The middle portion of Love in paradise is great because not only is it catchy— the catchines catches you off guard to the very disturbing (in context) lyrics

It has the similar vibe to songs like the first few minutes of "Our love is God" from heathers or "You will still be mine" from waitress I think.. Love songs masking bad, potentially dark, intentions..

have you ever thought about how truly lonely calypso is? she's imortal and hot and powerful, but yeah mostly lonely. like i am currently reading the odyssey for the first time and you got to pity this woman. when hermes arrives she's like "oh you should visit more :)" and he goes "absolute not. I'd never travel this far without being forced by zeus, seriously you live so far away from literal anything, there aren't even any mortals to worship us, it's simply not worth it" and this was after being amazed by how beautiful her island is and then he immediately tells her that she is being forced by zeus to let go of the only other person there

it's sad, like it's wrong to keep odysseus there against his will, but you see how sad this is for her, right?

Some details I think are neat:

Odysseus sings "I'm not your man". This is a common motif in the musical, but every other time it's sung as "I'm just a man", this being like the ONLY exception

He starts hearing his comrades when Calypso says "stay in my open arms", which is a phrase Odysseus associates with his best friend, Polites. This also leads him to seeing the ghosts of the rest of his crew and of his mother

Later on, Odysseus is saying how guilty he feels over everything that's happened. He says "[I've] hurt more lived than I can count in my hands", and while he sings that, Calypso's motif plays.

And in the animatics

The Love in Paradise one has Calypso BLUSHING when Odysseus threatens her with the razor. She's down bad and I love her for it

The Not Sorry For Loving You one has the island itself restrain Calypso. The island restrains HER even more than it restrains Odysseus.

Also an observation is that she calls it paradise even if she's imprisoned in it, which feels to me like a way to cope with the fact that she's so extremely lonely and has always been that way.

So yeag these songs make me want to chew through solid steel I fuckin love Calypso so much and I REALLY get what she's going through. And ofc there's the Fern of it all. I actually really want to make an Odyssey AU for FGCC but I'd need an Argentunimbus fankid for that (<- Spark is Odysseus and Mist is Penelope)

JK Rowling is seen as a bad writer which I can get behind, but it's definitely not because of Merlin's birth date in her fictional universe not being the same fictional alleged birth date of this myth of a man.
