some contact by radio, that place seemed cursed! Nothing worked! The survivors found themselves in a desperate and claustrophobic situation, in a closed space with no outside help.
Closing his diary, the mogwai rested his head on the headboard of the bed and sighed, getting out of bed to put away his precious notebook that kept him calm from all this frustration along with his drawings.
While wandering around to clear his head, Gizmo heard some muffled noises and knocks coming from the laboratory. Overcome by curiosity, the boy went to where the sound was coming from after opening the door. Coming across the famous Doctor ''Brain'' with his experiments lying on surgery tables, completely still. Possibly dead. The mogwai, wearing glasses and brownish fur a little darker than Gizmo's, observed one of the creatures that had been captured earlier, due to the tranquilizer, it was only making noises and moving slowly.
''Doctor Ben..? '' - He caught attention, the mogwai turned to see who had called him, opening a friendly smile.
''Ah! Gizmo, what a pleasant surprise! Come closer, I have something to show you.'' - Anxious, he goes to a board with notes, the mogwai comes closer to analyze.
''What is this..?'' - Gizmo asked.
''A crucial note on how contamination happens, my friend.'' - Brain replied, using his finger to point out the phases of the mutation. '' Note.. This disease we are facing is different from all the others we have known. When it started, I wrote down a few things.. '' - The doctor pointed to more things.
'' Victims of contamination tend to have a high fever and lack of appetite.. The initial step of the infection, before they start to scratch themselves frantically, an uncomfortable and incessant itch like scabies. '' - During the explanation, Gizmo looked carefully at the signs noted, there were photographs of the patients, each one more horrible than the last. It showed the same rashes and sores he had seen on television before all this.
'' And what comes next..?'' - Asked the mogwai, disgusted by the images.
'' That's the most remarkable part! Gizmo, I did some tests on the bodies of these.. Specimens, but I like to nickname them ''gremlins''. Just so I wouldn't have to call them creatures all the time. They undergo a mutation, their body changes. They lose their hair and take on this horrible reptilian appearance. That's not all. '' - The doctor approached one of the bodies and removed the sheet from above. That corpse had its brain exposed and connected to some wires. The sight made Gizmo even more scared and disgusted.
'' I noticed that when the disease reaches its final stage, all brain activity is inactivated. Only the nucleus remains. The primitive and wild part that we have! The ''R'' complex! That's what makes them more aggressive and uncontrollable, my friend! ''
'' Gremlins.. What's the conclusion of this, Ben..? '' - The mogwai asked in shock at the sight, turning his neck to look away. The question made Doctor Ben open his mouth, but he froze, no words came out of his mouth, still thinking.
'' W-well.. My conclusion.. Is that.. Look, it's complicated. My thesis would be that we should control these creatures. From proper training. ''
''Training?'' - Gizmo looked confused.
''Yes.. You know.. We should control them, giving them what they want!'' - Brain added, the idea seemed strange and unlikely.
''How do you know this will work? Besides, you should control the number of these things! It's getting more and more dangerous to capture them!'' - He scolded, Doctor Ben didn't react, just listened to Gizmo.
''I-I know that. But it's important that we study them.. To find a solution.''
''Doctor Ben, Roger is getting stressed out like everyone else.. Mohawk is trying his best to balance the situation so they don't lose their minds, they're too anxious to get rid of the situation! We can't be a dead weight for them, we have civilians here who need protection!''
''I'll show you the results, Gizmo.. I'll show them! It's only a matter of time. '' - He stated strongly, Brain adjusted his glasses and covered his body again.
'' Soon.. We will get out of this confinement and solve this terrible problem. I promise..'' ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just an idea I had of combining Day of the Dead (1985) with Gremlins. Where the Mogwais are affected by a new disease that brings an apocalypse and now a group is taking refuge in a bunker.

I... love this??? It's so good and important??? Thank you for sharing because I think my brain really needed that.
Apparently there was some kind of race scheduled at a local park or something so I've been trying to avoid the main trail but a little while ago when I had to cross near it I overheard the following shouted exchange
Higher feminine voice: woo, look at you go! You're jogging! Keep it up!
Lower masculine voice (panting): you know it! Last place is still a place, baby!
And goddamn if that didn't rewire my brain a little bit.
Last place is still a place, baby.
