Minecrafters Using Reference

Reference as in real world architecture, not other minecrafters' builds, though that's a fair way to learn too. Studying real world architecture gives insights about designing buildings, while studying other minecrafters would give insight into how to accomplish certain effects in Minecraft.

I didn't have more than passing interest in architecture before watching mcyt, but now whenever I'm outside, I'm evaluating the buildings around me. Do I like their shape? color? Any interesting details? Any wear or texture? And above all: How would you do that detail/shape/etc in minecraft? (please note: I don't even play minecraft)

Rendition and Inspiration

There's a minecraft project called BuildtheEarth that's replicating the earth in minecraft on a 1 to 1 scale. There's some fantastic builds on there.

On hermitcraft, Joe Hills is known for creating to scale renditions of real world places/objects. In season 10, he's tackled a project of massive scale with Bell Labs. He used a map from the library of congress to layout all the shapes!

These are examples of renditions/replicas/copies/whatever you want to call it (Although Joe's doubles as a community build area in place of massive parking lots).

Then there's using the buildings for inspiration. This may involve just taking bits and pieces. Or maybe you just take a color palette. Or maybe just the shape. Maybe you don't take anything but vibes. As a general rule, I think having multiple sources of inspiration is important so the new build doesn't end up feeling like a rendition instead of its own thing.

Bdubs in season 9 used the bakery from Kiki's Delivery Service as inspiration for his mud cafe. It can be seen in the wood framing, the stairs, the archway, the shape, the shed, the chimney designs. But the colors, the composition, Bdubs made changes that made it his own and combined the addition to his previous shop Moss o Menos.

The aesthetics of Geminitay's season 10 base is based on the video game Dredge. I feel like the most obvious influence is in her research castle and fishing boats. She used inspiration from the spooky sea creatures in the game to create a uniquely frightening angler shop.

In Pearl's Build a Day series, she did a week focused on real world places. Here's the one she designed after a countryside home in Australia (her home country):

Goodtimeswithscar in season 7, when starting Aqua Town, based his shop on old department stores:

I like looking at his Aqua Town builds in comparison to his Scarland Main Street facades, which draw additional inspiration from Disneyland:

I feel like, comparing the builds you can see how he's grown; he's learned new detailing tricks, found colors and textures that work better with the architecture style. The main street has a similar layout to Disneyland, but his buildings are all unique.

Mogswamp is working on a massive build that's based on architecture drawings from Renzo Picasso:

He's incorporating groin vaults from roman architecture too!

I think builders learning about existing architecture is so good. It can give them so many ideas to add into their toolbox. It reminds them of small details that give builds life, like small sheds, some pipes, porches. And the builds don't need to be realistic; My mind goes to work by Shovel and Joel. Or everything Mumbo has done in season 10.

Love Language mod v1- the intro ♡

I can’t believe my first ever mod is finally out! I wrote it out in July 2021 hoping the day it could be a mod and the fact it is out now feels so surreal. The five love language mod in the sims! Yes, our sims can now have a love language as a trait. You can buy the trait from the rewards store and it costs 12 points. Once your sim has the trait, you can see it in the simology panel and then your sims will have wants surrounding their trait. I used ALL the packs to create this mod.

Robloxia is a biiig continent, and Builderman created it

While Builderman is in charge of Robloxia’s government, it is far too big to manage himself, which is where admins come in!

There are two kinds of admins: branch admins, and regional admins.

^ Branch admins are in charge of a specific ‘branch’ of government, hence the name.

Regional admins are in charge of smaller areas, think states

Beneath admins are moderators, those who enforce the law, keep the regions safe, and work in the branches.

Regional moderators can also act as judges when disputes arise. If a moderator’s selected jury can’t come to a decision, the case goes to an admin. If the admin can’t decide, it goes to Builderman.

In a perfect world everybody uses R6, but that’s just not really possible for Roblox so a small (comparatively) chunk of the population uses R15

Exploiting and hacking are banned by law, anyone who does break the law is met with jail time or worse.

007n7 were always good at hiding evidence, but n7 got tired of the stress that came with covering up their tracks, so he retired.

Since Robloxia is so big, most of the survivors didn’t know each other (with the exception of some, like Elliot and n7)

Elliot’s workplace (builder brothers) is nearish where n7 and C00lkidd’s apartment, maybe like a 10 minute car drive

^ Bonus hc time! C00lkidd and n7 are banned from the bb because kid wandered into the kitchen and knocked something over by accident, which caused a chain reaction that nearly burned bb pizza down

^ The owners decided not to press charges since it was clearly an accident, and instead just blacklisted the two. Elliot will hold a grudge until the end of time, though

Chance used to live in a city when he was younger, but found himself associating with the wrong crowd. Because of this, his parents sent him to a boarding school, which coincidentally was nearish bb pizza!!

When a regional admin (Shedletsky) and the literal ruler of Robloxia (Builderman) vanished, the entire system collapsed. Exploiters and hackers ran rampant in Shedletsky’s state, and an emergency vote was held to replace Builderman.

Taph was a branch admin and was hit hard by the vanishing of Builderman. Their boss was gone!!

Another Bonus Hc time, survivors added in updates got forsaken later

Two Time and Azure’s cult was based in a rural town, but they did most of their worship in the forest. Two Time feels at home in the cabin.

Dusekkar lived in the same forest, but kept their distance from the cult.

Hey sorry if this is the wrong place, but I’m interested in watching Hermitcraft and was cur what season I should start in? Like should I just jump in now, or should I go back to previous seasons?

My general recommendation for newcomers is to pick a hermit, start on their first episode of the latest season, and watch from there. Earlier seasons don't really affect the current one, at worst you'll miss a few references.

Right now we're about halfway(?) through Season 10. If you don't have a hermit in mind, I'm sure the wonderful headcanoners here can leave suggestions, but here's some of the hermits I think are best for an introduction to the server.

Grian is where a lot of people start. He's the most popular hermit- just look at this blog, its like 50% Grian. Great builder, mischief maker, and tends to get pretty involved in server plotlines. He did take a break earlier this season, though, so you might miss some things.

GoodTimesWithScar is another very popular hermit. Amazing builder, loves making stories for his bases. He's silly, cheerful, and occasionally murderous. A big player in the recent exile/permit plotline.

ImpulseSV is one of my personal favorites! Very well rounded player, but best at redstone- fun fact, the common item sorter everyone uses is his design. Friendly and chill, seems very normal at first, is not normal. This guy's work ethic is on another level. He's doing a cyberpunk theme this season, and although he's not as into the "main" server plot, what he does is still spectacular.

And of course, can't have Impulse without Skizzleman! A newcomer to Hermitcraft, Skizz may not have the incredible Minecraft skills of other hermits, but he more than makes up for it in heart and a great sense of humour. Him and Impulse have been best friends for over 20 years, and it shows. They both really like bothering each other. Skizz's videos are high energy, full of love and laughter at every turn, I really can't recommend him enough.

eden's garden minecraft server headcanons

Damon: Guy who loves elaborate piston doors. Thinks he's a better builder than he actually is. He and Eva take turns upgrading random stuff in each other's bases while they're offline as a show of dominance. His storage "system" has been a disaster since she was banned. Keeps finding chickens all over the place and doesn't understand where they're coming from.

Eva: Dug herself into a mountain 10,000 blocks away from everyone to build absurdly complicated redstone contraptions, none of which have much utility beyond being cool (eg. working calculator, world's most efficient pickle farm, machine that automatically launches chickens all the way to Damon's base, etc). Likes to build traps in random places. Currently serving a month long ban sentence for blowing up Wolfgang's entire base in a fit of rage (nothing survived. you can see bedrock in some places)

Wolfgang: Has been living out of Grace's basement since The Incident and spends most of his time out on quests to get her whatever items or blocks she asks him for. Building anything stresses him out because he's a perfectionist so he's pretty much embraced the homeless lifestyle.

Grace: Builds almost exclusively out of white concrete. Surprisingly good at making minigames and has recently been preoccupied trying to find the best way to build Minecraft golf. Never collects her own resources. Anything Wolfgang can't get for her, she steals from someone else's storage - usually Damon, Wenona, or Diana. She would love to steal from Eva, but Eva only has one chest with two string and a poppy.

Jett: Also makes minigames but they're kind of bad in a charming way. Claims that Mark lives with him, but Mark has never been to his base. Teamed up with Cassidy and Jean to build a subway system (ice boat tracks) between everyone's bases and has since become enamored with the idea of iceboat racing.

Mark: Does nothing but dig perfect 16x16 holes to bedrock. No beacon, no enchantments, just pure love of the game. It's stress relief for him. Anything he doesn't directly need for crafting more tools gets left behind in a chest. Every once in a while Jett comes by and throws him 4 stacks of cooked pork chops so that's all he eats. The others eventually realize that if they fence off an area and label it as 'to be cleared' he'll just show up and do it.

Cassidy: Technically the server owner but hates admining. Flexed her speedrun strats by beating the ender dragon on day one. Gave everyone a free elytra in the first week (Wenona threw hers into lava in front of her and they've been Minecraft enemies ever since). Spends most of her time either doing community projects or pranking people. Was in the middle of trying to convince Eva to help build a fully functional postal system before The Incident.

Wenona: Has a huge villager trading hall and a farm for pretty much everything. Half the server is indebted to her in some way. The true extent of her infrastructure is unknown even to her closest friends. If you visit her at the wrong time your game WILL drop to 10 fps. Has been caught online at 3 AM multiple times but always claims she was "just AFKing" (this is a lie).

Ulysses: Bad at video games. Can barely play and has a death count in the multiple hundreds. Makes a full map of the server every week or so. Whenever he isn't doing that, he just finds someone doing something interesting (usually Wenona but not always) and watches them like a personal livestream.

Ingrid: Better at the game than anyone expected and has died the least amount of times. Obsessed with armor trims and has a downright unreasonable amount of dogs. Doesn't trade with villagers but uses them as "background characters" for her medieval city build. Constantly the target of pranks like turning her house into an aquarium or encasing it in obsidian, but seems to genuinely believe her friends are just giving her gifts in silly ways.

Toshiko: Building in the same city as Ingrid but in completely different style. Somehow they've made it work. Never affected by the pranks against her basemate because the last time that happened she made them regret their entire lives. Tries and fails to hide the fact that she's afraid of the nether. Types in chat in full grammatically correct sentences complete with punctuation.

Jean: Has admin privileges and does most of the work on that front. Had the final say on Eva's punishment after The Incident. Can never stay in one area for very long and has built something unique in every one of his classmates' bases. Not all of them are aware of this fact. Has sooo many tridents and no one understands how he gets such good drop rates.

Desmond: Spawn-proofed his entire area immediately and now plays the game as a chill farming sim. Only leaves said area on special occasions. Has more food than he could ever use and doesn't care if people take it.

Eloise: Beat all the in-game bosses in a span of like a week then got bored and stopped playing (this is valid).

Kai: Built an actually really impressive castle, but it's all facade and no function (there are no lights on the inside and it doesn't even have a back). Lives in a pile of chests and shulker boxes in an open field. Can never find anything in it. Has a pink bed.

Diana: Plays with shaders. Builds beautiful landscapes like a painting in Minecraft and focuses a lot on little details and atmosphere. Loves doing interiors. Don't ask her what a repeater does because she will not know. Gets all her materials through hand-gathering and generous donations. Eva also tried to blow up her base, but she found the TNT and dug it all up, leaving behind only a few minecarts that did minimal damage.

Alright let's go season 10 predictions.

There will be at least one new Hermit, Probably Skizz, But I also think it's highly likely Joel and Lizzie also join - really hoping for this, Skizz is great, Joel is an amazing builder and has fun interactions with the others (expect his episode one to be dominated by Boat Boys and Neck Kissing Jokes) and Lizzie is also great at Building and would be another edition to the Hermit Girls Murder Group (before any of yall say Stress and Lizzie aren't murderes - they are.)

Soup Group won't base ontop of each other, but they will be relatively close and will commit shenanigans together. Someone else will also base near them and join the shenanigans- maybe Cleo, Stress or False, Mabye Scar if he isn't with buttercups, maybe Lizzie if she's added.

If Skizz is added he doesn't make his own base and instead joins another Hermit and lives in there's, helping with building, Probably Impulse or Tango.

Buttercups will base superclose to each other, its tradition at this point.

Doc will continue to break the game in increasing absurd ways.

If there are new Hermits, Joe sings a little song to welcome them - and then The Hermit Girls Murder Group welcomes them with murder.

Gem keeps the head collecting going - especially if there's new Hermits

Tango (and probably some others) will start the season late. They bloody deserve it.

Someone acidentally breaks the game in the first 5 episodes.

A war starts within the first 25 episodes.

A Spawn area will be on an island.

Commission for @pikablob of the steam locomotive Featherfoot from her Underrail fantasy setting (which can be found here)

Finally, on the nearest occupied track, close enough that she could hear some component within chunking back and forth with quiet mechanical regularity, was an engine painted in brilliant scarlet. Its boiler seemed to be in the dominant Freehold-style, with a tall funnel, two great domes, and exposed pipework, backing into a large cab topped with a little clerestory bump; but its wheels and mechanics were mostly hidden by heavy frame-plates, save for exposed cranks between the three driving axles.

Featherfoot is sapient, with a "Coal Heart" in her firebox which acts as the mind and main power source for the loco (though she still consumes coal). She is a one-off 4-6-0 Constitution-type built by E. Towan & Co. Jushi Works, using a boiler built by Cortopassi Locomotive Works.

Featherfoot is based on a Illinois Central Railroad ten wheeler of the type that was involved in Casey Jones' infamous train collision, but below the frames it more resembles an outside-frame inside-cylinder Great Western Railway 4-4-0--a City or a Duke class. Its tender is based on a GNR tender similar to what the Stirling Single carried.

There are four holders for marker lamps or flags--three along the pilot beam and one on the smokebox, intended to be used with UK-style headcodes but with US-style marker lamps.

The livery is based on the fictionalized GWR Duke class seen in Assasin's Creed Syndicate.

While waiting for the client to get back to me on some questions, I doodled this:

Eaurp Guz! What are you doing on a miniaturized fantasy train!? Ah who am I kidding this is super in-character for her.

After a break and a little back and forth with the client (moved and replaced the whistle, replaced the oil headlamp with an electric one, added a dynamo), I completed the sketch.

I also tweaked some of the proportions a little. Note that when I am doing a "sketch" commission as opposed to "clean line art" i usually clean the sketch up a little more than I did here.

I then moved on to line art, which also gave me a chance to get the proportions on the wheels and frames right. I also totally re-thought the appliances and piping visible on the boiler.

By 10:31, the line art was complete. It had taken about an hour and thirty minutes, i don't have an exact timestamp.

Various other details were also added here--rivets, brake pipe, detailed coupler, detailed air compressor, snifters, wheel spokes, cut levers, the two builder's plates.

Here's the loco with full color. This is more or less how I left the loco off at the end of last night, at around 11:30 PM.

This morning at about 10:30 AM, I started working on rendering--and at 12:30 PM I finished the drawing.

I was shocked to find that with the line art removed, it didn't look half bad. It does look way messier, but I really need to go and try to tackle a fully lineless drawing in this style some time.

Sun Wukong Height:

Here’s my PERSONAL take on Monkey King Height for some universes. I was going to wait for the figures for BMW to be released but they take FOREVER. And we were talking about it in my server so here goes!

****GAME SPOILERS BELOW****

BMW is decently tall - 5.8-5.11 - genuinely appears about average human height in the game.

JTTW Shorter depending 3-4ft ish give or take (I think pretty short though)

Monkey King Reborn - Shortish 5-5.5 he is almost average person height I think here as Master is fairly tall (almost as tall as Wujing) & Comparing Wujing next to a village human then Wujing next to Wukong, Wukong give or take is the same height as a human. Also, Pigsy is just shy of Masters height and Wukong is almost the same height as Pigsy but a liiiittle but shorter. (This was annoying because both Wukong and Pigsy slouch almost the entire movie and there are a LOT of angles and visual trickery with background and foreground stuff. I even tried comparing to doors but it’s inconsistent.)

Nezha Reborn - Tall 5.8-5.11

I think PERSONALLY, he’d be tall in BMW specially. I know in JTTW he’s fairly small - they saw him more as a monkey at the time right? So somewhere between an actual monkey and probably short adult human 3-4ft something? Where as modern times we see him as “anthropomorphic” but human leaning. So it makes sense for us to scale him up and change some features. He is a “demon” after all as well. *Plus I’m bias on the idea that I want him at least human sized - idc if he’s a short king or a tall king necessarily.*

ANYWAY! *see under the cut*

In BMW we see at the beginning Wukong is shorter than Erlang (not as big of a difference during cut scenes though) during the first fight of the game, but in some clips I was watching recently (modded game lol) the Broken Shell of Wukong stands at the same height ish as Erlang. So while I was already fairly certain this was a “design” choice by the devs to make it easier to see the broken shell when you fight him, this confirms it for me too. Broken shell is MUCH taller than DO during the battle.

When in cut scenes during that fight they are the same height, build, etc:

Basically what I was getting at is this, it’s clear bosses are scaled up in the game to make them easier to see as well as make them more intimidating to the player (which I think is pretty universally understood). So in a way, it’s deceptive of actual height. Untrustworthy.

So, let’s factor this instead: Wukong is an anthropomorphic monkey. Let’s say he’s between 5’ and 5’11 give or take to give him some wiggle room.

Erlang, isn’t a regular “human” by any means so him being taller than average makes sense. The other demons? Same thing. Especially creatures that are actually bigger than a monkey - like a tiger. Some other creatures we see SHOULDNT be that big though. For example insect demons. Yet they are when they should be smaller than Wukong if you’re going by “scale up based on a specific average”.

So again, deception. Height doesn’t follow natural normal rules for everyone (magic). Yes sizes can change based on certain lore & magic things and Wukong can adjust his size as to be bigger or smaller.

I don’t think Wukong is super tall or anything by any means though, that’s why I said give or take in the “head canon” estimate earlier. He’s basically a compact power house - think like how ants can lift 10-50 times their body weight. He’s agile and lithe with muscles designed to be swift and quick, he’s a monkey so he’s all energetic. Hes not meant to be a body builder (like some *Tiger 👀*……YES he is strong as fuck - this isn’t about his abilities. *Also I’m not saying any of you dudes that aren’t 6ft aren’t ‘tall’ but I’m 5.5 and “tall” to me is 6ft and up.*

Anyway, I’m getting at that Destined One is a near carbon copy of Wukong and no matter how you SEE the ending of BMW be it DO just gains Wukongs memory or Wukong is made whole again and absorbs DO and takes his memories of his short life/journey for the artifacts - the two Monkeys are the same height.

So Monkey is fairly tall also based on in game things like surroundings etc. Hes not tiny. The game devs have deceived us throughout the game regarding height in several ways since it’s not consistent.

(Funny side note, if you add an inch or two to DO and feel they are separate beings - Wukong being offended by that would kill me with laughter and be hilarious - or if they are the same and Wukong realizes it after he “awakens”)

So basically, imagine him as tall as you want 🤣 I HC as mentioned above give or take for a specific AU I make. No joke depending on what AU I have I make him as tall or short as I need. So no one is wrong, okay?

Last note: this is before figures come out (yes there was the one but idk its actual metrics and while it can help to figure out size it won’t necessarily be an end game as everything surrounding bmw and height is genuinely inconsistent as hell.
